I needed this. Every time I eat what I actually want, I beat myself up over it. I feel like I let myself down. Thank you for letting me know it’s ok to let go and eat whatever the hell I want and not feel guilty!

I agree. I never looked at it that way. I feel like the more I have food rules the more I stress out and then the more I overeat.

You're going to get backlash talking about intuitive eating no matter what... because like you said, diet culture runs DEEP. People get very upset when you try to tell them what they have been told might not be accurate. Diet has become as personal and sensitive as religion in conversation. It has become so toxic with everyone preaching and judging one another. But your message is incredible and is helping people. So keep using your platform for good💗💗💗

love, love, LOVE this Becca! the world should hear your voice! Can't tell u how many times I hear women saying, "I'll just have 1.... and then they eat 20 and feel guilty. But when you are intuitive, this doesn't have to happen anymore! xx

You briefly touched on a really key point....eating for pleasure. I think many people, myself included, struggle with learning to stop eating when full even when you're tempted to keep going because it "tastes so good". Yes, we end up not feeling well by going overboard, but then that feeling dissipates and it's easy to forget how poorly it made you feel. Would love to hear more also about being mindful in relation to intuitive eating, if that makes sense.

Wow. So much to say. What you're saying is truly groundbreaking. I have never heard anything like this before in my life! I am on Weight Watchers right now and a lot of this is resonating with me. I do feel somewhat restricted and obsessed. I think I'm a little while away from hopping on board with this concept because it is so different than what I'm used to but it is really planting the seed. I appreciate you and these videos so much! Don't stop!

I agree with this SO much! Most of my life I've eaten this way and have never been "overweight". I find that the more you listen to your body, the more you'll understand what makes it feel good. Right now I'm realizing that my body doesn't feel great on coffee, a very sad realization and something I fight. I get a heavy, dragging feeling when I drink it, even though I LOVE the taste. When I drink tea instead, my body feels light and functions better. It's also true that if you eat a bunch of junk, your body will start screaming for water, nutrients and vitamins, usually through vegetables and fresh, whole foods.
Thank you for sharing this message. I shared it with my mom and sister and I'll share it on my FB pages too because it's just so important.
Quick story: I was eating whatever I wanted and when I got home I decided to cut sugar, wheat, and dairy as a reset. Then I discovered I was practically eating paleo already so I jumped on that bandwagon, which was great but expensive and honestly, my body doesn't crave THAT much meat so I was forcing a lot of protein through meat sources into my body unnaturally. Then, because it's restrictive even though it's "healthful" I swung back to the Standard American Diet and enjoyed it but developed health problems so once again decided to start restricting. My husband said that I seemed my healthiest when I wasn't cutting anything out but also eating for health, which is what you promote on your channel.
I think it's important that everyone learns to listen to their bodies and to teach their children to do so also. Don't force a child to finish their plates if they've tried each item. Respect when they say "I am full." Also, provide healthful options all day. My kids will gobble down a veggie tray if it's presented. Just some thoughts. Thanks again!

This advice is perfect. I did this and felt so liberated, and now I'm healthier than I've ever been PLUS I'm stronger and in the best shape I've ever been in. I now have the strength and the desire to workout. It's something I'd never felt before. I WANT to work out now. I WANT to eat healthy now. It's not a chore anymore. Oh and I also do eat a treat when I truly want it. Intuitive eating is freedom.

Thank you so damn much Becca. I needed to hear this so badly!!
It's not the lack of rules that scares me so much... more the weight gain (which I know would happen for me based on past experience and my current eating rules and restrictions). As you say though, isn't it still worth it for reaching a place where you feel happy and healthy and don't have to constantly live around your own food rules?! YES. Time to change...

Thanks Becca again for sharing your knowledge about nutrition. I took a nutrition class in culinary school that taught me to cook whole real foods the proper way. Cooking is not simply for our eating enjoyment, but rather, cooking is about handling and cooking food without losing their natural nutrients. My teacher shared her insight about health fads and trends; fitness and exercise. It was such an insightful and important class. I hope many of your subscribers find freedom through your videos.

I am in tears watching the end of this video! Really! Eating so your body feels good and hits it's own ideal size and shape is ground breaking. I know it may seem logical and common sense to others, but it just all clicked. My problem is I don't feel good. I'm trying to listen to my body, but was restricted for the last year and have very few moments of feeling optimal (i.e. sleeping well, energy enough to do things, mental clarity, no migraines.) Do you have any suggestions on what I can do, while eating intuitively, to feel my best? There must be something I'm missing. Thanks a million for your optimism and real perspective on living a full and happy life.

I was diagnosed with anorexia like two years ago but have been struggling with it for eight years. I started recovery in January, and I’m all in this time. I’m going to win and I’m going to be free.
I’ve been struggling with eating when my body tells me to eat. I just ignore the hunger cues because that’s what I’ve been doing for years and it’s so normal for me. I’ve always been scared that my body doesn’t know what it’s doing. I thought it only needed/wanted a few almonds a day. That’s what I allowed my body to have.
But I want to be happy and I want to trust my body. And to do that I have to eat. My body knows what it’s doing.

WOW! I've recently been researching more about intuitive eating and I didn't think it'd be hard until I realised I needed to stop setting expectations for what I look like on the outside. I'm a personal trainer and persuing a master's in exercise science so body composition is a huge part of that. I want to learn more about this new way of thinking, but I think it will take me a while to fully understand and accept it. I'm surprising myself at how hard it is for me to accept this new view! Which makes me feel like there's something missing from my current beliefs. Becca, you're making me question everything!! 😊😥😬

    Hey Becca!
Love this video! This time with my weight loss I’ve been trying intuitive eating and I’m trying to listen to my body while also picking the healthy alternatives. So I open the fridge and ask “what can I have that’s healthily” and usually instead of grabbing the bad stuff I grab something like veggies but if I really want something else then I’ll have the other thing.
My question is, How do you understand your body’s messages to your brain?
E.g. I had pork chops and ground beef yesterday after like 3 weeks of healthy choices (not that they aren’t healthy I just over did it). So obviously I may be low on some type of vitamin or mineral or maybe I’ve been too low on intaking protein.
So I’m trying to listen to my body but also be more aware of what I’m eating and how my body reacts to certain foods.
How do you know for sure what you’re missing if you’re trying to eat the foods that make you feel good but still are lacking in some areas? (FYI I have been losing weight and I’m doing it for health reasons and just to make myself feel my best).

Hi Becca! Could you talk about eating when you're not hungry but know you will be? Sometimes I get into situations, say for example at school, where it's my set lunch time but I'm not that hungry. I know if I don't eat, I will be starving the next period. I try to eat in class if I can but I can't always do that. Another would be I have to be somewhere and my last meal was a few hours ago. Knowing I'll be gone long, I might eat because it's the open opportunity, but I'm not that hungry. Is this a part of intuitive eating? Thank you. xx

I love the message You're conveying. With me the thing is - I have eaten quite healthy and excercised for many years, but I am overweight andbydoctor's standards or by BMI I should be weighing less. But I love my body, I think I look good. However thepressure to be slim and slender is so ingrained in me that I try and try different ways of eating. For instance this summer I was eating HUGE amounts of fruits and veggies. The diahrrea I developed was horrible. The same thing with fibre - if I eat too much a fibre, I get bloated af. Know Your body. Great idea. The best way to live. LOVE YOU. BESOS from Poland

So many of us who don’t have the “body” that society seems as the most attractive get told by other people that we NEED to lose weight and thus diet, restrict, etc. I just hate this. I’m at a point where I really don’t care about others’ opinion- I am happy with my shape and size and that’s all that matters. We do not “need” to diet if we are overweight according to a BMI number. We also don’t need to diet to achieve a particular body. It is difficult to let go of all these things we hear. Very hard, but worth it in the end

  • @MusicLoveMegan

So, I love the idea of intuitive eating it sounds so freeing and natural and awesome. However, here’s my problem.. I haven’t followed any “rules” or “diets” in over a year and I’ve gained over 50 pounds. I don’t feel good mentally or physically but because I’ve been eating so much I basically never feel full even when I pay attention. Also, if left to my own devices I will ALWAYS choose that slice of pizza over the salad despite knowing that the salad will make me feel better physically. I feel like because I’ve allowed myself to eat whatever I want my body has become accustomed or even addicted to these junk foods. So for me personally I need structure so I don’t go completely crazy. Many obese people feel awful but continue eating processed and packaged foods and many of them don’t diet at all either. I think the problem is a little more complicated than if you eat like shit for long enough you’ll eventually choose healthier foods naturally.

    • @MusicLoveMegan
      @MusicLoveMegan 6 лет назад +3

Adding to this, it does take willpower to choose healthy foods over junk. Even if you aren’t counting calories there has to be some structure or else you will never choose the healthy options.

Megan Leanne I’m sorry you’re struggling and I feel for your situation. Intuitive Eating does not work for everyone if you’re insulin resistant. I hope doing some research on this topic will help you. It did for me (I have a normal BMI but am hypoglycemic with most carbs). I appreciate this girl’s philosophy but you may have to follow a protocol to reverse your insulin problem before you become type2 diabetic.
      Good Luck. Take care

First of al, hello! I hope that you are ok. The same happened to me. After 3 years of being able to understand all this, I went through many things. First of all, when I ate intuitively for the first time, I gained a lot of weight ... even more than I had before restricting myself. but, after that, I was learning more of this and of what my body needed. I learned that all foods have different ways of nourishing you, and even though you do not have to raise food and label it "this is bad" or "that's good", you have to understand what there are different foods that make you feel good . I like sweet potatoes, corn, I love broccoli, I like cheese, and I also love jam in general, cookies and pancakes with honey. you have to understand what we like ... recovery is not always linear and will not always be positive, because thanks to it (in my case), I learned many things that I had never understood before ... and I also understood many behaviors that I have had because it was always restricting me and hiding what I wanted, and that also amounts to hiding your personality. that's why I say it's a long process, and maybe you need more time to know WHAT your BODY needs. know how to be comfortable, feel free, feel that you do not have to restrict yourself to be happy and also find your own harmony. For each person it is different because we all have different bodies. good luck ❤️❤️

Becca, great great video! You are a breath of fresh air in this diet and rule bound culture.

I love and appreciate all the great advice - I've been watching a lot of your videos recently as I want to give up the yo-yo diets and learn intuitive eating again. My one question is how you battle an "addiction" to a particular food or ingredient (ex. sugar heavy items)? Or how do you stop eating it when you know its making your body not feel so good?

Quit dieting and listening to food rules. Gained 7 pounds and wanted to freak out and start dieting. Then I calmed down, remembered the things I'm learning, and kept going. Freedom!!! I don't know where my body is going to end up, but I'm getting less scared and more curious.

Almost 40, 3 kids, active, try to eat healthy, I'm a healthy weight, mostly happy with my body, drink plenty of water, but I don't FEEL very good a lot of the time. I'm exhausted, I'm dizzy, I get headaches. I've had several checkups, blood tests, scans for two-thrre years now to make sure everything is ok. But I just can't figure it out. According to my doctors everything is ok. I'm sure it's my diet but I have no idea what to eat. I feel like the way I've always eaten might not be right for my age now. There is definitely a ton of conflicting information out there, thank you for addressing that point. I'm very interested in your concept of intuitive eating. I'll check out some of your other videos. Any specific tips for me though? Thank you

This has been so true for me.
I went a little crazy. I ate like crap for awhile. And slowly I started eating a little better, and better, and now I eat healthy most of the time. Because the York patty just doesn’t taste as good as it used to. But that doesn’t mean I don’t buy pizza or have a margarita!

I really for the life of me will never understand why people can be so nasty. If you disagree it’s totally fine. Constructive criticism is amazing and I’m sure she appreciates it because this is her job and we are her “customers” but saying “Becca you’re full of shit and your recommendations are shit” is just tearing her down. Becca, you don’t deserve that at all. I love your channel, keep doing you boo.

I love your message and videos. I’ve noticed that all the commenters are on the thinner side, I would relate more to someone who’s “overweight” and tired of restricting to lose weight.. anyone please comment if you’re in the same boat.

This is great content! I love your mindset and I'm trying to achieve the same relationship with food! This will help a lot!
Some constructive "criticism" for you. Me and a couple friends have a hard time making it to the end of some of your videos just because it's just you sitting and talking for 20min. 20 min is a long time! Throw in some pictures or some form of visual aids. Do something to make it feel like more of an "episode" rather than a lecture.
Also I can definitely tell you are super passionate about your recent videos. One way I can tell is because you get repetitive at the end! Like maybe you don't feel like you emphasized something enough, so you hit it again and essentially end up saying all the same things and nothing new. In this video for example at 16:00, you're saying stuff you already said!
I hope you find that helpful because I really love your content and I want to keep watching and want more people to follow you! You have such a sweet heart and lots of girls need to hear it!!!

I think that it's not bad to go on a diet, as I'm on one right now but intuitive eating is where I want to be for the rest of my life. I used to use myfitnesspal but I've stopped! I'm now just eating what I think is enough but I've let go of the calorie number. It made me feel anxious. Now I feel much better. Thank you becca for the wonderful advice. You're right though about the dieting culture. Americans are the biggest dieters in world, yet obesity and health issues are on the rise, why? Because of so many bad things that they've been taught to do, such as restrict and restrict which makes them want more. In France, people LOVE food and people intuitively eat there and obesity is so low there. Maybe we need to learn from the French.

    • @taylerallen6945
      @taylerallen6945 6 лет назад

I do actually have a question. You said in one of the previous videos that this is not an ‘eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full diet’ and coupled with that we are eating all of our favorite foods that we have been restricting and are prone to overeating. So I’m thinking more then likely we will overeat them at the beginning. Are you saying that fine? That’s part of the process? And eventually the overeating will stop? I know eventually my body will crave healthier foods, that happens sometimes already, I’m just wondering specifically about the desire to overeat. I’ve just always kind of been confused by that! Once again love these videos!

That's why one of my new years resolutions is to wear a bikini with CONFIDENCE, and not "get a flat stomach, lose x amount of weight, etc". I think a lot of people are just a little lost as to how to start eating healthier. I had to spend so much time after growing up on fast food. I grew up not knowing anything about nutrient dense foods, and I think a lot of people just don't know where to begin.
    Thank you for this, Becca

I've accidentally become an intuitive eater because I'm pregnant. I have a short list of things that don't make me feel icky, so I really do have to listen to how my now pregnant digestive tract can handle stuff. I know 100% sweets make me sour and nauseous, so I don't eat them anymore. I know overly salted things, over spiced things, greasy things make me sick too. I want this better understanding of my body to be permanent. I really believe it will, I tend to become OCD when I get on the diet train. All it does is stress me out and get me nowhere.

I would love to see/hear a video about how to raise kids this way. You obviously need to be the parent and decide meals and not just let kids eat whatever they want whenever they want but I would love to teach my kids to listen to their bodies and shed some “rules”. Do you already have a video about this?

I have never tried dieting. Always believed that we should just eat moderately on bad things and make sure to have good foods and exercise. I moved away for college and went crazy my first year with eating fast food and gained some weight. Like she said though, your body starts to feel bad and crave better things. When I went back for my second year, I still ate what I wanted but this time wanted better foods. Ate as much as I wanted. Still had fast food at times though my body was a bit sensitive to oil from my previous splurges. Wasn't that great at exercising regularly though because of school work. Lost weight though and for the first time in forever, had family members telling me I looked skinnier rather than chunkier. Still don't believe in diets. It's all how you treat food and yourself.
