I can't remember his name, but "Smiths" guitarist was living in Albany Oregon in 1990 something, our group was working one of the last venues for live music. One night he came in and after some discussion we invited him up, he brought his tele and amp in and played a couple of covers with us, then we invited him to sing, oh man what a soulful voice, the man could sing anything and own it. He had the voice the rest of us all wish for, well, me anyway. True story folks.
Personally I think the female vocalist singing here did the best version. Of course that only my opinion, but wow I get chills every time she sings this. She puts emotion behind this song unlike the Beatles version. Don't get me wrong I'm a big Beatles fan. I just think she did a better job with Smith. Thanks for posting this. Great memories.
Sad that she passed away....always loved this song by her from my childhood. I swear Ann Wilson of Heart must have watched her. I miss the 60's! Awesome music and talent.
In Gods name, how did she out shine the original? The Sherilles, that might be spelled wrong, but how, did she do it? I listened to all of the people who did this song. I have to say by far, this version of this song is the best. The very best. I am real glad I did that, or I never would have found tbis gem. This song that was mixed in with all the others, is a tribute to Gayle the singer of this song. She put EVERYTHING she had in this song. I mean EVERYTHING in this song. I am privileged to here it. It's Oct, 1969 and I can remember you couldn't go anywhere without overhearing this on someone's car or transistor radio. No one ever got tired of hearing it. They played this over the PA system at halftime during one of our football games in high school. Just great memories. I got a 45 in early 1970 and still have it. I was born in 1968.Heard loads of music of all genres since my 11-12 years of age as amazed by this new world for me.I only found them now, strange.I listened the song in a loop more than ten times.Class!
Considering all the amazing music that came out that year, if you could hang on to #5 for three weeks in 1969, you were something. I mean, you're competing against Abbey Road, of all things!
She is gorgeous, like stupefying Nordic Goddess type, and she has real soul that comes from deep down in her gut. I must have missed her in her day but so glad I caught this performance.
I liked to hear this group singing this song. The girl Singer has a way of singing that really touches me. I have liked this song for over forty years.
The Beatles were definitely good but this girl belted it out from the bottom of her soul. As for these bubblegum comments, next to the dark sophistication of the Doors, they truly were.
There have been so many versions of this song, but this by far, was the absolute, all time best, thanks to Gayle McCormick's incredible performance. Dave in Sierra Vista AZ.
The Shirelles, the Beatles, and then Smith. The last one did the best version of this song----Baby it's you. The Shirelles version sounded very romantic and sad, the Beatles version was also very romantic and emotional, but the Smith version (even though a psychedelic version of the song) was deeply emotional and very passionate, you can hear it in Gayle's voice, thus it makes it the best version of the three. The song was meant to be sung like this, with the passion of a restless lover, of a pleading soul.
A great version of this Burt Bacharach tune. A hit for the Shirelles in the early 60's and covered by the Beatles on their first album. Smith changed the song from a major key to a minor key, giving it a whole different feel, and replaced the Sha-la-la backing vocals with organ riffs. It's whole different song, though I'm sure Burt Bacharach was happy to collect additional royalties! Great band, great sound, great singer who just happened to be gorgeous too.. I checked out some of their other songs but they just weren't that good. I guess that's one reason we never heard from them again. But they left behind one great song.
It still amazes me everytime I watch videos of her, it was a couple years ago that my grandma told me she was part of our family and I always listen to her music ever since I’ve found out, I’m still regret never being able to meet her before her passing..
I have loved this version of Baby it's You for more years than I care to remember. It's still the best rendition of this classic. No one ever did it better or looked as good singing it either, LOL!!! The quintessential hot hip chick look of that era, captured forever. It's pretty groovy .

@wavygr Well my late Dad lived a hundred and my Grandpa lived a hundred too and they as well as my Mom and Grandma never had cancer. Regards.
Bill Brown Bill, after our 32 years asbestos cancer took my soulmate, Evil disease!
To the Gorgeous Gayle Annette McCormick with the fantastic talent. She is gone on 03/01/16 but still loved. Rest In Peace beautiful Gayle.
+Jesse Mendez This is my favorite as well
+Jesse Mendez i totally agree with you
+Jesse Mendez She passed away this week. RIP
+Jesse Mendez I agree, and also a Beatles fan
+Jesse Mendez Absolutely! Plain and Simple.
Love theHammond organ playing. What great cover.
Another hit written by the late Burt Bacharach
Sad that she passed away....always loved this song by her from my childhood. I swear Ann Wilson of Heart must have watched her. I miss the 60's! Awesome music and talent.
WOW!!! This lady blowed my hair back!! What an awesome voice and beautiful to boot.
Dave in Sierra Vista, AZ.
Great band, just so unbelievably good! The phrasing, the timing on this song, and Gayle's voice - Lord, she gives me chills and all kinds of other feelings!
They were awesome! Did you notice how they were introduced? A Group Called Smith. That was their actual name. If not, they would have only been introduced as Smith! No one seems to remember that. But it is true! I have a sealed copy of this album and on the front cover their name is written clearly as, A GROUP CALLED SMITH.
What power and soul. What a beautiful woman. Her solo album. Flesh and Blood is a killer, start to finish.
Loved this song growing up. Never knew who sang it until now.
Peaked at #5 on Nov 1, 1969 and stayed there for three weeks.
@@seanstipsky9473 Yes you got that right. It was one of those songs that people never got tired of.
This is the version I heard as a kid. The music we hear growing up dictates our musical oponion
She's class. All around. Great rhythm
I was 13 years old when this video came out...and puberty kicked in. Had the hots BIG time for this beautiful lady who was singing to me and me alone.
BEST rendition Ever! God Bless You Gayle. Tears for Ever.
Love late 60’s and 70’s music ❤️🎶
Great version of this song. She song it from the soul. Her voice though now silenced is fantastic.
Every time I play this, it's Goosebumps City. Can't believe this was their only hit.
She is gorgeous, like stupefying Nordic Goddess type, and she has real soul that comes from deep down in her gut. I must have missed her in her day but so glad I caught this performance.
I wish I could carry a tune. The gift of a beautiful voice and the hard work to achieve and share with others is a blessing.
I liked to hear this group singing this song. The girl Singer has a way of singing that really touches me. I have liked this song for over forty years.
Gayle is truly an ICON that represented the 60's culture !!
The Beatles were definitely good but this girl belted it out from the bottom of her soul. As for these bubblegum comments, next to the dark sophistication of the Doors, they truly were.
It's very interesting that you and others leave the Original version by the Shirelles out of your conversation
I LOVE that song!!!
Beautiful lady!!!
Beautiful voice!!!
RIP
legendary - "Don't leave me alone...CMON HOME" she found the soul at that chorus - stirring rendition....
brought back so much memories during VN war, my first time to hear this song it was in 1969
RIP Gayle. Superb performance. I wish there were more singers nowadays with your powerful beautiful vocal ability.
Great version...Tarantino movies always have the best music, along with Guardians of the galaxy.
There have been so many versions of this song, but this by far, was the absolute, all time best, thanks to Gayle McCormick's incredible performance. It's one thing to do it in a recording studio with unlimited takes at your disposal, but to be able to pull this song off live without missing an iota of the passion and emotion of the hit record is really special.
it's September 2019 anyone still Listening to this??
You can here me bellowing out this song TRYING to match her soprano voice at the end of the song.. lol
😎😂
SORRY to here of her passing.
Gayle McCormick , you where born the same year as my mother.
Miss you both.. ⚘
I applaud your music taste and yes someone is listening to Gale. Always will be too.
That was my wife's and my song back then. We had tickets to see them in Colorado Springs, but show was cancelled. I think because of car accident, can't remember for sure. Still have the "Smith" album.
@@markcraven8386 Yes. I finally found the right version of this song. Yes, I remember when I was a kid this song, and a woman belting out, "baby its you", and here it is. Gayle belted this song out, there is no question she did the best version of tbis song. I know. I listened to all of the people who recorded this song. This, by far is the best version. It was better than the original version. I think, she put every drop of energy and gave EVERYTHING she had into this song. This is the result. It is perfect. I am glad that i found it. Dave in Sierra Vista AZ.
@@davidewing5605 STILL get chills when I hear her sing this song.
What a freakin great voice!
Loved it then and live it now..❤🙏🙏
indeed, outstanding!!
She should have sung for Jefferson Airplane. We would have been asking: "Who's Grace Slick"?
Brilliant voice Gayle...You are truly missed...
Sorry but I disagree in my 0pinion the Sherells version is the best followed by the Beatled
Gorgeous rendition of a beautiful song.
I bought this album when I was a teen. I also bought their second album. Still have them to this day,
That's funny. I never even noticed The Beatles did it, but Smith knocked it out of the park-then and now.
Hi Jerusha
It still amazes me everytime I watch videos of her, it was a couple years ago that my grandma told me she was part of our family and I always listen to her music ever since I’ve found out, I’m still regret never being able to meet her before her passing..
her vocal is live and it's breathtaking !!!!!!
This gal gives me goosebumps man, and that beat is great too.
I have loved this version of Baby it's You for more years than I care to remember. It's still the best rendition of this classic. No one ever did it better or looked as good singing it either, LOL!!! The quintessential hot hip chick look of that era, captured forever. It's pretty groovy .
I can dig it, man!
HEY THE BEATLES VERION OF THIS SONG DOES NOT COME CLOSE... SHE NAIL IT TOTAL FEELINGS... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
