300 dozen tamales made. Sometimes I feel my aunt would make me eat that many at one time.😋

wow, this could be my family at Xmas!! every Mexican American family can relate to this story. for us, we are a family of 5 siblings, 7 grandkids, my parents and this year I have calculated that to make 40 pounds of masa for tamales, me and my Mom spent a total of 23 hours in total from beginning (shopping, prep, etc)...this is from scratch. There is a HUGE difference from buying the masa "prepared". I would never ever trade doing from scratch that is what makes all the difference for us. Mom never measures either but I try to write it down and video it as much because her recipes are to be treasured for generations to come in our family.

Seeing those hands around tamales gives me a sense of what it means to be Mexican, and it also lets me know that Mexicans can be all colors we can be white, black, brown, yellow, or blue!!!!

That's what Latinos call "Family Values." I think it is incredible that those traditions have been passed on from generation to generation for hundreds if not thousands of years. Home made food, not already made and bought or frozen makes family bonds stronger. It also keeps that culture alive. The cubans, Puerto Ricans and Nicaraguans in South Florida do similar gatherings for Christmas as well.

I'm from the northern mountains of New Mexico and my family has been making tamales for many, many generations. It runs deep in our blood, in our culture. I will say our tamales are made a bit differently and look a whole lot better. I'm so thankful for my mother, her mother and mother's mother and so forth. It's traditional to make dozens of tamales for Christmas but we also eat them year round.

Tamales, a great tradition for Christmas Eve! Everyone makes them differently. Ours have to have the perfect ratio of spicy meat to well-flavored Masa dough and they have to be very moist, cooked in spicy broth not steamed. No dried-out ends or bland tasting tamales allowed!

Tamales are a prehispánic food that they use to give when someone died, (funerals?) With the years it became more versatile. This is very popular quick meal when people is hurry going to work or in the weekends; also at the traditional ofrenda de Día de muertos.
