Besides the great song analysis, what I love about this video is seeing that even big professional guitarists/musicians don't know all their songs perfectly of the top of their head. Normally when you listen to a band you only hear the one time they recorded the track, or you see them play a well rehearsed set-list on tour. So it looks like they can effortlessly play any song front to back. It's reassuring to actually see that I'm not a shitty guitarist for having to occasionally "relearn" songs that I previously knew.

It's all about having an ear for it. I'm not nearly as good as they are but I know that my songwriting has evolved a lot and I tend to hear in my head what I want. And my writing has improved so much because I now know better what I want before writing it.
Thanks so much Rick, this has been one of my favorite songs by them since its release. You should do Tesseract - Of Matter. Also hope you were talking about The Way The News Goes when talking about Mark. Great tune
Rick is the stunning example for that you never really grow old as an open minded musician...lifetime lasting learning, fun and gaining depth...thanks so much for his contribution to us all out there - message received.
This has to be my favorite "what makes this song great" entry so far! The depth in which you investigated this masterpiece is amazing in my opinion. I'd love to see more videos in the future where you "interview" the artists - if possible, haha. As a musician myself it's humbling and inspiring at the same time to see someone like Misha have to remember parts of his own work. It proves no matter how talented or top-tier bands are they are still made up of human beings. It makes lofty musical goals still seem possible for the rest of us. The entire "Periphery: III" album is an absolute masterpiece. I'm looking forward to your next dive into Mark's work VERY much. Their music is something that you cannot help but get sucked into in an unhealthy way, haha. Every time you listen you notice something new! As a side note, one of my favorite parts is watching you musically nerd out from 24:14 - 25:00, it shows how much music is deep rooted in your soul. Keep up the good work, Rick!
I've slept on Periphery too long and I guess I'm discovering their music at the right time in my life...what Adam does on bass really inspires me to make killer basslines. I had to pause the video for 3 hours just to practice. I guess that's what good music does, it inspires others to make music.
To answer your question from a previous topic, has every song been written...wow, considering the complexity and uniqueness of this song, I'll guess an emphatic no. Thanks for breaking down this very intense song, I'm 58 and I'm confident musicians and the music they create will continue to inspire and amaze me until my final breathe...just wow. I'll toss in a break down request for three of my biggest guitar influences (any song would be fine), Ronnie Montrose, Pat Travers, and Frank Marino. Keep up the great work Rick!
11:23 this is where I really think the decision to sell the individual tracks of these songs was a BRILLIANT idea. Wanna hear the song as the band intended? Unmute all the tracks in your daw. Wanna hear the song as a lush, beautiful guitar and vocals song? Mute the drums, bass, and rhythm guitars. Wanna hear a heavy groove with badass fuckin distorted bass and double kick drum? Do the opposite. It's like 3 songs in one and buying the producer pack kinda made it feel like a video game with unlockable content. Very unique experience and I hope they continue to do it :)
Could you break down a Stevie Ray Vaughan song? Any one you like... I'm 59 yrs.old. When I was in 1st grade my school offered music lessons. My mom said we couldn't afford it, so that was that. I don't know half of what you're talking about but when you explain things while playing the song, I get it... I get exactly what you mean, and it gives me a greater understanding of the music I love. Thank you!! Better Late Than Never.0
This is really inspiring! You’re right, better late than never! The hardest part about learning music theory is finding the motivation to do so, which it sounds like you have! I know people have a hard time with it but I personally never struggled with it because I wanted to learn about it from day one. Also most things in theory are laid out very logically, almost like a language, where you can figure out what something is called by thinking about it’s name. You can do it!
@@skellydelo1 Wow, I'm overwhelmed! Thank you all so very much. You're right, Skelly, music is my first love and I regret the missed opportunity to learn all about it. Mr. Beato's site is the first one I've found that REALLY helps me understand the music I love- I may be old, but my spirit is still 19!!!
Michele Parker honestly that’s all that matters! That and the desire to learn. I really like Rick Beato’s channel because he has a mastery over the concepts that I learned in college when I was studying music and explains them in such an understandable way. He and Adam Neeley are really good at that, although Adam neeley’s stuff is the half of theory that’s very interesting (I think) but not necessarily useful to a beginner or a casual songwriter. He’s pushing the boundaries of theory. 12 tone is really good too, he breaks down popular music and explains all of it with little elephant drawings. Anyway, my point is there’s never been a better time to start learning than right now! I’m sure you can do it :)
I'm all about Periphery's super heavy stuff but, I gotta admit, Absalomb, Catch Fire, and Lune are my favorite songs on this album. They really hit me right in the feels and I feel like they really show the band's versatility

Most often I watch these videos to see songs from bands that I’m already into... but this is one of those more rare occasions when I watch the video because I’ve heard of the band but don’t really know about them... then proceed to like the band.
When you start playing the vocals together with guitars is where I wet my pants. It's so damn beautiful! These guys are geniuses! I mean you don't usually hear there are some chords, not just C when Spencer starts to sing but all under that heavy bass part is a beautiful melody. I suddenly felt teary when I heard that for the first time.
Overall harmonies sound so good. Beautiful chords, tight as heck rhythm section, amazing sounding guitar tones, heavy bass. I'm really digging this band! Awesome song and musicians.

It's all about having an ear for it. I'm not nearly as good as they are but I know that my songwriting has evolved a lot and I tend to hear in my head what I want. And my writing has improved so much because I now know better what I want before writing it.
Was that the one at Sam Ash? That was a great clinic
P3: Select Difficulty is probably my favorite album of all time and I love the behind the scenes videos showing their process making amazing music
Thanks so much Rick, this has been one of my favorite songs by them since its release.
You should do Tesseract - Of Matter.
Also hope you were talking about The Way The News Goes when talking about Mark. Great tune
Tesseract are amazing
Dude, please get more votes for Tesseract. Of Matter: Proxy
Survival or something off Sonder would be better.
Too many to choose from. One of their more complex and syncopated songs might be Dystopia.
YES! Of matter!
Man this is brilliant. The progressive metal scene has given me such massive, emotional songs, and Periphery is a huge part of that.
Rick Beato good sir. You are the greatest gift from God on youtube.
We can actually buy the individual tracks ?
Arthur Laniez yeah! Or at least it used to be an item on their store, it’s called the P3 Producer Pack. Not sure if it’s available anymore
@@bubblytar Amazing, I wonder if other bands do that (and I wonder how Rock get all those tracks haha)
Arthur Laniez haha, I don’t know of any other bands that do. My band tried to but it ended up not working out. I want every band to do it lol
@@bubblytar that would be so amazing to have access to this ressources :D
Could you break down a Stevie Ray Vaughan song? Any one you like...
I'm 59 yrs.old. When I was in 1st grade my school offered music lessons. My mom said we couldn't afford it, so that was that. I don't know half of what you're talking about but when you explain things while playing the song, I get it... I get exactly what you mean, and it gives me a greater understanding of the music I love. Thank you!! Better Late Than Never.0
It's never too late to start. Honestly.
Keep learning, be glad today we have these amazing people on yt sharing their knowledge. It's really a thrill. :)
Add Satellites to that list now too I think lol
I'm now a new fan of Periphery. They remind me of Tool and 30 Seconds to Mars. Two groups I never thought about together. I'm going to check them out a lot more !
Rover Dover it’s funny you say that because Maynard did guest vocals on the first TSTM’s album
Juggernaut: Alpha & Omega is IMHO their magnum opus. "The Wall" of prog metalcore.
You might like Erra then too.
Darrkness Erra’s Augment album is extremely similar
@@ErebosGR YES! They both hold their place on my top 3 favorite albums of all time along with Periphery II on top. Love this band and I'm hyped up for their new stuff coming soon
The end of this song will always be one of my favorite outros that Periphery has ever done. It's so heavy but soooo melodic. Great video, Rick!! Just started watching your channel when I saw the tool episode, and was so happy to see you had done Periphery as well, one of my all time favorites.
I really like to see how Rick asks always for the parts that Musicians struggle with... He makes everyone human!
periphery is just one of those bands that you can look at literally any song of theirs and find new things every time you listen. they’re such talented dudes and they’re definitely going to leave a mark on music history.
I have had the privelege of being Matt's student on drums and he is the best drummer I have come across. Periphery are the band that took me into the other realms of music. This is a great video.
my friend is a huge periphery fan, this was the song he showed me and ive been hooked ever since. youre my favorite chris 🖤
This dude just played Periphery on a 50's LP P90's goldtop. You, sir, are a damn legend.
22:10 creating unresolved uncertainty is so powerful in that pre-chorus
Could you please do Gojira? Any song, really.
And Meshuggah!!!!!!!!
Opeth
Heaviest matter in the universe.
I'd really love to see Rick break down "It's Only Smiles". I love the layering on that song, and I think there's a lot to look at there.
Most often I watch these videos to see songs from bands that I’m already into... but this is one of those more rare occasions when I watch the video because I’ve heard of the band but don’t really know about them... then proceed to like the band.
This is also a testament to Nolly's amazing recording and mixing techniques, he's a studio genius.
I can't imagine how incredible music must sound to this guy. I'm sure he can find something to appreciate in any song!
Love these videos of yours and so cool that you focus on djent at times as well!
Torille
I wish Beato makes a video on some Profane Omen song but i guess it wont happen.. at least in a long time if ever.
Overall harmonies sound so good. Beautiful chords, tight as heck rhythm section, amazing sounding guitar tones, heavy bass. I'm really digging this band! Awesome song and musicians.
They are my favorite band for a reason. They don’t have a song that’s anything short of phenomenal
Awesome of Misha to help here and give a little bit of insight. Awesome! Great episode
"it's changes like that.... that makes this song great"
goodness gracious, Sir.... i keep playing this video over and over 🙏❤ thank you for being you and existing with us
It is very nice to have Misha through this video... really nice to have his input
I don’t know how I’ve never seen this video but it gave me so many chills. I absolutely love this song and remembering when I first heard it live. Brings me back to good times.
You sir are just a true American badass! I love that you embrace ALL music. Your knowledge and understanding is second to none. Watching you dissect this with precision is really quite awesome. And it’s just a small cross-section of your ability. Ok, I’m done blowing you. Nice vid🤘🏻
Nothing to say,,,I´m as astonished as the greatness and simplicity of the arrangements...as I was the first time I listened to the band...Love U Periphery have changed the way of music, though lots of people seem not to notice....!
Definitely join The Beato Club! The additional tabs for the videos are amazing! Thank you Rick!!
13:37 "the solar system has nine planets"
Being a music transcriber has to be one of the coolest jobs ever.
It is such a good sensation to see that all of your "What makes this song great" videos were written by my fav bands. That makes me feel like after all, I have good taste in music, despite what most of people I know think.
Thank you Rick. You are awakening the passion for music in me.
Awesome! Time for Tesseract now? :)
Agreed... Anything off Polaris
Better Haken
Intervals plz.
Nocturne or Retrospect, please!!
I agree with Diego. Nocturne and Retrospect for the win! Really anything off altered state.
Man your positivity on this song made me give it a proper listen and now it's on constant repeat, really love what you do Rick
Not a Periphery fan, but seeing Misha explain it, being chill and totally not afraid to share and play some bum notes in the progress - inspiring!
I've watched this video so many times, and every time I just think about how great Periphery is at composing music!
Something from The Contortionist would be really neat!
Amazing video
Don't think Rick likes any extreme metal, all the songs he's covered by more extreme bands were softer songs. Closest thing he's come to covering extreme metal is Chop Suey
Jacob Sarvathayaparan Monochrome (Pensive) is all I’ll say :)
@@jacobsarvathayaparan2337 lol Language isn't even all that extreme. Part 2 is as heavy as that album gets
"Extreme Metal"??? The Contortionist? How many tracks if their's have you listened to? Not trying to attack you, bud, just curious. They have a tremendous amount of, "softer" music in their catalog.
You are just having too much fun Rick! Your love of rock is contagious!
Im excited for the second Periphery one as well. Going back through all of your other videos...great stuff!
Love how you can transition from style to style and genre to genre.. dont know if I'll ever get bored of watching your vids!
Wow this song is great I should start listening to these guys again
Nice when a high calibre musician like Rick is open to different styles of music and takes time to share his knowledge.
Rick, this is next-level stuff. GREAT episode. Porcupine Tree soon?? Maybe The Mars Volta? Or maybe some Ultravox for something really different?
The Mars Volta would be awesome.
One of the best Periphery songs. Man everything in this songs gives me goosebumps. I can't explain. I hope they come back to Brazil soon so I can go to their concert FINALLY
I think maybe its time for Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd or The Pineapple Thief! :) I love those bands
I want a full week-long stream about PT called "What makes this band great?"
Anesthetize and we're in for a ride
@@gomaaren if this guy do one of Anesthetize I will stop everything i'm doing, bring the snacks and enjoy peacefully the breakdown of a masterpiece lol
Anesthetize, please please please!
^Went off in a weird direction, but yeah since ptree/Pthief would be amazing
When you break it down like that, it really makes you appreciate the song that much more. awesome analysis.
10:29 OMG that sounds incredible
Ricks videos breaking down Periphery's songs and their intricacies only make me enjoy this band even more. It's like I am hearing their songs with fresh ears all over again
Hell yeah Rick!!!! Everyone should listen to Periphery!
Everything in this video is amazing. I love Periphery so much. 2 Years later and I keep coming back
the four axemen in Periphery are so tight I can't even believe it!! Cool band... One of the few djent bands I still enjoy listening to.
Probably the coolest video on RUclips! The appreciation you show when you hear parts you enjoy and having misha in to show parts and explain is such an awesome idea excellent work !!!
Absolomb is one of my favourite songs off p3
Absolomb and Flatline are my favorites
I'm so glad he chose this song, because this has been one of my favorite Periphery songs of all time since waaayyy back when it was still just a 'Bulb' demo
For anyone wondering if Spencer can pull off these vocals live - I've seen him go an octave HIGHER on some songs. Live. Blew my mind
He’s a phenomenal singer with great range and technique but I don’t think you know what an octave is if you think he can sing an octave higher than the highest notes on here lol.
It’s really encouraging and inspiring that someone who writes such complex guitar parts as Misha still messes up on his own riffs and licks sometimes. It makes me feel less self conscious when I mess up
If you haven't, check out mishas masterclass video where he writes a song from scratch, he states that there's going to be wrong notes, mistakes, retakes and such, it's awesome because A it reminds you he's still human, and B you get to see his thought process, highly recommend it
Hope we get to see Mark in that next Periphery video you mentioned! The Way the News Goes has one of Mark's best riffs of all time.
I must admit, i never heard periphery before, but after this, i instantly googled their upcoming tour dates. What an effort!! Nice video Rick. Good to see new music on your channel. Love it!
These guys really are oozing with talent
I’ve always wanted videos like this about periphery! When I (as a guitar player) go in and try to learn their songs by dissecting them is hard to avoid the realization that this guys think in EVERY little part of their melodies, thank you for this, killer video! Cheers from Chile
Best thing on the internet! I have friends that are not into Periphery and say they are nothing special. Time to show them this.
I've started listening to these guys pretty recently (it might have been because I started watching this video) and they're absolutely amazing.
Now that this video was recommended again, I'll actually watch all of it (after listening to the song the whole way through).
Oh and yes more periphery but also check out tesseract
Masterpiece of a song.
YES!
