- Freddy vs. Jason is a 2003 American slasher film directed by Ronny Yu. The film is a crossover between the A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises.
It is the eighth and eleventh entries in their respective series, pitting Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees against each other. The film is also the final one in each franchise, excluding the 2009 and 2010 remakes.
In the film, Freddy (Robert Englund) has grown incapable of haunting people's dreams, as the citizens of fictional Springwood, Ohio have mostly forgotten about Freddy with the passage of time.
In order to regain his power, Freddy resurrects Jason (Ken Kirzinger) and manipulates him into traveling to Springwood to cause panic and fear, leading to rumors that Freddy has returned. However, while Jason succeeds in causing enough fear for Freddy to haunt the town again, Jason angers Freddy by killing Krueger's potential victims. This ultimately sends the two monsters into a violent conflict.
This film marked Robert Englund's final appearance to date as Freddy Krueger, having portrayed him in all seven previous Nightmare films and the 1980s TV series, as well as the first movie since Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives not to feature Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees.
This is also Ken Kirzinger's second and final appearance as Jason; having doubled for Hodder in the film Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. This film introduces Grammy-winning R&B singer Kelly Rowland.

Good review Matt. I used to love this film. But over the years, I have actually grown to hate this movie! After digging into the behind-the-scenes story, New Line went about this movie all wrong. First off, New Line treated Kane Hodder like absolute shit by leading him on thinking that he would play as Jason and then kick him to the curb. Then of course, New Line got a lot of hate mail for it. So what do they do? They point the finger at the director by saying it was his call, and apparently they even attempted to put some blame on Kane Hodder by saying he was acting for too much money...bunch of lying pricks! The acting was absolutely atrocious! And they also hired the director, Ronny Yu, for all the wrong reason! Ronny even admitted that he never saw all the nightmare or friday films, but they were so dead set to hire the guy! New Line fucked up big time with the making of this film.

The reason they invented the Jason afraid of drowning thing is that without it there wouldn't be anything for Freddy to have over Jason. They knew logically in the real world Jason would win the fight because of his durability so they wanted to give Freddy something over Jason so it would seem like he at least had some sort of chance to beat Jason.
They still had Freddy being equal to Jason in the real world (gouging his eyes out, giving WWE elbow drops and kicks to the chest, etc.) so it just made Jason weaker in Both the dream and real worlds.
@@ramboraph4life I agree they let Freddy get more hits in, but I also think that was partial because Jason is so much stronger once Jason got a hold of him he tore his arm off in one move. I think right off the bat Freddy vs Jason is a flawed concept because looking at the Freddy from the Nightmare movies and looking at Jason from the Jason movies once Freddy enters the real world realistically Jason should have killed him in like few minutes to be honest because he always goes for automatic death blows. In my opinion, Freddy vs Jason is already a flawed concept because outside the dream world, Jason should be able to kill Freddy in just a few minutes. I think part of the reason it seems Freddy does so well is that watching the movies in both franchises, you never expect Freddy to do as well as he did in the real world. What they did was on purpose create a version of Jason for the movie that would move slower so that Freddy would have more of a realistic chance at winning in reality. I also think the studio knew a Freddy vs Jason movie would be more mainstream based on the idea of the film, so they set it up to have Freddy as the villain and Jason as the anti-hero I think they wanted you to root for Jason over Freddy because of him being more sympathetic. I do agree with you though, Freddy was given super ninja fighting skills he never had just so he could have a chance in the real world like Freddy doing elbow drops lol. You aren't wrong they did on purpose amp up Freddy in the real world, so he would be able to stand a realistic chance at beating Jason if this had been standard Freddy from his movies and Jason from his then Jason would have killed him in only a few minutes, I still think Jason does win the fight in the movie, but they tried to make Freddy look like the cooler of the 2 fighting wise with all the big moves. Freddy is a better character than Jason, but realistically Jason should have destroyed him in reality.
In your ideal Freddy vs. Jason would you like the idea that all the main characters/kids get killed by the climax and it just comes down to Freddy and Jason with no one left to get in their way to clash with each other. What did you think of the ending? Again if you were doing it, would you have one beat/kill the other, if so who would you have win and why?
maybe it would of been a different turnout if it was not zombie jason what if freddy was fighting more human jason from either part lets say 3 or 4

The more people say...10 years ago or how ever long as the years go by..I still feel like it just came out..because I was in kindergarten when this came out and I regret not being a horror child. X_x

I'm also a leatherface guy because the first horror movie I ever saw was the original Texas chainsaw massacre 1974 cinematic horror classic, so I very fond of Thomas "leatherface" Hewitt, because he was the first horror film icon ,super anti hero villain, I was exposed to growing up . But then I found and watched all of the NONES films, franchise freddy became my firm favourite,NO1 , then, one then with Thomas "leatherface" Hewitt, a close second in behind, character s, film, franchise favourites wise.So how about a Freddy Vs Jason part 2 featuring vs Ash, Vs Micheal Myers, Vs Thomas "leatherface" Hewitt,in an avengers, justice league style supermashup, super battle with all the horror film icons involved somehow In a superbattle, supermashup, Vs battle storyline film, script, storyline,horror version franchise of the avengers, suicide squad, justice league, where they team up to take on even more worse super villains more than powerful than them as anti hero's,like the suicide squad, justice league, or the avengers, films, franchises, or vs each other in really epic , awesome, really great good, fantastic, brilliant, supermashup vs each other opponents style fighting combat wise, in superbattles like streets of rage , the street fighter, or mortal kombat, video game franchises.style pal..Hey hell maybe involve chucky, candyman, hellraiser, pinhead,hatchet, kanes 2 see no evil evil film characters Super villain anti hero Jacob Goodknight somehow as well perhaps maybe even as well pal.

Great review Matt i liked this film because it was Freddy and Jason.But for most part it should had more kills for Freddy. Jason is ok but Freddy is my horror hero i felt he was not givin more to do and wish they would had done better with Robert Englunds roll. But besides that it was still cool to watch it thanks for reviewing this movie again.
Aw, man, I'm a little sad about what you said about Monica Keena because I've seen her in another horror movie called Left in Darkness and she had one of the most honest performances I've seen in a horror movie. She was great in Left in Darkness and I haven't seen Freddy vs. Jason in years so I couldn't compare the roles, but yeah, check out Left in Darkness if you can. It's a horror movie that DOESN'T have a downer ending. I know you hate those. The ending is pretty bittersweet.

I loved this movie when it first came out, but I've gotten to become more hit and miss on it now over the years now that I know more of the backstory behind it with New Line fucking Kane Hodder over saying it was Ronny Yu's call, and then even hiring him because of some dumb Asian ghost story movie he did and also because he had done Bride Of Chucky, which granted, I like Bride Of Chucky, but they should have gotten a director who was a fan of both franchises like the writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift were! Also with so many of the script ideas they had, it's like wow! I'm glad they went the direction they did, but I think they could have gotten a better director, and New Line was a MAJOR studio by this time,they should have forked out the cash to pay Kane Hodder to play the role since they led him on up until MONTHS before they started filming! I do have issues with some of the cast as well. Monica Keena is nice to look at, but they made her too pouty and just focused on her a lot of the time, Jason Ritter was always smiling like you said, and I noticed that too! Some of the other cast were ok, but not even able to hold a candle to ANYONE in the Nightmare or Friday franchises put together! Kelly Rowland I did like cause at the time this movie came out, I did have a crush on her, but she's not even a very good actress. The only part with her I liked is where she was talking shit to Freddy and Jason just takes her out with one swipe of his machete! The rest of the cast I just didn't care for! Katharine Isabelle is another one who's nice to look at, but can't act worth a damn! The geeky character they got was only big at the time cause he was on a Lifetime TV show, the lead cop they had helping them was just like "Durr!" to me, like he had this look on his face like he was completely stoned out of his gourd for the whole movie! I did like the Hypnocil angle and them using the Westin Hills Institution again as kind of an homage to Part 3. But in my book, they just made Jason into too much of a pussy! And I'm a fan of both franchises! Even like you were pointing out, at the end, Freddy cuts Jason's fingers off, gouges his eyes out, and then proceeds to whack the hell out of him with his OWN machete!!!

Epic review bro for I enjoy as a stand alone film because I feel they should've got a director from either ANOES or F13TH films to make it more scarey and to handle Jason better IMO!

I actually enjoyed this movie.
+ ramboraph4life Monica Keena was annoying, but nice to look at, so to speak. Kelly Rowland was also nice to look at and even more annoying. Didn't give 2 shits about Jason Ritter and the rest of the cast, except for Brendan Fletcher, who in my point of view, was the most likeable character. Most of all, Robert Englund was awesome as always. Kane Hodder getting dropped was the movie's biggest let down. Shame on New Line
Fletcher was very likeable. I would’ve loved to see a film based on his own character to see what he went through before his brother committed suicide.
You're absolutely right, good Freddy movie but worst Jason Film EVER... Even poor Roy Burns from New Beginning was much more Jason than the one in this movie... This movie should be called Freddy Vs Frakenstein's Monster retarded cousin :(

If it wasn't for the construction site at Crystal Lake Jason would have kicked Freddy's ass much more. Without all the tools around Freddy wouldn't have been able to do shit to Jason.
Right Freddy needed his Energy from the kids Screams to get stronger so that's why he disguised himself as momma Vorheez & called out for Jason's name to kill for him also dat Ending meant it was a draw wow the fight scenes wit Jason n Freddy were on point lol the only thing I did not like was the Cast of Teenagers but that funny scene wit Kelly Rowland 's character was roasting Freddy him smilling when Jason was behind her was great
It definitely was more of a Freddy movie than a Jason movie. You could see and feel a lot of disrespect towards Jason in this movie. Bad story continuity with Jason being afraid of water. I think this movie was more in the guilty pleasure department because you know how they disrespected Jason in this movie but you still appreciate a lot of other stuff in this movie. I was more of a Jason fan than a Freddy fan.
Just some brainstorming ideas pal their to carry on the freddy Vs Jason franchise films, scripts, storylines their pal.The other ideas the scriptwriters,storyline writers, came up with their creative brains, juices currently flowing,were actually alot better than the film they actually made, did put out their for people, to see pal.

Erica Maldonado They did. John Carpenter met with Sean Cunningham and William Shatner on that. They couldn't come to an agreement on it. Unfortunately. I think it would've been amazing. I had a good idea on it that I think would've been a simple story

Great movie has some flaws Jason scared of Freddy yeah right and Freddy gets 1 kill some of the cast was annoying but it’s fun we get a dark Freddy I wish Kane hodder was Jason but it’s fun

great review Matt, i too like this film for certain bits like the dark comedy as far as Freddy is concerned and the fight between him and Jason, but I didn't really notice how much Freddy actually kicked Jason's ass all over the place before you mentioned it even in the real world (which even when I first saw this movie thought jason would have the greatest advantage). also i think your idea of Jason being the one person who has no nightmares would've made it better.
