  • I talk about the very interesting life of Gayle McCormick, who grew up in the St. Louis suburbs and rose to fame as a member of the short-lived music group Smith. She sang lead on their biggest hit song, "Baby It's You" (penned by Burt Bacharach), which hit #5 on the Billboard charts. Gayle would also have a short-lived solo music career before distancing herself from the spotlight and moving back to St. Louis. Learn more about her story in this video!
She is buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in St. Ann, Missouri, next to her mother.

Gayle had a tremendous voice!! Smiths rendition of Baby it's You was FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥 with Gayle on lead and the accomplishment of the band members. Her solo It's a Crying Shame was great. Also a beautiful woman. RIP Gayle.

I was 15 in '69 and I was given a 45 of Baby it's You. I wore out the needle on my little RCA record player listening to that song and Gayle was a huge teenage crush of mine. Ahh those were the days. Thanks for this video.

Thank you, jason. I remember when "it's a crying shame came out." I was 11 years old and in the 6th grade. I'll never forget the memories attached to that song. It should have been much higher up on the charts. Definitely top 20. I still listen to it quite often. Update: I couldn't even find it listed in my Billboard top 40 hits book. But the internet says it was top 10 on the A/C charts!! Definitely deserved it.

I'm British and had never heard of Gayle until a couple of years ago. It is so typical that I discovered her a few years after she passed. I now shout her praises wherever I can. A voice that's got Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield and Tina Turner all in one package. With the Internet and youtube, at least some of her videos have now reappeared, just a shame she's not here to find so many compliments and new fans she now has. Thanks for the interesting video .

This is all hearsay but a local guy named Beatle Bob (R.I.P.) told me he once sent printed out copies of RUclips comments on her songs to Gayle and of course she was very surprised and happy. But yes I agree that I hope she knew her fanbase was growing again during her last years. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Thinks the trip down memory lane. I have not thought of Gail in years. But for some reason today she popped into my mind. Of course I Googled her and found out she died of cancer 7 years ago. I met her years after she was out of the music industry while working at Sears in Northwest Plaza, we were co-workers. I was thinking of looking her up since I moved back to St Louis recently. I was sad to hear of her death. And the death of her mother who she lived with during the time I worked with her.

Smith was a GREAT hard rock band of the late '60s and their two albums stand with anything that was done at the time, including The Beatles. Their lack of greater success beyond the "one hit wonder" of Baby, It's You is really puzzling.

Being a songwriter, musician and vocalist myself. Playing 3 different instruments and started playing at 11-and-a-half-years-old, I can't believe that I never heard the song "Baby It's You" or even ever heard of Ms. Gail before until several years ago. And that was because of the movie Death Proof. I originally watched it because Kurt Russell was in it. Then when he was in that bar, the song Baby It's You came on and I was like: "That's a good song! Who is that?" But I never tried to find out until quite a few years later and when I saw her on youtube for the first time, I fell in love with her like everybody else who saw her for the first time did. lol However, by the time I finally looked her up and saw the video for the song, she had already passed away about 3 years before. Great vocals and very beautiful. Would have loved to have gotten to meet her. R.I.P. Thanks for sharing this. Also, I like the music riff you're using at the beginning of your video. I don't who it is, but it sounds really good.

You should've interspersed the video with clips of her songs. I bought her solo LP on Dunhill & it had a lot of great stuff. It didn't matter that the label stopped in '75 because she only recorded for them in '71, then made an album with Decca in '72 & Fantasy in '74. Thank for the video. Sad to see her grave.

You're absolutely right - I wanted to include video clips of her songs especially the one she did with the Klassmen at Forest Park. Unfortunately I'm still using low budget editing software that keeps me from doing that 😕. Sounds like you were around during that time. Thanks for watching and for the corrections!

Del Shannon got them their record deal with Dunhill as he discovered her/them at the Ragdoll club in LA. Del produced the arrangement for Baby Its You in his living room. I have his gold record for Baby It’s You as the producer although he was robbed of the credit. Gayle and Del had an on and off again affair. When Dels first wife divorced Del she told me she always hoped Del and Gayle would hook up because she knew they both always loved each other. She tore up the songs she covered.
