Fun fact, doing a front flip has indeed been done in a decathlon. Some clever guy though that you could get further by doing a flip, as in more of your energy goes vertical instead of horizontal. When he did it he failed once by stepping over the line, but the second time he did it he beat the world record. He did not get a third jump because the next game the front flip got banned due to safety issues, understandable, you dont want your athletes to brake their necks in a jump now do we.
what would be most dangerous was probably the precedent and pressure it would put on other competitors to TRY and risk the move, knowing that theres a clear advantage in it, but the risk would have to be against their practiced movements, so its either break your neck probably or go in for second place at best. if it were a practiced technique then maybe it could have more legitimacy in the eyes of the event but youre right, its still risky in learning and execution anyhow
I honestly think a big part of it is for the sake of kids. Top level athletes could all learn a front flip, but the IAAF probably doesn't want 8 year olds doing flips while running at their top speed...
How ridiculous. Not your decision of course I don't blame you. Gymnast do all kinds of flip and land on a harder ground than sand so it's tolerated elsewhere in the Olympics. As for banning things for danger levels, pole vaulting isn't??? Choosing to make a flip is your own choice, a pole breaking isn't and is a lot more dangerous than misslanding a flip. Some cringe dude definitely went something like ''That's not how it should look/ridiculous'' and made up some excuse to ban this. Olympics should be about the absolute human limit. this feels like banning the Fosbury flop for high jump.
@@ElBobDestroyer I see your argument, but the difference between gymnasts is that their flips are vertical while the long jump "flip" is mostly horizontal, making it a lot more dangerous. As for the Fosbury flop, there is just GIANT pillow underneath, so when you know what you are doing, you'll land on your neck of shoulders, taking the load of your head. The odds of getting permanent damages with the long jump flip as to compared Fosbury flop and gymnastics flips is a lot more. Still, i think it was made in a panic due to how scary it looked, and i dont blame them as in the next year, if they didnt ban it, someone would without a doubt get hurt doing it.
I've always thought this was a lame decision. Just upgrade the sand to some kind of marking foam (like high jump landing pad got upgraded for the fosbury flop)---front flips are actually quite safe since you clear your head immediately and mostly land on your butt if you don't complete the flip. It can be bad for your knees or ankles if you land too compressed, but I think a foam landing would help that.
@@chuggaa100 it's a good extra 15-25kg which would slow a normal person down especially on the acceleration. Yes you can still run in it but can you run at olympic speeds.
FYI there was a glitch in BotW that was named after the Fosbury Flop. I don't think it works in TotK, but if you unequip your shield a frame after leaving the ground during a shield-spin jump, you can clear jumps at least double Link's body height. (source: Kleric) And Link ragdolls _majestically_ as you do it.
You know what else? In the javelin throw, wouldn't the athletes be using aerodynamic throwing spears? If so, you probably could have allowed Link to use a throwing spear in that event, meaning it would have gone wayyy further.
Actually the javelin's they use are deliberately nerfed, specifically because of how good the throwers were getting, like, they got a javelin at the foot of an official, standing by the crowd, snd decided that's far enough. And rather than lengthen the stadiums around the world, they nerfed the javelin... Twice.
Remember, there's a lot of research and development that goes into athletic wear. Athlete's outfits are often designed to give them the best chance they can get. Which is to say, clothing buffs should be allowed.
Have you seen the modern runners shoes? Those shoes have carbon fiber along the sole of the shoe that makes the shoe bounce intself with a LOT of force. That thing is not what a normal human could do, it's like having springs in your feet.
Do you think he should’ve used something else in the pole vault? I think a spring shield would be accurate and fair to the springiness of the pole vault.
This is possibly my favourite video of the year. The time, effort, thought and attention to detail put in blew me away and the editing and narration made this not only extremely entertaining but genuinely compelling, I was on the edge of my figurative seat from how invested I was at points
Did you remember to account for the difference in speed of gravity between Earth and Hyrule in all of this? In Hyrule gravity is roughly 25 m/s^2 meaning he would have much more jumping, throwing, and running strength with Earth's 9.8 m/s^2. Honestly he would blow everyone else away. It wouldn't even be close.
25:51 I'm curious if there's a difference between Botw Link and Totk Link doing this now? Other than the fact Botw Link can technically do the horse sprint(hold down D-Pad Down + repeatedly press B).
@BobSB129 I meant the horse whistle sprint in my comment, and that was a glitch they patched in between games. I played Totk day 1, and it didn't have it sadly.

This does make me wonder if there's ever been a decathlete as inconsistent as Link but still do well, and whether or not this inconsistency could still give him the title as the world's best athlete
Short answer, no. Link is so wildly inconsistent and olympic decathletes are still near the top of human ability. Like you're talking about a superhuman in some events basically to be able to cleanup for some of the negative performances. This doesn't really happen. If you're just asking about inconsitency in general, but on a much smaller level than link, maybe? I would start by looking for people who compete in one event at top level and then also did the decathalon. I'm sure there aren't many but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some.
I suppose, as the video suggests, if someone was hypothetically amazing at some events and terrible at others, they would just enter those specific events instead of the decathlon.
@MumboJ technically I don't think there's anything stopping a decathlete from competing in the individual events as well. Jim Thorpe won the first decathlon and pentathlon in 1912, but he also competed in the high jump and long jump. Almost medaled in the high jump, too; tied for 4th. And keep in mind that he did all that in mismatched, ill-fitting shoes, since his own were stolen.
@@Scorpio3002 That is impressive, but what i'm saying is that if someone was terrible at half the decathlon events then why would they enter? And if they're amazing at some of the events then you just enter those ones individually.
@MumboJ because it's mathematically possible to win the decathlon that way, as the video demonstrates? Realistically, of course, this would be nearly impossible: the body-types that excel in shot-put are usually stockier, and ill-suited to any sort of foot race, let alone the 1500 meter. But if you had a genetic freak athlete who was the world-best in a couple of vastly different individual decathlon events, well, you first have them win gold in those individual events, obviously. But if they have the stamina to ALSO participate in the decathlon, and they're not afraid to humiliate themselves in a few events, there appears to be a path to victory. Honestly, if there were an "Aquatic Decathlon", Katie Ledecky could probably win it like this. She only competes in freestyle, so I have no idea how good her backstroke, butterfly or breaststroke are, but she's so far above the competition in long-distance freestyle, and is competitive enough in short-distance freestyle, that she could be trash at the other strokes and it might not even matter.

It's midnight after a tough day and this video really brightened my mood, I was watching this as intently as if it were the real olympics. The pikmin starting gun cracked me up too. Thank you for you work 😊 Cheers
6:45 Actually front flipping wouldn’t just improve link’s time, from a physics perspective it’d improve all long jump records. However, the technique was explicitly banned for being “too dangerous”.
"If the world was measured in feet and not meters that would mean link is..1 foot 8 inches tall." Here i thought Santa recruited elves, turns out they were just hylians.
You could have Link use a wing shield for the pole vault, thus granting him extra height while still having no moving parts. To simulate the springing action of the pole, you could also use the spring shield. Also, the Olympics have no rules against altering the fundamental laws of reality, so you could do jumping events on the sky labyrinth and use the low gravity to your advantage.
I feel like that runs into the Great Tiger issue in Bumbles McFumbles video. Technically magic isn't against the rules according to the international rules for boxing, but that's only because no one's done it IRL.
Besides, all the athletes compete at the same location, so if Link gets to jump in a low gravity place the others should too So how do we get 23 Olympic decathletes to Mars to test this
Spring shield! And here I was thinking like "I meeeaaan, you could probably justify using a bomb strapped to a shield for the pole vault, to get more realistic air" but yeah spring shield makes way more sense 😂
Potions are considered doping, yes. But what about gear? Athletes wear all those suits that allow them to freely move. Why not useing Dark Link armor and running at night? See how fast that would be? For High jump, shielf surfing should be allowed, he is using his own momento after all. And for pertiga jump theres options like bomb shield or a spring shield. Athletes are using tools too after all.
Here’s my suggestion for pole vault. Attach a stabilizer to the end of a regulation sized pole for pole vault or as close as possible, then attach a basket or something to the end of it and launch link. That’s as close as you’ll get I thinm
One of the cool things in botw and totk is that link (and the horses) tend to be on the upper limits of real human capacity whenever it doesn't effect gameplay negatively. Throw distance aside you will find that link scores slightly worse than most of the best athletes or world records.

For the first trial, at the very least, Link is at a disadvantage agains the profesional athelets. One that you can actually fix. I'm talking about his gear. The athletes are actually using proper gear to improve their range of movement and for their feet, but Link is using something that, while comfortable for an adventure, it's not the best for sports. So maybe the sheikah's gear would be better? It's the closest I can think for Link to use in a race, as it is form fitting and with the closest I can think Link can use as sneakers. And maybe at night (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)? Jokes aside, I think it makes sense. It's not doping, it's just a dress that lets Link move better (in the night). Specially with how you let Link use a lid pot. By the way, I wouldn't say the same about the zora armor in a swimming race. That's TOO speciallized gear, that lets Link climb a waterfall. As for the polevault, seeing how Link CAN'T use a pole to impulse himself, and while I agree with the rockets... how about a shield jump with a bomb? It's nowhere as continuous as a rocket, it just gives a very big instant jump, a bit like the pole. And I kinda disagree with not letting Link use a lid pot for his high jump, that's his best technique for high jumps (for any kind of "normal" jump, really)

This is such a great idea for a video. Also I was kicking myself when that London 2012 game was removed from Steam and I hadn't bought it. Like yeah it's not amazing but it was still a lot of fun.
If Link wanted an even easier set of Gold medals he'd just enter into the power lifting events. The current men's deadlift world record is 501 kilograms (1,105 lbs). Deadlifting a thousand pounds is pretty impressive, but its not deflecting a sword blow from an angry Lynel impressive. Lynels are 15ft Tall behemoths. That's two Moose stacked on top of each other, and it'd be fair to say it'd weigh at least as much as two Moose so that's at least a 3,000lb monster with hardened combat muscles. Lynel bows have such heavy draw weight its said no human being can use them, yet Link picks them up and uses them like any other regular bow. Link would break every weight lifting record there is, in a day, with nothing more than some good night's rest and a few bananas. He probably wouldn't even break a sweat, he might grunt at most. And even after all the events finished, he'd still have enough stamina to beat the shit out of a Lynel while using one of the deadlift weights like a club. When it comes to Strength and Stamina, Link is just built different. In those categories he's pretty much a demi-god.

To be fair, link is actively trying to persevere energy while keeping at a steady pace, so he could almost definitely run faster if he wanted to.
link is a one-pace runner and will NOT change for a sprint race. you get what you get.
Impressive thing about link is he can run that fast in full plate armor.
@@_Sindussplate armor isn't that heavy
@@chuggaa100 it's a good extra 15-25kg which would slow a normal person down especially on the acceleration. Yes you can still run in it but can you run at olympic speeds.

FYI there was a glitch in BotW that was named after the Fosbury Flop.
I don't think it works in TotK, but if you unequip your shield a frame after leaving the ground during a shield-spin jump, you can clear jumps at least double Link's body height. (source: Kleric)
And Link ragdolls _majestically_ as you do it.
I love how even though shotput is a rather low scoring event, Link did so absurdly well at it that it gave it such a shit ton of points anyway
You know what else? In the javelin throw, wouldn't the athletes be using aerodynamic throwing spears? If so, you probably could have allowed Link to use a throwing spear in that event, meaning it would have gone wayyy further.
Might even make up for only being able to count his regular jump for the Long Jump.
if he did that i have a feeling it would have gone right over the side of the labyrinth never to be seen again
@@girzarro I wonder how the Olympics would score something like that...
@@SirPonnd "and that's a dead man in the 31st row, full points to Link!"
Actually, some of the clothing is getting banned. Because they're getting a bit too good.
@@Appletank8 it's that they're too good, but also way too expensive and not every athletes could have one, which would put some at a disadvantage

Thank you so much :) it really means a lot!!
You put it well, this was one of the most exciting videos I've seen in a long time!
I never would have realized that Hyrule just casually has almost 2.5 Gs of gravity; that's crazy
no wonder links stamina bar goes so fast. also, where'd you get this info?
25:51 I'm curious if there's a difference between Botw Link and Totk Link doing this now? Other than the fact Botw Link can technically do the horse sprint(hold down D-Pad Down + repeatedly press B).
That’s what I thought Botw link would beat totk link in every running sport
Fr but he also didn’t attach a wing to his shield which would have made him jump higher which is something botw link can’t do.
I think that’s in TotK too, just reduced a little, but still faster than normal running
@BobSB129 I meant the horse whistle sprint in my comment, and that was a glitch they patched in between games. I played Totk day 1, and it didn't have it sadly.
@@Flarztheburningsoul yes I know what you were talking about, I think you misread my comment or don’t know about wing fusions or something

I find it really impressive how accurate they made Link’s movements (aside from fighting) to an above average human

I love this, everything about this. This is the kind of content I crave.
@@LeviathanTamer31 Still, using the spring shield should be fine.
Yeah, that should be fine.
Besides, all the athletes compete at the same location, so if Link gets to jump in a low gravity place the others should too
So how do we get 23 Olympic decathletes to Mars to test this
Spring shield!
So much work went into this, all the little details, the panning shots for the backgrounds, very well done, and funny too.
That last event was truly thrilling. I've always believed in Link 🙏
13:32 as someone from the US, this makes perfect sense to me. Thank you for your continued acknowledgement that the US will use literally anything but the metric system
I now believe all olympic running events should start with a random amount of time up to 5 minutes before the gun!
He still can't beat Ocarina of Time's running man though.

It's really cool how Link's abilities in game are in a realistic human range.
"For my American viewers that's 0.008 tons"
Well you just got a subscribe from this American that hates imperial because that was absolutely hilarious.
As a previous (distance) track athlete who loves Zelda, I think this is the most ‘me’ video I’ve ever watched. Thank you for putting so much effort into making this fairly realistic!
I find it very funny that the recommended video after this one for me is one titled “How many Heartless has Sora killed?” Really makes it look like I’ve entered the part of RUclips where unusual video game questions are answered.
"Where do Hyrule's rivers go?"

Hilarious that he would absolutely fail the Triathlon since he'd drown at the start, yet he'd probably CRUSH the biking and running sections if he was given the resources (if his expertise with the Master Cycle Zero is any indication of how he could control a non-motorized/magical bike)
Part two where meals, armor buffs, and weapon perks are allowed to see just how badly he'd dominate.
like seeing how althetes would do if performace drugs were legal. lets see the limit of human endeavor
Meal buff would just be like carbo-loading.
You could also write the Sheeka Stealth suit of as aerodynamic gear that for some reason only works at night, which i’m pretty sure isn’t banned from sprints.
to be fair in swimming atleast a suit is banned for being too good

It really can't be overstated how much of a formidable warrior link truly is. I've thought about this before. Even without magical powers or weapons, link is an exceptional athlete. We gotta suspend some disbelief on the running events because link is a machine of death who doesn't need to eat or drink or sweat. BUT all that aside, bro has a ton of courage, skills in melee and ranged weapons, experience with explosives, and acrobatic abilities most people only dream of.

I've never been this invested in the Olympics before
If Link wanted an even easier set of Gold medals he'd just enter into the power lifting events.
