  • Friday the 13th is a 2009 American slasher film directed by Marcus Nispel and written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. It is a reboot of the Friday the 13th film series, which began in 1980 and the twelfth Friday the 13th film in total. Nispel also directed the 2003 remake of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), while Shannon and Swift wrote the screenplay for the 2003 crossover Freddy vs. Jason. Friday the 13th follows Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki) as he searches for his missing sister, Whitney (Amanda Righetti), who while camping in the woods at Crystal Lake is taken by Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears).
The concept for the 2009 film originally started as an origin story, but the film evolved into a reimagining of the first four Friday the 13th films. Along with bringing the film back to its tonal roots, Jason was designed as a leaner and faster killer, with a backstory that could provide a little sympathy for the character, but not enough that he would lose his menace. Although this film reboots the continuity, Jason's iconic hockey mask, which was not introduced until the third film in the series, is acquired through the progression of the film. In keeping with the tone of the film, Jason's mask was also brought back to its roots, created from a mold of the original mask used for Part III; though there were subtle changes. Friday the 13th incorporated some of Harry Manfredini's music score from the original Friday the 13th film series, as the producers recognized its iconic status.
The film was released on Friday, February 13, 2009, to the most theaters of any of the Friday the 13th films. Although the film was met with primarily negative reviews, it earned approximately $19 million on its opening night and $40 million for its opening weekend. With its opening weekend, Friday the 13th broke two records, having the largest opening day for the film series and the largest opening weekend for any horror film. It is currently the second-highest grossing film in the Friday the 13th franchise with $65 million, and has earned over $91.3 million worldwide.

Nice job with the review of one of the better remakes/reboots of a popular well known horror franchise. I thought it had some nice gritty direction, the script was pretty solid, the characters other than a few exceptions were effective enough, and Derek Mears was a great Jason. It's a damn shame we didn't get a sequel. It was a good time at the movies and a nice new take on the franchise.

This is probably the best remake, in my opinion, of a famous slasher film. It's better than Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, Psycho etc. In fact, I tie this with the TCM remake.

I think this does what all good remake should do stays true to what the original is yet slightly tweets to character so the character still feels familiar but now there is more to the character

    good review matt
this is definatley the best remake hollywood's done in the past few years.
the darkness in certain scenes and the pacing didn't really bother me. I do agree with you that the very last shot of the movie sucked.
Aaron Yu did do a very great job in his role

    Pretty underrated.
    Derek Mears is awesome.
The opening is one of, if not my favorite of the series.
Some fans hate it, but I really like the Whitney subplot.
Chewie's kill is one of the very best of this series, imo.
Next to Part V, the most in your face nudity of the series. Craziest sex scene, too.
I love the whole "Jason trying to draw them out of the cabin" sequence.

I agree. This remake is incredibly underrated, as great as it is...it should've spawned sequels, but here we are over 10 years later and still no sequel. The most frightening portrayal of Jason in a while, how they went from this to the Nightmare remake a year later...I will NEVER UNDERSTAND.

i thought the idea was very interesting. combineing 1 threw 4 films and extending off of those plots really entertain me. i admire marcus nispels vision, him directing alternative music videos i feel set the tone for his style which you also see in the texas chainsaw remake. not worth disecting but more just enjoyable and reminds me of slasher films from the golden age of horror for my dime of the 1980s.out of the nightmare, bloodly valinetine, halloween, etc remakes, this is by far the definitive number 1 in my opinion.

I like this movie but i think the opening death scene with the guy finding the weed was way too weak for the first kill.the first kill should have been brutal and gory,it would have set a better tone from that point forward.

@RamboRaph4life I think u hit it on the money when u said it was a mix of 1-4 ! Now i think this is way better than the Freddy remake , didnt know the guys from Freddy and Jason worked on this too. Now I thought Freddy vs Jason had way more blood and gore and better kills tho, I have to say that I enjoyed that Jason more in some ways.

I'm a huge Friday the 13th fan. And a huge horror/slasher fan in general. And I think this film was great. Really enjoyed it! Kills were awesome. I liked the underground idea. Jason was brutal. Was just a sick remake/reboot. And I don't get why people knock on the nightmare on elm street remake. I thought it was awesome. Yea..it wasn't Robert. And it's hard to picture NOES with a different Freddy. But Robert is old. But I think the remake is awesome and the back story of Freddy was a good idea.

If you just want to see Jason kill some new blood then you'll like this film. I'm a huge fan of the series and I can say the movies biggest drawback and plus is that it doesn't do anything to different. Really cool kills but just not crazy over the top which is fine nothing too campy. (No pun intended) Derek did a great job as Jason. And the explanation on how Jason got around Camp Crystal Lake was pretty rad. Only real issue is the characters could've been more interesting compared to the originals it's the worst/least interesting group but that's not to say that the actors were bad. It's just the characters were too stereotypical kinda making fun of the slasher concept but even still you loved the characters in the originals because they were relatable. Not to say these characters aren't relatable but yeah just a bit too stereotype. Everything else however I thought it was a fantastic reboot/remake I do hope that the new one doesn't flop. Kinda weird it's going to be a found footage film as well but if done right it could be really great. Just gotta keep fingers crossed

I think this is the best entry in the series and the best slasher remake. It benefits from improving on a series that was always mediocre-to-terrible. If we must have remakes, remake that which could have been better and spare the soiling of success.

It has WWE's Kane in both, he plays the killer Jacob Goodnight and the second one has Danielle Harris. You should definitely check them out, especially the second one. :)

    Remakes I love:
Texas chainsaw massacre: the beginning (2006)
    Texas chainsaw massacre (2003)
    Friday the 13th (2009)
    Halloween (2007) I like but I don't love
Nightmare on elm street (2010) is ok
BUUUTTT Halloween 2 (2009) is the crack cocain of movies
    But that's just me

Personally, I liked but didn't love Zombie's first remake because even though I don't need a Halloween remake and Michael's ordinary serial killer backstory is cliched I found the child actor playing Michael entertaining and the characters and kills were entertaining. While I don't need a humanized Michael or want it I still found Zombie did a great job at doing it and the movie felt like Michael's story which entertained me. I hated Zombies Halloween 2 the script had some good ideas but was piss poor executed and the besides the visuals the movie had nothing to offer. I hated the Elm Street remake and I didn't like this Friday remake either they tried too hard to humanize Jason with underground tunnels and such and Jason himself didn't really feel like Jason he felt more like some random survivalist serial killer. I appreciate that they tried to make it darker but the ending was just lazy and overall it felt like a Friday film made for a more modern post-torture porn Horror industry. The thing is I don't feel Friday the 13th needs updating the majority of audiences like Friday as it is you don't really need to evolve it to fit modern sensibilities of Horror I don't think by trying to overly humanize Jason. I don't mind the film taking itself seriously or trying to make Jason scary the problem for me though is in trying to do it they tried to hard. They humanized Jason way to much for me with silly tunnels and making him closer to Rambo then Jason.

@RamboRaph4life But I like the way Jason was portrayed in this as a 7ft Juggernaut thats non stop and more of a Hunter in this film , with bowing arrows and the bear trap. Now I enjoyed the Texas Chainsaw Remake and the Prequel. As far as Holloween Remake goes Like u said i see what Rob Zombie was trying to do, make Michael way more aggressive and muderous with his kills , I got that part and liked it,but the bad still outweighs the good , especially with the character (s) development

I felt the makers of this film made the REBOOT they wanted I would've loved seen a sequel I didn't mind the traps after all Jason did that trap in Friday the 13th part 2 with the guy hanging upside down.Derek Mears really did his homework i love in the interviews he said he study Ted White and the way he carried himself was based on John Rambo SWEET LOL! I do enjoy Jared too in this film I hope they could bring him back for the sequel if it happens?

the problem with this movie is they cut too many corners to make this movie... ok why not redo the origin story so the kids from this era ( who haven't seen the movie ) can understand the reason why he went nuts. instead you have a bunch of movies rolled into one, which hurried this movie too much ....
Original is still the best ... this wasn't horrible just too rushed to make a good remake but instead it seemed rushed and didn't pay alot of respect toward the original

I think you would agree ramboralph4life that is so damn assinine and lame for horror movies to have the hero or heroes win then the predictable moronic idiotic dumb ending of the villain returns in the ending.
Either have a happy ending or have a sad somber ending but quit for crying out loud trying to have a cake and eat it to with it appears the villain lost only for him or her in the final scene.
Highly unoriginal, lame and very assinine.

Friday 13th (2009): All déjà vu.. I guess they've come to the end of their ressources and creativity with the long-running series.
Too predictable..We all konw what's going to happen...beforehand.
Jason kills them all and never misses target as usual. To the far-fetched and too contrived point..
Almost not plausible and unreal. Not close enough to reality in fact.
Yes, a let-down and almost boring..

I've seen a lot of your rviews and I have to say that I agree with almost them all, but yes, Derek Mears was ok, the killings, in my opinion, nothing very special (there's much more extreme and better out there nowadays) The story is very stupid and quite boring and worst at all, the most of the characters seems much more stupid and definitely not enjoyable compared to the classic movie ones... Ok, they are right in for the bodycount but I think that there's a difference between real people (also with the stupid ones) and the extremely idiotic ones featured in this film
