Historic Arrow Rock, Missouri
Arrow Rock is a small but very historical village in central Missouri, off the Missouri River. Its status as a booming pre-Civil War town, as well as its placement on the Santa Fe and Lewis and Clark Trails has made Arrow Rock historically significant. Much of its 19th century character remains. I take you to many notable buildings in that town.

Historic Kimmswick, Missouri
Просмотров 494 часа назад
Dating back to 1859, the village of Kimmswick attracts visitors every year with its shops, restaurants and festivals. Although it has a population of less than 150, it was still noted as one of Missouri's "top small towns" in recent years. I take you on a little walking tour of buildings that have been constructed and/or moved here. I do not go inside any of them except for the Blue Owl. Chapte...

Leaving Columbus eastbound, continuing on the Historic National Road (most of it present day U.S. 40) to small towns such as Etna, Kirkersville and Hebron. Each have a history of its own, as detailed by historical markers put up by the Ohio National Road Association. As a bonus I visit the National Road Station, which once served a railroad.

Short clips (with musical background) of buildings, signs, roadside attractions, etc are shown. Most of the towns are on present-day U.S. Highway 40 (paralleling Interstate 70), as with some other Historic National Road s...

Big Burr Oak Tree, near Columbia, Missouri

Also known as the Williamson Burr Oak Tree, the McBaine Tree and simply "The Big Tree", this is the oldest standing tree in the state of Missouri. Scientists and researchers have came to a consensus that it is 350-400 years old, as the exact year is unknown. The tree has survived drought, fire, several lightning strikes and flooding. It has also been unfortunately the subject of vandalism.

Look up the podcast "Our Fake History" that covers more of the known details behind Lee Shelton and William Lyons, as well as how the legend grew from the shooting and subsequent trial. BTW, my understanding about the graves is not they were originally unmarked, just that the markers were not maintained, and were eventually lost.

Supposedly one of my ancestors was living in that general area when French priests arrived. My ancestor was so happy to see them that he named the river "Riviere Des Peres." A self-published 'book' by Wm. F. Alden described that area's early settlement. The book is called "It Happened in Lemay" but it mentions Carondelet and how early settlers near Des Peres moved northward to Carondelet to escape flooding.

Thank you for this series on the National Road. I've always been a bit fascinated by the original old road, then it became 40, and once I-70 was completed, you could get From Terre Haute to Indianapolis in around 1 1/4 hours, depending on traffic and how fast you drove. It's not uncommon to make that trip in an hour, but that's keeping it between 70mph and 90mph (or so I hear *cough*). My dad's maternal side of his family came out the National Road in a covered wagon from Albemarle, Virginia around 1870, then on South from TH for about 30 miles over rough terrain, since there were no county roads back then. And how they managed to get by without A/C, indoor plumbing, I don't know -- a whole different world back in 1880 My great-great grandfather had bought 80 acres (at $10/acre) and he and his 7 sons came out the road and wanted to get there in very early spring so they could get their crop in and build a cabin. The following spring my great-great-grandmother and their 1 daughter had a ride down the Ohio River in a flatboat and came up the Wabash River, and settled in the 80 acres that is about half-way between Carlisle, IN and the village of New Lebanon. One of the 7 brothers wrote a diary of the trip from VA to IN, and if I'd love to read it. The only information about the trip is what I have just written. If I knew who has that diary, I'd love to read it. Again, thanks for this whole series of the old National Road through Indiana. Terre Haute was also the home of the Hulman Family who gained their wealth through Clabber Girl Backing Soda. And Tony Hulman married a girl from Evansville that was the heiress to the Fendrich Cigar company. Tony Hulman would later rise to national prominence as purchasing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1945 and saving it from the neglect and ruin following WW2.

They give some history of those people as if they themselves are letting you into their lives. Some are well know, others are not but they all have interesting lives. Since they started doing over 30 years ago vandalism has drop to almost non existence.
