Highground in shooter games is very important to control or at least be aware of the power of in FPS games and Overwatch is no different. In this video, FREEDO breaks down footage from Dreamhack Winter of teams utilizing or failing to utilize the highground and its effects. Let us know what you think and be sure to drop a Like & Subscribe if you enjoyed!
Please do more like this. Love the analytic perspective of the game. It helps me learn and also teach others much easier. I try to pass on your knowledge every time possible ^^
Ok, so I get that high-ground is more effective for attackers to take in order to win the teamfight and make progress on the payload. But how about for the defence? Misfits, in your second example really epitomises how most of my matches plays out - in that the attackers get to free-roll on payload maps, and the defences sits with their highground, not getting picks and not contesting the payload. Can defensive highground advantage be an effective strategy in and of itself or does it all come down to getting picks - something that can be difficult at times for solo-q dps. Could you use first stage Dorado as an example? Thanks.
Wow. Seeing the pro level play is just amazing... the coordination, the communication that must be happening, even the mechanical skill shown, especially in the 76 aim (that's what I noticed most at least) is just insane. They work together like they're units controlled by one player in an RTS game, not like individual members of a team in an FPS game.
Yeah, that's definitely true. I'd love to learn to play like that, but the reality is that it does take a large investment of time to do so, and I understand why most people don't even try. Still, it's why I watch videos like this; even though I don't have tons of time to get as good as they are, I can still improve my gameplay with practice and by understanding the game better.
"As long as you secure the team fight, you're going to get the objective. That's a major principle in Overwatch that I think a lot of players need to learn desperately. Overwatch is not the type of game where incremental progress on the objective matters, quite the opposite is the case. You HAVE to win team fights, you HAVE to kill the enemy, you HAVE to stay alive yourself. You can't just throw your body on the objective and eventually win" The truest shit I've ever heard
While I generally agree that high ground is important I think sometimes this 'pro strat' will just backfire on you if your team is not up to snuff. Especially on defence, if your entire team is on the high ground and not getting those kills they need all that means is the other team is getting free time in the objective. Once it hits that three quarters mark people just become too desperate to stay off the objective and the whole teamwork thing blows out of the water. This is especially true if you don't have a Rhys shield to keep ur subpar DPS alive long enough for them to get in gear and actually kill people from the high ground. On good, full teams I see this working all the time but in solo Q comp at a thing below diamond I'd have my reservations.
But one thing remains true in that you must at least contest the high ground. You don't need to secure it, but letting your opponent use it unhindered is suicide
Jian Ling Lim agreed, even if only one person stays on high ground it can mess up your day. For example, if you look at my game clip "Overwatch: A good team makes a great soldier" I stayed on high ground pretty much the entire match and they didn't really make an effort to get me down so I cleaned house mostly unopposed. Trouble came when I hit the ground for one reason or another.
Yeah I agree with you. 90% of times the dps especially around gold or silver is incompetent and can't kill. these strats work better at around Plat and diamond where people can actually shoot and aim. I'm a diamond player who climbed from bronze and I gotta say, these things really won't work at gold and silver. at those ranks, you are better off playing carry hero's and getting picks by yourself. I don't even wanna talk about bronze because those guys don't even know the basics.
I actuality had a toxic teammate yell at me on koth because we let them cap while we cleaned them up after winning a teammate. we ended up capping the point back and they only got 14%. I told him the team fight was more important and he said "um no the objective is literally always the most important thing"
Win fight = HOLDING the Objective/map, which is the point of the game entirely. Re-taking is hard, so there's no point to purposely throw the fight just to lose map control in exchange for a _little_ bit of point %. This is why these types of videos are important, that opinion in ignorant to how OW works and it comes from other games, like CoD where you can win by throwing your body on the obj and being fodder (somewhat/sometimes). -F
Your Overwatch yeah. we ended up losing the match largely in my opinion due to his toxicity. I was 4 stacking and he was solo. he was angry from the start because "he was a diamond in season 2 playing with people who didn't even place last season"
Sadly, you will have to cooperate with toxic players to win games. If they refuse to do the 'right thing' with you, you should do the 'wrong thing' with _them_ as it's better to coordinate on an idea rather than do two different plays. -F
Absolutely fantastic breakdown Freedo! I really love how not only do you use real examples of how these simple concepts can affect games of the highest level, but you also offer suggestions on how they could be counterplayed if you were to find them in your own matches. AA+ Content
Excellent collection of lessons learned. Love how you take actual pro footage, analyze it, and distill down the important lessons to the improving player. Definitely going to try to incorporate this into my next playthrough of Dorado or Volskya
This channel is and was basically a school for when i just started the game, and now i'm at the advanced honors classes with these videos. Thanks for helping me and others and keep up the great content!
I would love for you to make more of these videos. I can't watch every match played by a pro team, but I can watch every tip video you make. You're doing the lords work gentlemen :)
Thank you for making these videos. Ive been showing them religiously to my friends and so far its helped us all gain around 800 points this season. Ive never enjoyed this game more.
This was great. A concise review of a particular component of the game with overhead camera angles to be able to get a better overview of where the good position are. Sometimes can't even see with how twitchy the players are, at least without getting seasick, and it can be tough to tell how the positioning was working out to get the most of things. I will jump on the bandwagon for MOAR! of this. Thanks as always guys.
Awesome video. It's really cool to see strategies that the pro's use broken down, because they aren't all that impossible for us normies to do, it's just a matter of timing and coordination. These videos help identify exactly how they do that, and I think that's valuable. Thanks again for quality content, Your Overwatch!
THIS video! This is what I call true content to see and learn. This is what I want in youtube videos of overwatch aside of the news. Thank you so much, I already new that the high ground is a important thing in any game, but this, explained and analysed in pro plays is beautiful
you're doing a great job breaking down the pro matches freedo! i love the videos! i never really think about those strats but they help me a lot. Now you are almost at the point where you become the WarOwl of Overwatch
I love watching these analyses. A big point that you touched on was the idea of sending the attacking team in front of the payload in order to gain good ground and force the fight to happen in front of the cart. This way you get free movement and your team is prepared for the enemy, instead of the enemy ambushing you around the next choke
Hey guys, I just wanted to put my two cents in and say that these pro breakdowns have helped me see this game in a new light. While the other videos you guys make are really insightful, these breakdowns put everything you guys talk about into context. if you're on the fence as to whether you should keep making them: definitely keep it up. Thanks guys!
this was great. more like this would be appreciated. i like how i can use owcentral for casual and news stuffs while i can watch you guys for the competitive side of the game.
really helpful! I knew a lot of the things you said, but there were also really helpful new things! Keep doing these, they are the best videos on this channel in my opinion
definitely my favorite videos to watch too, this has been something giving me a lot of trouble where my team will take high ground but then not know what to do with it
Love all your videos and love your commentary on pro games too. Please keep making pro-game dissections, but don't stop your regular stuff! Thanks for all the great videos.
That 4:30 mark where they had the free cart is SOOOO important. The Lucio staying on cart, with the rest of the team going high ground is genius. I really like that Strat
This is a step in the right direction. I'm someone who's played FPS games for a very long time but I'm always searching for new ways to improve and broaden my knowledge. It's good that you're not stating common and obvious facts catering to more common casual players anymore.
Seriously, do more of these, I've tried watching pro games and learning myself, and I do some each time, but this teaches me so much more in so SO much less time, giving me more time to play or, sadly, work.
These help so much! They're wonderful, and they've helped me improve as a shot caller a lot. I wish I could hear what the pros are saying and how they're communicating, but I'd have to dedicate a lot more time than I have to professional gameplay and tournament following, so these are fantastic to help just a little bit. :)
I love these things, these vids teach me mor about the game than (and no offense to any other YourOverwatch videos) just about all theother vidscombined, I'm trying to learn tracer and mercy in an effort to increase my hero pool nd game fleibility (I am presently a Rein main and Rein doesn't work that well on KOTH), and the last video has helped me go from constant death as tracer, to almost invulnerability, in quick play, where I practice. The positioning tips are AWESOME! I would love if this becomes a regular series (If it isn't already).
Good video. As someone who primarily plays QP and Arcade, I would like to see you guys look that the different brawls and tactics for them as well as the 1v1 and 3v3 modes. Very neglected.
One on dive comp usage would be nice; and these are REALLY helpful, so I'd appreciate you continuing to make them. (If you've already done that, sorry about my lack of research)
I love that video and I would like to see more example on how to use the high ground because I understand in some ways that it is important but I feel when I'm in ranked that when using it, it s more a handicap than it s helpful. So surely I'm bit using it properly and more video on this would more likely help! Thanks for your good work your overwatch team !
What should Misfits have done at 3:43? Was it the right thing to try and graviton and stop Fnatic from pushing the cart, or should they have baited out key enemies such as Dva to increase the chances of winning the fight? Would using a tactical visor or earthshatter have been a better move?
To effectively utilize high ground advantage, it is important to note that your team comp must be good at poking at range the enemy team, an area where McCree and Soldier 76 shines the most. It also involves Reinhardt barrier wars so a team comp must have sufficient DPS output to have the advantage here. A triple tank team comp kinda sucks in holding the high ground though.
Every time I suggest a team to hold positions and high ground they ignore me, is a basic principle of a fight and they still can't get it, Junkrat, Zarya, Hanzo, a lot of characters can use it and yet people think there is only one way to take a point.
Tell me about it! Most the playerbase doesn't even understand that you have to stand BEHIND a Reinhardt shield in order to get protection. It's madness.
Speaking of which, time and time again I tell Rein and the team to use the payload as cover, there is no reason to be up front with your barrier at all times when you have a mobile cover with infinite hit points with you, I play Rein that way too, once it is contested then is time to get on the front and clear the area.
VanFanel1980mx I've said this hundreds of times to the team, yet people want to defend in front of it, then complain when the rein shield gets shredded. It's just absolute madness.
Man great video , you re awesome (nothing new to me since i been following for long) your analisys and emphasis on certain point is just perfect to undertanding a little bit whats going on trough pro players mind, i love what you do keep up!!
My experience with high ground is for example on Watchpoint Gibraltar when defending, where the team sits on top of the thingy and the enemy team pushes without problem all the way through the tunnel because noone is contesting. Same happens on Dorado.
I appreciate the video and enjoyed the talk about engagements and positioning. Have you considered making a video about Taimou's Roadhog play from the Apex tournament, considering how amazing it was throughout the tournament? Roadhog seems to be a key figure in the current meta and doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. What other videos are you considering making?

honestly these are the best videos YO is making, it teaches a lot of things in the same vid instead of only one
That 4:30 mark where they had the free cart is SOOOO important. The Lucio staying on cart, with the rest of the team going high ground is genius. I really like that Strat

please keep making these videos. I learn alot from these and use them to teach my friends.
I love these videos. They have the commentary that I wish the livestream casters could provide.
Love the pro breakdowns, keep it up

Pro breakdowns really cool, interesting and fun to watch -keep it up :)

Please can you make one with Miro on winston or mickie on Dva
Tobias Doye yes. Need more harambe pro play!
another great one, Freedo.
those breakdowns are really interesting.
Can you do one on Pro dive comps and proper initiation?
i wish the people i solo queue with in competitive watched your videos, its very frustrating to play with people who don't know how to properly play
Also you should do more pro game break downs!!

Junkrats I encounter lately think themselves some sort of long range artillery that isn't actually hitting anyone.
These are really fun and helpful videos. Keep 'em up!
great video! need more i have been looking for a breakdown on pro meta like this

These are the best among awesome videos! Keep it up guys! :D
Great video!Showed the highground perfectly (sitting at Grandmaster and see a lot of people not knowing how to use it)
My experience with high ground is for example on Watchpoint Gibraltar when defending, where the team sits on top of the thingy and the enemy team pushes without problem all the way through the tunnel because noone is contesting. Same happens on Dorado.
This is an amazing video type from you guys. Keep up the good work :)
4:48 Except King of the Hill. Tickle for percentage! A lot of people forget this while learning not to tickle in payload Maps
These pro analysis vids are good, keep it up
This pro breakdowns are my favorite videos, keep em up :)
