----Side Note: Nintendo EAD Could Not Have Made Tears Of The Kingdom

  • When Tears of the Kingdom released earlier this year, it managed to do one thing that Breath of the Wild hadn't after six years of existence: split the Zelda fanbase. Some players hadn't really clicked with BOTW and thought TOTK was a great improvement. A somewhat larger group loved BOTW and thought TOTK was a shallow retread of the same ideas. Either way, there's no doubt that the newer game is going to have controversy as part of its legacy for years to come.
    And all this raises some questions. Why did they make Tears of the Kingdom this way? Why is it so similar to Breath of the Wild, all the way down to reusing an entire world map? Have we left the period of experimentation behind and entered a new era of "Breath of the Wild-likes"?
    I can't be sure about any of this, but one thing I am sure of is this. Tears of the Kingdom is indicative of a massive change in Nintendo's approach to designing games, a change which has its roots in a corporate restructuring that occurred well before the release of the Switch in 2017.
    And in this Side Note, we'll explore how it happened and what it replaced.
    Thanks for watching, everybody!

      @@D1490-b1y Oh, I very much doubt that. Even if no one was actually unhappy with this particular video, there are plenty of people out there who would downvote a new video from me on principle.
      Either way, I don't consider myself entitled to doubt the evidence in front of me. If I see 2 dislikes, I assume 2 people didn't like the video. It's not impossible.

    Reading the description, I thought Botw DID split the fanbase though. To the point that before TOTK came out, I've heard a lot about the divide between "Classic Zelda fans" and fans of the new open air style. TOTK was just a further split, adding in fans who liked BOTW but thought they couldn't capture lightning in a bottle twice.
    Initially I didn't mind the reuse of the map or assets since I thought they could pull a Majora's Mask and make a completely unique game. But when the trailers came out and started talking about "deciding your own path" and "fueled by your imagination" I knew it was just gonna be the same kind of game as BOTW. More freedom and "creativity." Then the game got leaked and it ended up being more shrines, korok seeds and memory cutscenes.

      I realize that the sentence in the description could be a bit confusing, but the reason I don't think Breath of the Wild "split" the fanbase is that, as far as I can tell, the majority of older Zelda fans really liked the game. It also brought in lots of new fans, but it seemed that people like me who fundamentally didn't click with it were in the minority even among the old-timers.
      That's why I say in the video that I don't belong to either of the two large camps that seem to be emerging in the Zelda fanbase. Both of these camps are composed of people who like Breath of the Wild, and I don't.
      To put it another way, there are always going to be some people who like a game but dislike one of its sequels. If the ratio among fans of lovers to haters for any particular game is something like 90% to 10%, I wouldn't say that it "split" the fanbase, even though it technically does split it into two parts, because the overwhelming average response is positive. "Splitting" to me is more like the 60-40 range, and I believe that Tears of the Kingdom is a lot closer to that.
      I could be wrong, though.

    In all honesty, I wanted to like TOTK. I really, really did. Just like I really wanted to like BOTW. And I did get enjoyment out of BOTW, but I will always choose one of the older games, any of the older games, over these two because they had this SOUL. BOTW was great when it was polished and new. It was bright, it had new mechanics, it had these hooks that kept you invested even when you maybe didn't like other parts of it. Like, ultimately, the fact that it felt like such an empty world. Sure, it was HUGE, but I always felt so severely that it lacked the attention and atmosphere of the older games. The characters aren't as memorable, the story can literally be skipped, the lore isn't as in-depth, the dungeons were awful compared to what we've had, it was basically just a huge empty game where one or two locations were actually important and the rest was so useless cutting more than half of that game would've made no difference at all.
    And then TOTK came out, and I got it, and I tried it...and I disliked it so much I barely played for four hours. I resold the game basically new because I was just so BORED with this formula. I watched a playthrough on RUclips instead. It didn't change enough to not feel like I was just playing a BOTW DLC, and for $70. It still felt so soulless to me.
    Compare that to any of the older Zelda games I loved, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess (my all-time favorite) or Skyward Sword or Windwaker or ANY of them. Where they got away with the sort of open world feel, but didn't completely forsake the game's soul to get there. With these interesting, memorable stories. These great atmospheres. These crystal-clear images from the game that stand out so well in your head, then compare that to BOTW and TOTK and all I feel is drained. Tired. Sort of bored and empty.
    BOTW and TOTK may have been adventures, but they were not legends.

    So nintendo used to split up team divisions huh? Could this be why modern day nintendo kind of sucks now? This would explain why most games seems to be more play it safe now. Instead of taking a chance on being too different like the older games did.

    breath of the wild was already desperately trying to fit in the zelda magic, but tears of the kingdom went all out like REMEMBER WHEN THIS THING WAS A THING IN THE OLDER ZELDAS? LOOK, ITS RIGHT HERE, AS A ITEM, AND MAYBE A BRIEF REFERENCE WITH NO REAL REASON TO EXIST IN THE STORY.
    so if you played the games before all they do is like ''look we're still zelda''. but for new players, it exists in the world of the wild. and thats it really.
    the story of these games are lukewarm at best and it failed to deliver the zelda magic.
    both botw and totk are amazing games, but if ubisoft came up with this idea. and just called it ''naomi's awakening'' or whatever and it had the precise same gameplay without a zelda look, it would still be well received, minus the 10/10 a zelda game should receive by the public.
    so a 8.3 right?

    The biggest problem with nu-Zelda is that it's overall quite empty once you take everything into account. The lore, characters, story, dungeons, and music are all downgrades compared to the Zelda greats of the past. You covered much of this already, but it bears repeating, the games - for all their scale and hype - add up to giant collect-a-thons without the same thematic soul, depth, or character as older games.
    The universe Lore was pretty much gimped and "reset" so Nintendo could "cherry pick" fanservice elements from past games without having to worry about connect the dots for fans - but it's ultimately in service to little but bland consumerism. The stories lack depth and urgency, and None of the characters even come close to having an Arc like Midna from TP (a 17 year old game). The milquetoast "Dungeons" (including BOTW's 4 candy-coated Ganon clones) are the biggest flaw with nu-Zelda and ultimately why I reject it. And finally, despite living in the Era of Orchestration - I can't remember a single solitary nu-Zelda music track, which is Unforgivable. I feel no soul in nu-Zelda, I hear no grand themes, and I see no complex/atmospheric dungeons... All I can feel is my wallet being molested by Nintendo thanks to their post-BOTW greed.
    TOTK is Glorified BOTW DLC - and it was made that way for a very specific reason - so Nintendo could make as much bank as possible for as little WORK as possible before the brakes fall off every nation's economy in 2024/2025. 2020's global insanity was much more damaging than most people realize. TOTK is Nintendo playing it "insultingly safe" all for the money, and it really shows.

      As someone who as a kid remembers buying the original Nintendo entertainment system, I’ve played every Zelda game.
      I am constantly blown away by how good breath of the wild is.
      And I am even more blown away by tears of the kingdom, which I play almost every night with my daughters since launch.

    This was reported last year, but it got announced they are building a second complex close to their current headquaters. It is expected to be completed by 2028 though.

      @cinnamonnoir2487  11 месяцев назад

      Unless they also announced that they're creating a new development team to occupy that space, that doesn't really have much to do with what I'm talking about here. And to be frank, I don't know why they'd do that. It's been less than a decade since they integrated all the software divisions, and it seems to have worked out for them so far. They have no reason to reverse course on that decision.

    • @Leee275
      @Leee275 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@cinnamonnoir2487 It is supposed to be a new Development Centre so I thought it was worth bringing up. So while yes it might not really be necessary for 1st Party games, a new building for "development" could mean lots of things. So if it is about game development then I think it has to do with the video, if it isn't, then it could answer your question as to why they would do that.
      According to recent news they are evolving into a full-blown entertainment company so the construction of a new division can't be a coincidence, as also seen with the Mario movie. So if the complex is related to anything to entertainment that isn't videogames then I think you can already start theorizing as to why they pulled this move.

    Its not botw 2 its botw 1.5. And yeah i tried to get over the same map thing but couldnt it just ruined the experience for me. The newness of botw and exploration is what made it so fun. Even storywise it barely feels like a sequel since so much of the game pretends like the previous game never happened which was really disappointing was hoping we'd at least get some closure on things zelda and links love life, orgins of calamity ganon, maybe a little light on the timeline but that game just made it even more confusing. The divine beast and guardians and all the shekiah technology just disappears without a trace very little closure to anything that happened in the previous game.

      It's actually pretty funny how closely Tears of the Kingdom resembles Super Mario Galaxy 2. Both games started as expansion packs for games which had previously revolutionized their respective series, and were later turned into separate games when the development team had generated enough ideas to justify it. Both games retcon the ending of the previous game and tell essentially the same story from scratch, which isn't a very prominent story in any case. Both games are beloved by people who enjoy the more technical and mechanical aspects of Nintendo games and considered inferior to their predecessors by people who care more about story and atmosphere.
      Plus both games sold extremely well, but I don't think either one will outsell the original it's based on.

    • @marioandultrachap
      @marioandultrachap 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@cinnamonnoir2487 yeah I'm definitely not a fan of that either or really the galaxy games in general thought 64 and sunshine were much better. Galaxy games are entertaining but didn't have the same depth of fun of those games. But Super mario galaxy 2 is a least a little more forgiving seeing that it only took 2.5 years after the first game instead of 6 and it gave more of the feel of an expansion (at least in my eyes) rather than continuation from the start and it kind of set that tone already at the start of the game. So my expectations weren't as high for this game plus I didn't care for galaxy 1 all that much anyways so I wasn't expecting the sequel to be that much better.
      As for Totk it took 6 years to developed marketed as full sequel to what i thought was a fantastic game and most of its story was kept secret which set some false expectations. And seeing how botw story was a little underwhelming but definitely showed plenty of potential to be expanded upon in a sequel I really believed they would knock it out of the park storywise even if they were using the same map. But it seemed to fail in all categories. How people are praising this game so much? I'll never understand. I don't hate the game but it's far from a masterpiece.

    Disney is where it is now because it expanded too much and thought far left leaning driven content would pay the bills. I agree competition is a good thing and monoplies lead to stagnation, but so far Nintendo is MILES ahead of other mainstream gaming compines with what theyve been producing. I dont ever see them putting out bad games and getting to political.
