My favourite aspect of Twilight Princess is that EVERY SINGLE dungeon item made me say "This is the coolest item ever!" until I saw the next one and said the same thing again. And I meant it every time.

      @MumboJ 9 месяцев назад +8

@a2 True, my comment was about the initial feeling of first getting the item, but you are right in that the item's usefulness does wear off quickly after leaving the dungeon.
There are still a few occasional uses, but it would be nice if there were more.
Making Spinner move faster than running (but slower than Epona) would make it useful almost anywhere, plus it would be super fun to just beyblade around for the rest of the game.
Clawshot would be more useful if more things were valid targets, like how the OoT Hookshot can target almost anything made of wood. So even if you're not solving a puzzle you can still use it to get around by making shortcuts and such.
Ball and Chain is already a really effective weapon against many enemies, I don't think it needs a buff.
Hero's Bow doesn't need a buff, it's the best ranged weapon in the game.
Gale Boomerang doesn't need a buff, it's the best boomerang of ANY zelda game.
Dominion Rod is basically only used to solve puzzles, although it does solve a LOT of puzzles. I'm not sure if people even want to use it again after all the Owl Statues.
If it was to have an additional use, then maybe it could be used to control enemies somehow?
Either directly like in Mario Odyssey, or indirectly like the TotK Muddle Bud effect.

Another thing about the items, it feels super lacking only having four in BotW/TotK. Sure, they might have a lot of uses, but that's not always the point. There was something special about the little niche tools you pick up in the classic games. There might not be a whole lot of statues to use the dominion rod on, or a whole lot of tracks to ride on the spinner, but that made them feel special. It made the things that used them feel unique. With the slate/ultrahand abilities everything ends up feeling incredibly samey with no progression whatsoever after the first hour of the game.

Current Zelda left J.R.R.Tolkien behind, therefore the most Tolkien-inspired Zelda (Twilight Princess) has the most of what BOTW/TOTK now lacks. It's as simple as that. Zelda used to be very Tolkien, but in recent years the mainline series has literally just been aping Princess Mononoke while awkwardly trying to keep the original Tolkien-esque world around. The massive plot emphasis put on the Shiekah (nippon ninjas) and their comically advanced technology beginning with BOTW was a HUGE hint to the direction the new creators were steering the ship. The series is no longer a unique and well-balanced combination of East and West, but totally Ghibli with a Zelda skin on top.

i feel like an insane person whenever people praise botw/totk because "it's just like princess mononoke!" because to me, the thinly-veiled references to ghibli films in these two games have always felt kind of... cheap? it would be one thing if these games were inspired by ghibli on a deeper, thematic level- eg, princess mononoke's themes of nature vs industrialization could have been a great foundation on which to craft a zelda game. but what it feels like instead is that someone in marketing had the brilliant realization that many adult-aged zelda fans are also ghibli fans, so if you throw them a ghibli reference, they'll go "oh yay, i love hayao miyazaki!" the only purpose seems to be to remind you of a different thing, and hope the positive associations from that thing carry over to the game you're currently playing. just a total lack of substance

I'm actually not that surprised. The Triforce has been fading out of Zelda pretty gradually for more than a decade now. Like I said in the video, Skyward Sword totally forgot about it until the end and then just shoved it haphazardly into the plot.
The moment that they retconned the three Goddesses of Hyrule into virtual nonexistence and focused more on "Hylia" (who doesn't seem to be the goddess _of_ anything as far as I can tell), the eventual abandonment of the Triforce as a plot point was probably inevitable.

More like deliberately ignored. In previous games the Triforce had some metaphorical or symbolic significance as a combination of the three attributes of Power, Courage and Wisdom. In Skyward Sword it becomes a vaguely powerful MacGuffin that Demise just wants and Hylia hides inside Skyloft.
No symbolism there, and no real relevance to a plot that's almost 100% about Zelda being a goddess reincarnate and upgrading the Master Sword. This was a lazy token inclusion of the Triforce, and I'm not surprised that Fujibayashi didn't even bother to keep it around in his two most recent games. He has no flair for using it to tell a story.

"Over reacting to anything said about Zelda" Nintendo lost money on a game because the western fans didn't want Toon Link, they wanted what was presented at space world 2000 and instead got Windwaker 3 years later, so Twilight Princess is the way it is because of that space world 2000 LOZ teaser trailer.

As for the tone shifts that's probably to try and make the series seem fresh in new ways given it is somewhat the same story each time, big bad shows up in some form, threatens princess and hyrule, and it's up to Link to thwart those evil ambitions, that core formula for the games hasn't changed much in all this time, with some exceptions.

Its taken me years, but I've learned to love Zant for that exact reason! He is a man child! Zant turning out to be such a joke of a man really highlights TP's themes of maturity.
For a long time I hated that such a cool, scary, and imposing villain turned out to be a total joke. But that fits. He's not the ruler _because_ he's a childish loser who never matured. Midna, by contrast, grows and matures. When she fails, she accepts that it might be her fault and works to fix it. Zant just throws a temper tantrum when things don't go his way!
They're both selfish at the start of the story and blame others for their woes. Their choice to either double down on the behavior or not is such a good story element. Zant is the perfect contrast to Midna.

I honestly had hoped that Tears of the Kingdom would have taken from Twilight Princess. I had thought that the hand that Link gets would be a companion, housing a spirit or something that would lead/give story elements throughout the game.
Frankly, I had thought that the corruption that nearly killed Link would be a 'link' between him and Ganondorf and we'd hear Ganondorfs thoughts on different locations as well as motivations throughout the game.
I had hoped temples would be added to the environment that were larger than what we got and that we'd be able to explore them for lore and a reward.
Honestly, I don't see why we can't get items in dungeons anymore. Can you imagine getting a Hookshot that would help navigate the terrain better? They could have given us unbreakable weapons that have a recharge time like the Master Sword or need upgrading to be at full power and have lore tied to them. Just SOMETHING to make me want to explore and be rewarded for it. Instead of just randomly having chests in the depths with clothes in it, have temples we'd have to go through to get the clothing of past heroes as well as a weapon/shield they used.
They could still have the 4 items at the start of the game giving you access to everywhere, but it'd be so much more if there were items hidden in temples that opened up exploration even more or were weaknesses to certain enemy types.
Have the Light Arrows be available to get to help with the battle against Ganondorf, but lock them away in the temple in the sky that's difficult to get to.
It's so frustrating to see there are ways to still stay true to the original Zelda formula for older fans to enjoy that they just ignore.

For the story elements of what you're talking about here, I think you're taking a greater interest in the story as a linchpin of the game's design than Nintendo does. Nintendo these days is not that interested in telling stories, and the stories of most of their main-series games are deemphasized in favor of the gameplay. Your ideas are pretty interesting, but they would require Nintendo to spend more time on the story, and draw more attention to it, than I think they want to.
As for the more gameplay-related stuff, Nintendo is clearly very committed to the sandbox design approach, which means they can't put items in dungeons because that would limit the player's exploration until they finished those dungeons; sandboxes are supposed to be totally free and open from the beginning or at least very early on. I don't think the sandbox approach is actually a good fit for the Zelda franchise, but it's what they wanted with Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom really is just a sequel to Breath of the Wild at the end of the day, with all the same fundamental design elements.
Here's hoping they do some of these things next time.

I haven't really enjoyed Totk do fsr and by god I don't understand the unbridled praise it seems to garner everywhere. This video has been a slight breath of fresh air. Unfortunately the runaway success of Botw might have entrenched an ironically even more restrictive formular in the frnachise than OOT ever did. However as you pointed out that remains to be seen. You are also correct that I miss the Triforce (and tbh all of the loosely connected lore) far more than I would have ever thought prior to Botw. For me at least Link's Awakening was an Awakening. I was more engaged in it (and even SS's remake) than Botw after a good few hours not to mention totk. There's just something about the absolute boundless nature of modern Zelda that unfortunately doesn't appeal to me. Twilight Princess though is probably worth a replay at some point. It's been quite a while since my last playthrough.

Why did they make the mistake of rehashing Botw with TotK? This is why I don't have full faith in then anymore. Where is the ambition at Nintendo these days? Their game design has been purposely making almost every franchise easier than in the past. The Mario RPG remake and tTYD made certain mechanics more forgiving; Mario Wonder only got challenging in the last 10% of the game; etc. They're not longer crafting difficulty curves and instead want everyone to 'finish' their games on a first playthrough. With TotK it's shocking how much of a regash it is and even more that the devs refused to give fans better dungeons and enemy variety which were 2 of the biggest complaints of botw. I think there are a lot of negative trends going on with Nintendo and the industry right now. Depth and challenge is at a lowpoint.

If I wanted to play a new release that gives me the feelings BOTW does, I'd have a plethora to choose from. But what other modern AAA games really fit the niche old Zelda games used to fill? These connections mean the world to me, because the Hero of Time became so much more than the title of the fame he was introduced in.

Twilight Princess has been my favorite Zelda game since I first started playing games in general, was the first game I ever played, and usually I get that nostalgia leads me to think it's better than newer releases and I'm just biased. But after pouring well over 300 hours into BOTW...TOTK literally didn't change enough for me to feel anything but exhausted at the idea of giving it fifty or sixty hours. Some of the story and character stuff is cool, and it's maybe not as vague a world as BOTW, but it's really just one of those games where you look up a playthrough on RUclips because it's too similar to the first game.
Twilight Princess had this world, this masterful atmosphere, and you remember every single character even just the random, unnamed townspeople of Castle Town. Link's story was so much nicer too, a farmboy becoming a hero to protect his friends and the kids who look up to him. Becoming a legend not because he set out to save Princess Zelda, he didn't even know her. He set out just to save his little town, and then he kept going in the end to save the whole realm.

I hate to be a disappointing Dennis here, but I'm finding it very difficult to think of a game with the same kind of plot and story ideas as Twilight Princess, even within the Zelda series. Majora's Mask is similarly dark and creepy, and also features a similar antagonist, but that's about it.
If I had to nail down the important themes of Twilight Princess, I think they'd be more or less the following: a light world and a dark world that interact with each other, an ancient tribe that displeased the gods by becoming too powerful and arrogant, a scrappy hero who rises from obscurity to save a kingdom and his friends, a usurping villain who seems powerful but is weak underneath and can't successfully master the power he uses, and a mischievous sidekick who starts by trying to use the protagonist but ultimately forms a bond with him.
Apart from the last one, this actually kind of resembles the story of Star Wars (light side and dark side, the downfall of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker, and the Empire overall), so you might enjoy a good Star Wars game like Jedi Survivor. I also think it's possible that you'd enjoy Golden Sun and its sequel, since they mix combat with puzzles and feature some of these plot elements as well. And I've also often heard Okami brought up in this respect (dispelling the curses in several areas does feel somewhat like banishing the twilight), but it's a little simplistic with the puzzles.
I don't know, I'm really spitballing here. You may have to just play it by ear and look around until you see a game that gives you a Twilight Princess-y vibe.

There are games (Resident Evil 4 springs to mind) that have such flexible gameplay that every segment can feel different every time you replay it, and that's what I'd call a really replayable game.

The implication is the Forest Temple was once the mansion of the Poe Sisters when they were alive. I theorize it was shelter during the Civil War. That would explain why Link's mother came to the forest in the first place. And if there ended up being Bloodshed there, it may have cursed the place. Thus, the Dream Hallways and the Hands.

Yup! I love Twilight Princess and feel incredibly underwhelmed by BotW and TotK.
These Wild Era Zelda games just feel kind of directionless to me. I can't help but think of them as ADHD simulators whenever I play them because they're designed to entice you in every which way and most of what you can engage with is so short and simple that they can be completed before you even need to bother engaging any deep focus at all. These games feel to me like a big empty world full of trivial mobile game-esq challenges, with garry's mod/dev tools enabled (and really these tools pale in comparison to garry's mod or real dev tools). It's just not possible to create the kinds of narrative arcs and player progression that I find satisfying with the kind of lack of direction these games have. Such openness is great for sandboxes, but not for adventures where the gameplay and narrative are coherent with each other.
I've seen people complain that TP's opening takes too long, but that's actually one thing I love about TP. It's opening perfectly illustrates what I mean when I talk about gameplay and narrative coherence. The gameplay of TP's opening is slow and mundane, because Link's life as a farm boy in a little mountain village, before he gets thrust into adventure, is slow and mundane. I love that TP's opening almost feels like a life sim game like Stardew Valley. That's why I never get bored or feel like it's a tedious obstacle to the "real" game. I love to just walk around Ordon village and roleplay like I am just a farm boy, playing with the dogs, fishing, herding goats, and helping the townsfolk with mundane tasks. If anything, I usually draw TP's intro out longer to really soak in that first act of Link's peaceful life. It makes that moment when Link is force-ably transformed into a wolf and imprisoned REALLY impactful. You can feel what it feels like for Link's peaceful life to be taken away from him through the gameplay itself.
TP isn't the only Zelda game to do this. It was a staple of 3D Zelda's (and even 2D Zelda's starting with A Link to the Past) before BotW. Oot had you run around the Kokiri forest like one of the Kokiri themselves, Wind Waker has you spend time on Outset as one of it's inhabitants, Skyward Sword let you live a few normal days on Skyloft. Even Majora's Mask, with it's unique approach, still has you confined to clock town in the early game so you have to sort of live amongst the people whose lives are at stake from the falling moon. BotW and TotK completely skip these kinds of fist act gameplay intros and thrust you right into a weird amalgamation of the second and third acts.

Regarding Navi and Tatl, I think people would be a lot more appreciative of them if they'd realized that the fairies are what allow you to Z-Target.
One of the most useful mechanics in the game is directly tied to those characters, but myself and I think many children at the time simply didn't make that connection.
Even when fighting Ganondorf and Navi specifically says "I can't help you in this fight" and the game takes away your ability to target him, my only reaction was "Why would I need your help? You're useless", completely missing the entire point of her existence.

Plot, characterization and world-building were developed in harmony with one another just far enough that it left an emotional impact. Plus, that story was seamlessly integrated with the gameplay mechanics in a way that gave the latter a reason for existing.

What a great and thoughtfully put together video! It deserves more views! I love Twilight Princess. The atmosphere/soundtrack is unmatched in my opinion. While many people play games for the gameplay or story, i play for the atmosphere. Shadow of the Colossus is another favourite game of mine. there isnt much of a story, and the gameplay (atleast on the ps2/ps3 versions) is questionable. but the atmosphere, again, is unmatched, along with the sound design/soundtrack. The dungeons in TP feel like art pieces. the entrance to the forest temple is one of the greatest first impressions ever for a first dungeon. The city in the sky is one of the coolest/surreal things ive ever experienced looking back on it. I adore surrealism, and knowing that this dungeon was based off an Escher painting is just so neat. Ive played OOT, but i didnt have the nostalgia attached to it since i never played it as a child. its a good game but i dont love it as much as TP. BOTW is also a decent game, and i love the atmosphere while just wandering throughout the map. but again, it just feels like theres something missing comapred to TP. The one gripe i have with TP is the whole wolf mechanic. i find wolves boring tbh, and that they probably couldve picked something cooler for Link to transform into. The wolf parts do drag the game down, and i can understand why people would dislike the game due to this. The twilight realm atmosphere is awesome tho, and the music that plays while youre wandering around in it is phenomenal. Also, contrary to popular opinion, i dont find the opening tutorial area that bad. if anything, OOT's opening/starting area was more boring to me despite being quicker. BOTW's tutorial area was great, but it only really has that effect on the first blind playthrough. havent played TOTK and dont plan to. seems like glorified DLC with a high price tag to boot.

I haven't played either of them more than once, but Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time I play through at least once every year or two. I think what made TP special to me outside of nostalgia was the atmosphere it was able to convey through the music and tone every place that visited I was able to smell, hear and taste (metaphorically) as I entered each region (especially Snowpeak and the Twilight Realm) that I didn’t really feel in other games save for the shadow temple and Inside of Jabu Jabu from OoT

One of the most interesting things about Wind Waker is that the 3D Zelda game with the most cartoonish aesthetic also had the most realistically written characters. Link actually behaves like a child, albeit a responsible one; Tetra (i.e. Zelda) isn't comfortable with her role as the protector of the Triforce of Wisdom; and Ganon is portrayed as a man first and an irrepressible fountain of evil second.
Even in great Zelda games like Ocarina of Time, Ganon is often portrayed simply as an evil power-worshiper who destroys everything he touches. Wind Waker shook things up by having him accuse the _gods_ of destroying Hyrule just to stop him, as if they didn't care about the fate of Hyrule's people. When he says, "Your gods destroyed you!", he's insinuating that their scorched-earth approach is evidence that they hate and disdain all of humanity, not just him.
That isn't the perspective of the game, though. The King of Red Lions confronts Ganon with another interpretation, which is that the gods meant to free the people of Hyrule from a past where Ganon would always threaten to dominate them. The Great Sea isn't a lush, fertile kingdom like Hyrule, but the people there are happy and free from coercion; it's sort of like the contrast between Greece and Persia in ancient history. This is why he makes a wish on the Triforce, not to restore Hyrule to its former glory, but to let Hyrule disappear for the sake of the future. The king of Hyrule is willing to let the past go, which includes letting his old self die; that's what distinguishes him from his would-be usurper, Ganon.
It's a very thought-provoking bit of writing, and the fact that the gods don't speak for themselves allows you to draw your own conclusions. There's more than just art design that makes Wind Waker my favorite Zelda game.

Apart from Links village there aren’t really any homes to visit. Kakariko Village is almost abandoned. Why is it just the chief and the bomb maker who lives there? That just seems odd. I wish there were little sheds in Hyrule Field or things to interact with apart from enemies and the occasional bug or poe

    • @cinnamonnoir2487
      @cinnamonnoir2487  16 дней назад

I can appreciate your perspective, and I would certainly agree that the world of Breath of the Wild is more vibrant and colorful than Twilight Princess's. And yes, Kakariko Village is a particularly dramatic example of those differences, but I think it's important to remember that the decision to have relatively few normal people here isn't arbitrary. It stems directly from events in the story, and there's a point to it, although admittedly that point is pretty depressing.
When you run across the survivors holed up in the chief's house while the town is still in Twilight, the bomb maker mentions that several other villagers have already been killed by the shadow beasts. Ordinarily the town would also be partially inhabited by traders sent by the Gorons on Death Mountain, but because of their own problems they've stopped coming down altogether, which makes the village even more deserted. More than any other place in the game, Kakariko sells how terrible the threat of the Twilight really is. It's extremely bleak and one of the few times in the game where you arrive at a situation too late to prevent innocent lives from being lost.
One thing I would like to point out, though, is that it's not strictly true that Kakariko Village remains abandoned for the entire game. After you go through the Goron Mines a lot of them return to Kakariko to help rebuild it, and all the children from Ordon Village stay there as well except for Malo. It's still pretty depopulated compared to towns in other Zelda games, but it's not "almost abandoned" at that point.
Both Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild have reasons for putting as many people in towns as they do. Twilight Princess is trying to sell its story and atmosphere, and Breath of the Wild is trying to immerse you in the setting and give you a lot of things to interact with. My one big problem with all the bustle and energy in BOTW's towns is that it seems _too_ happy for a game where Ganon's minions supposedly oppressed the Hylians for an entire century. The world design and the game's backstory don't make sense together in my opinion, but I'm not surprised that people enjoy the lively world that resulted from the team making that decision.

Unfortunately I never got to finish it. Then I played BoTW earlier this year and have just picked up TP again, starting from the beginning to finally get the full experience.

But honestly the only ajustment I would really make to the game, is I think the environment could convey the story a little better, if we got to see more of how characters and places that are not part of the main story line was affected by the current events. I guess I missed the bomb makers comment about the recent devastations, that certainly is an important part of the story.

I suppose that at least some of the evaluation of these Zelda games has a great deal to do with where one entered the series. So many people talk about how wonderful OOT is, but I have no idea, because I didn't play it. My entry to the series was the first LOZ, and then Zelda II, and LTTP. After that, I didn't play another Zelda game until Twilight Princess, not because of any objection to the game, but because I didn't have access to the hardware on which to play it and because I spent a lot of my twenties distracted by other, pressing responsibilities. For me, TP felt like a natural continuation of LTTP; when I went back after TP and played WW (which I did like FWIW), the story felt so jarring to me because of the opening references to the "Hero of Time" that I didn't really connect with the storyline the entire time I played.
For me, the 2D/2.5D games are the ones that resonate with me, and whose elements I look for in callbacks later in the series, and TP hits a lot of those notes. Things you mentioned as being critical elements of 3D Zelda games (sidekicks and transformations) either didn't exist (for the former) or didn't have a significant story impact (the latter) on any of the games, so to my mind, they are not essential parts of what makes a Zelda game. And, in some ways, LTTP has elements which can be found in BOTW and TOTK in fuller form: the ability to fight enemies with odd objects (being able to reflect Aghanim's magic with the net), not requiring you to complete story elements to face Ganon (e.g, you don't need to upgrade the Master Sword to the highest level, or even at all; you can permanently lose your shield, you can not upgrade your armor - and I have played through and finished the game in each of these ways - you can miss the moon pearl, you can tackle the dungeons out of order).
I would suggest, further, that direct sequels (in story if not style and substance) are a hallmark of Zelda: LOZ, Zelda II, and LTTP are all set in the same continuity; WW is a direct sequel to OOT because it requires knowing that story as an entry point to really understanding the plot of WW (and MM Is a direct sequel to OOT); Four Swords, FSA, and Minish Cap are in a direct sequence as well. If anything, trilogies seem to be a defining hallmark of Zelda games: three games share an overall plot arc.
Thus, my theory is that, for a lot of people, the Zelda game that underpins their idea of what the series should be about is the game they played in their most formative years, and for a lot of people who are really active in the Zelda community, that's going to be OOT, and I think that's why elements that are prominent in that game are held up as standards of what the games are supposed to be; however, for older players like me, our touchstone is LTTP, and in that respect, BOTW and TOTK hit a lot of the notes, save the importance of the Triforce which, I'm hoping, will be resolved in a forthcoming conclusion to the BOTW trilogy.
But no matter what, I think we can all agree that Skyward Sword was demonstratively awful, taking the worst elements of the preceding LOZ games and making them central to the story.

    • @cinnamonnoir2487
      @cinnamonnoir2487  Год назад

You certainly have a unique and interesting perspective on the Zelda series, having skipped straight from A Link to the Past to Twilight Princess, and I think it's pretty cool that you consider TP a worthy follow-up to a game that it's separated from by more than a decade of changes to the series, including a shift to three-dimensional gameplay. And yes, I realize that what I've described aren't really "essential" to _all_ Zeldas; I was mostly talking about the 3D entries...and of course, the list still isn't bulletproof with regard to them. The list was more of a way of organizing my thoughts than an objective encapsulation of all things Zelda.
I wouldn't call the sequels you're talking about "direct" because so much in-universe time separates them. Yes, the story of The Wind Waker references Ocarina of Time, but nothing that Link did in that game is actually _relevant_ to what the new Link does centuries later; they likely aren't even related (the same goes for the Hero's Shade and Link from TP). I actually disagree with you that having played OOT is necessary to truly appreciate WW's plot. As for Majora's Mask, it does indeed follow OOT's events directly, but because Termina is totally disconnected from Hyrule, nothing from OOT really affects what he does in MM. To me, a _direct_ sequel would be one in which the consequences of events from the previous game form the premise for the current game, like how Metroid Prime: Corruption is to Metroid Prime: Echoes.
Seriously, though, just because I mildly disagree with your points doesn't mean I don't appreciate what you have to say here. You've given me a lot to think about.

OoT is a wonderful game, with a very rich story, plot and world-building.
The dungeons are memorable, not only in soundtracks but in atmosphere. The main character, Link, evolves as does the world around him. Exploring Hyrule feels like an adventure.
The side characters stay with you as do their sacrifices.
It has a great ending. The only game that can be more beloved than OoT is Majora's Mask, which also has a rich world, a mythos that's unveiled to us through side stories, and a lot of side characters that make you feel.
Twilight Princess, well, it has my favorite Hyrule. Empty, perhaps, but I loved hunting the heart pieces, so, it works. The story is good. The temples are good. But, OoT feels more magical.
Last point, OoT to Majora's does feel like a sequel. But that's coming from someone that played them pretty much in the year they were released.

Hey, why not make that video anyway? There's room for more than one middling Twilight Princess retrospective on RUclips. I know because I've already watched more than one.
Seriously, though, making your own content is lots of fun. Don't let me dissuade you from trying it.

I feel like breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom are sacrificing narative and character for open world freedom. No characters can have arcs because progress cant exist. And progress cant exist because everything has to be availabe all at once no matter what you do. So only the most fundemental plot points can exist. Link sets out, link beats the last boss. Everything else is a sidequest, or a flashback.
Of course botw and totk are fun to play, and you can spend hundreds of hours doing it, so i can understand that some people think the trade off is worth it. I think that the trade off isnt worth it though because what it gains from the open world in short term fun, it looses from the narative on lasting impact. I remember ocarina of time and twilight princess way better than breath of the wild. Granted i played each of those games multiple times. But even with multiple playthroughs i still spent way more hours in breath of the wild. And have even played botw more recently. But it just doesnt stick in my brain like the older games. Tears of the kingdome is still pretty fresh in my memory, so maybe the zonai devices will make a difference in the long run, but i still hope they compromise on the 100% freedom for the next game, at least enough to actually give the game a story.

Really glad i got to experience how phenomenal Zelda games were from 1998 - 2006. Skyward Sword and BotW/TotK are good but not worth playing a second time in my opinion. Twilight Princess gets shit on alot and i don't know why. it's truly the best in many ways.

Skyward sword is one of the worst Zelda games imo, the sky could have been great but it’s absolutely barren and the imprisoned fight(s) are the worst in zelda’s history (imo) SS did have a few really good dungeons though, the great cistern is one of my favourites in the entire series…shame it’s in the worst 3D zelda game

@leonc9760 That's what I thought about Skyward Sword until I bought it for switch. They did fix a few things, and my opinion about the game went from bad to mixed. It's definitely not a masterpiece, but it's not a bad game. My opinion respectively stands with OoT, MM, WW and TP being the best zeldas of all time.

in my opinion, botw did had a companion and arguably the best one, its so good that you don't realize that he was a sidekick until tears of the kingdom, if you played botw you'll understand what i'm talking about when saying that kass is your companion, he follows you around the whole kingdom giving important info about the land and important landmarks while having an amazing theme that now feels missing on any stable in totk, he even guides you through the champions ballad and now that he solved many mysteries alongside link, he went to his own adventure whatever he wanted to go, but he disapeared without even telling his old friend penn, so penn just like link in majora's visited another kingdom seeking for his missing friend, i think that maybe kass passed away a few years before tears of the kingdom, thanks to hudson's daughter we know that there are at least 5 years between botw and totk and his daughters where too young at botw

Great video, I personally love wind WW and TP and really miss the old dungeon and puzzle formulas from the traditional Zelda games. I’m really enjoying TOTK and think its world is one of the best realised open worlds out there but destructible gear makes being “rewarded” with them suck and the temples are too simple and easy. The perfect combination for me would be the open world of hyrule but with traditional dungeons. TOTK with 5-8 well made and creative dungeons would have been epic

First time i played TWP it took me 64 hrs to get to the final boss ganandorf. then my save file got accidentally deleted before i actually fought him. and i had to do it all over again. funnily enough i dont recall it being tedious at all. only took me 25 hrs on my second time around.

Nintendo nowadays has become so distracted by money that they forget a good majority of Zelda fans disliked Skyward Sword. Yet we get a remaster of it on switch.

My biggest problem with new zelda is it some how manages to be an overly bland game that despite trying new mechanics and gameplay ideas never really fleshes them out in a way that benefits the zelda style of game.
I feel like im playing a spin off instead of a mainline game.
My biggest personal issues are the lack of koji kondo style soundtracks the largely empty world and the annoying weapon system.
"Cool i just found this kick ass sword but wait it broke after only a few hits..." I traveled across the map to get it and I feel very much robbed.
One thing I absolutely love is the climbing feature its probably the most satisfying mechanic in the game which says a lot.

One of biggest weaknesses of the Classic Zelda formula was the poor utility of the arsenal of items. Most of them have very limited use outside of the temple you find them in or were just redundant in general. For example, the Megaton Hammer in OOT, most of the Masks in Majoras Mask, nearly everything in Wind Waker and in most 2D Zelda games (except ALBW, the Oracle games and to a lesser extent LA) etc. Skyward Sword actually handled this issue better than most games.
This is where the advantages of the Sheikah Slate from BotW and Ultrahand from TotK come in. There's never a situation in Modern Zelda where these items are useless or redundant.
Its better design to have only 5 abilities with infinite utility than 40 different items with only one time or limited use.

    • @cinnamonnoir2487
      @cinnamonnoir2487  Год назад +4

You're going to have to be more specific about items being "redundant" in the earlier Zelda games, and your idea that the arsenal was "poorly" used, to convince me of your point. I love the items from most 3D Zelda games and consider them to be much more fun than the Sheikah Slate abilities, whether or not the latter are more broadly useful. Your use of the words "infinite utility" to describe the handful of items the player has access to throughout BOTW and TOTK could use some justification as well.
The transformation masks from Majora's Mask are actually pretty good evidence _against_ your argument, as each one possessed multiple unique abilities that were used in a wide variety of interesting ways both inside and outside of dungeons. This was in _addition_ to dungeon items _and_ about 20 other masks with lots of bizarre and interesting uses. Wind Waker was very clever about how it required the use of items from early and late dungeons (the combo of Iron Boots and the Deku Leaf in the Wind Temple comes to mind) and made great use of items in combat. I'll give you the Megaton Hammer in OOT (and add the Skull Hammer from Wind Waker, which has the same problem), but that's one item out of an arsenal that was generally a lot of fun to use.
I'm sorry, but even though I can sort of get why so many people love the two most recent Zelda games, I don't agree with your explanation of why that is.
