  • On this episode we review another elastic watch strap option, this time from startup design house Nick Mankey Designs. The Hook Strap has a familiar formula but with a tweak or two that help set it apart, combine that with a high level of fit and finish and I can see why these have been popping up more and more on various social feeds. I'm digging the comfort paired the heavy/utility-like hardware. Let me know what you think in the comments below, thanks guys!

    Thank you for the incredible review! I feel honored to have one of my straps tethered to your venerable Contrail. A perfect matchup! Very happy to hear you're enjoying the Hook Strap :) Cheers!

    Picked one of these up on MassDrop a couple of months ago. Have it on a Seiko SRP777 Turtle. Once I sized it, i don't unhook it any more. Just slip it on and off. Then onto the pillow and into the watch box. Little skeptical at first but I have found it to be a very comfortable combination.

    I ordered a 22mm Army green after watching this video. The wearing comfort is unsurpassed! NATO's, Erika's, leather, etc., all take a back seat to this thing. Why? The two ends that fold over and stitch to the hardware are sandwiched between the folded layers. They aren't against one's skin. None of the metal parts contact your wrist either. The material is great in terms of appearance and balance between stability and stretch. I'll be buying more, without question.

    You've probably seen it mostly from me sorry lol. Love the Contrail on different combos! I have a bunch of Nick's products. All are hand made and all have it's place on my rotation. It's really not every one's cup of tea, but for some like me who craves for different, this fits the bill. I have his cap strap as well and love using it to open bottles at BBQs. I mean yes the buckle will get marred up by caps, but chicks dig scars lol.

    This is really cool. I think I'm going to take a chance on one. This is a better idea for me than the ones that are cut to your wrist size and the buckle looks like it might go okay with the Damasko metal.

    Nice. I like that the strap does not cover the case back.

    Different, but for someone who likes fairly frequent strap changes, it's probably not going to be that appealing. Not for me. I'd rather do wah steward for almost similar look amd wear with no layer between wrist and watch case and way less fussy.
    But, if you like to keep it simple with basically one strap all the time, then i can see this working out better for such a watch wearer.

      Khrono, There is no strap between your watch case and your wrist with this design. And, this strap comes with quick connect bars included. This will facilitate the quick removal of the strap without tools. If you have two piece straps with such bars incorporated in them, then you would be good to go with a variety of straps, fairly quick and toolless.

      @@ivermec-tin666 Nato straps are still faster no fidgeting with the Q.R. spring bars but both have their strengths & weaknesses.

    I have three of his straps. One of his leather stud secured straps and two of his elastic straps, one like the one you demo'd and the one with the heavy hook which can double as a bottle opener. If I can make one change I would undersize my next strap from him. I have/had a 8.25" wrist but have lost a few pounds since then and its getting loose and I can't seem to get it tighter. Probably something I'm doing wrong but will order another at 7.5" next time.

    What size wrist do you have? Did you order a smaller or larger strap to get the G-hook spaced and lined up evenly?

    This fixes my only slight complaint about erika's original strap with no buckle when writing or typing(though i fixed that by reorient buckle to inside of arm) This one looks real thick but for 24 bucks I won't complain.

    • @nickmankeydesigns
      @nickmankeydesigns 5 лет назад +3

      The custom elastic used for these straps is approximately 1.5mm thick, which in my experience is the thickest you can safely go in terms of watch lug clearance, without compromising on strength or comfort. The layers really disappear once on the wrist though, and make for a comfortable desk diving experience no matter how you have it oriented on the wrist!

    Zinc Plated Hardware, Really for $24 not so much.

    • @nickmankeydesigns
      @nickmankeydesigns 5 лет назад +8

      Just thought I'd take a moment to address your concern here. A special zinc alloy was the selected metal for the hook hardware due to its strength to weight ratio, as well as Rockwell hardness so as to not scratch any of our beloved stainless steel timepieces. These straps are also completely hand made to order right here in the USA, so in terms of labor costs, we believe the price is entirely fair.

  • @bernardtan1
    @bernardtan1 4 года назад

    That strap won't work for me as I change straps daily & sometimes even more than 2x a day... That strap being soft means it's elastic band won't last as long as you would like it to, it's going to cost you in the long run. People with big wrist I noticed don't like straps running under the watch case because a NATO strap even exaggerates their wrist size, that explains why they like elastic bands.
