    Arbiter's Grounds may be one of my all time favorites. The atmosphere, the chilling thematic context, the boss/miniboss, and the item. But above all that, the dungeon's pacing is essentially perfect. AG flows really well and you're always on the move and discovering new things, great dungeon.

      You definitely make some great points and who knows if I had to rank it again maybe it'd be a little higher because Arbiter's Grounds was the toughest one to place. Really great dungeon.

      @@rajgus7638I think it’s unfair to call ALBW a remake, even a half one. Sure the map, plot, and overall art style is similar but the central gameplay mechanic differentiates it remarkably.
      It’s not a remake or half remake any more than Majora’s Mask wad. It’s more of a spiritual successor.

    • @MrDrBoi
      @MrDrBoi  11 месяцев назад +6

      Linear design isn't as black and white as good or bad in my opinion. I don't think it's inconsistent to look at linear design in each dungeon and judge it on its execution. The way Goron Mines and Palace of Twilight used it was poor, while Snowpeak Ruins and the Temple of Time deserved praise in my eyes for doing something unique and different.

      City in the Sky goes on for far too long. I replayed all the 3D Zeldas over the past couple of years and TP's dungeons generally have the tendency to overstay their welcome. Generally, they make me feel like the experience offered by the dungeon peaks at the mini boss, and then it just keeps going. This was especially true with City in the Sky when my kids got bored and left the room. I guess I just like tightly knit dungeons that you can overcome in about 45 minutes to an hour. Just my opinion, though.

    i loved doing lakebed. granted i was like 23 and playing the hd version but i found it to be extremely satisfying to slowly figure out. it makes me sad when people rank it low because if you’re willing to invest patience, it’s a really awesome slow burn of learning mechanics through repeated visual cues, which is super important to me in zelda dungeons

    Twilight Princess’s dungeons should be the standard that Nintendo look toward for reference if they ever do decide to return to the classic Zelda formula on the off chance. Each one shines in its own unique way, and each feel like a daunting challenge, even if you’ve played the game more times than you can count like I have.

    I personally enjoy "City in the Sky" the most simply because of the atmosphere and, especially, the music.

    Armogohma was amusing and fun enough, considering the temple it came at the end of. I can't conceive of a particularly more fitting boss, the use of the Dominion Rod on those huge statues as the key mechanic made sense in terms of draining its energy, and the encounter was also self-aware in terms of the silly "second phase" complete with that goofy remix of the boss theme

    one thing you can do in the sky dungeon, when the wind blow, instead of the iron boots, you can use the chain ball, bc it weight a lot, and you cam walk more faster, and also attack/defensing angaist enemy, I always used that idem in that wa for that dungeon
    also in my third run, I somehow skipped half that dungeon bc with the double clawsjot you cam go accross the center areo to the boss one by a precise shot on the top of the panels that dont move, and Link will move on the top of it so you can go across it even if they are nit moving, but require really precise manouver

    My favourite one is Snowpeak, just because of the story (the dungeon itself is already really strong). That's why I kinda like that the ball and chain is mandatory for the Zant fight so we can see part of it during speedruns.

    Great content. The best evidence anyone could provide that TP's dungeons are all stellar is that among fans of the game, no one's ranking is the same, and all rankings are completely based on personal preferences. My favourites are probably Arbiter's Grounds, Forest Temple and Snowpeak because of their ambiance, but ask me tomorrow and I might change my mind. I "disliked" Lakebed temple for its repetitive design because I get easily lost in it, but adore its mechanics and grandiose boss fight. I would understand why it'd be top of anyone's list. Same goes for all the dungeons, really. There really isn't a single bad one.

    I love how thought-provoking and detailed your coverage of each dungeon is. Although I would heavily disagree with some of your placements, (Snowpeak Ruins and Arbiter’s Grounds are two of the best Zelda dungeons period, all games included) I do agree that old school 3D Zelda dungeons are a staple of the series that needs to return in the next game.
    Side note: You mentioned how Snowpeak Manor feels strange and you’re unsure as to what emotion the music is attempting to convey. My theory is that it was once the home of the Hero of Time (The Hero’s Shade), granted to him by the King of Hyrule after the conclusion of Ocarina of Time. The location and eerie feeling of isolation and loneliness would align with the sad ending to the Hero of Time’s story.

    I agree with you 200% about Palace of Twilight. It's funny cause most other people praise it, but thanks for vocalizing my disdains with it.
    Yes, the atmosphere and soundtrack are great, but, yes, the linearity makes it fail to stand out. And I, too, was let down by the Zant boss fight.
    If I may add: in a whole twilight-themed dungeon, I find it ironic how poorly utilized wolf form was. The entire dungeon treats it as a handicap/punishment, whereas, in my opinion, considering the earlier parts of the adventure, this should've been the opportunity to really make the feature shine. This could have been a great parallel to OoT's Spirit Temple where, in a similar fashion to doing that dungeon part as kid and part as adult, this one could've been done part as human and part as wolf. For that, I call it a missed opportunity. Furthermore, the fact that Hyrule Castle and Arbiter's Grounds both utilized wolf form positively (that is, you actually willingly transform to wolf form to progress) makes it all the worse that Palace of Twilight fails to do so.
    And for the Zant boss fight: yes, it was fun, I won't deny that. But this was another both missed opportunity and letdown. First off, to me, a dungeon's boss should capture the identity of the dungeon. Zant, the usurper king of twilight, in concept, would've done so excellently, but this is ruined in execution. The fact that the battlefield transforms into all light world areas takes away from the theming. Second, Zant, even if not the final boss, has been the villain our adventure has been leading up to. With all that anticipation built up, it became such a major letdown that this boss fight was just a glorified boss rush. Zant really should've had his own unique identity as a boss. And this could be done regardless of him being second to Ganondorf. And you needn't look any further than Skyward Sword as an example. Girahim was memorable to me because, despite being the servant of the true final boss, his boss fights conveyed his own identity.

  • @KateBrod
    @KateBrod 11 месяцев назад +1

    I honestly love the fight against Zant. Yes, he mimics the fights we had in the past, but THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER. Zant is a pathetic follower who cannot do anything himself and barely even has an identity of his own when you finally come face to face with him. And when you finally get to the last stage of the fight, you discover his fighting style is chaotic, utterly ineffective and you get the sense that he truly couldn't have taken the throne without backstabbing and a powerful ally. Zant is nothing without others and his fight shows exactly that.

    I hate the lakebed temple. Every single time I do that dungeon I get stuck on the first room with the revolving stairs being turned into a waterslide. How is it, that after 100% completing the game and beating it over 10 times, that I STILL cannot remember or know what to do in that first room. I end up spending 30 or so minutes trying to get what I can from it, or to this day I will look at a guide because I just don't want to deal with it.
    The dungeon has my favorite room in the game, and it is massive with some pretty good puzzles thrown in for a big navigational challenge.
    But that first room and the lackluster bossfight at the end just kill the dungeon for me. It is not worthy of being above arbiters's grounds. In my opinion, of course.

    TP is my fav Zelda game and the dungeons are one of the reason. When I created my own written list of fav Zelda Dungeons (before BotW and I never played SS all of the way through), TP had the most entries in it. Anyway, here's my own Ranking-
    9. Palace of Twilight- This is the only dungeon I genuinely dislike. Out of ALL of the dungeons (Including BoTW), I would still rank it last because of the first part of the dungeon- going those 2 sols and those dumb hands that chase you, I hate that part. Only part of this dungeon I genuinely like is the boss battle since it's one of my favs in the game. I will give props to the atmosphere and music. It also felt like I was doing the same puzzles and that got a bit boring.
    8. City in the Sky- Now, I don't think this is a bad temple by any means, but compared to the other dungeons, this one just ended up being this low because I enjoyed the others more. In some ways it reminded me of the Lakebed Temple, only in the sky. This is due to the layout, you have one main area, and 4 other areas connected to it via North, South, East, West. Not to mention you get another clawshot to form the double one. Don't get me wrong I love the double clawshot, but other dungeons just have more fun items to use for me personally. This is a common problem with the lower ranks, but it felt slow paced at times and I didn't retreading back. Still these are nickpicks, but I do look at the details. I like the puzzles and the boss is a lot of fun to face.
    7. Lakebed Temple- Comparing this to the Water Temple in OOT, they're both tied honestly because their so similar in the layout, plus you get a similar item in each of them (here's the hookshot, the other is the longshot). I will say this, I enjoy the sub-boss more, definitely one of the grossest bosses in the game franchise lol. I did like the use of water bombs and having to use bomb arrows here is a treat. It has interesting puzzles, but I still get lost a bit at times because I've forgotten something. Reason why I still like this more than City in the Sky though is water aspect when it comes to unlocking puzzles.
    6. Snowpeak Ruins- For me this dungeon does have my fav atmosphere and I like that the dungeon is lived in by Yeto and Yetta (they are adorable btw). And I really do like the sub boss, ball of chain, and even the final boss (and the aftermath). The puzzles are fine too. Biggest issue is the pacing, it felt so slow to me and this coming from someone that generally loves ice levels. I also didn't like that this was basically one big fetch quest too. I still like it, but it just never really grabbed me. Still the story around it is fun and that's why it's higher up.
    5. Temple of Time- Hahaha, interesting how we both ranked this dungeon at #5. Omg, I loved this reinvention of the Temple of Time. I definitely wasn't expecting it and it's one of 2 times this game shocks me (the other being Midna's true identity). When I first entered the Sacred grove, I was like, "Okay no Temple of Time in this game." Man was I wrong. I really like the concept and despite this temple's linear style I did enjoy using the Dominion rod, the sub-boss and the main boss (that ending part was hilarious, I just use my ball in chain to take it out easily lol). But yeah I can't ignore just how linear the dungeon design it. I like linear dungeons, but this was too on the nose and it got boring at times.
    4. Arbiter's Grounds- (Shields up) First part of this dungeon is a bit boring because it felt like a rehash from OOT's Forest Temple when you hunt down the Poes. It starts to get better after that and I gets downright fun after you get the Spinner, which is one of my fav items in the game, let alone the franchise. Dungeon also has one of my fav sub-bosses in the franchise. Final boss is fun, but it's a bit too chaotic at times for me in the beginning and in the 2nd half, I feel I have to time everything right to get a hit on him. But the Spinner and Sub-boss are why it's ranked this high. The flaws are pretty much canceled out by the pros. Also, even though this doesn't effect anything, I do prefer this to OOT's Forest Temple because there's not too much 'back and forth'.
    3. Hyrule Castle- My fav final dungeon period in the franchise which leads up to my fav fight with Ganondorf. I do love that final fight with King Bulbin and the fact that he actually helps you on your progress lol. I love that hidden section of the palace (I missed it on my first playthrough, my brother found it though lol). I really like how your allies actually help out just for once, in a way expanding on what happened in WW when the Ritos save you and Telma. Only reason why it isn't higher is because I feel it drags a bit in a few places.
    2. Forest Temple- Hot take, this is my fav Forest dungeon (yes even more than OOT's). This game also has my fav version of the boomerang too since I can carry bombs to enemies or obstacles lol. Love the sub-boss and I love it even better how he helps you with the dungeon boss. Only reason why it's not number 1 is because #1 just really surprised me in a number of ways.
    1. Goron Mines- This is what I love about countdowns- hearing different opinions. Your reason for putting this dungeon at the bottom is one of the reasons why I love this dungeon. I will agree that the iron boots are one of the weaker items in the franchise, but this dungeon reinvented them in a way that I love. The ability to defy gravity was not something I expected and I love this mechanic! Also I generally do not like fire levels as a rule, but this and WW are big exceptions. Goron mines is actually my fav Zelda dungeon for this reason- it took something I normally dislike and made me love it. I also enjoy the boss too, he was fun to beat. Also, give me easier dungeons I can enjoy than hard ones I would tear my hair out of it. Plus when have Zelda dungeons overall been hard? There's exceptions *looking at BoTW's Hyrule Castle*, but they're still in the minority. That's just my preference though.
    Enjoyed this video at lot and it's interesting how some of your favs were in my lows and vice versa.
