OMG!! so sorry, I said "Golly" Getgood and of course, with all respect, meant Nolly Getgood! I'm slipping in da brain gang.....ugg..... Hope you like the vid :) AWWWRIGHT!!
Misha has a vid on youtube thats like an hour long of him screen sharing the entire recording process of reptile. Check it out man, it was so incredibly informative and amazing how he handles song writing and orchestration.
I know, it's so stupid when people when people say that about Reptile, which is Periphery's best song in my opinion. To be fair the people who say that, aren't that mich of Periphery fans. Aside from that point still stands.
This is a really great, but unexpected song choice. Definitely more “underrated” but in my opinion is pretty much a quintessential Periphery song. It’s really got everything you could want from them. Keep up the great work, Geebz! Still hoping for more Coheed in the future so you can experience more of their diverse catalog!
The absolomb demo version from like 2008 or 09 was my first taste of periphery and it got me hooked. I think the video is still up on RUclips, it has a green aurora as the visual part of the video. When this finished version was put on P3 I was instantly in love. Easily my favorite track on the album.
This is one of my favorites off of P3. It's got a lot of early-Periphery energy to it, and my god the orchestral sections in the middle and end are so, so friggin good. It's one of those forever-chills song.
If I'm not mistaken, there was a track that Bulb(Misha solo project before periphery if you didn't know, it's like 50/50 with people so I get it) called Absolomb. And I think this song was built off the bones of that later on, and basically brought back and modified for the progression of Misha, and it being a full band. So that might be where the early Periphery vibes come from, possibly. Regardless I definitely agree with you, and it's a favorite of mine
It was almost 3 years ago when Rick Beato broke this song down and got me into metal. I still don't know any more about musical theory and composition, but I understand a lot of the more intuitive things you describe about this track. What's special to me about this song is how orchestral it is. The ending is beautiful, of course, and probably a key reason I kept giving it a chance until I decided I liked it, but there is more depth in the rest of the song too. I saw a comment one time describing the sound in the final verse, and it's hard to hear over Spencer's insane vocals, but there's a very grand, epic orchestral sound mixed in with the metal. I don't know if this is one of my true favorite Periphery songs, but I'm glad it was my first. I kinda feel like he should do Ragnarok next 😁
That's so cool that Beato video got you into prog. I was so excited when he decided to break this song down and was thinking if any song could bridge the gap into prog metal for people it'd be this one. 👍👍
I was already into a good bit of prog, but had been skirting around Periphery with this weird idea that they were more mainstream than actually prog, but Beato doing this song broke the ice for me and I fucking love the band now. If I had to pick one favorite, it may be Absolomb because it started my journey and is still just a phenomenal track. So stoked to see Geebz breaking it down too.
That's pretty much the exact same thing that happened to me haha! The vocals and the composition was so captivating I got addicted to Periphery. Satellites would be an awesome tune to break down also!
one of the most underrated song in the entire Periphery catalog. That high note Spencer hits before the guitar solo, the sections of 5 and the overall vocal performance of this song get me every time.
I don't know if someone already pointed it out, but the arrangement at the end is actually a foreshadow of what's to come in the context of the album. The end here is actually the main hook for the song "Lune" of that same album. It's just played with guitars in Lune. The song "The way the news goes" of that same album has a piano arrangement of that part at the end, too. So it's a recurring theme of the album.
Man I remember my sister introducing me to periphery when they released their first album, and I’ve loved them every since. All of them are fantastic musicians and their style is so unique. Edit: Scarlet and Luck as a Constant from P2 are amazing songs from an amazing album
I think I speak for most people here in saying we look forward to hearing your 7 string compositions and we'd all enjoy hearing you weigh in on band-related news, musicality, and "popular" opinion.
Oh heck yes! First time I heard this song, man that aggressive bass intro perked my ears up, and the clean guitars are just such a perfect compliment. Rick Beato did a fantastic breakdown on this song that really shows the layers and melodies that all fuse together, it's truly wonderful. Also that note Spencer hits is just *chefs kiss*
Kia Ora Geebz! I can't thank you enough for continuing on with Periphery, they are forever my number one favourite artists, consistently making music and evolving, I just flippin love them so much 🖤 And to watch you enjoying and peeling back the much loved layers of their songs, that I've already listened to hundreds of who knows of times, is such a delight for me being a fan of your work and theirs. I've paused it 2 seconds in to pour my heart out here, time to make a large coffee, sink into the couch and savour this one haha 🥰 Love your work Geebz, please keep it up as long as you love it too 💕 Aloha 🤙🏼
Your comments and interpretation of the music is helping aspiring composers broaden their skills in making music and mixing. Love youre stuff. Misha Mansoor is the driving force behind Periphery.
I just purchased the Mark Holcomb PRS signature guitar. It’s amazing, I absolutely love it. His signature Seymour Duncan Alpha and Omega pickups are so great.
Congrats on the almost one year Geebz! Pleasure to have been around for the journey! Would love to see you react to either Satellites, or Stranger Things by Periphery!
If you like long songs that allow the listener to sit back and rinse in the riff, you need to check out Opeth. I recommend The Drapery Falls, Bleak, or Ghost of Perdition.
I thought I spotted a 7 string in one of your previous videos! My wife just bought me one for our 5th wedding anniversary (it's the "wood" anniversary after all) and Im so glad I get to explore all that extra range. Excited to see what you do with yours!
One super awesome thing with this song, particularly the orchestral part at the end. The melody and chord changes are kind of like a preview to Lune, the album's closing track (and one of my all time favorites). I think there's a few other parts in this album that have these motifs that preview other parts in other songs.
That killer bass sound comes from the pedal made by Karnivool's John Stockman! Check out the Alpha/Omega pedal. edit: Also, the drummer is Matt Halpern, and he's awesome. He has a drum playthrough of the followup to this song, Lune, that's a really good illustration of how a percussionist can create an emotional part that supports an equally emotional song. May be worth your time, Geebz.
Lune is one of the most beautiful tracks ever written by a prog band. Would be amazing for the channel. Halperns ability to add emotion through drums is out of this world.
The fact that you mentioned the ambient guitar parts they often utilize at 8:30 is cool because it does go under appreciated by some amongst all the chugging riffs/solo's & leadwork sometimes. It is actually kind of as you described in their live sound because that they typically have 2 guitars chugging the rhythm parts hard L/R and then the ambient clean parts usually down the centre, one of the cool capabilities with having 3 guitarists for sure. This whole record is quite varied & interesting, you can tell Misha definitely upped the cinematic/triumphant aspects with all the orchestral arrangements & such. Interesting tidbit the section at 10:15 is a call back to an older track of theirs (I forget the name though haha)
Thank you mister Geebz, one of my favorite songs of Periphery.. the orchestral part touches something inside my soul, entire song does, but this part especially
I think I know the commentary you were alluding to. Prog metal/rock often requires a good attention span, but if you have the patience to go on the journey it's very rewarding.
Love the channel and really like the musical aspect you bring! As a drummer, it's always nice to hear someone who can hear all the things that go on and into a song! Because as a drummer, we can play and compose to many aspects. Keep it up man!
Okay, I don't want to make too many of these comments, but here's one more for your 30-day anniversary countdown. Masamune by Periphery would be absolutely bodacious. Take care.
I've made the suggestion before, but it bears repeating again. I would love to see a review on My Famed Disappearing Act by Thank You Scientist. I feel like it's something that's right up your alley.
Either that or Blood on the Radio. That being said, all their stuff is great. I'd also strongly recommend Native Construct, namely "Come Hell or High Water"
Such an amazing song.. was an old Bulb song Misha did, and they finally made it into a full track for P3. Every song on P3 is amazing, their best work IMO. Great reaction as ever Geebz!!
dude thanks so much for reacting to this.. periphery is my favorite band and i’m stoked that you appreciate the little things that make them such a stellar band 🖤
You should really listen to Racecar from Periphery I. It's a 15 minute masterpiece which in my opinion is their best guitar work ever AND it features a guest solo from Jeff Loomis.
Ahhh daaaamn he needed the transition into Lune so badly!!! Aaaaaagghhhh. Oh well, at least you’re still enjoying these songs but holy cow man, you’re going to love it all so much more when you allow yourself to listen to the albums from top to bottom! 🤘🏻
Great video Geebz. I got into Periphery through Rick Beato's video on the same song (WMTSG episode 42 if I remember correctly?). Thought that maybe the band Roselia might be a stopping point. Their song OvertuRE (yes, correct spelling) was a fun surprise for me. Just an idea. Keep up the good work. And best of luck with your compositions, I look forward to hearing them:)
Here is a request as per your new video for the 30 day countdown. Try out "Satellites" I recommend the Drum playthrough version because it plays the track with the added benefit of seeing the insanity of the drummer Matt Halpern! Enjoy man! Thanks for the content!
I don’t remember you doing Racecar from Periphery. Another great one and it’s around 15 minutes long if I remember correctly. The Loomis guitar solo is out of this world.
I love that its not only the "most popular" songs with you and that you revisit bands for more of a broad idea of what the oveall sound of a group has to offer. thanks for this pick. not one of my faves. but, great band and great breakdown. thx geebz.
Absolomb has always been one of my favorites, even though it's from their weakest album (in my opinion). I'd recommend listening to Omega, it's my favorite Periphery song. It's such a powerful song, but it's even more emotional and epic when listened to in context with the entirety of Juggernaut Alpha and Juggernaut Omega.
Great choice, Geebz! Definitely not a Periphery song I expected you to react to, but glad ya did. I'd recommend Omega next. Next to Reptile, I think it's their best song. 🤘
Always nice to circle back to Periphery! Such an intelligent band! Besides the two suggestions I have been putting up here (MESHUGGAH - i / THE FIVE HUNDRED - Walls of Jericho) it would be very cool if you'd get to know some old school death-metal bands! BLOODBATH CANNIBAL CORPSE DEATH ENTOMBED GORGUTS IMMOLATION MORBID ANGEL SUFFOCATION 🤘
Nice!! Congrats on the 7 string! Cool intro riffs to check out to practice to are, Steve Vais “China doll” and Joe satriani “mind storm” I think it’ll make it fun to get used to riff out on a 7. Just Some of my go to riffs that are fun.
Seconding BTBAM "The Future Is Behind Us" Although it's tempting to keep recommending their entire back catalogue, I think this new song will scratch you in just the right way: ruclips.net/video/445arWTPkxo/видео.html
So… now you have to listen to ‘Lune’. It’s what the orchestral outro of this song is pulling from. SO interested to hear your take on it! Three flavors to choose from… Studio… ruclips.net/video/xtLCZ2_-Beg/видео.html Live play through… ruclips.net/video/VHtAgbx6GFc/видео.html Live in London… ruclips.net/video/Qtp-hQe5P7I/видео.html I kind of recommend listening to all three in that order. It’s just insane how great these musicians are. I can never get enough periphery. So glad that you are delving deeper into them!
Matt Halpern is the drummer for periphery. Nolly Getgood is the bassist though since 2017 he mostly just helps the band by mixing and tracking bass on the albums
Though, if the drums sound similar to Getgood drums samples, I think it's because they track the drums in Nolly's studio, which he used to record the samples for Getgood Drums (also Matt is a co-owner of Getgood Drums)
Thanks Geebz! Always appreciate your energy and analysis! Would love to hear your thoughts on some more Aussie prog/alt rock in the vein of Karnivool! Cog - The Middle and Dead Letter Circus - I Am stand out and I think you'd dig them!! Cheers mate!
Absolomb is such a good song Periphery 1 (selftitled) is my favorite Periphery album. It was all practically home made by Misha. Ow My Feelings and Letter Experiment are songs you should 100% do videos on!
Im sure youll never see this but god it makes me so happy to see someone else like me that just listens with true genuine joy. Watching your facial expressions has memories flooding back of my first listens of alot of these metal songs and I am so insanely happy for it
This and the bad thing we're my favs of them until I dove deeper..now all there stuff is my favs lol..guitar work is insane..iv played for 23 years and still wish I could be that good lol
Babyface!! Lookin a bit younger my man! Hell of a song to react to, keep up the good work! Also check out Fire on a Hill by Hands Like Houses. Its massive!
Not sure if you or your fans are aware of the new Leprous album APHELION. It is absolutely fantastic. Would love to see you react to the song Nighttime Disguise, but seriously more Leprous would be great.
Been digging it here! I was late to Leprous, only started listening to Pitfalls about 2 months ago and it's been on repeat, and now Aphelion has taken its spot. Personally I'd love to see Geebz do "Distant Bells", that is genuinely one of the most captivating songs I've ever heard, Einars voice is truly magnificent.

This is an old Bulb song that they added orchestral accents and lyrics. Misha talked about this in the "making of P3" video.

Besides the two suggestions I have been putting up here (MESHUGGAH - i / THE FIVE HUNDRED - Walls of Jericho) it would be very cool if you'd get to know some old school death-metal bands!
BLOODBATH
CANNIBAL CORPSE
DEATH
ENTOMBED
GORGUTS
IMMOLATION
MORBID ANGEL
SUFFOCATION
🤘
Nice!! Congrats on the 7 string! Cool intro riffs to check out to practice to are, Steve Vais “China doll” and Joe satriani “mind storm” I think it’ll make it fun to get used to riff out on a 7. Just Some of my go to riffs that are fun.
my fav periphury's !!
Seconding BTBAM "The Future Is Behind Us"
Although it's tempting to keep recommending their entire back catalogue, I think this new song will scratch you in just the right way:

Yes I requested this yay!!
Hey Geebz, I feel like you would enjoy their guitarist Misha's solo stuff (under the name Bulb).
In particular: Bulb - Echo Teuffel
@Key of Geebz you got a 7-string Music Man!? Awesome! Did I miss this in a recent video, if so which one?
So… now you have to listen to ‘Lune’. It’s what the orchestral outro of this song is pulling from. SO interested to hear your take on it!
Three flavors to choose from…

Live play through… ruclips.net/video/VHtAgbx6GFc/видео.html
Live in London… ruclips.net/video/Qtp-hQe5P7I/видео.html
I kind of recommend listening to all three in that order.
Unrivaled bass tone
I reaaaaaallyyyy wanna get your take on “To The Hellfire” by Lorna Shore. It’s breaking the internet right now 😂
Excellent choice of song. RIP to beard
idc what anyone says about long prog songs, they're great, periphery does them best, and they are so incredibly memorable!
Great song!!! Machine Head - A Farewell to Arms!!
That was good.. I'm a fan
Love the content Geebz! Hope you review The Warning! someday soon!
This band is so great
Absolomb is such a good song
Periphery 1 (selftitled) is my favorite Periphery album.
May or may not be a huge fan of The Bad Thing but who knows 😏
Seriously though that main riff is groovy and heavy
And I've seen a guy, who unironically said, that Periphery is nothing, but 0-0-0 xDD
Dude we need to see you play periphery on that new 7 string of yours 😊😘 love bro x
absolomb is absolutely one of my favorites from Periphery. i really appreciate all the videos you make sir! Awwwwwright!
Babyface!! Lookin a bit younger my man! Hell of a song to react to, keep up the good work! Also check out Fire on a Hill by Hands Like Houses. Its massive!
Check out Rainbow Gravity by Periphery. It's got all the layers you like! Great use of 3 guitarists
Yes! This is my favorite Periphery song!
Personally I'd love to see Geebz do "Distant Bells", that is genuinely one of the most captivating songs I've ever heard, Einars voice is truly magnificent.
you cant do justice to periphery with one song, each album is a whole song in its entirety. 😂
Outcome by Drewsif Stalin's Musical Endeavors has a similar overtone and feel to this. Highly recommend reviewing that song.
Love this band
Geebz and Periphery. I could not click faster.
