Nintendo CEO definitely commented a while back that the path that Microsoft and Sony focusing on High Fidelity as well as higher frame rates is not a sustainable model for developing video games, and it looks like this could be actually coming true with this generation of consoles, which will probably cost half a billion dollars to create new games.

When a game of that type of budget gets put out and it fails to sell well, it could actually mean the end of that studio, even if the game was actually good. That’s gotta feel like walking on a tightrope if you’re just a typical developer just trying to make ends meet.

Not that I know anything about game development but with current graphical master pieces like Horizon, we kinda got to where we need....now we just need the machines to put out that at 4k/60FPS and all of a sudden devs have it a lot of free time to focus on other things, plus with toolkits advancing and stuff, these things will eventually become the standard! What I am saying is, the focus on performance + fidelity isn't the issue, it's that our hardware isn't capable enough, so either you need really great engineers who cost a lot or beefy hardware which is yet to be born (ps6? maybe).

I'd call this console generation the "corporate generation", where the gaming industry as a whole has been tainted by the corporate mindset. Pretty much the majority of games, that aren't made by indie developers, have had every decision around them based off the demands of shareholders screaming "LINE GO UP!!!". The console environment feels like purgatory, as Nintendo is the only one in that hemisphere actually pumping out shit that's worth a damn, meanwhile Sony and Microsoft are trying to figure out more ways to convince people to fork over 600 for their newest consoles as well as another at least $60 for online multiplayer (but wait, if u spend $60 dollars we'll let you play this entire catalog of games, most of which are either horrible and not worth your time or simply here on borrowed time). Games that don't come out of the factory halfway finished and full of microtransactions are the biggest breath of fresh air nowadays. Game conferences, which used to be awesome can now be summed up to sitting in front of a livestream with a bingo card in your hands ready to cross out the boxes for when they use buzzwords like, "cutting edge", "innovation", "like never before", "diversity", "inclusiveness", "industry leading figures", revealing shitloads of DLC for already existing games, revealing new games that actually look cool with 30 second teasers, showing actual trailers for games that look terrible. Rockstar literally went from being the company that would pump out games of all kinds to releasing a new game once in a centennial period and Blizzard is full of creeps and sexual predators. We literally had to beg Valve to start making games again

Nobody ever brings up the gyroscope and it’s really frustrating. It’s been in PlayStation controllers since the ps3 and it’s literally the second best way to aim on console beside ir camera aiming from the Wii. Barely any games take advantage of it 🤦‍♂️.

I thought the 8th gen was a joke. Xbox in particular but also PS4. They both had literally no games and felt more like PS3.5 and Xbox 360 pro, or something. PS4 got it together and got a handfull of great exclusives eventually. But at launch and during the first years both consoles got a lot of "remasters" of 2-4 year old games from last gen wich was the same game with slightly higer resolutions. And the annually Fifa, Cod, obligatory car/racing game etc.
We used to dunk on Xbox back in the day for having no exclusives compared to the PS2. Well the original Xbox had more exclusives than PS4 and 5 combined.
I think Witcher 3 And Assassins Creed Unity (despite the bugs) single handedly saved the entire generation because they were both impressive in their own ways and was something previous gen would have been incapable of without some hefty downgrades, which garnered a lot of hype and made people move on from 7th gen.
The last few years of the 8th gen with their pro versions and some good and uniqe titles like God of War and Ghost of Tsushima should have been the launch of that generation.
Despite probably not going to buy a 9th gen console myself I was excited for what the future would hold for gaming and consoles after the dissapointment which was 8th gen. I thought it possibly couldn't get any worse. But lo and behold, the same complacency from the previous gen got ramped up to 11.
I was hoping for a rejuvenation of the 6th or 7th gen era energy. It seemed like that at first. But what we got in the end was the console version of upgrading your PC to run games on Ultra instead of High settings. All fine and dandy on its own. But not very exciting. Its still the same old with marginally prettier graphics.
There is nothing inherently wrong with consoles and current gen hardware itself. It's a great value option vs PC for people who just want to sit down and game. But I think that the concept of consoles how they used to be are dead. They are more or less a budget PC with a proprietary OS now. And we will never see the leaps between consoles and the uniqueness and differences between various consoles like we used to.
Just like there was a bunch of different PC competitors in the 70's and 80's its all just MAC and Windows now. I think Consoles are going the same way. It will become more and more about the brand and which ecosystem you are tied to. As both consoles since the 8th gen. But already back in the 7th gen used many of the same parts and components. beneath their shell they are almost the same. And the barely few exclusives comes more down to arbitrary restrictions than anything else, to a greater degree than before. We need to view things different. The era of "generations" is over. Just like there are no "generations" on PC, only more RAM or better CPU.
The main problem however as you mentioned in the video isn't even just the empty promises. But the fact that these technical upgrades doesen't bring anything truly innovating or meaningful to the table anymore (for the most part). And that there are a lot of destructive forces within gaming and entertainment which stifles creativity at the moment. It's not just the greedy excecutives and shady business parctises. But oportunists which doesen't care about games as art or entertainment. But want to use it as their personal platform for whatever, before leaching onto the next "big thing" for attention.

I think GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 also helped save the 8th generation of consoles. GTA V on PS3 and Xbox 360 felt like it was being held back by the hardware of those consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One versions felt like the "definitive" console versions of GTA V. Red Dead Redemption 2 felt like it truly utilised the power of those consoles because of the insane level of detail that game had.

Also it took the PS4 7+ years to sell 117 million consoles and the expectation that 117 million people were supposed to switch over in less than 4 years is absolutely absurd. Another thing, the PS5 has not had a significant price cut like the PS4 did and it’s only about 2 and 1/2 million away from the PS4 if we are comparing timelines.

@@sumomaster5585 there’s no market indicator that they wouldn’t go back to PlayStation. The stats just aren’t there. If you have a PlayStation 4 the next logical step is not to go to PC. Lastly, the biggest upcoming game for probably the next 10 years GTA 6 will not launch the same day as the consoles and will not be on last gen. I bring up these 3 games because they are the real moves and have no distinct advantage or availability on PC. The appeal of consoles is accessibility and ease of use. They’ve already sold 62 million without a GTA 6 or a Wolverine game, you think that won’t be enough when if you compare the lifetime of PS4 to PS5, the PS5 is about 2 million behind and that’s with a global pandemic and not a substantial price cut as of YET.

As someone that's been a console gamer since birth, it's really begun to be more and more depressing just seeing how much gaming has grown to be such a shell of its former self. You used to have plenty of imaginitive ganes and plenty of fun experiences with all of these consoles and handhelds, all the while having plenty of reasons to go for a lot of these systems ranging from legit exclusives to having free online play for the majority of them.
Now outside of Nintendo, all you get are titles from two of the three first party companies having exclusives that are mostly always realistic looking instead of having varied art styles, live service games up the wazoo just set to expire at any given time, some of not most third party companies being more focused on trying to monetize their games as much as possible by overselling too much DLC or having different types of battle passes, AND many of them just making owning a console pointless by making the one thing that matters to them their EXCLUSIVES, available on either another competitor's system or print them on PC.
All that on top of locking online play behind increasingly expensive subscription requirements, making games lost media by closing down the only means of buying them, implementing BS from the real world into the one means of escaping from that BS, gaming itself becoming more and more expensive with more titles costing seventy dollars now AND making physical releases less plentiful overtime... It's just all too freakin' much man!
So much if this is just too much to bear and every passing day that continues on it just makes me wish i had the know how to make a time machine or somwthing so I could go back in time to the days when NONE of this overpoliticalized, overly monetized BS was so freaking prevalent.

Gaming shouldn't hyper focus on graphics, ray tracing & 4k resolutions. What matters more to me is stuff like physics effects, rag doll effects, using creative art styles, having different gameplay modes, satisfying gameplay mechanics, damage effects and interactive environments. Single player modes and offline modes. Current games focus way too much on graphical nitpicking that they don't realize they are making a terrible game. It's like they've forgotten players enjoy aspects that make games fun? Low poly graphics can work too, if they understand what they're doing. I seriously don't know why gaming had to fall into this rut that we are now in..?
    Also:
    {We have seen that even if companies delay games, it isn't improving the quality of games being released. Which is a sign there is a MUCH DEEPER issue going on with modern games. No excuses, devs used to make great games with much less and they would have given anything to have certain capabilities to utilize that are available today. It just takes actual passion, focus & talent to make great games. Sidenote: It's so crazy how many people are still supporting super mega rich companies putting out unacceptable products.. i don't understand certain people. I don't understand how certain companies can be messing up so badly. It's frustrating that other passionate people are not allowed to make a version of a type of game that we used to have but no longer get anymore.. Yet these huge companies get full control over if an unused game IP gets made & they do everything they can so no other versions of a game idea will ever come out. Even if there's a huge fan base around certain ideas and there's a ton of passionate devs out there dying to make a version of a certain video game idea.. that frustrates me beyond belief}

You forgot to mention that in the PS4/PS5 & XOne/ XSeries generation we have free2play games for the first time that you can play without a PS Plus or Xbox Gold account (COD WarZone & Fortnite).
This has even led to some people just buying the console and then no more software. The PS4 & PS5 may have sold better than their Xbox counterparts, but that doesn't mean that more software is sold. There is also a quarter of gamers who buy a console just for FIFA Soccer or the other EA or 2K sports games.
The game manufacturers have miscalculated and gambled badly when they make exclusive deals.
Two examples: Street Fighter 4 came out on 3DS, PS3, PC & X360 in 2009. All versions of Street Fighter IV have sold over 9 million units across all platforms.
For Street Fighter 5, Sony made an exclusive console deal with Capcom in 2016, so there were only 2 versions: PS4 & PC. As of December 2023, Street Fighter V has sold 7.4 million units.
the same goes for Final Fantasy VII Remake/ Intergrade. PC, PS4 &PS5 only 7 million sold by September 2023, compare to the 180 million PS4 & PS5 users, not even counting PC users.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth failed to meet Square Enix's sales expectations, with no sales numbers shared to date.
By May 2022, Final Fantasy XV (PC, PS4 & XOne) had sold ten million units worldwide across all versions, making it one of the best-selling Final Fantasy games of all time.

I remember when I bought a new PS3 two days after the PS4 was revealed (I didn't want to miss out the library), and a few months later, I concluded I don't need higher graphical fidelity... Same reason I was very hyped when Nintendo revealed the Switch.
I think publishers don't want to make AAA games run at 4K resolution and 120fps (that's what the newest consoles can run at!!!) because they know most people won't care. Instead it's making the game looking as realistic as possible... While not doing that not only means achieving higher resolution and framerate, it also means saving resources to other meaningful departments.
I'm just thankful indies exist. And probably the highest budget non-Nintendo game I loved playing recently was Psychonauts 2. Visuals as mesmerizing as excellent gameplay, and wonderful story and lore.

To be completely honest the whole 8th generation was a complete disaster starting from launch. While GPU power, RAM amount performance was great and at the same time CPU power was mediocre (AMD 8 core CPU clocked on 1.6-2 Ghz using piledriver architecture which's a complete disaster itself). Plus whole debacle with Watch Dogs with tuned graphics down on launch just because consoles weren't able to properly run tells a lot.
7th gen is in weird place. They had a very strong CPU power (Xbox with 3C/6T IBM processor, Sony with 2C/8SPU) with limited amount RAM (512Mb for both only Sony had 256/256 for both RAM and VRAM) and GPU that was before Nvidia 8xxx series that was already 2x performance for both consoles. And games were so pushing that it was very common to dip down to 10-15 FPS in some titles.
What's happened is that around 2008-2012 companies found common formulas and slowly started to control developers and creative input. And change of generation that moved from computer nerds to a way more common geeks and even normies made a huge shift of how games and software in general are creating and instead of games that was created by a very passionate and technically minded team is slowly moved to manufactured and formulaic games that possess quality as polished, but bland experience.
9th gen is just a continuation of these trends and because how passionate gamers in general are they feel this anger and desperately try to blame them and calling all names instead of imply understanding that they f**ked up. And because of this they pander casual audience and kids as they're more agreeable and easier to scam, but once they grow up or simply lose interest it becoming a wasteland that devoured of hardcore audience that actually keep these games alive. And until a huge crisis or change of trends nothing will change unfortunately.

The only issue with your assessment here is that Family games are a problem. Fact is video games like any other hobby rely on younger generations to get into continuously. To start with overly complex "Mental Stack" games would turn young people off of games before they could develop a love for them. Every human generation deserves their NES moments whether it comes from Nintendo, Sony or XBOX. The problem with the modern era is even games that are supposed to be geared just for adults have been either watered down game play wise or radicalized story wise. Everything in the "Mature" sector of video games is made exclusively for journalist and those games are the only one that get consistent recognition like The Last of Us II.

It's not that family games are the problem but how a lot of games are very watered down in general. I even remember how Wii was claimed as failure but in the end received the biggest selling as it catered to casual audience and nobody cared as it didn't hurt anyone. On 6th and 7th gen even casual games had a surprisingly deep mechanics and brilliantly did what they were supposed (PopCap catalog, The Sims series until 4 are great examples). And even popular franchises like Halo or, GTA to some extent had a lot of depth and there's a reason why even now they has popular fanbase.
While we need these games, but there's a very unhealthy balance. With "Mature" it's not just how they're watered down, but a lot of them tries to be provocative while in reality being just an ideological propaganda. The Last of Us II is perfect example of this as it desperately tries to be akin to The Sopranos of how bad and irrational human nature but in the reality The Sopranos when it comes to writing would demolish The Last of Us II in every imaginable way and only expose just how bas latter is. Games like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, MGS2, Silent Hill 2 in early 00 late 00s-early 10s games like GTA 4, Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age Origins, Batman: Arkham show just how you can be mature without doing political pandering even if some of them can have their own agenda. About gameplay it's already explained as being watered down.

For me personally, I just have a wireless keyboard and mouse for specific situations where they might be needed and I stick to the regular windows 10 UI and don't have any issues. Once I'm in a game I just use a remote. The UI isn't as flashy as a console's, but it gets the job done. I click on a game and it launches the game. Fair assessment that nails all the issues without the sensationalism. Especially how the face of the industry has changed a great deal, but gamers really haven't. There's a lot of people in the industry who want to force gamers to change rather than adapting to market demand. Nintendo meanwhile does so well because they still embrace that old school philosophy of game design while keeping things innovative. As for hardware constraints being a positive, I've maintained for a while now that the Series S is this generation's best (non-Nintendo) console. It's $300 and offers a perfectly acceptable experience. There's no shortage of devs though who complain about it though. While I can appreciate the challenge of getting games to run on limited hardware, I think a lot of devs today just don't know how to optimize. Either relying on brute force or ML upscaling to compensate. Even on PC, you'll see a lot of these AAA games chugging on hardware that should be able to run them no problem. If Saber Interactive can get Witcher 3 running decently on the Switch, you have no excuse.

Watch a new Madden or COD comes out with Loot Boxes and they’ll make over a million on the first week from them. If you took all the major release in gaming the past 4 years; Tekken, Call of Duty, Mortal Kombat, Spider man, Avengers, Mario, God of War, those games put out terrible during the first few weeks. Logically, I know that it's technically still the old Sony Vs. Microsoft Vs. Nintendo deal from gens 6 through 8 and then the Steam Deck isn't really in the same ball-park as then, but it just feels like Nintendo and Valve are tag-teaming Sony and Microsoft and winning

Yeah, I'm focusing on games that you can't play anywhere else. So even Final Fantasy XVI will be off that list soon.

@@criticalpixelsmy opinion is that if it came out in pc and ps5 it should still be considered an exclusive since the pc market is much smaller compared to the console market.

back in the day, any advances were actually really significant. once we hit 3d it was just incremental graphics upgrades with only real significant changes being any special "gimmicks" a given machine might have. like adding 4 players, online gaming, touch screen, motion controls, vr

I actually think gaming has advanced a lot. There just isn't a ton of games because it takes too long.
I assume this generation will last into next gen with cross gen. This is the first gen where I feel like I shouldn't have to upgrade next gen and just hold onto my series x until I can't play new games.
Even last gen with the ps4, I didn't feel like things could get much better. But honestly, load times, map sizes, and graphics have gone up quite a bit.
To me, I feel like halo infinite and need for speed unbound are the perfect examples of next gen games.
At first they seem like normal games as they were before. But halo infinite is massive with adding extra mobility with the grapple hook. Exploring locations instead of just being funneled from one location to the next.
Need for speed unbound extra graphics around your vehicle and dragging behind you. first time having npcs in the map. Other drivers flash their lights at you if they saw a cop.
I think probably the ps5 pro will advertise better next gen games. They just haven't gotten to it yet. Also the next xbox sounds like it's just around the corner.
It seems weird because really this gen is just starting. We will most likely see gens last longer and go into other gens. Seems bad for next gen. But over all good for consumers that can't or don't want to upgrade yet.

The issue is that customers and video game companies need to accept that there is nothing new that a video game system can do; This isn't a bad issue, let me explain
Video games today need to be more about extravagant exploration, massive open worlds, and good stories; It's impossible to make a similar transition such as Sega Genesis to PlayStation One
This is why I play games on a gaming laptop, because I get everything that's realistically possible with the modern world and that is: Ultra 4K graphics, 60 frames per second, very slow loading times, mods just in case I want extra entertainment, and I get to enjoy games from PlayStation and Xbox as well as almost every game that's been made

One of the things I love about PC Gaming is that the platform isn’t locked down to just one storefront. Developers and Publishers can create their own storefront and not have to censor their game’s content to appease Steam’s employees whenever that Valve employee is having a very bad day

Ironically, Steam released IMO one of the greatest consoles we had in a while that is the Steam Deck, in this generation that was supposed to be dominated by the PS5 and XBox. For this reason, it has become my favourite generation because the lack of variety on console games introduced me to PC games.

Im one of those gamers who's yet to upgrade to PS5. Right now, Wukong and Dragon's Dogma 2 are the only next gen exclusives I want to really play but I can wait. I mostly buy discount games anyway. Aside from that, I've got a backlog of about 20ish games. I know that's nothing compared to other backlogs but its a lot for me considering they're mostly big games like Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, AC Odyssey, Valhalla, etc. I got over FOMO years ago so I'm good with it.

7th gen was peak gaming. We'll never see anything like it ever again. Games were made better when they were sold with the intention of getting one big return on launch day. Now that we have gamepass and playstation plus, games are made for what I like to call "infinite revenue". They purposely design games as a service where they still get money years after it's initial release. Completely skimping on the quality and fun aspect.
Before games were a service, they genuinely had to make the game GOOD. Fun, engaging, something that made people say "Yeah I'm waiting till 12am to get it". Nowadays that's hardly ever the case. Greed has officially ruined the industry. It's not coming back. The big wigs and executives with their million dollar homes, 3 cars, and 2 boats decided that they don't get enough money, so they want more and this is how they do it.
