They were ready to go as far as using Kinect to determine how many people were in front of TV, and then potentially charging you extra if you had friends over to stream a movie or watch a PPV.
Im fortunate enough to have owned every PlayStation and Xbox and I love them all. I love my old car too and I love my toaster but I have no love for any corporation and only a fool should. Corporate values should be shunned so it’s always GREAT to see a corporate stooge like Don royally screw up. Sets an excellent example for kids to see what butt heads they all are😁
I was a solid 360 player for that entire generation. Remember watching that conference. I went from being excited about the Xbox one to knowing I was 100% buying a PS4 by the end of it.
Same here bro. Doesn't matter what ecosystem. I always go for the reasonable choice. Xb360 had own exclusives and better gaming performance. But lost from that point on so shifted to ps4 and now to ps5pro if its worth it.
I switched from the 360 to ps3 ( when the last of us came out) then stayed on PlayStation until about 6 months ago, because I’m sick of the remasters, the ugly female woke characters that have plagued Sonys games recently and because their pride flags on the store. Plus I wanted to play halo infinite. It appears I made the right choice because I liked the look of a lot of the Xbox console exclusives on display at their recent showcase, while Sony continues to release woke trash like concord. Plus gamepass offers more value- never remain loyal to any company go to the one that offers you the best value at that time.
me too. I got my first own console (OG xbox) and then 3 years after launch i finally got the 360 (we needed to safe money) This was my absolute favorite. But when the whole hype about the Xbox died, i simply switched over to PC and never regret it. I now also have a old used Xbox one to play Multiplayer games and old games like Injustice 2, Modern Warfare 2 etc. but thats it. There is no reason to buy an xbox if it doesn thave any cool exclusive titles. I would rather buy a playstation / nintendo Switch for play all the nice titles it has.

The Xbox One launch is up there with the absolute worst business decisions ever made. No one has lost a tech war so quickly as they did and it was literally hand wrapped, on a silver platter with roses and wine.
Xbox series s was a nice launch, especially after the awful digital xbone. Can't believe people paid more for a ps5 than a pc before it restocked years later. With portable pc hybrids, both series are obsolete.
@sangan3202 it's not. People are well behind if still saying gaming is dead (buggy spiderman 2 and bastardized ff7 rebirth that made me celebrate goofy crisis core, with mario unlimited until spring 2024 was pretty bad, though wonder was a breath of fresh air). If uninitiated, a ton of console games just went on sale, and next week there's gonna be rocket knight re-sparked that was nice enough to do an intro sale everywhere. I also enjoyed MLB the show 24 on game pass, and college football 25 should be fun if they do better than madden. Tomba, astrobot, gori, and shadow of the ninja reborn are a few more fun upcoming games too. Then of course pc handhelds/hybrids for free demos not on console (ps plus premium was bs but at least they're gonna add vr2 games outside of demos, and the pc adapter may be something for those who want to use PC albeit limited, as meta quest has so much software despite needing accessories). Definitely something for everyone, though you can't encourage predatory purchases like those $100 games with all the crazy season add-ons, or multiversus doing bs for extra payment, ban iron giant from unranked or censoring velma's police call. I could go on about more, but gaming made a good turnaround. There's still some bad stuff like the legend of heroes trails through daybreak I mocked, but I did have fun with the misty battlefield (physical includes cool art and sound) and wargroove 2. Sales do help also, as I could tolerate dragon quest infinity strash's limitations as I do like the battles and playing as multiple characters.
@dragoe7441 what did they do? I liked the triple pack with virtua cop, virtual fighter 2 and Daytona USA. Do admit sonic R was bad outside the music lol terrible controls outside tales but a fan remastered it.
It's honestly pretty incredible that literally one dude managed to destroy all the credibility that Xbox built up with the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 in the past 12 years and left a bad taste for the Xbox brand that has still yet to recover from fully even today in only one Hour and a Half showcase and a few interviews

Basically the same now as Mech Assault, Gears of War, Fable, Perfect Dark, Viva Pinata, Banjo-Kazooie... but Paramount is licensed to make a show with the same name.
You can only blame Don for so long. Phil had a decade to really make Xbox competitive. Sony was able to rebound from the early PS3 blunder. Nintendo went from their worst selling (Wii U) to their best selling console (switch) in one generation. I have a series X only for back compatibility this generation.
It's a shame, really. I used to have an X1X, but currently only have a PS5. The Series X is a pretty amazing system, but to this day, nothing really gave me an excuse to buy one. It's mind-boggling when you think how much money and resources this company has available.
@bellissimo4520 why get rid of it lmao that's just dumb. I have both and my pc. And then all my retro consoles. But my series x I use to play backwards compatible games on
@@TheScrubmuffin69 I got rid of the X1X because it won't play new games that require the Series S/X hardware. It's fine if you like to have a whole collection of consoles, but not everybody does.
With the way Sony has been lately, I think I’ll be skipping both Xbox and PlayStation when their next generations start. It’s gonna be PC and Nintendo only for me!
The original pitch for Xbox One was truly one of the most dystopian Big Brother devices though. They were planning on using the Kinect camera to verify the person playing the game was the authorized user who purchased the license.
I still cant believe he said that. He couldnt believe it either. When Keighley says "Thats your message? stick with 360?" you can see it in Dons beady little eyes he knew he said a dum dum.

@@ShortManletyeah I mean there's not much else you can say other than ' just don't buy anything." that's basically what he was saying. The game pass is superior than PlayStation Plus. The landscape of gaming has completely changed. A lot of things that were relevant in the 2000s are slowly becoming obsolete. But at least things don't always need to be online that was a horrible decision that ultimately crippled the Xbox.
To be fair, Sony and Nintendo are also bad and PC gaming scene is also kinda going the same way. If you hate this kind of future, only piracy and GOG are your options.
That idiot destroyed the brand over 10 years ago and Xbox still is doing idiotic things at the moment. Sucks that the 360 was their last great console even after that whole RROD fiasco

I was a loyal XBox fanboy back in the 360 days. I'll never forget the sheer confusion I felt watching Microsoft destory years of brand reputation in just one press conference with the XBO launch. It really like Microsoft was taking their hardcore gamers for granted, and genuinely believed we'd be too stupid to notice all the BS they were planning on dumping on us for the new generation. And to their surprise many of us switched sides and never looked back, Microsoft has definitely paid severely for that mistake but i do hope Xbox does make a comeback as the console space is in desperate need for real competition.
I remember the showcase happening while I was working. A coworker of mine was a dyed in the wool Xbox fanboy (he freely admitted it), and I popped in the break room and saw him watching it - the look of absolute sorrow etched into his face. I asked how it was and what they’d said, and he paused it, took a deep breath, and said “….I have…I have to get one…they have Halo and I love Halo…” his voice shaking with rage and sadness. A couple days later after Sony nuked MS from orbit with a 5 second spot on game sharing, he asked me what games were good on PlayStation. I don’t work there anymore, and it’s been 10 years, but I know for a fact he’s not touched an Xbox since
TBF, there were early rumors of the PS4 doing the same stuff. However, after the #dealwithit fiasco and initial Xone announcement, in May (2013). Sony probably realized none of that was a good idea.

As much as I don't like Xbox both as a company and a console, we kinda need them to stay in the console market. Otherwise that just gives Sony the top spot with no competition, because Nintendo have said since the says of the Wii that they see themselves as a companion console not a competitor.
This I've been wanting them to recover for quite a while now to force Sony to try harder to make good games more often (like in the PS3 era), but after seeing what they did to Tango and all of those studios lately, it's hard to get your hopes up If they do end up leaving the hardware industry I hope someone else joins in their place at least
@@marcoalves9029 Either that or more likely Nintendo will become more of a competitor as they will get more people buying their product especially with Switch 2 coming out soon. I still see Playstation/Sony staying number 1 cause even though they have not released much exclusive games with the PS5 generation (Most Likely due to how long it takes to create games now) you know that Sony is gonna drop a bunch of exclusive titles to help sell PS5 pro version along with GTA 6 considering the vast majority of the market share is dominated by Sony. Overall I dont really see Nintendo ever becoming Number 1 in a very long time and if they do then it will be because Sony got complacement or pulled a Microsoft but no doubt when Nintendo closes that gap it will absolutely push Sony and lit a fire in them to cause them to take the generations more seriously.
@@ToxicDarkLord depends how you define "number 1", I suppose Xbox makes the most money from games in this genetation. PlayStation has the higher reviewed games in this generation. Switch has the most console sales of this generation (and 3rd in history).
@@safebox36 I just think it is a combination of all three that places PlayStation at N1 as the excel pretty well in all departments that makes them a robust platform cause of their large consumer base, games, IPS, first party studios which is why I tend to put them at N1. Also I do criticize them for not releasing more exclusive games for PS5 but considering how long it takes to make triple AAA quality games is now 5+ to make in development so I reckon with the PS5 pro coming out soon you will see more exclusive games get released to boost the pro sales. Nintendo I used to place third with the Nintendo Wii because I always felt it was niche platform and they had a lack of third party games on their and due to the WiiU being a bomb it really set them back a long time until the Switch came out and since the switch they have rebuilt their reputation and are releasing lots of exclusive games and are now importing third party games and I see the switch 2 continuing this trend and momentum. Overall I do see the top two being Sony and Nintendo and Microsoft being a distant third now.
Xbox fans need to quit shifting blame. Phil has had over a decade to right the path and continually fucks the brand over. Why does everyone still pretend like he isn't THE problem that Xbox needs to address?
Phil is another reminder that suits do not and will never care about giving quality to the end costumer, no matter how "chill" and "relatable" they try to present themselves as.
Xbox 360 was incredible before Kinect, if they kept investing in good IPs it could have paid off. Three Gears of War games in the same generation, two numbered Forza games and Forza Horizon, XBLA...It even had some great JRPGs, Eternal Sonata is beautiful. I don't demonize Kinect because it was appealing to casuals, but it seems like everything started to fall apart from there.
4 Gears of War games on 360. Eternal Sonata was pretty bad, but Blue Dragon and Star Ocean 4 were worse, Lost Odyssey is significantly better. 360 also had huge LAN support for basically every game until near the end. Games like Dead Island and Dead Space 3 don't have LAN. Music player functionality while playing games and it paused for game cutscenes. Media Center functions. VGA cable. First time a console had access to game demos via internet, and many games had demos. XBLA games having mandatory trials/demo. Games were restricted to 10MB for a game update. Games didn't need to be installed until late GTA5, Far Cry 4 years unlike PS3 games often needing an install. Limited backwards compatibility. Biggest faults of the 360 were proprietary HDDs and memory cards, early game cases digging a ring into discs, one of the worst/sloppy D-pads, the loud disc drive at full speed, the failing consoles for 4ish years until the S model appeared. Big failings: HD-DVD, making paid themes worthless after console UI updates (Blades, then Xbox Avatars, then Metro). XNA games not working after updates. Wireless microphone, Nickel batteries, Kinect, Wireless wired steering wheel needing batteries, early models didn't have HDMI, and were restricted to composite, component, VGA.
It feels like getting their main developers to all make Kinect games was a big part of the problem. They could have just had someone else develop some simple party games and still got that casual audience. They tried to market Kinect to both and it just wasn't realistic.
If they had released the One X and One S from the get go and sold an SKU of both without the Kinect and also DID NOT even mention the reselling/sharing of disc/always online games they would have completely owned the generation. But ofcourse Microsoft and Xbox can't fucking do anything right the first time around.

Xbox had a lot of chances to turn things around, but I think Mattrick really derailed them. For all of Spencers' short comings he was right, Xbox lost the worst generation. Even if they came out swinging with good exclusives, Sony still would've been ahead with their exclusives. Mattrick pretty much guaranteed Xbox's 2nd place to PS
My digital library that i built up on the 360 not being carried over to Xbone (at the time) was what killed off Xbox/Consoles for me. I know they have fixed it now with the new gen, but it came too late. The real winner in all this is Steam IMHO
Trust needs to be build after a betrayal the xbox one was a betrayal of xbox gamers trust under Don and Phil was supposed to rebuild that trust in xbox but with series x having no great exclusives and everything going third party especially closing studios at the time where xbox needs these games the trust isn't there
''Xbox lost the worst generation''. I disagree with this statement, the 7th generation was a turning point in the industry where HD gaming became fundamental and many iconic IPs were born during that era; they were so close in winning over the PS3 but they stayed too complacent riding off the Kinect success that by the time the Xbox One failed against PS4 they had already given up that fight.
Crazy to think Microsoft got it so right with the original version of the Xbox 360, it was just so perfectly executed, it had a really snappy fast dashboard that was simple and easy to navigate, it had almost no perceivable latency at all, it had immaculate analogue video via component/VGA/RGB and fantastic digital image quality via HDMI and the 360 supported a plethora of different resolutions and aspect ratios (and it actually renders them all properly and adjusts POV accordingly), the games ran either off the disc just like precious generations, but you also had the option of installing the whole game on the main drive, giving you much faster loading times and faster texture rendering, and you could still enjoy high-quality digital direct CD audio as the game was still in the DVD drive, and then there was the really spot on HRTF audio the 360 had that every game had natively baked into the game, giving the 360 proper multi-positional surround sound thanks to it's 256 32-Bit audio channels, MS mandated every game be encoded in high-quality DD 5.1 at the minimum, and many were in DTS, the 360 just got the audio spot on, Dead Rising for instance has really good HRTF audio baked into the engine. Then there are the games, there were plenty of single-player exclusives like Dead Rising, The Darkness, Gears of War series, Halo series, Forza, tons of exclusive gems and tons of multi-plats that played best on the 360, and that was just the main game platform on the 360, it also had the incredible XBA platform that MS had put strict limits in place that turned out to be genius because it meant we got a huge library of digital only exclusives that were consistently released on the platform at good price points, gems like Splosion Man, Limbo, Shadow Complex, Trials HD, Boom Boom Rocket, Battlefield 1943, and dozens more and they were nearly all bangers, one after the other, this wouldn't have happened has MS not put size limits in place for XBA games that forced devs to focus on gameplay instead of just fancy presentation and so on, there was even the Indies platform that had it's own guidelines and size limits, and it gave us gems like Dig Deep Miner, it was the spiritual successor to PlayStations Net Yaroze project, we even got some of the first HD remasters, and these were actually well done remasters that left the spirit of the game intact and just upgraded the resolution and in some cases audio quality, we got gems like Resident Evil 0 HD, Beyond Good & Evil HD, XBA had very little shovel ware due to MS placing quality standards not seen on current platforms, which is why moderns digital platforms have so much shovel ware. There were also great quality of life touches on the 360, like being able to mix your own music CD's into video games you were currently playing, and it did it so well because it properly mixed and balanced the audio levels with he current games audio effects and disabled the games normal soundtrack but left the SFX intact with proper sound levels, that was all purposely done and thought out by the MS devs, Microsoft employed their best dev talent that normally worked on Windows for the 360s initial Blades OS, which is why it was so good, sadly MS destroyed it though with the awful dash updates that just got worse & worse until it reached peak terrible levels with the Metro dash, the NDE was good in comparison, but nothing came close to the snappy Blades GUI. Oh did I mention the 360 also had near perfect OGXB backwards compatibility with over 96% of the library playable in 1080p & DDL 5.1, what about the native PC monitor support that can do 4:3, 16:10 aspect ratios as well as traditional 16:9, what about the immaculate online multiplayer network with perfect always on HQ party voice chat, the instant messaging in game by either voice or text, the matchmaking that just works and works well, or the sub 5ms latency over HDMI or sub 1ms via VGA or RGB on a CRT, the brilliant achievement's that can really extend the replayability of your favourite games and add a real challenge, leader boards and high-scores, MS gave us all of those things with the 360 (and even the OGXB for some of those features). All that momentum, amazing games, console hardware and software MS built was destroyed with the 360 E type with the Metro Dash and Xbox One, which had dog slow user dash riddled with latency, COD Ghosts felt as if you were playing through quick-sand, MS forgot how to make exclusive games, except for Rare Replay, the Xbox One has nothing worth buying the console for, the digital platform was just a generic digital storefront, gone were those special and creative Xbox Arcade games, gone were those experimental Indies, gone were the QOL features that we got to enjoy on the 360, gone was the plug & play choice of just playing of the disc in seconds, gone was the optional update choice, gone was the low latency gameplay, Xbox went from the gold standard video game console, to the pointless paper weight with no games, piss poor online network performance, no always on voice chat in the name of censoring people, I could go on. With MS dead in the water now, there may be an opening for a newcomer to release a console that lives up to the original Xbox 360 Arcade console.
Phil still has an effect on the downfall. He’s had plenty of time to right the ship. Blaming a guy that hasn’t been at Xbox for 10 plus years is ridiculous!
I blame phil. He's had over a decade to fix xbox and everything is so much worse than when don was in charge. Xbox doesn't even have a single exclusive anymore and is porting their games to PlayStation. It's so over.
2:29 This guy has clearly not tried CoD on the Wii, it nailed FPS controlls on the Wii remote. Another pretty good one is Red Steel 2. Would also say the Metroid Prime trilogy is good. This is to say, the Wii was a very valuable experiment by Nintendo. While Nintendo has previously experimented with Gyro controls, I think the Wii made them embrace gyro on their future consoles in games where it would be useful.
I really like PlayStation Move as well and I think the removal of the light bar from the DualSense Controller was a mistake, but it is understandable since Playstation VR2 uses inside out tracking rather than PlayStation move camera tracking.

@@kingsleyjackson8287 For the people on PC is great but for the console is bad and therefore console owners as well. Right now no one is interested in buying Xbox because the games can be played on PC anyway. For some consumers that is great, they can buy one less system and for strictly PC players is great as well since they get games they weren't getting before. But this means that the console is pointless and therefore low sales. and the lowers and lower sales go the more it will be pointless to exist as a platform and ether just shut down or because another PC store or simple game developer. The guy who invested in an Xbox also feels duped as well. He bought that system to get something unique and he realises is pointless having it. Is like if Apple went and put iOS and every app they have and every operating system and tech they have in every other system. Now you can get everything Apple by just buying any Pc or Smartphone. Some people will love it but Apple will become a much smaller company and people that invested in their highly priced products will get so annoyed they will want to smash them on the nearest wall. Nintendo understands this which is why they keep their stuff and don't give it to everyone even if a Mario game on PC will make good money. A good example on how console sales matter is the fact that Playstation Plus has more subscribers than Game Pass despite Xbox promoting and leaning on game Pass much more heavily. Microsoft has been pushing Game Pass like crazy paying billions to enhance it and yet Playstation Plus has a lot more subscribers simply because more people have Playstation. And more people have Playstation because more people thought there is still some value getting one. Sony though is following the mistakes of Microsoft on PC releases even to lesser degree and they will start feeling the pain in future consoles sales if they think they can put everything on PC and it won't hurt their console sales.

Same thing happened with Sony when Andrew House left and Jim Ryan took over 😢. Also them moving their HQ to America and making everything western was a bad idea. Capcom is the same now, even though their games (ps1 resident evils) had the English voices in the japanese versions all their actors and actresses they definitely tone stuff down now across the board e.g Dead Rising Remake
@5:25 Brother, perhaps you weren’t an adult during the ps3/xbox 360/wii console generation but the Wii hype lasted for the normal span of a console generation. It was practically sold out in the USA until 2010, and games like Wii Fit sold incredibly well. The issue was that Nintendo was able to make compelling software around the Wii. Microsoft was not able to do the same for the Kinect. It may have been due to the technology but it very well could have been the developers not understanding what would be a compelling experience.
i think ypu ever had a xbox with dvd drive stuck, catching fire or the rrod, so for you all was perfect, things never improved, just became more clear after two decades, they didnt had a plan, so they came up with this, a beautiful disaster in progress basically
Everybody loved Don Mattrick when he introduced the 360. He was a great presenter but you got to remember something he's an Xbox salesman and the problem with that is if you're given a shitty product it becomes extremely hard to say the right things and when he said just buy an Xbox 360 what else was he supposed to say? "well tough shit sorry you ain't playing it offline" there wasn't much you could say without advertising Microsoft. Nothing was his fault but the developer team behind Xbox One and Don Mattrick was just merely the punching bag and scapegoat
You mentioned 1vs100 briefly. I'm still grieving over the loss of that! Avatars may have been a Wii ripoff, But they really worked there! And the sense of community during gameplay was the best feeling ever! They really had something there!
This is the reason why it is unethical to hire executives with loyalty to other companies as your front-runner. They are literally the worst kind of people.
This is where Microsoft lost a consol war not for one generation but forever. After that they never represented Xbox brand as competition for Sony's playstation or Nintento but as something like "hey, who da f*** cares. We enjoy to play games not consoles". Lol. It was truly a painfull downfall for them after 360 came out to be a big succsess.
He is not the only reason. The lack of good first party exclusives is the biggest reason. There isn't a single game on Xbox comparable to The Last Of Us or God of War.
This guy not only almost kill the XOne, produce the low sales on the Series S/X, and, in someway kill the xbox brand, but more important, if someday console gaming dies, is gonna be his fault.
Nope PS3 had a terrible start and they turned things around with way less wealth than Microsoft. Xbox leadership just doesn't know that to do and are just throwing money at the problem and hope it will fix it.
console gaming is on the way out any ways, microsoft saw the writing on the wall and become a game pass/3rd party company nowadays. pc and mobile gaming is where everything will be in the future, sony just late to the party. even they catch on and start piling their exclusive to pc. ps5 has no fucking games, if u were to tell me this 5 years ago I will laugh at ur face saying thats not going to happens. and look where we are, its 4 years into ps5 cycle no one fucking game was design from the ground up for the ps5 let alone exclusive that can sell the ps5. face it console days r numbered, who in their right mind would buy a ps6 3 years from now. lol
@@drconflict629 And PC gaming may become irrelevant in the future, too. You could get nVidia GeForce Now installed on a FireStick, pay the $200 a year nVidia subscription, and Cloud play PC games. HD TVs supposedly will also be able to play Live Service games, too. On the PC side you'll probably need to pay $500 for a video card that compares directly with consoles, say the PS5, like RTX 3080 and RX6080, so, basically you'll need to build about a $1500 PC. Don't forget to buy MS Win 10 & 11, too. Sure, you could go with an RTX 2070 for $300, but that just means that you'll end up building a $800 - $1200 PC. So, since PC games are all digital, why spend $1500 when $200 will do? Yes, right now the PC is the way to go, but in a few years you may not need a PC to game. What if MS came out with a streaming app on your TV that would allow you to play all their games through your TV and pay $200 to GamePass? Oh, right now you'll need to go hard-wired Ethernet USB adapter, like CableMatters, but eventually TVs will move away from USB2.0 and go with Wi-Fi 6 chips, or Wi-Fi 7. $500 consoles are still cheaper than $1500 PCs, so they're not exactly irrelevant.
360 was the console that literally everyone had when I was in high school. We had huge Halo 3 custom games nights where the entire lobby was full of people who actually new each other from school. It was a blast. When Kinect launched I didn’t know a single person who wanted it.
Phil Spencer is in no way a saint but honestly who would want to put in much effort when you’ve gotta run cleanup after the last guy when you take on a new job, I’ve been there it’s a real pain in the ass
@@modernmobster I liked the decisions he have been making until recently. I do think Xbox is in a better state than when he took over, but we don't see a bright future ahead. I think the problem with Xbox is the problem I've seen all over the tech industry; we've become complacent to investors. Obviously, this is a business, but Xbox; a GAMING brand, should protect its developers and the quality of its games over anything else; investors included. Firing people and then saying they need more games like the ones those people made is one of the worst takes I've seen in gaming history, and only adds more cynicism to the already cynic landscape of tech development. Employees don't care about company values, and corporate doesn't care about their employees. What do you get from that? Mediocre quality products and decisions, from upper management all the way down, and whatever quality product that comes from that it's not thanks to the company, but rather DESPITE it.
@@Dairunt1 Phil is a complete flop as well. Under his leadership Xbox is on life support and he's transitioned the entire brand into a gaming subscription.
@@TheRealtalk617 He made a big bet turning Xbox into a subscription service, but to his credit, I can see why. Exclusives are becoming less and less economically sound, games are taking longer and more expensive to make, PlayStation is miles ahead of the Xbox in terms of sales and Nintendo pretty much owns the handheld market thanks to the Switch. There's not really any more room for Xbox to grow besides subscription/cloud. Maybe the story would have been different if they took iPhone seriously in 2007 and Windows Phone would have dethroned Android. They could have done something around mobile and maybe Windows as a whole should have started to migrate to ARM since then. All of these issues are all symptoms of the bigger problem which is Microsoft. Of course, having a subscription service with a slow stream of content of varying quality is not going to make your service any good. If you're taking ownership from costumers then you have to distract them with new content constantly.
Wrong. Peter Moore is the one that got that ball rolling and success was on cruise control by the time Donny showed up. You’re telling us that Donny delivered more games in his tenure during Phil? Hahahahahahaha
Literally ruined Xbox in so many people’s eyes. Even just saying that it needed to always be online when it didn’t was enough for people to never buy a Xbox again
Technically it did if you need internet just to setup the system in the beginning you need online just to use it that's why I will never buy a Xbox one and series x and stick with consoles that never need internet especially for the first time setup like Xbox 360 ps4 and PS5 3ds psvita switch and Wii u
I feel like Don Matrick took most of the blame because he was the face of Xbox, however, I'm sure that a lot of the controversial decisions were orchestrated by the higher-ups at Microsoft and Don Matrick was just being a (albeit crappy) salesman trying to sell a crappy product. Funnily enough, most of the controversial decisions ended up becoming industry standard nowadays for the most part. Phil Spencer, on the other hand, has been a total disaster for Xbox and if Microsoft was serious enough about consoles, they would've fired him a long time ago.
No the current bad games release under Phil's management is not the result of Don doing destruction to the brand. The brand might never able compete anymore but worsening the conditions is because Phil still at the top after so many bad games releases. Would u put the blame to the people who is not responsible of the current woes? Oh right, u already did.
On rewatch I just want to say this: The kinect was groundbreaking and ahead of it's time. The Kinect 2 is an even better kit. BUT hardcore gamers don't care. So you need a solid product.
At the time I tried to imagine how Kinect could be integrated in games that are not designed arround it, and nothing came to mind other than voice commands, which is almost as good as nothing. Even if the accuracy and responst time were perfect, the best you are going to get is a copy of wii sports.
I held on all the way up the Series X. Even bought a Series X, 1 year later I finally caved and bought my first PlayStation console since the PS1. The drought of first party games and the Halo franchise turning into a dumpster fire, turned the decision of whether to purchase an Xbox or PlayStation a no brainier.
It's crazy how one CEO could completely wreck a product's trajectory. I still remember when sega's CEO at the time of the sega saturn, stopped all production of western sega saturn development of games and distribution and publishing in 1997, a whole almost 2 years before the dreamcast would come out in late 1999. While that console was failing at the time, there was next to nothing to play if you were a sega fan at the time and happened to buy the console and enjoy it. Lackluster presence in such a competitive market can be a silent killer. And this video shows a modern example of such a disaster.
The 360 era was soo good that even the RRODs didnt stop xbox from breaking into the console market. Now even gamepass which is quite awesome ,xbox is still in last place.
Imo the worst problem wasn't the whole tv thing for one, it was the slow and weak cpu and the os, everything is laggy within the system, even when installed on ssd, while ps4 just feel snappy
I agree. The previous captain crashed the boat and it began to sink. The second captain came in with a smile and reassuring words, then started selling off parts of the boat and everyone clapped at him because he did it with a smile, then they realized they have less boat now.
The Xbox 360 did well in Europe but the Xbox One was doomed from the start with a presentation focused on US sports and streaming services coupled with the console being unavailable in most European countries. It was a big sign saying "we don't care about you" to Europe. Meanwhile, the Playstation 4 was available across Europe so everyone went with what their friends were buying even in places the Xbox One was available.
7:31 The thing is there were *tons* of people that got a PS2 because it was literally the cheapest DVD player on the market back in it's day, however does that mean PS3 should've became focused on being a DVD player? --Well, Sony capatlised on the idea and the PS3 featured blu-ray playback, and also it's games were on blu-ray discs, meaning whilst some games on 360 needed 2+ discs on ps3 it was just 1. The tech came hand in hand, being great for people who might just want a cheaper* blu-ray player and also for gamers since games were again stored on fewer discs. I don't see how focusing the Xbox One on forcing the kinect to be on, having constant internet connection, not being able to trade games, was doing anyone any favours, it wasn't like an icing on the cake like the ps3. End of the day it was just a stupid re-design that focused on a group of people that weren't instrumental in the success of the console in the first place. Now we're at a point where Microsoft is slowly turning into a publisher rather than a sony competitor which is just bad for everyone. I feel like the moment Microsoft announced they'd be porting their games to the PS4/5, they basically started waving the *white* flag. *PS3 was also considered one of the cheapest blu-ray players during its time.
The Wii's popularity with non-traditional gamers is what ruined Xbox. The Wii was smartphone games before smartphones. It sold like hotcakes because smartphones didn't exist yet, and Microsoft foolishly thought that this was a permanent trend and wanted a piece of that pie. But whoops, then smartphones became a thing and all the non-traditional gamers played their shovelware there. This is why the Wii U and Kinetic failed. Their target audience all got smartphones and left consoles behind. That's the trouble with catering to the casual masses instead of real gamers. The casual mob is fickle. MS chased a brief trend (the Wii) and lost badly to Sony because of it.
I miss the good old days when Peter Moore was the head of Xbox. Moore had the right vision for Xbox to convince gamers to buy the console, which starts by delivering a fresh batch of spectacular games (both exclusives and 3rd party titles), then deliver a spectacular online service to connect the Xbox userbase together. Glad I still have my Xbox 360 and regularly play games on it.
Yep Xbox 360 and Wii u switch PS4 and PS5 3ds psvita are offline systems that never need internet especially don't need internet for the setup unlike Xbox one and series that's why I will never touch a Xbox one and series x
People always like to say motion controls were simply a fad, but without them we wouldn't have advanced VR to the point it's at now. I think people often forget that stuff like the Wii and even the Kinect were baby steps to getting that tech working. Hell, some people even use the Kinect for full body tracking in VR

Kinect was a huge success. Core audiences may have snuffed at it but it appealed to casuals. Gamer dude would play GoW but his partner bought Just Dance.
Big companies are obsessed with growth, but not in the traditional "let the games do the talking" way, but looking for "ways" outside of it. If you consistently release good games, people will buy, money will come in, and all parties will be happy. It seems that they want to be in the "console business" with anything but good games, that's why they have trouble finding "growth".
It’s worth mentioning that this reveal happened at a time when the internet of infrastructure of many “third world” countries was not amazing or like what it is now - like in South Africa where I’m from, - hearing about all of its internet requirements, the focus on TV and overall a very Americanised product turned ALOT of people off Which was crazy considering how well the 360 did
Weird, isn't it? In the aftermath of the Don Mattrick fiasco, Phil did an amazing job in salvaging confidence in the XBox One. But in the long run, he has been an even bigger disaster than Don.
What was stupid about it? I mean, it's a computer company and video game consoles are computers. It's no less weird than Sony (a company that made Walkmans, cameras, and TVs) making consoles.
And even to this Gen Microsoft are making failures and mistakes, Xbox Series S is one of them making a less powerful version of the series X has caused release delays, due to that to release on Xbox the game needs to be playable on both consoles. And lastly the lack of exclusive console only games, exclusives are what makes people buy your console, not having them means the console is not worth buying. Sony will soon need to learn this lesson soon, with some of their exclusive titles being available on PC.
Just going to say this that no one seems to care about, what is killing the Xbox brand is the Enforcement Team. NO ONE should get banned indefinitely from their xbox account
@@pepethunder what do I need to work on? I just play video games, I don’t even communicate with people. Why am I getting banned just for playing video games??
Both the xbox one and xbox series x/s are powerful consoles, yet the original xbox have a lineup of immersive and impressive exclusives.. it's a big fat shame tbh. Xbox was ruined by corporate greed.
Bunch of clowns still blaming Mattrick when Spencer has had a decade and has done nothing, he is the one responsible for the state of Xbox, he is hot garbage just like Xbox.
Both Sony and Nintendo have had their share of issues. The PS3 launch was a disaster, and the Wii U was a flop. Yet, both companies were able to rebound. The PS4 literally saved Sony from bankruptcy... So, to place blame at Mattrick's feet 10 years later is unfair. Phil Spencer took over within the first year of Xbox One and with the exception of backwards compatibility, every decision he's made has been a failure. HE and HE alone is the person responsible for destroying Xbox.
If you needed to put a pin on the Xbox’s timeline where they completely fucked things up and never truly recovered from, it was the unveiling of the Xbox One and the subsequent comment regarding the offline Xbox 360. One man fucked everything up. Without question. Phil had to do his best with plugging every hole the sinking ship that is the Xbox brand. I think that’s why they made a push for Xbox Anywhere, focus on PC, backwards compatibility, cloud gaming, game pass, and hardware like the One X and Elite Series controllers. Genuinely great products and services for the most part. But you can tell they tried to do their very best to get away from the initial reveal. I highly doubt any of those things would have made it to market if they were at the top, or close to it. Things would’ve been very different if they went in just building upon the 360 from the beginning. Because of their hands being forced to pivot to services like game pass and xcloud, now they are going down a different path that would lead them to sinking anyway.
Someone gets it. People talking about its been 10 years. The damage was done though. Phil got left a bad hand, not saying hes amazing but for keeping xbox afloat and some idea of relevant after the brand damage that was done is commendable. Microsoft and Xbox arent great by any means, but the Xbox brand has gotten a really bad rep, just for continuing to compete, while the competition is going stagnant because they have the market share. As a big PS Fan, Sony isnt really doing a great job either
I really like the way you've shared all your sources in the video description. It's a small touch but to someone like me, it makes a world of difference.
Its so sad to me that the Xbox and the 360 were two of the best consoles ever made, and the xbox one and series x are possibly the most boring. Ive had an xbone and series x for the last 9 years respectively and the only games I can truly say are timeless classics that can be replayed countless times, is everything in the master chief collection (except halo 4) and those games came out way before the xbox one. Sony and Nintendo have multiple franchises that are on that level. I do believe Don and whoever else thought his shit was a good idea killed the console, but microsoft has been failing for 10 years to bring it back. Im not saying Sony and Nintendo dont have their problems, and the PS5 might be more boring than the Series X, but theyre still killing it. The only good thing has been game pass. Not infinite, not gears 5, sure as hell not halo 5, hifi rush and sea of thieves were pretty good, but now you can play SOT on playstation and they just killed the company that made hifi. I used to defend xbox, but its impossible with how poorly its been handled even after a decade of its biggest mistake. Just take me back to the 360 and wii days
As always, suits will always ruin products because they themselves are not consumers.
The suits have the money to deal with whatever BS they put into their own products, if they even use them.
They were ready to go as far as using Kinect to determine how many people were in front of TV, and then potentially charging you extra if you had friends over to stream a movie or watch a PPV.

Same. I loved my OG Xbox and 360. Great games. I loved Stranger’s Wrath for 360, a real return to greatness for Oddworld.
Plus gamepass offers more value- never remain loyal to any company go to the one that offers you the best value at that time.
me too. I got my first own console (OG xbox) and then 3 years after launch i finally got the 360 (we needed to safe money)
This was my absolute favorite. But when the whole hype about the Xbox died, i simply switched over to PC and never regret it.
I now also have a old used Xbox one to play Multiplayer games and old games like Injustice 2, Modern Warfare 2 etc.

And to their surprise many of us switched sides and never looked back, Microsoft has definitely paid severely for that mistake but i do hope Xbox does make a comeback as the console space is in desperate need for real competition.
yep, MS is shit but we do need them as competition so Sony wont repeat shits MS did.

@@JohnDoe11VIIwell xbox 360 had at least 4 console model, but you are right that the first model was rca only and the cooling problem

Xbox had a lot of chances to turn things around, but I think Mattrick really derailed them. For all of Spencers' short comings he was right, Xbox lost the worst generation. *Third place
Not to mention RE4 wii edition
Unfortunately Nintendo cut costs on the Wii Remote and didn't initially include a gyroscope, the Infrared Camera was criminally underused too.
I really like PlayStation Move as well and I think the removal of the light bar from the DualSense Controller was a mistake, but it is understandable since Playstation VR2 uses inside out tracking rather than PlayStation move camera tracking.

It's worth noting that the console does have Hulu, RUclips, and Crunchyroll; the latter two are at least used pretty frequently by gamers.
So while it's not the primary reason people buy the Switch, the console does make up a sizeable portion of both services' audiences since neither require the subscription services of the Xbox or PlayStation to use.

The issue was that Nintendo was able to make compelling software around the Wii. Microsoft was not able to do the same for the Kinect. It may have been due to the technology but it very well could have been the developers not understanding what would be a compelling experience.

console gaming is on the way out any ways, microsoft saw the writing on the wall and become a game pass/3rd party company nowadays. pc and mobile gaming is where everything will be in the future, sony just late to the party. even they catch on and start piling their exclusive to pc. ps5 has no fucking games, if u were to tell me this 5 years ago I will laugh at ur face saying thats not going to happens. and look where we are, its 4 years into ps5 cycle no one fucking game was design from the ground up for the ps5 let alone exclusive that can sell the ps5. face it console days r numbered, who in their right mind would buy a ps6 3 years from now.

@@TheRealtalk617
He made a big bet turning Xbox into a subscription service, but to his credit, I can see why.
@@TheRealtalk617how is Xbox on life support? Please elaborate
I saw an Xbox One at the dump looked like a VCR, couldn't save it from the dump, but i guess i can see why it was there.
Don't worry. His successors are doing a great job at destroying Xbox.
Phil Spencer is the one who ruined Xbox. Has been on charge for more than 10 years with unlimited budget! and yet did nothing to improve the brand.
Say what you will, but at least Don had games coming to the platform, ironically. What has Phil done? He’s worsening the wound.
Wrong. Peter Moore is the one that got that ball rolling and success was on cruise control by the time Donny showed up. You’re telling us that Donny delivered more games in his tenure during Phil? Hahahahahahaha
@@MizzahTeeYes. Phil has destroyed xbox completely.
@@wind2536 You're right my bad. There are a lot of Kinect Sports games and Kinectimals lol
@@MizzahTeestill more than what we get now
Literally ruined Xbox in so many people’s eyes.
Releasing a console using DDR3 unified memory vs GDDR5 was an unreported downfall. XBO has most games running at 720p.
I remember buying a XO on launch, and party chat didn't even work properly. It was a disaster all around
I like how you conveniently left out the national security issue with the NSA and project Prism lol.
No the current bad games release under Phil's management is not the result of Don doing destruction to the brand. The brand might never able compete anymore but worsening the conditions is because Phil still at the top after so many bad games releases. Would u put the blame to the people who is not responsible of the current woes? Oh right, u already did.
Are we sure he wasn’t just following his boss’ orders?
On rewatch I just want to say this:
The kinect was groundbreaking and ahead of it's time.
You mean the Eye toy was ahead of it's time lol

I really miss the good days of the 360 truly an amazing console generation
In the grand scheme Phil Spencer has done an equal amount of damage if not more
He started the decline but Phil Spencer has been at the helm almost 10 years and things have only gotten worse. So who’s really to blame here?
Both. Don't think it has to be an either or here.
It's sad that Xbox would never be the same, my series S it's going to be my last xbox. And that hurts...
Bit unkind to the Wii regarding motion controls. In general, they were pretty good and leaps and bounds above the Kinect.
Are people not aware that Phil Spencer himself was in the circle of executives who pushed for the Xbox One being more about TV TV TV?
This was erased from Xbox history, otherwise the narrative wouldn't fit.
"Phil saved the Xbox brand"
MS chased a brief trend (the Wii) and lost badly to Sony because of it.
don was just too early for those ideas
I miss the good old days when Peter Moore was the head of Xbox. Moore had the right vision for Xbox to convince gamers to buy the console, which starts by delivering a fresh batch of spectacular games (both exclusives and 3rd party titles), then deliver a spectacular online service to connect the Xbox userbase together.
Glad I still have my Xbox 360 and regularly play games on it.
And this is why I’m still on 360
Wow
Yep Xbox 360 and Wii u switch PS4 and PS5 3ds psvita are offline systems that never need internet especially don't need internet for the setup unlike Xbox one and series that's why I will never touch a Xbox one and series x
The 360 was the best Xbox ever nobody can tell me otherwise
@@Ercxgamez yes you don't need internet to setup it up for the first time unlike Xbox one
because you like rrod?
Should be a vid about Phailed Spender.
It’s worth mentioning that this reveal happened at a time when the internet of infrastructure of many “third world” countries was not amazing or like what it is now - like in South Africa where I’m from,
- hearing about all of its internet requirements, the focus on TV and overall a very Americanised product turned ALOT of people off
Which was crazy considering how well the 360 did
Now xbox is doing DEI and refuses to leave it
The Wii's motion controls worked just fine. The problem was the misleading advertising. You don't move your arm, just your wrist and it works great.
phil spencer is ruining xbox even more
Don shot Xbox in the spine while Phil has been poisoning it. Idk which is worse.
I'd say it's the big bad tech company at fault here, and it's the name of that company.
Weird, isn't it? In the aftermath of the Don Mattrick fiasco, Phil did an amazing job in salvaging confidence in the XBox One. But in the long run, he has been an even bigger disaster than Don.
Here from luke stephens/Luke reacts youtube channel. Great video and I am now subbed. Looking forward to future content. Keep pushing ✊
Microsoft? Making a console? That's stupid. That's what I thought as a kid in 2001 and it turned out to be true at least in the long run.
Why yall even getting banned my dude? If you are getting perma banned, work on that, because it seems like a "you" issue at the root.
@@soralifestory Uh, the PS3 & 3DS recovered though, so the Xbox One could have too. They just decided not to
I really like the way you've shared all your sources in the video description.
360 was a joke in europe and still is. American delusion at it's finest.
