Yes. So far I've listened to New Levels New Devils, Muse and The Most Hated ep. I think my favorite tracks so far are Sweet Tea, Champagne, Goose, Yas and OD
As a guitarist, I always loved the guitar parts in this song. This video made me really appreciate the rhythm section in this band. The whole band is just so talented
Crazy seeing the difference in how Rickreacts to this compared to the modern top 10 songs. It's like he's hearing Audioslave or Led Zepplin again for the first time. You can just tell Polyphia blows his freaking mind and it has to be almost impossible to blow this man's mind.
Never heard these guys before. First line was like wtf? By the end I was totally getting it. Perfect rendition of EDM, but on instruments. Insane that they can sound so much like machines. That hi hat! Didn’t know that was possible! Love it!
One of my favorite things about the trap influence here is that Phrygian scale modality. In trap music you often hear an emphasis on the scale degrees that are just a half step away from each other. it gives you a really strong pull toward resolution. trap music also works really well in harmonic minor for that reason! Love the theory talk, Rick!
This is actual modern music-breaking convention, not using any guitar cliches and played so well. One of the few original bands to come out in the last few decades.
Just a note, the whistling noise at the beginning is actually Y2K's producer tag, he uses it on all of his songs, even before GOAT, but it just works so damn well. Ari is a genius!
I freaked when i first heard GOAT. I’m basic, so i knew Y2K from bbno$ and Yung Gravy. When i heard his tag on GOAT, i instantly fled to google to look up the credits for the song. lol
@@ripperplaysclon152 Yeah, the loon sound. Also used in every movie ever when they want to give you this outside, somewhat lonely to scary feeling. Dunno if it's a good idea to use such a commonly (or even overused) sound as a producer tag.
I totally agree. But I’d add that it’s not just the guitar riff but the rest of the parts (bass and drums) and how they all fit together that can, and should, be a new foundation for the evolution of music.
@@davidfleuchaus Yeah, I was thinking originally more in the context of rock and players and how those things tend to carry forward. I’m actually a bass player. Haha... the song itself is what makes the riff live in the space where it’s possible to be a landmark riff, more accurately. Without good production the audience can’t be reached. The bass and drums are absolutely phenomenal as well, obviously.
When I listen to Polyphia, I hear shades of JS Bach. The layers of point & counterpoint, the mathematical genius, the otherworldly beauty. Modern yet extremely classical as well.
All the guys in Polyphia are absolute masters in their respective instruments! I found the sound of this song very refreshing when i heard it for the first time some time ago.
Fun fact: That little bird call that Rick refers to at 4:30 is actually Y2K's "callsign" as he produced most of the album and isn't exclusive to just polyphia! :)
The bird in question is a common loon. We have so many in Canada, we put them on our currency 🙂

My favourite thing about the song is the way the guitars cover each other. The layering and the filling through harmony. As an aspiring producer, this song gives me a musical woody.

It would be cool if you could break down "Under A Glass Moon". Thanks Rick, I appreciate every one of these you present.
@@martinpaddle kinda of get annoyed when people say this. Improvising can occur in lots of different genres. Jazz also has pretty specific harmonic language and sound. Something otherwise would be classified as jazz influenced
I've been a guitarist for more than 25 years and I notice the instrument first when listening to music, but the drummer at the end of the song is the real star of the show to me.
That PRS is a beauty. That color. Wow! Never listened to Polyphia. And to you blockers, this is why Rick’s channel is important. He introduces the world to your music. I’m now a Polyphia fan, thanks to Rick. 👍
This is some of the most unique playing I've heard in a long time. It has elements of acoustic players advanced harmonics with that strange electric pedal ring tone.

Never heard or seen this guy before, but wow was I blown away with the way he breaks down this bands sound. He really knows what he is talking about from a true knowledge and history based platform. Just incredible. I will admit, from first glance I was skeptical on his knowledge of this new era sound with stuff like trap and effects made with a computer. However it just shows that all this new stuff stems from an already deep rooted rich history. Great stuff here!
Great comment from you. He has over 20-years-plus music production experience, and with that maturity and love of music he knows how to explain and break down how the music is built up from every section and instrument.
And again, what gets me so much in this song, as so often with great music, is the use of contrasts: contrasts between space in the music and it being chockers full, contrasts between sounds which remind me of nature (water drops falling into a pond, bamboo flutes) and sounds at other times that are so futuristic and distorted, the higher pitched ‘acoustic’ guitar sounds contrasted with these heavy, dark bass and drums…, mindblowing contrasts everywhere. Such a great piece-.
i know Tim gets most of the credit for the main riff , but damn Scotts guitar part is just so darn awesome . I just love how melodic it is , and the tone his guitar has is quite honestly what inspires me to become a better guitar player in general .
Tim is almost otherworldly, must be how people felt when watching/meeting a Beethoven/Bach during their life. He almost challenges me to keep up (fat fingered chance here LOL) instead of giving up. I rank him up there with John 5 for pure joy when watching, they both just enjoy music and it shows. Been playing almost 40 years (51 now, cut my teeth on hair metal/classic rock) and I will never be that good, but it doesn't hurt at all. May the band survive the fame train.
Holy crap that's absolutely mind blowing hearing the parts separately. I had no idea the synth was as complex as it was and how much it added and hearing the drums + bass was fairly breathtaking because they actually play this live. I was in drum line all 4 years of high school and I've never heard such amazingly timed and performed parts. Other reactors have mentioned the bass being a good mix with the drums but I could never pick them out enough to hear how truly insane it is, so thank you so much for showing it to us so well; I've gotta check out more of your videos
Definitely not ignored now. It's crazy what's possible with bass music nowadays. Electronic musicians make all sorts of insane sounds with synthesized basses, I often wonder what would happen if one applied those techniques to bass guitar...
Yeah it’s becoming quite weird to listen to older stuff now that just doesn’t have any of this modern crazy low end dynamics - something like Prince sounds thin and anaemic af despite him being a sexy mf funk machine genius

I've had the great pleasure of doing sound for Polyphia, and I must say that they are the real deal folks, as nice and proficient on their instruments as a sound tech could wish for!
They're so different from the rest of the "Hype bullshit" young musicians. The depth of talent and total lack of ego in these guys despite their age blows my mind...
You know Polyphia is legit when they turn Rick Beato into Ric Flair. Love your enthusiasm and this video. 👊👊
Lmfaoo Ric Flair. Good one, bro
That made me legit laugh out loud hahaha
Hahahahaha
Wooooo!
This made me LOL for real. Hilarious!
I got to meet these dudes back when they were touring their self titled, and hadn't started playing big shows yet. They ate some of my snacks and were stoked that I had pizza Combos 😂 super super chill, down to earth dudes who were just barely older than me and playing guitar about the same amount of time that I had. Unreal how much more skilled they are though 😂 they gave me some great pointers too, especially Scotty.
Polyphia is a special breed of musicians that compose parts that are ridiculously technical yet ridiculously catchy all at the same time. Their song Euphoria is another good example.
Agreed! My favorite combo
I think this is what really makes a prog song, when it's not just complex, but also catchy enough that can be appreciated by all kinds of people.
my fav song from them
@@terran236 Of course, Nick Johnson’s part in that is great too
I agree. What's the point of a super technical song if it doesn't sound good?
G.O.A.T. Blew me away the first time I heard it. Polyphia is my favorite progressive rock band.
i honestly dislike everything they've done, the only thing i like about it is the drums. Its just "show-off" music, which is just unintereating to me, because it feels like it says nothing interesting.

Rick Beato, the coolest guy around... Rubbing elbows with young popular musicians.

Rick is so cool. Very seldom has anything bad to say about music, always encouraging and awesome
Glad he’s hanging out with us young folks! 😉
What's cool is that Rick reads the comments the guitarist has been commenting for awhile.....
He always positive, and he knows what he's talking about. That's all you need for access to just about anyone in the industry.
I love that you explained what flexing was haha. Never crossed my mind that some folks might not know what that means
That is true, a lot of Rick Audience, not to call them old but maybe they aren't up to date on new words so it was a nice touch from Rick to do that

my concern would be more that folks don't know any other word for it anymore ;)
@@Leo-fq3sx it's true. I'm old.
Yeah that was a good touch
I was very hesitant when I first came across this band, thinking they're just another soulless super-shredders... but it's starting to grow on me, I think they're genius
"Soulless Super-Shredders" xD
I'm borrowing that word. Gonna call all attention-seeking shredders only showing off and not true to music "Soulless Super-Shredders" from now on.
I didn’t like them at first, but now they are my all-time favorite band. There music just stuck with me. I think the most hated album was a good gateway into their music.
Felt the same way. I was like "Wow theyre incredible but idk if I can listen to a bunch of guys flipping through their catalog of shredology like OG DreamTheatre". Then RUclips brought Playing God back onto my feed, I gave it another listen and I was hooked.
I like how Rick breaks down “ flex” for us old guys lol thanks Rick!
I'm excited for all the people who've discovered Polyphia thanks to this episode
Yep. I'm in my late 60's and recognise this as supreme musicianship/composition/production. I'll catch their other work.
I discovered periphery thanks to Rick
I'm 40 and this is the first time I've ever heard of this band. Feels like the time I discovered Pink Floyd. I can't wait to check out all of their music.
@@tk20channel They have some really cool stuff. Might want to also check out animals as leaders
All technicality, zero soul. This music is empty and heartless. It stinks.
Love how much open space there is in the bass and drums. Makes what they are doing much more impactful.
All these kids who are monsters on their instruments makes me so happy. You are all creating a new form of jazz, well done. Seriously.
I'm not sure if G.O.A.T is considered jazz in any way, but I agree that those guys are monsters on their instruments
When the cicada beat is not a copy&paste for the millionth time, but played by a real person: A R T

Thank you very much for this one Rick!
Haven't heard of Covet. Now I have. Thank you!
I'll second that.
Yvette rocks man.
Another +1 for Rick interviewing Yvette Young
So, Rick... Am I the only one who hears LOADS of flamenco influence baked into this specific type of guitar style?
the hesitations, syncopations, specific pushing and pulling. It's very flamenco.
And dubstep
I feel this about polyphia's recent stuff since I heard O.D. honestly, I love it.
He said the guitar is classical and Spanish mixed.
The bass playing too. Really cool stuff.
Check out Robert Svard's flamenco cover of GOAT, it's AMAZING and works so well!
I had no idea this band existed. Enter "What Makes This Song Great?" and now I've been listening to them all day. Thanks Rick for bringing Polyphia to my attention.
Have you heard Saucy yet?
Yes. So far I've listened to New Levels New Devils, Muse and The Most Hated ep. I think my favorite tracks so far are Sweet Tea, Champagne, Goose, Yas and OD
I’ve never heard this song in my entire life but that guitar at the beginning was absolutely insanely awesome.
This is why i love this series!
Rick just introduced me to an amazing band and beautiful music!
Thanks a lot Rick!
And here are those 808s: ... (silence)... Man, listening on a laptop really sucks sometimes😂

I'm listening on a high end headphone rig and didn't hear it either. Thanks, RUclips compression!
Preach.
I was listening on my phone. 😂
Lol me on my iPhone
We FINALLY found a guitar lick that Rick can't just automatically play by ear!
Tims use of harmonics makes anything he plays just magical! What a crazy talented kid!
@Adam Everything is a remix. Mixing ideas in a way that works is precisely what creativity is about.
Just a note, the whistling noise at the beginning is actually Y2K's producer tag, he uses it on all of his songs, even before GOAT, but it just works so damn well. Ari is a genius!
I was gonna point this out too but I'm glad someone else caught it! I listen to a bunch of Y2K and hear that sound so much :P
It’s also the sound of a loon.
A loon is a duck-like bird that’s native to Canada, and their cry sounds exactly like that.
Dunno if it's a good idea to use such a commonly (or even overused) sound as a producer tag.

it’s going to be the new song you hear in every guitar center
@@hotman718 that won’t stop us from trying 😂
I totally agree. But I’d add that it’s not just the guitar riff but the rest of the parts (bass and drums) and how they all fit together that can, and should, be a new foundation for the evolution of music.
@@davidfleuchaus Yeah, I was thinking originally more in the context of rock and players and how those things tend to carry forward. I’m actually a bass player. Haha... the song itself is what makes the riff live in the space where it’s possible to be a landmark riff, more accurately. Without good production the audience can’t be reached. The bass and drums are absolutely phenomenal as well, obviously.
@@almightytreegod “phenomenal” Yup.
Now we've learned how many times Rick can say "Whoo!" in the span of 20 minutes.

When I listen to Polyphia, I hear shades of JS Bach. The layers of point & counterpoint, the mathematical genius, the otherworldly beauty. Modern yet extremely classical as well.
Saw them live pre-pandemic, and they were such a fun band. Probably one of the most fun concerts I've been to in 30 years.
All the guys in Polyphia are absolute masters in their respective instruments!
I found the sound of this song very refreshing when i heard it for the first time some time ago.
The two clay's are literally the fuxkin tightest rhythm section to ever exist! Those boys literally fit like a glove !
I love how many spaces there are in all instruments. Leads to a real heavy groove I feel.
I love how this series is mostly just an excuse for rick to geek out and vibe to his fav music im all here for it
I heard this and thought, "I need to hear this broken down" and of course, my man Rick does it, and beautifully. You are such a legend, Rick.
My favorite RUclips guy talks about one of my favorite songs from the last years - I am happy
Fun fact: That little bird call that Rick refers to at 4:30 is actually Y2K's "callsign" as he produced most of the album and isn't exclusive to just polyphia! :)
Another song that has this is "Red Rubies" from the head in the clouds album from 88 rising
The bird in question is a common loon. We have so many in Canada, we put them on our currency 🙂
My favourite thing about the song is the way the guitars cover each other. The layering and the filling through harmony. As an aspiring producer, this song gives me a musical woody.
Polyphia is a great band, their approach

I've been a guitarist for more than 25 years and I notice the instrument first when listening to music, but the drummer at the end of the song is the real star of the show to me.
The stuff that he explains starting 3:30 is genius, too bad most instrumentalists don't care about how much of what they play reaches the audience.
That PRS is a beauty. That color. Wow! Never listened to Polyphia. And to you blockers, this is why Rick’s channel is important. He introduces
the world to your music. I’m now a Polyphia fan, thanks to Rick. 👍
Probably the most beautiful PRS I've ever seen that thing is gorgeous
I love when guitar and bass together sound almost like a single instrument, the way a piano player uses two hands to play two parts on one instrument.
You're more right than you think. Tim writes on piano, and makes the left hand bass/rhythm guitar, and plays the right hand as melody
Bass and Guitar are played so percussive that's the catch this song has. Brilliant.
This is some of the most unique playing I've heard in a long time. It has elements of acoustic players advanced harmonics with that strange electric pedal ring tone.
Rick reacting his "whooo" to this song was my most anticipated video of 2021.

You must be from PEI! It is "Never heard nor SAW this guy" NOT "seen" and yes Rick is crucial!

His riffs on Saucy and Icronic are some of the tastiest around.
It’s like let’s throw a completely random jazz fusion solo in this song make it sound amazing!
I've watched too much Tim I can literally recognize his clothes
Tim is almost otherworldly, must be how people felt when watching/meeting a Beethoven/Bach during their life. He almost challenges me to keep up (fat fingered chance here LOL) instead of giving up. I rank him up there with John 5 for pure joy when watching, they both just enjoy music and it shows. Been playing almost 40 years (51 now, cut my teeth on hair metal/classic rock) and I will never be that good, but it doesn't hurt at all. May the band survive the fame train.
This is the most interesting modern music I've ever heard. Absolutely mind blowing.
about time this song was featured on this series, i hope O.D. also gets its own episode too. That song is so insane.
Honestly every song of theirs on the past two releases could go on this series
Holy crap that's absolutely mind blowing hearing the parts separately. I had no idea the synth was as complex as it was and how much it added and hearing the drums + bass was fairly breathtaking because they actually play this live.
I was in drum line all 4 years of high school and I've never heard such amazingly timed and performed parts. Other reactors have mentioned the bass being a good mix with the drums but I could never pick them out enough to hear how truly insane it is, so thank you so much for showing it to us so well; I've gotta check out more of your videos
The kids these days do have great heavy bass tones. I think kind of ignored when i was younger unfortunately.
Definitely not ignored now. It's crazy what's possible with bass music nowadays. Electronic musicians make all sorts of insane sounds with synthesized basses, I often wonder what would happen if one applied those techniques to bass guitar...
Yeah it’s becoming quite weird to listen to older stuff now that just doesn’t have any of this modern crazy low end dynamics - something like Prince sounds thin and anaemic af despite him being a sexy mf funk machine genius
people criticize trap music without realizing how much goes into the low end
Clay Gober is such an underrated bassist of the past few years, have never heard anyone else hybrid pick bass like him
The muted triplets always get me
How is he underrated?
As much as I love this song, I love that Rick loves it that much more.
This is a song/ band that wouldn't normally cross my radar.
Thank you, Rick, for the introduction to Polyphia. Good stuff!
This is the first of the WMTSG series where every single facet of the recording is amazing. Maybe it has to do with my.umfamiliarity with the piece and group, but I found myself hanging on to every note, riff, and comment throughout the entire video.

I dont know who's more talented lol. This young man for coming up with such a strange medley or you sir for deciphering it and explaining it in such detail and breaking it down and actually being able to play parts of it lol. Just wow.
