- Today i answer the age old question of whether or not Link from Zelda Tears of the Kingdom could win the olympic decathlon. this is a real video

To be fair its a lame rule flipping would make the long jump approximately 21x cooler
But he did the throwing events with an ancient rotted hand so I think it balances out
@@Shemcat Ya, someone actually proved it works but it was deemed to dangerous. Similar to how swimmers are required to surface after 15 meters/yards from each wall so they black out less often.
imagine if bob beamon had just somersaulted in the air and went like 20 meters. we'd live in a better world
This could also be made up for by trying different angles for shotput. He might have done better.
Wouldn't TOTK Link technically participate in the paralympics because of the whole arm thing? It's basically a prosthetic.
was thinking about this... people with prosthetics participate in the olympics sometimes, but yeah loss of a limb qualifies link for the paralympics too. he would destroy at paraclimbing but he might not actually be physically impaired enough to enter that event (doesnt seem to have any reduced function in the prosthetic arm)
The thing with modern prosthetics is that they’re nowhere near as good as an actual human arm. Whereas Link’s prosthetic functions the same as a regular arm, if not better.

At minimum Link proved there's grounds for Hyrule to put him on the short list for who to send.

even the sages are slow AF honestly, I think it's funny that if you think about it Link is kinda like the saitama of his world, completely outclassing everyone, rivaling the Gods themselves in sheer physical might, hell he even has to help the gods take care of a evil godlike power that's been destroying the kingdom for centuries, millennium possibly. even goes around doing mundane tasks if not to help; then out of sheer boredom. Makes you wonder what link really would say if he could say more then "HYAH!".

Javelins are specifically designed for throwing. I think it would be fair to use a spear with the long throw upgrade for that event. Also, there is an item called a throwing spear...
To be fair, regulation javelins have been nerfed a few times because the WRs got to far.
What makes more sense is a long-throw discus, since he's throwing way more weight.

Okay to be fair though if Link, with his exact physical functionality, were to attempt high jump and pole vault with proper equipment and technique he would absolutely destroy ebery human who has ever lived.

Link outclasses everyone in combat, which is why fencing or boxing would be more fitting for him
he has the strength and skill to parry a massive horse-lion abomination carrying giant metal crushing weaponry and charging at him full-force, i dont think anyone is surviving a single punch from link

Granted that's not exactly a skill that transfers to other athletic events, but it's damnright superhuman. and then he can even JUMP from that position, multiple times.
He's also great at the high dive, that's an event somewhere innit? oh and snowboarding, he'd kill at that.
This is possibly my favourite video of the year. The time, effort, thought and attention to detail put in blew me away and the editing and narration made this not only extremely entertaining but genuinely compelling, I was on the edge of my figurative seat from how invested I was at points

You know what else? In the javelin throw, wouldn't the athletes be using aerodynamic throwing spears? If so, you probably could have allowed Link to use a throwing spear in that event, meaning it would have gone wayyy further.
Might even make up for only being able to count his regular jump for the Long Jump.
I love this, everything about this. This is the kind of content I crave.
To be fair, link is actively trying to persevere energy while keeping at a steady pace, so he could almost definitely run faster if he wanted to.

this actually seems like a pretty clever way to playtest the physics/movement of a game!
Fun fact, doing a front flip has indeed been done in a decathlon.
Some clever guy though that you could get further by doing a flip, as in more of your energy goes vertical instead of horizontal.
When he did it he failed once by stepping over the line, but the second time he did it he beat the world record.
He did not get a third jump because the next game the front flip got banned due to safety issues, understandable, you dont want your athletes to brake their necks in a jump now do we.
what would be most dangerous was probably the precedent and pressure it would put on other competitors to TRY and risk the move, knowing that theres a clear advantage in it, but the risk would have to be against their practiced movements, so its either break your neck probably or go in for second place at best. if it were a practiced technique then maybe it could have more legitimacy in the eyes of the event but youre right, its still risky in learning and execution anyhow
This does make me wonder if there's ever been a decathlete as inconsistent as Link but still do well, and whether or not this inconsistency could still give him the title as the world's best athlete
Short answer, no. Link is so wildly inconsistent and olympic decathletes are still near the top of human ability. Like you're talking about a superhuman in some events basically to be able to cleanup for some of the negative performances. This doesn't really happen.
If you're just asking about inconsitency in general, but on a much smaller level than link, maybe? I would start by looking for people who compete in one event at top level and then also did the decathalon. I'm sure there aren't many but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some.

Here’s my suggestion for pole vault. Attach a stabilizer to the end of a regulation sized pole for pole vault or as close as possible, then attach a basket or something to the end of it and launch link. That’s as close as you’ll get I thinm

Maybe, but his zonai arm functions completely the same as a regular arm (minus all the time stopping shenanigans), something that isn’t possible with modern prosthetics. For all intents and purposes, he still has both arms, one of them just looks a little weird

One of the cool things in botw and totk is that link (and the horses) tend to be on the upper limits of real human capacity whenever it doesn't effect gameplay negatively. Throw distance aside you will find that link scores slightly worse than most of the best athletes or world records.
And he did the 1500m run in heavy clothing on top of that! what a trooper!

Flipping is actually illegal in the long jump, someone tried it, and the athletics association banned it out of fear of injury

very well made video all around! I never knew that Link was this athletic, I thought he was just pretty athletic but was overall average to the normal person. NOPE, this man is one of the best physical specimens compared to even decathlon competitors! super cool vid :)

For the first trial, at the very least, Link is at a disadvantage agains the profesional athelets. One that you can actually fix. I'm talking about his gear. The athletes are actually using proper gear to improve their range of movement and for their feet, but Link is using something that, while comfortable for an adventure, it's not the best for sports. So maybe the sheikah's gear would be better? It's the closest I can think for Link to use in a race, as it is form fitting and with the closest I can think Link can use as sneakers. And maybe at night (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)? Jokes aside, I think it makes sense. It's not doping, it's just a dress that lets Link move better (in the night). Specially with how you let Link use a lid pot.
By the way, I wouldn't say the same about the zora armor in a swimming race. That's TOO speciallized gear, that lets Link climb a waterfall.
As for the polevault, seeing how Link CAN'T use a pole to impulse himself, and while I agree with the rockets... how about a shield jump with a bomb? It's nowhere as continuous as a rocket, it just gives a very big instant jump, a bit like the pole. And I kinda disagree with not letting Link use a lid pot for his high jump, that's his best technique for high jumps (for any kind of "normal" jump, really)
Love the video! The pole vaulting would be hard to calculate, i think you did good on that though. What if Hyrule had their own Olympics? I mean theres shield surfing, horse riding, skydiving.... Idk what all hyrulians can do, but it would be interesting to see what their Olympics games would be.

Decathlon is a way more prestigious event than Shotput or 1500m. It makes perfect sense Link would prioritize i over the other events if he can win it. Not all Gold medals are the same.
The reaction time thing in the later timed events doesn’t make sense since link has instant reaction time because of his flurry rushes and bullet time
This was very fun. You could probably use a Wing shield for the pole vault to better simulate that event with the higher shield jump!

You just need a no enhancement rito sword, and an octorok…
for the discus throw, maybe throwing a boomberang then using recall to stop it at its furthest point in order to measure it would have worked. there's also that circular yiga weapon! i don't remember the name or if it acts like a boomerang in the game but its somewhat comparable to a discus.
loved the video! even without the back flip in the jumps i still think link would have pulled through and at least got a medal, even if not gold
For reference, the 1500 meters World Record is 3:27.65 achieved by Cile Hocker this year, and the Shotput World Record is 23.56 meters achieved by Ryan Crouser in 2023. Link absolutely destroyed both of those events.

The Javelin throw should have been done with a throwing spear. That would have resulted in an even more insane score.

The reason for Link's lack of speed is because he's so short.
i can think of a certain italian plummer who could do even better, but the story wouldnt be quite as thriling, i guess it could be if we compared him to a certain blue hedgehog (so video idea would be a multi dicipline marathon like this, but instead of link vs. real atheletes, it would mario vs. sonic, and then compare with real atheletes)
