  • “A tamalada is a party. It’s a group of people who come together to enjoy making tamales,” according to Dr. Ellen Riojas Clark, the self-appointed Mera Mera Tamalera of San Antonio, Texas, and professor emeritus of Bilingual-Bicultural Studies at UTSA. Her annual Christmas-time tamaladas, going on 50 years now, have been an opportunity to not only gather with friends, family, colleagues, and students to eat, drink, and be merry, but also to engage in a time-honored ritual that often deepens everyone’s sense of cultural awareness and belonging. For Ellen, cooking - especially the collaborative kind - has been a way of reclaiming her own identity as a Mexican American. Watch our latest documentary that celebrates not only the magic of the tamalada, but also Dr. Clark’s legacy in Texas and beyond.

This is beautiful. I’m in tears because whatever your culture is you honor your ancestors and heritage thru cooking food together.

I'm crying. Thank you for that beautiful story. I'm from a family of Texicans where we were raised more anglo because of the racism in our town and missed out on a lot of cultural norms. I yearn for stories like these! Thank you!

Greetings from a proud Chicana in Seattle WA! Thank you so much for blessing us with this story. I have been on a 5 year journey of reclaiming my heritage by learning how to prepare the delicious foods of my ancestors. This year my daughter and I will make our very first batch of tamales. Green chile chicken and chicken our favorite. We are so excited.
