Omg this hit me so close to home because - as a Korean, I lived and studied in an International School in Thailand. School provided basic Thai for foreigners. Was also taught Traditional Chinese using Zhuyin Fuhao there. Then went to Singapore for secondary - college and then employment. Also, was invested into Japanese culture and Animation since a kid. Now I am back in Korea after serving my mandatory military service. Heck really had a blast watching this while reminiscing my past 30 years lol. Thanks for the wholesome content!

As Fitri said, All Singaporeans speak English and will learn 2 or 3 languages but she's probably not confident enough to also mention words from her ethnic language, Malay. If she knows, she'll say Promise is 'Janji', Cat is 'Kucing'(pronounced Ku-ching), Weapon is 'senjata', All is 'Semua', Aeroplane is 'Kapal Terbang' or 'Pesawat', and just pronounced Champagne and KFC (Ke-Ef-Si).

Two minor corrections at 3:20 . (1) The origin of the pronunciation of "cat" in chinese "mao" does in fact come from the sound of cats. (2) the pronunciation of "dog/gou" is not only not indicative of whether or not "cat/mao" is an onomatopoeia, but its literary counterpart is also likely an onomatopoeia for dog barks
In the Han Dynasty dictionary Shuowen Jiezi 说文解字 (~100 CE), the pronunciation of 猫 is recorded to be 莫交切, in other words, m + iao = miao. In addition, multiple reconstruction of old Chinese also point to similar conclusions - a pronunciation resembling the sound "meow" (a minor r sound possibly even indicating an attempt at recreating a cat's purr):
郑张尚芳:*mreew [mreːw]、*mrew [mrew]
Baxter-Sagart(白一平-沙加尔):*C.mˤraw、*C.m(r)aw
Starostin(斯塔罗斯金):*mhrāw [mʱraːw]、*mhraw [mʱraw]
It is only in modern northern mandarin that miao has been reduced to mao, but the other half of meow is still present in other Chinese variants and dialects, including but not limited to southwestern Mandarin, hokkien, cantonese etc. Many Chinese words for animals are actually onomatopoeias, such as 鸡(ji, chicken), 鸥(ou, gull), 鸦(ya, crow), 蜂 (feng, bees), 蚊(weng, mosquito), and this includes the literary term for dog 犬, originally pronounced as 苦泫切, "kwong/kwang" (the onomatopoeia for dog in modern mandarin is "wong/wang"). It's easy to find answers to Chinese etymology questions in Shuowen Jiezi and dialects

A new challenge for you if you're making this comparison again: Pick a Thai girl from the North or from North East, or pick a Laotian girl. Their dialect of Thai (or Laotian in general) is closer to some languages in South China. Modern official Thai has an incredible amount of loan words from Sanskrit through Cambodian influence and others. I'm sure if the Thai girl spoke the traditional dialect words for all of these, you'd probably find many more similarities. Even though the language families are different.
Actully in DNA research,Thai ppl were all lived in south China 8000 years ago
That's why Chinese and Thai ppl all using tones, because they were neighbors(and the Viets)
@TK斷群衆 Yes and if you compare the Zhuang language of the Guangxi and Lianshan regions it shares vocabulary with Laotian and Rural Thai dialects.

They're all adorable!
They needed to add Vietnam into this. Vietnam is a south east Asian language family with an estimated about 70% of its words influence from Chinese. Vietnam would sat on the left side but still had extreme similarities with all of the easy Asian countries.
That was the Confucious block, before the West came and broke it up.
So they add Myanmar and sit on the right because you have the same language as China 🇨🇳. It's best not to let Vietnam in, we are not like East Asia and Southeast Asia
This is correct and there was a study a while back that there is a language called middle Chinese which is ancient Chinese they believe that ancient Chinese is closer to Cantonese rather than Mandarin because it had either 7 or 8 tones as opposed to Mandarin which is simplified Chinese which has only 4 tones which is why we see in this video that Japanese and Korean words derive from Chinese and sound similar but "Chinese" sounds different. The study included all the similar words from all neighboring countries and the pronunciations and came up with that conclusion and Vietnam was one of the countries included
@@anhkimtruong241 Chinese might be Sino-Tibetan, but very few Chinese words are found to be of actual Sino-Tibetan origin (they just happen to be "basic"). Even if the classification is correct they would have separated 10000 years ago so not much similarity.
Well Thai is a tonal language same as burmese viet and lao (any other countries in SEA dont speak tonal languages) , the sanskrit words that we have only came later on, thai was originally much closer to chinese. Thai now consists of 40% SOUTH CHINESE languages such as zhuang ,which is a tai-kradai chinese language same as thai and lao. People only think its not that similar bcs chinese loanwords in thai mainly dont come from mandarin or cantonese and bcs of the non-chinese loanwords that thai also has. Coming from a thai/south chinese mixed family myself ,so. Vietnamese isnt the only country in SEA with a good % of chinese loanwords and it also isnt the only tonal language.
Although yes , vietnam overall has culturally more chinese influence than the other SEA countries , still especially the tonal speaking countries in SEA have , besides vietnam, more chinese influence than any other SEA country that doesnt speak tonal languages. Which is kind of obvious anyways ,as vietnam, burma ,thailand and laos are the closest to china (well direct neighbours and thailand is the closest of the non direct neighbours) + the tonal speaking of thailand is also bcs part of thailand (especially north part and central part) were originally ethnics from south china who brought all the chinese influence in thai food (some thai food is originally chinese food beside of the actual thai food that STILL also has partly chinese influence) and so on. Thais are not a ethnic pure volk, they are especially now a heavy mix of Thai, lao, chinese , burmese and partly vietnamese. Theres actually one tribe between north and northeast of thailand that is originally from Vietnam. Just a side info.
Im partly aware of the sanskrit loanwords too just bcs my husband is from india (and im thai and south chinese mixed)
,anyways, mainly thai is a south chinese + sanskrit language .
I do like to point out an error here. In Chinese, the world Mao did come from the sound cats make, at least have of it, the other half serves as something like a prefix indicating that it is a certain type of beast.

As i know in singapore there are malay, indian, and chinese people. Aren't they still using the language from which they came or all using singlish?
it is very sad when a country loses its identity because most of it is filled with immigrants
Melayu (malayan mongoloid) people as natives there are unable to compete with immigrants so they lose their language and are replaced by singlish as unifying language.

Skin color, height, etc. seems to be able to guess. Apparently, Northeast Asians like China, Japan, and Korea have white skin. As you go to Southeast Asia, your skin gets a little darker. You can also tell by height, skin condition, or something like that.

Champagne is a loan word from the French. I wish I could be as fluent in multiple languages as these women are.
The Singaporean girl is just speaking English 😂
She used almost all English words, for the items/words they chose to discussed for this video, yes. But most of the other girls also weren't that far off (in terms of using westernized words both in parts and in totality, such as the word "champagne" showed.
They didn't even use actual, authentic native words, even if they exist. These were young women in their late teens to mid 20s; they're not educated linguists or educators.
This is a pop culture RUclips video, with the people involved doing it for YouTubing purposes; it's not an academic discussion among educators who weare experts in Asian languages...
Thai and Lao speakers, for example, have opted for the word "fan"/"fen" (derived from the English word "friend" or, more accurately, a bastardized version of the word "friend," due to natives originally having a hard time pronouncing that English word "friend" correctly, when they started using it, as young people 3-4 generations ago, thinking of it as a "cooler" word than their own actual word), even though both cultures have an actual native word for that: "puen" ...
(Lao and Thai are about 85% to 95% interchangeable, with Esan Thai and Lao being close to 100% interchangeable, despite Thailand having annexed the Esan region for quite a few generations now... Both Esan and Lao shared MORE traditional dresses, traditional linguistics, and traditional instruments with each other than either one with Bangkok Thai people. THIS view, of course, isn't going to sit well with Thai folks in general; but that's just basic fact... since both modern Thai and modern Lao, way back, having derived their respective cultures & linguistics from the Dai/Tai-language family group, hailed from southern China a few thousand years ago)
crazy how that thai girl is more pale than everyone there even though thailand is south east which is known for darker skin tones. Just goes to show how toxic beauty standards are and how they influence people.
Thailand is the largest home of the Chinese outside China and Taiwan
Northern Thais near Chiangmai are fair skinned...they are different from people from Bangkok, they are called Lana Thai...used to be Lana Kingdom in northern Thailand.
Thai people really have black skin. Bangkok has only white people who see dark skin that people from the countryside or provinces.
Bangkokians are really white, but people with dark skin come from the countryside or other provinces.
Thailand is mix culture not everyone is have to be dark skin tone we can be anything we want this is nothing relate with toxic beauty standards at all 😞
I like the way that Japanese girl speaks..soothing
You could still construct a better analogue of the French word "champagne" in Japanese; perhaps シャンペイン? Actually that's analogue of the English pronunciation while the French is actually more like シャンパン. So the Japanese borrowed word follows French. There's no analogue of the "nge" sound in Japanese. I was told that the Chinese word for aeroplane "feiji" sounds like "flying chicken". 😅
Love it! Please keep going in this kind of videos. By the way, champagne Japanese sounds it's very similar in Spanish: champaña
