"Kurt smells like teen spirit" got spray painted on his bedroom wall by one of his girlfriends friends because his girlfriend wore teen spirit deodorant, however Kurt had no idea it was a brand of deodorant and thought it sounded cool, and it was years later someone pointed out to him that teen spirit was a deodorant.
I was a tweenie back when "grunge" hit. My first exposure to it was Alice In Chains back in ~1990. It was metal, but different. Superb. Goddamn beautiful, actually. Next I know, Nirvana's "Nevermind" album comes out in '91. Even more awesomery, as far as I'm concerned. This played all the time. Next I know, Badmotorfinger gets into the collective conscious. I still love you all, but there are few who still own my heart. My generation got very damn lucky. I expect the slow ones, in the biz, are sucking hind teet these days, as they should.

When you listen to a song like this for the first time, it's about the experience of the song, how it builds up and sucks you in, you become immersed in the melody and the words. It's an experience which should be savored. You ruined her first experience of this song by pausing at a pivotal moment right as the chorus is about to drop, just to say some stupid shit about Al Jankovic.
It isn't that special of a song. Iconic, yes, but it's not something to be "experienced" especially if you're not from the generation this song originated from.

For me, hearing Nirvana on the "Classic Rock" station is confusing, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, The Who, they are "Classic Rock" to me, but then I think, it's 28 years gone by since Smells Like Teen Spirit came out, and that sure enough makes it "classic rock"

I remember hearing the album and staying to hear it in its entirety at a record store (we had those then) ...I knew this was a brand new fresh sound that would change the direction of music from the moment I heard it. It's kinda sad how that was truly the last revolution in music.

its good you chose smells like teen spirit. its the most accessible song of theirs for a person who has never heard them. it grabs you and pulls you right in. no matter who you are.
Okay that explanation of where the term "teen spirit" sounds like you once heard the story and then forgot. "Kurt smells like teen spirit" got spray painted on his bedroom wall by one of his girlfriends friends because his girlfriend wore teen spirit deodorant, however Kurt had no idea it was a brand of deodorant and thought it sounded cool, and it was years later someone pointed out to him that teen spirit was a deodorant.

The botched on purpose performance he was on about was when Nirvana performed on Top of the Pops in the UK. Curt didn`t take to kind to being told the group would have to perform to a backing track rather than playing live.
Another great reaction video. When you asked her if she knew the Foo Fighters she looked at you as if you told her that we used to have to go to a record store and buy the actual album or 45 of the song we wanted, then bring it home and play it on a record player and hope it didn't skip.
