- It's television's version of taking a deep breath...a very long, very slow, deep breath. It's called "Slow TV," and it's a surprise smash-hit in Norway, where millions tune in to watch live, unedited broadcasts of train journeys, ferry boat rides, firewood burning or people knitting for hours or days at a time. As Rune Moklebust, who helped conceive of Slow TV, explains to Seth Doane, the broadcasts simply reflect life: "Much of life itself is boring. But in-between, there are some exciting moments, and you just have to wait for them."

I agree with you . Ever since my wife discovered it while staying in Scotland; we became aficionados of snoocker . What is more fascinating than that wonderful green carpet, the clack of the balls and the thud of the ball in the pocket ? Mostly silence unless that ace, O'Sullivan playing like the Rocket Man he is at full speed .
Snooker is delightful to watch. My mother is a huge fan of O'Sullivan. I just appreciate the mathematics involved in it, and the respect that is required of the audience during a game.

Slow TV should not be thought of as a "TV-show" in the usual sense. Think of it more like a new window in your living room - a window to a place you usually would not have a chance to see.
And i suspect many do not sit down to watch this - but leave it on in the background - while cooking, reading a book, cleaning - watching a little bit now and then - just like a real window.

Hei hei Minnesota! I can imagine people from the old Dakota Territory, or the North-East part of USA, would like this, since there's actually just as many Norwegian-Americans, as there's "Norwegian Norwegians", or ethnic Norwegians. About 4 million in the old world, and 4 million in the new world.

Funny story: I met an American in his 30's last spring in Tokyo, who told me how he and his GF read a news story about one of the broadcasts - think it was the Hurtigruten coastal cruise. They dug around a bit and found a cable channel who had the broadcast, got high and started watching. Best TV we ever saw, was his verdict.
I would love a "slow-TV" from the USA in a train traveling from coast or coast...

But now that i can afford it i dont want to anymore,,, i have seen to many VIDEOS OF COPS BEHAVING BADLY TOWARDS TOURISTS,,, and the bigger citys say detroit have an insane crime rate.......
so i spend many summers now just camping in norway now,, and around each 5 years i take a SLOW CRUISE IN THE CARABIEN,, 2 ORE 4 WEEKS::::: EXPENCIVE BUT ALSO COOL AND QUITE SAFE...

Slow TV is perfect background noise. Sitting alone at home one afternoon and doing whatever, having the television on in the background and letting the seven hour train journey play undisturbed.
YESS! and train journey videos have an almost asmr sound that can sway you to sleep pretty quick😂

It's about being information overloaded and the need to take things slowly, to calm down. Also, there is no underlying agenda in a raw capture of nature.
the train ride from Oslo to Bergen inspired me to do long exposure photography I've gotten pretty good at it too
Recommend watching the boat ride then, its even longer.
That is, if you've got an entire week of watching to spare.

Went for the first time to Norway in February two years ago and fell in love. Am returning next week for a vacation which will include a boat trip from Kirkines to Bergen. I am so thrilled.

In the US we had a version of this for 4 years! It was absolutely crazy watching our country slowly self destruct every day on TV and Twitter!!
Here down in NYC you can watch the highway security camera live footage. But it's not the same and in 240p
There are "live cams" for Bergensbanen here on RUclips I think. I remember watching it when going to sleep some time back (winter one is perfect for that)
There's also similar ones in Austria or Italy I think?
I can not for the life of me remember the names though, I guess just google/search here "Bergensbanen live".

Public television in the 70's used to have shows like this. I remember seeing a train ride through ,Canada coast to coast.
As an American I find it boring at first but then I find it as a stress free therapeutic way of viewing life and see it's beautiful remedies! A way to combat impatience!
As a Norwegian, I know about this and I can say it's mostly old people watching parts of it, or just people having it on in the background, a little like we do with wintersports xD
It's crazy how I watched that same Oslo train ride video years back. The fact that there's a TV channel now for it and various other activities is great!

Pronounced Bærgen, yes.
It's actually quite close to how us norwegians say it. But english speakers need not worry about pronounciation of norwegian words. We don't really care
I don't usually like watching these shows but last year i had lots of anxiety after surgery and couldn't sleep. The train broadcast helped me fall asleep.

I've seen this same train video before in a trance video. I had no idea that it came from this. The knitting is very boring but the train isn't. Fortunately I've had the opportunity to go to Oslo Norway by train in 1990. It is very beautiful. Thanks.
im norwegian and i have never seen any of these shows, except the boat. the one with the boat is really popular, kind of like a summer tradition for many norwegians
but from the video you make it seem like this is everything on the TV in Norway, while it isnt. this is special here too. it only 1 tv channel, and most of the time there are normal shows on that channel as well.
Man burde ikke skrive sitt fulle navn på internett they do say in the video that these types of shows are special events are in Norway.
He does say in the video that it's on NRK2 and it's extremely successful, and it's not on all the time. I've only seen a show dedicated to the Sami people herding reindeer, and yes, it was extremely boring and I didn't bother to change the channel for some reason.

I think it’s so sweet , pure and simple that these people genuinely enjoy this. I could definitely get into this, I probably wouldn’t grab some popcorn, sit down and be hyped about it, but I’d definitely put it on while I’m cooking, cleaning, using it as background noise and video. I like it ! Norway seems like such a nice beautiful place to live with good people.
This would totally work in the US as we have so much geographic distance between various regions and curiosity about the land and its people. There is a certain demographic of viewer who longs for what is natural, real and beautiful. Many of us who watch CBS Sunday Morning fit that demographic. Those of us who value the diversity, who view our land as our greatest resource, and who love people for the very sake of curiosity about one another would love to see humanity in its natural habitat, not the one presented by marketers and those who exist in a state of acquisition and competition.

We literally had a slow tv programme broadcasting the overcooking of a grandiosa pizza once. It was pretty lit.
Sooo cool! I wonder if they would just upload their slow TV segments to youtube. I watch several TV series while I work crossword puzzles. I like the story-lines and characters of the shows, but they don't always need full eyes-on-the-tube concentration.
And it's always nice to get to peep into the lives of folks (and boats, trains, knitting circles, and fishers) from far-away places.
NRK, being state-owned, makes a lot of their works available for everyone in the world at their website.

I love that last one. It's very relaxing to watch that fisherman, and his dialect is very soothing. But off course, it's all in Norwegian.
Most programs on nrk.no aren't availible to watch from other countries. But I think all of these are. I have my VPN set on London to watch BBC for free, and I could still watch all of these, so I think it's fine.

I've watched burning fire by the creek on YT for hours once. It gave me a sense of piece and relaxation. Remember national geographic channel how it used to show animals for hours with occasional narration. You just can't have candy all the time, or you will end up with diabetes! Eat your veggies! (Metaphorically speaking)

We used to have a program on public access here in Madison, WI on WYOU. It was called Cooking with Bob. Bob would put something on a grill and you could watch slowly burn until it was charcoal. Great to watch in the Winter in front of space heater.
I really like watching stuff like that. It's soothing and when else am I going to take a train journey like that?

That's the benefit of NRK being funded by a TV-owners-license, they don't have to worry about commercial viability and thus get to try out a lot of things

mossum81 I have to agree. I'm American. I can hear some say 'this is stupid, why are they wasting money on this stupid show!' Change the channel, then canceled.

As a Norwegian I can say that we're not all big fans of this. The programming itself is fair enough, fun experiment. But the channel NRK is funded by what we call a "TV license" that we have to pay twice a year regardless of if we actually watch that channel or not. This causes some problems, like that screens without a receiver for TV signals becomes very difficult to come by and much more expensive than they need to be. Everyone here has some older person buy their TV to avoid the license hassle, or just refuse to pay it since they have no actual way of enforcing it since they have no way to tell if you have a TV or not. People just say they use computers instead, that the TV broke, whatever, it's not like they can search your house anyway. So now they want to change it and make it like in the UK where everyone regardless of if they have a TV or not pay for it, and to sell that policy they say that only people over a certain age will have to pay so that young people won't get affected (but we know this is most likely a lie and that will change just a few years after they pass it). Now if this was BBC and I was paying for say Doctor Who, I'd go along with it, but considering what NRK produces, I and many others have no interest in watching it or paying for it, especially not programming that is the same god dammed thing I see out the window.

I, as a Norwegian, would call it "Background TV". This isn't something you sit down in the sofa and watch for many hours. It's more like a program that you put on to have something in the background while you have guests or something, and check in on the TV for a minute or two before you return to the guests. We also have the world's best chess player and the matches tend to go for many, many hours. It's nice having it on in the background. Yes, we are a strange country, and no, Kvikklunsj is NOT Kit Kat.
I could see it like that. As a kid, I used to leave the TV on a news/text channel and have that run for a while.

Hmm I'm pretty sure a local station in Denmark, TV Syd, showed slow TV in the 2000s of train rides.
They were not meant as the broadcasting as such, but were showed in the hours leading up to the broadcasting.
I remember a few times by accident zapping to these channels and watched it a few times of maybe half an hour.
It's such a strange feeling cause you get mesmerized into just just staring onto the screen. It's soul healing.
I would totally watch a train journey. I loved "Great Railway Journeys" too.
I live in Norway. One of the program was abouth to learn to make a steak we eat at christmas. They used camera in the oven. Slow tv in many ours. Hurtigruten got many more passenger after the program. When I am in Bergen I always see Hurtigruten beautifull boaths. Have a wonderfull day everyone frome beautifull Norway.
I remember standing at the docks as the ship arrived in my city, hoping to be on TV, almost ten years ago now. Those were good times, indeed. Didn't have the patience to watch a lot of it, though.
we also have something called "laksen live" which is a live broadcast that uses 4 underwater cameras filming salmon during the spring or something

There's tons of these train videos on RUclips and I watch them all the time - nothing unique about Norway doing it, except for the scenery, of course! But I've been watching these for years - they're a lot of fun.
And also the fact that 1/4th of the population watched it, and the fact that it was on national television

One should add that the part when the purser sang in the harbour happened in the middle of the night. I think it was like 2 or 3 o'clock.

I could see this taking off, sometimes the TV is on just for background noise while we read or play a game, having this would mean people would pay little attention to it unless something happens.
This isn't about exciting or boring, it's relaxing, nothing like it on TV and even in life.
A good show to watch where you can watch and do nothing, relax and go through your thoughts.

Wow this is late. As a Norwegian i can tell you we have had this for a number of years already. Never been a big fan of it myself, but my parents are. I do see the appeal though as it sets a different pace from most other tv shows.

I have to admit that when I first watched Moments of Nature, I thought of Norway's slow TV. Take the Norwegian directors' advice: Make it longer, especially the ones you post on your Facebook page.👌
This is the polar opposite of "Fast TV" as TV in the US usually is. It is an entirely new perspective of life as it really is.
