  • In the new season of podcasts Mo Rocca looks back at one of the most beloved entertainers of his era: singer-songwriter John Denver (who died 25 years ago this week), whose utterly sincere songs about Colorado and nature made him one of the biggest stars of the 1970s. Rocca visits Aspen, Colorado to meet John's first wife Annie Denver, and close friend Tom Crum, to learn more about the man behind the music. In the early 70's I worked at a major Hotel where John Denver and Frank Sinatra performed. John asked if the employees were going to see the once in a lifetime show.He said we will play a special show for them because he saw how much the employee worked behind the scenes for them..and they did for free.A line of first come first serve with an orchestra. It was a special event one I will not forget. You could tell he was a real caring person and he was a great entertainer. May he rest in place 🙏.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's a John Denver fan. I had a girlfriend in HS in the early 90's who would roll her eyes when I would play his music. I broke up with her. One of my life's great regrets is passing up the opportunity to see John Denver in concert. He was dead soon after that concert. My wife and I had Annie's Song as our wedding song... still going strong almost 23 years later. Thanks to John Denver for some truly wonderful music.

I got to see John several times. I was a preteen the first time. I cried. I had absolutely no control over it. He was larger than life in that moment and I was overwhelmed by emotion. I still remember that concert like it was yesterday. I was secretly jealous of Annie and definately planned on being her replacement ... as soon as I got out of Jr high. lol.
I cried all the way through this video. I miss John so much.
You only lost one girlfriend because she dissed John? I got dissed so much I became immune. As a matter of fact I still feel sorry for people that don't get John's music / message. If not for his music I wouldn't have survived my childhood.

While Denver’s mellow music made many believe he was equally easygoing in real life, a story about their breakup shows how he could have a bad temper. Back in the late eighties, he came to Mexico City to sing at a Rotary Club convention. My daughter was part of his “back-up” chorus as she attended a local bilingual school and her music teacher was asked to get some kids together for the opening ceremony. The theme was ecology, so he performed a song he wrote for the event, and then included Annie’s Song.We all got to meet him backstage where he was upbeat, kind and funny. His bags got lost in transit, so he made light of the situation and wore a beautiful, multi-colored jacket he had travelled in. It is a treasured memory. When he broke into Annie’s Song, my heart soared.

Before "Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High" would help his solo career take off, Denver had written a song originally titled "Babe, I Hate To Go". It was brought to the attention of the popular folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary. They would take the song, retitled as "Leaving On A Jet Plane", all the way to No. One on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart.

Peter, Paul, and Mary also recorded For Baby (For Bobbie) in 1966. I read the song was originally written about a former girlfriend named Bobbie. Mary Travers had just given birth to her daughter and suggested changing the meaning of the song to a mother who would do anything for her child, hence the revised song title For Baby (For Bobbie)

I always loved John Denver, growing up in Colorado. I remember at some point he fell out of vogue to like his music, but I always liked him and people made fun of me. I remember being mad after he died and all his "fans" came out of the closet and paid tribute to him. I'm sure he would have appreciated them more if they could have said those nice things while he was still alive.

My favorite John Denver songs not mentioned here are "I'm Sorry" (another song about Annie) and "Perhaps Love." These beautiful, soaring pieces round out that "country boy" side of this talented musician.

Don't hate me but as someone who grew up overseas I've never cared for "country" music.
On a road trip in college with no MP3 players or streaming music my friends and I pulled in a Colorado station once we hit the state line and we heard a lot of John Denver.
To this day if a song comes on I just have to pause and sing along. What a beautiful lyricist and musician!

😭😭😭. My husband who was from CO where we were often surprised me taking me to his last public concert in Dallas at the Majestic. We cried together when he died. Now he’s gone too soon as well. My brother, who i also attended an early concert with in FW, played and sang a medley of our favorites at his funeral. John’s compelling, brilliantly beautiful and evocative voice music poetry and spirit still move me so deeply -such intense memories i can hardly bear it. “ Yesterday i had a dream about dying, about laying to rest and then flying, how the moment at hand is the only thing we really own. And i lay in my bed and i wonder, after all has been said and is done for. Why is thus we are here and so soon we are gone” JD ❤️✌🏼🙏🏼🕉

Honestly, it seems more like 55 years ago.
Someone played a soundbite of Amy Winehouse describing how she longed for the old music that celebrated love, as opposed to the “F U” music we now have. Today it’s hard to believe that there was once an era that was filled with hit love songs.

I can remember going to see him in Roanoke, VA in the summer of '76, even though I was only three years old. I absolutely loved watching him on TV and was always bugging my dad to play his records for me. My teenaged cousin won tickets way up close to the stage and invited me and my mom and dad because he knew how much I loved him. It was like a dream.

Once John passed he knew what he did for your Aunt & everyone who loved his music, including myself. I only saw him in concert once in the 90's & cried thru most of it as i used his music in 1979 to survive my 4 yr old daughters death, he also helped me get sober & find a new place to live in Wyoming near Yellowstone. Met my husband hear & have been married going on 42 yrs, after having met on a blind date. John D. is enjoyed by both my husband John & myself.

I had an uncle-in-law that spent his last years mostly alone but not lonely. He was once a contractor on the gulf coast, highly skilled craftsmen, etc. I visited him often in the evenings before he passed and most often, he would be listening to John Denver albums on his record player while drinking beer. We barely knew one another while I was growing up but when I moved closer to his location in my 30's we spent considerable time together, good times.
