It doesn't feel like it, it's just a fact. They clearly released them too early. Honestly ,they should've dropped around 2022. I remember several games being announced on last gen around the release day of current gen. Being a veteran gamer(35 years of gaming), this was very sus to me. The upcoming games were gonna be smash hits and would last for a good minute too. There were no actual 9th gen type of games announced either. The only game that ended up being somewhat of an actual 9th gen game was cyber punk. But it was originally made for last gen and the dev team just went a little past last gens tech levels lol. They announced a few actual 9th gen games 1 year after their release. Those games are just now preparing to release smh. I was smart to wait, there's no reason to get them now(or upgrade your PC). Except for a slight upgraded port that cost $10 more. Im still playing RDR2, pso2 ngs, diablo, and elden ring. On the slim 1TB xbox 1. Ive seen them on current gen, no reason to drop $300+ and pay $10 more for slightly upgraded ports. It's a waste upgrading your PC as well. The slim versions bout to drop(its about that time). $100 - $60 price drop, more built in space, improved systems, and actual current gen games. Or you can wait 2 years after the slim versions and get the slightly upgraded versions (you know they gonna do it)lol.
@@Max-yu2yd I dont think one game can justify the purchase of a console or make a console “worth it” tbh. Especially people like me who just do the single player campaign and then move on to another game. We need more sequels/exclusives and new IPs and not just remakes/remasters
@davidhusari2739 Exactly which besides the exclusive issue is why console gaming is now obsolete. I mean it's been trending in this direction really even before 8th gen but now there's literally no good reason to opt for one unless you're just getting it as a Christmas present for your kid or something along those line's. The best bang for your buck is PC gaming and if you're into Nintendo's shit I suppose the switch is valid.
@@kevingower1268tf does Covid have to do with everything? People need to stop using this as an excuse to make subpar products. With the technology we have today, there’s no excuse why video gaming is in the state it’s in right now.
Nintendo is proof that it isn’t always slow hardware holding back devs, it’s money. Throw enough money at devs and they can make Crysis run on a potato
Nintendo's underpowered hardware has ironically saved them from many things ailing the industry right now. Making a game with a realistic scope in mind is important. 5+ year dev times and million dollar budgets isn't healthy or feasible for every game, and we're seeing the effects of that now.
This is exactly how Capcom utilized Monster Hunter. They knew they had gold in their hands, but most of the world wasn't interested. MH has always done very well in Japan, especially after the PSP ports. However, the global audience was pretty small, so they had the developers focus on cheaper consoles. Gen 3 and 4 were on Wii, PSP, 3DS, and even Wii U. MH3U sold much better on 3DS than the Wii U, so they kept Gen 4 on handheld.
@@Sykxezn Nintendo knows their name brings confidence in most people. It's why they can still sell their games for $60. Whether or not we think it's a good thing, the point is that people will pay for it. When the Wii U and 3DS were struggling, deals and price cuts were everywhere.
@@Sykxezn Are you talking about the Switch? The cheapest version is $200 new and the most expensive is $350. The only thing close to that in price is the Series S and you're giving up all physical media to get that price. Handhelds will always be more proportionally expensive because they have to add things a home console doesn't. Screens, non-optical games (biggest hinderance of the PSP), speakers, etc. Sony and Microsoft also tend to sell their consoles at a loss. The Steam Deck is quite a bit weaker than a PS5 but cost about the same.
i will say owning a switch has done exactly that , although i cant hate too hard cause ive been able to play games i missed out on as a child, final fantasy 7 for example
They have a pretty good release schedule. Plus games they made in xbox one era are still cash cows for them. Sea of thieves and FH4 are still extremely popular. I think people that complain dont understand.business or actually create anything...you guys are kids or unemployed adults. Whatever you like or dont like about xbox or playstation these companies make trillilns and billions respectfully. And xbox has higher profit margins than ps. Because most people just buy and play what they want and dont complain like a child on social media comment sections. I clicked on this video because i knew it was going tp be a pretentious opinion piece based on emotion with cherry picked info. And i eas right lol.
I say it's my PS4-pro-pro. Being able to play most games in ~1440p 60fps makes it worthwhile to me. But as a new generation machine? Kinda disappointing.
As another person mentioned: "the endless pursuit of graphical perfection in games has not only hurt their gameplay and sense of discovery but their development as well, becoming extremely expensive and taking years to develop, which is unsustainable for companies and consoles in the long run"
Preach. I HATE how this has impacted gaming. Not to mention how the endless pursuit of "realism" has almost crushed the ability for games to just be cartoonish and fun.
Meanwhile the indie industry is investing in interesting and unique artstyles instead of graphic "fidelity", and getting much better results. Though I guess the same can be said about some big Switch titles.
@@psychomoth06 I believe it's the fault of the audience itself. Why? Because no matter how hard the devs give what we want, there's this sense of demanding more. And we'd want more of that pursuit of realistic graphics in games until the faucet runs out of water; rather than. Prioritizing the quality or the content.
2022 seems like a year in which a lot of money was spent but nothing of vale have remained, people went crazy for cryptocurrency like Terra, Luna and NFTs
A big factor, especially for Sony, is the dogged determination to make nothing but AAA $200+ million budget type of games. Like, I'm sure the PS5 and Xbox Series would have a lot more to offer if they allowed themselves to make games with smaller scopes and smaller budgets, something akin to the development cycles of old. And they have the IP to do it, too! Get a Parappa, a Sly Cooper, a Syphon Filter, or a Banjo, a Blinx, a Blue Dragon a chance to shine. It doesn't need the fanciest graphics or the highest budgets. It just needs to be good.
Playing Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 at 4k/60fps makes it feel like a new AAA release . 155 ps4 games have the 4k/60fps patch so far for Ps5. Even without a ps5 patch the Ps5 plays all 3,454 Ps4 disc games with a faster ssd loading time and never drops below 30fps once during game play . Many may ps4 games caused the Ps4 console to drop below 30 fps during game play .
Dreams concrete Astro Playroom Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart Sackboy a Big Adventure all say hi. But of course u will ignore the smaller stuff even though its there
@@umaryusha5792You just named almost all of the PS5 exclusives that are great games and I believe all of those were immediately available at release or soon after. Rift Apart is one of the most beautiful and fun games I have ever played, but I have been disappointed since I finished it. Nothing has lived up to that standard so far almost 3 years later.
This gen is well disappointing. Consoles struggling no way they can do a AAA game with 4K native at 60fps, then there’s raytracing which it simply doesn’t have the power to do. The norm in quality seems to be 1440 native at 30fps or slightly upscaled which is a long way from native
I bough ta PS5 purely to play the next Horizon game before it releases 2 years later on steam. Waste of money? who cares. By the time I've completed the third Horizon I won't care how much I spent on it (to be clear I got it from a friend who sold it at a reduced price because he wanted a slim)
Animal Crossing? Pikmin? Fire Emblem? Arms? Splatoon? Kirby? Xenoblade? Metroid? Even Pokemon, for all its faults. Most of those have at /least/ one big game and aren't Zelda and Mario. Plus one-off things like Ring Fit, NS Sports, Astral Chain, etc. Seriously, if you're gonna bait, use better bait my guy. Lazy af. And for the record, I'm a PC gamer, I'm not even a massive Nintendo fan and even I know that crap rhetoric of 'le zelda and mario milk' is so old it counts as a fossil.@melu0o
Being one of them, I can tell you that big gaming companies choose to make up for their poor management and decisions by laying off all the passionate and talented people working for them. They are pushing back the release of every single games while overworking the few remaining. This is not getting better any time soon.
My only reason to buy a console is to play games that would otherwise be unplayable on pc. For example, the 3ds. Not many 3ds replicas out there, with the exception being the surface duo 2. But thats expensive compared to a used 3ds, and the 3ds is the intended way to play it anyway.
why is that sad? Its literally a gaming console. Much of the reason for these consoles not having a console based exclusive is because of how expensive these games have gotten over the years. People expect more and more out of games and then complain when it takes too much time to program these games or if a developer uses techniques to cut down on development (aka Spiderman 2 almost using the same map of the original). Either we should all be okay with Nintendo's strategy of smaller, less demanding games and indie titles that can be made on a budget and kicked out the door in shorter time, or we all should just be patient for the bigger games to come out every 5 to 6 years. Its not like we dont have enough games in our backlog that havent been played yet.
I don't wanna hear anyone trash the WiiU's library anymore, at least in comparison to what Sony and Microsoft are doing now. I think even the WiiU had more exclusives than both PS5 and Series S in half the time (it's arguable whether or not some of them were "good" exclusives, but they were exclusives all the same).
tbh i think a big part of the Switch's success was due to the Wii U ports helping it in its first years, the only reason the Wii U failed was due to it's god awful marketing
I love the wii u but I think one thing Nintendo fans need to understand is that for most people the third party games outweigh the first party games from Nintendo. So yes in pretty much every generation Nintendo makes the best first party games but with cost of so many third party games, it doesn't really make nintendo's libraries superior to playstation or EVEN xbox who literally have zero good exclusives the past decade. The majority of people would only ever buy 1 console, so its common for them to choose an xbox or PlayStation.
the Wii U's issues are arguabIy the opposite of the PS5s hey we have a Iotta reaI good excIusive first-party games! and the worst way to pIay IiteraIIy anything eIse and are often missing big third-party reIeases whereas the PS5 is hey we have Iike 2 first-party games not on PC (yet), but we're a great way to pIay IiteraIIy everything eIse (even this isn't true these days with how degraded performance modes are becoming)
The Wii U was a great system tainted by bad marketing and lack of 3rd party support. The First Party library was as solid as ever, minus the lack of a Wii U exclusive Zelda.
@@torkelsvenson6411 I mean, while not a mainline title, Hyrule Warriors was pretty based. Though granted, it was only an exclusive for about a year or so before that crappy 3DS port (which, aside from added content, felt more like a downgrade, though the later Switch version would thankfully fix most of those shortcomings).
I feel like we also dont talk about the priorities of these companies. Nintendo makes video games, that is what their company does. Sony and Microsoft make thousands and thousands of products and services, video games being a small slice of that. Its not weird that Nintendo puts game development first while the other conpanies treat it as a side project.
Playstation is literally carrying Sony on their back and without it they'd be dead. They are just as much of a gaming company as is Nintendo. What you said is only true for MS
@@64bitmodels66 No they wouldn't be dead they'd just make much less revenue and have to scale down certain sectors. On the other hand gaming is literally *all* Nintendo has; they're *exclusively* a game company just like Capcom and Sega are, the only difference is one of those has a hardware platform.
Most of Nintendo games have lost all the fun to me to be honest. Nearly all of them are made for children and don't have a difficulty slider option for those who want a challenge. It stays popular because they focus on the younger generation. Current parents who grew up playing those games will support their kids due to the nostalgia aswell. It's a cycle. Now i'm not saying they don't have great games. I enjoyed Dread and the Xenoblades. BotW and TotK were fine I guess. They were outstanding for allowing you to do whatever the hell you want whenever you want and I still think they should be the blueprint for all OW games. But I still think Sony IS the gaming company for us 90's/00's generation. Outstanding story driven games with hardcore challenging options. Superb graphical fidelity evolution. Fun combat mechanics that stays interesting throughout the games. Amazing hardware for what you pay. Innovative controllers. And the proof is in the pudding. 7 years that Nintendo has been without a GotY. FromSoftware won 2x with their hard as heck games. Sony 2x aswell since 2017. And now Larian Studios with one of the biggest story driven games ever made. Set in a world with choices that I wouldn't recommend to Nintendo's target audience. Now... now you got Palworld. A pokemon game that actually took the leap and did something different. In 6 days it sold 8 million copies. In Early Access state. I hope Nintendo reflects about the future of their company and that while they can keep the same formula in some games and IP's they've got to try something different or they'll be phased out eventually.
@@magikushI was close to buying one last November because i finally wanted to play the demon souls remake. Already had the games in my hand fully intending to buy the system and the game. Was walking through the isle with the ps5 games and was like "got this on pc, that one as well, this is a Ps4 game... Is that it? “ And decided that it would be a complete waste of money and i would probably would never buy another game on the system. Oh well guess i use my ps3 if i want to play demon souls, doesn't have the shiny graphics but this upgrade isn't worth 500€
My rule with consoles is there has to be a minimum of 3 to five games on it to justify my buying it or other reasons. When the switch came out there was only botw and I didn’t want a switch until there was anything else. Animal crossing wasn’t even announced yet. I still ended up getting one for Christmas with botw… which I didn’t enjoy that much as I expected would be the case. I now have a decent dozen or more games on it. But I swore after experiencing that and seeing what happened with the Wii U I wouldn’t get a console unless I knew there were games out that I’d enjoy and wouldn’t have to wait 3-6 years for anything.
KEEP THAT IN MIND I DESIGNED THIS RHYME TO REMIND MYSELF WHY I BOUGHT, A, SWITCH IN SPITE OF THE WAY THEY WERE MOCKING ME ACTING LIKE "AAA" STOOD FOR QUALITY REMEMBERING ALL THE TIMES THEY FOUGHT WITH ME I'M SURPRISED I HAD, SUCH, FUN DEVS AREN'T THE WAY THEY WERE BEFORE YOU WOULDN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE THEM ANYMORE NOT LIKE THE GUYS AT "BIG N" BUT IT ALL COMES BACK TO THEM IN, THE, END THEY MADE EVERYTHING WITH PRIDE AND WHEN THE OTHERS TRIED, THEY ALL FELL APART WHAT IT MEANT TO ME WILL EVENTUALLY BE A MEMORY OF A WORTHLESS PS5
Part of what allows Nintendo to have so many quality exclusives is the fact that their consoles aren't as powerful. They don't have to spend all the time and money it takes AAA companies to create ground-breaking photo realistic assets and and new physics engines for each new release. Microsoft and Sony could have much larger libraries if there wasn't an expectation for all "next-gen" games to have the production value of Hollywood movies.
There’s a saying that goes something like this: “limitations breed creativity”. The Switch’s hardware has pretty much forced developers to think outside the box somewhat if they want their games to stand out. I believe that’s why we got Square’s absolutely stunning HD-2D visual style. Someone once said that it’s like the next evolution of SNES-style graphics without losing their charm.
Also Nintendo: Barely innovates game design within the biggest multimedia franchise of all time (Pokemon), is a decade behind with their hardware that can't even run Kingdom Hearts without cloud servers, has less competent online infrastructure than the PSP from 2005, and leaves a series like Metroid to die because they can just print money with Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda nostalgia.
@@jamesmcmackin8773Pokemon is made by gamefreak and ppl still buy the games by the dozen so they have no incentive to improve, kh3 was universally seen as a disappointment so not missing much there, and ur example of metroid being left behind doesn't make much sense when dread and the prime remake are some of the best switch games😂
Nintendo gets so many passes for being far more counterintuitive to gamers than Sony and Microsft, who at least have the common sense to publish most games on PC so we're not forced to emulate to get an actually technically competent experience. Not gonna lie, Smash Ultimate and Metroid Dread are nearly 10/10 material (Prime Trilogy is more fun on Wii U although the Switch port of the original is well made) but there's so much tainted potential with Nintendo, they can't even get it right with publishing their back catalogues from the 80s and 90s which remain unchanged since being ported to the Wii VC so long ago. @@altonb.1396
What I find very funny about the switch 2 being as powerful as a ps4 is that if the device was a dedicated handheld people would compliment it for how powerful something can be in just the palms of your hands but just because tv mode is an option the device is seen as underpowered and behind the times
Considering the Switch was mass produced in 2016, having the top mobile GPU of 2015 (Tegra X1) was very nintendo-unlike, I would have expected a handheld system with that power in 2017 maybe from sony, but not from Nintendo. From Nintendo I would have expected it to use PS Vita-similar power. (2011). Yet people unfairly judge it just because it can also play on the TV, as if connecting something to the tv would automatically give the device the obligation to have stationary hardware power. No flexibility, no tolerance for new ideas (mobile hardware based tv/handheld hybrid)
@@Saroku1000 I siad this then and I'll say it now: you could use laptop hardware instead of phone hardware. It's already far from pocketable, so size is IRRELEVANT, and they already were switching from PowerPC to ARM. Or even a second GPU in the dock using SLI, which maxwell fully supports.
I remember hearing it was basically equivalent to a PS4 and thinking "that's pretty fucking good" and shocked there was so much negativity around it. The PS4/XBone are still getting AAA games and given how shit like The Witcher 3 could run on the first Switch, having that as the base to work with gives devs at Nintendo a stupid amount of extra leeway without having to fall into the shit AAA pit of money sinking dev cycles for games that play basically the same.
@@jimbob1862Thing is, people want games like what they were promised which turned into CP77. That game can't run well or at all on old gen consoles like PS4, so when people heard a new console will have power comparable to a 2 generation old console, they express distaste. The fact that it's a handheld may have flown over their heads but it's going to be a pain in the ass for any third party developer to port their 2020+ games onto late 2010's tech.
How tf is the switch 7 years old already... It seems like yesterday that I would get home from school and go on my shitty laptop to watch the first reveal trailer
It's how I feel about the xbox 360 and PS3. At the time I thought it would never become old and I would always keep up with it. Now I have zero motivation to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X
A big chunk of the problem is that game development has only been getting increasingly expensive, with higher ups with ambition reaching as high as Mars and developers getting generally underpaid and overworked for the companies to afford the development of these games. Part of the issue is the stock market, with companies feeling pressured to produce smash hits rather than taking risks with smaller projects that might not pay off as well because they feel obligated to their shareholders. As a result, they're in direct competition with each other to make the biggest, grandest, most ambitious titles they can while also having to take as many cost cutting measures as possible to make it even possible to happen. It's getting so bad that even basic optimization seems to be getting skipped over, a big chunk of the reason for games releasing with poor performance. The 9th gen consoles would likely be performing a lot better if something could be done to address the state of AAA gaming in general right now, but for now it doesn't seem especially hopeful that any noteworthy change is coming.
Hopefully GTA 6 is the AAA game to really revolutionize the industry as a whole im hopeful for that release other than that this generation will lack substance.
if you cut the several hundred million dollars made by the ceo, games are still as cheap to make as 10 years ago. palworld had hundreds of millions less budget than spiderman2 that had something like 315 million dollars and that stinker didn't even break even. edit: oh and palworld outsold it in something like 6 days.
I own both and the XSX isn't a bad but for Retroarch. That's all I use it for. Best way to play a LOT of games. I even fired up SH3 and it auto installed a proper widescreen patch and ran at 60fps.
My Switch library is set to dwarf my entire physical collection. There's so many great games on the Switch that didn't blow out their budget for graphics alone and made cash hand over fist for Nintendo.
That's just Nintendo's ethos, fun family friendly games. If it's fun, then it's worth it. I have a ton of Switch games too and they are all amazing games I dumped most of my life into. That's not to say other consoles and games are not valid, as I am a collector that has every console from the 2600 to the PS4 so I know and have a wide amount of games to play - but for the last couple years I've definitely been camped out on the Switch a lot.
It also helps that Nintendo just makes premium games, not mtx machines. I've been especially hooked on Kirby's Return to Dreamland lately, which is also surprisingly fun with 2 players. After that I'm looking forward to playing Forgotten Land, Super Mario RPG Remake and Thousand Year Door Remake when it comes out.
@@LillLizzert Well they make MTX Machines but at least only for the Plattform suited for it. They learned from Super Mario Run. They tried to conquer mobile market with a premium game and got rated into oblivion on how they can dare to demand a one time payment for 5€ for the full game. Then they made the game full of MTX and inconvinience with a payment option included to turn most of them off and they got suddenly praised. So yeah then they started with Mario Kart Tour and Fire Emblem Heroes to do big Gacha P2W games because somehow mobile market is degenerated and want to be abused.
In light of Microsoft's announcement of over 1,900 layoffs across its' studios it is also worth mentioning another reason why Nintendo seems to be able to keep consistent releases of high quality games. They have an employee retention rate of 98%. Even when they were struggling with the Wii U they held onto their employees with the CEO taking a pay cut to make that feasible. If you show loyalty to your employees, they will want to give you their best in return. Something the Microsofts of the world could learn.
An uneducated fool everyone. The reason those employees got released was because of overlapping of ABK jobs. You don't need two sides of customer service when they can report to XBOX. The employees all got a year of severance pay and help to find other jobs. Layoffs is normal after an acquisition.
@@ipityplaystationpeasants2305Partly true, but it wasn't just customer service. They fired whole development teams, both teams behind new AAA survival game and Overwatch 2 got axed. Plenty of people working at Sledgehammer and other studios got hit as well.
Sony had such a banger of a library back on the PlayStation 1, 2 and even 3 days. Games were unique, varied and had a lot more heart put into them. They were also willing to take more risks in the mechanics they featured and subject matter they tackled, and many third-party developers provided to a truly diverse library of games. Nintendo is seeing success now because it has a more diverse library of games that actually focus on "gameplay" rather than cinematic fidelity which we have been seeing from the other consoles, especially Sony and their "movie style games". That and they also cater to younger gamers as well which helps sell their systems. Microsoft has only one thing going for it, and that is the fact that its Xbox consoles are backwards compatible to many retro games in the previous libraries. As someone who thinks older games were better, I see more value in the Xbox consoles as legacy machines for playing older games that again are mostly better than the stuff coming out today.
Honestly this is absolutely everything in life now. Everything is constantly getting worst everywhere I look. Movies overall are getting bland. So many tech companies that offered cool stuff in the 2010s are dialing it back. Cars are getting so complicated to the point when I buy one used it's turbo charged hybrid battery and giant screen will be broke. Houses are more unaffordable than ever all while new houses being built are so cheap and pathetic. You can't even find a good refrigerator these days that will last 30 years like old ones. Then us as well. We such a decline in mental health. Seriously, it sounds so dramatic, but every industry is getting worse and worse. They have so many issues in them it poisons them while hurting consumers.
Well, Microsoft has also brought convenient and functional gaming to all computers as well. Really you don’t need an Xbox to “play Xbox”, you just connect your Xbox controller to your windows PC and it’s the same as as Xbox. No other console maker has come close to bringing that level of interoperability to the table.
It Is weird because my favorite game on Switch Is Xenoblade and It Is "movie style" I absolutaly love the story of these games, I like the gameplay too though It has a lot of problems. But Xenoblade I could watch the cutscenes and wouldnt lose much, other games I love like Mario and Zelda, just watching Is lose a lot, playing botw was an amazing experience
Yeah, I skipped the PS4, was still enjoying my PS3 games and all my other games DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and PSP, PS2. Then when I thought about getting the PS5, it was a scavenger hunt so didn't bother and have never thought about Sony again. Use my Switch 2-3 days a week, in no rush to get a Switch 2. Especially if Metroid Prime 4 is not a release title.
- This console generation _launched_ in the middle of debilitating supply chain issues and labor disruptions. - Taking advantage of new features requires more labor while the quality of the labor available is falling plus the aforementioned rough start. - AAA gaming has been creatively bankrupt for at least a decade now. - Indie gaming has been on an absolute tear lately. - The PC has really had a heyday in the age of no console exclusives and indie gaming (plus it literally has a backlog you can still play on modern hardware going back to the 80s). - The destruction of game ownership brings with it the destruction of the need for a specialized box to play proprietary media you used to own. There's a whooooooole lotta reasons, but I think this or the next generation will be the last console generation as we've thought of them since the 80s. We're just watching the beginning of the end right now.
"I think this or the next generation will be the last console generation as we've thought of them since the 80s." Bruh, Nintendo is right there, still doing it, and not stopping. Good games on good consoles is still a thing. "AAA" just means "$$$," and the cash grab phase can go ahead and die, thanks.
You’re right it’s something I’ve thought of years ago Like eventually consoles will get powerful enough to just be pcs and everything will releases on older consoles too if it can run it kind of like how pal world recently released on both Xboxes
@user-yc7ws9jp9g yet, live service games get shut down faster and faster every time. Live service games are a thing since a decade ago, but most of them fail miserably.
For Nintendo, they have so many smaller franchises like WarioWare or Pikmin that have been building up the Switch’s exclusives. For Sony, they could give a rat’s ass about their smaller franchises like Ape Escape or Parappa the Rapper. It also doesn’t help that they’ve been pushing for stupidly expensive games which are taking years to develop.
on the other hand, you probably DON'T want smaller franchises to come back anymore. they died at their peaks, don't bring them back to mediocrity. i don't wanna see parappa the rapper, blinx the timesweeper and countless other smaller franchises become woke, live-service and always online. it's already gonna kill the crazy taxi and jet set radio remakes.
Switch and PC are the way to go. Switch may be underpowered in terms of hardware, but that's where PC comes to play. You got both the definitive way to play modern day games on both systems. (The switch with Nintendo's games, and PC with third party/other triple A games)
I mean, if you don’t mind unofficial emulation of Switch games, sure (I know different people can have wildly different stances when it comes to not getting the “official, legal” releases, especially when it comes to Nintendo games) But if you do want to stick to official releases for whatever reason, there is still a case to be made for getting Nintendo systems
Because of the limited hardware of the Switch, I didn't found the PS4 and Xbox one outdated for a couple years after 2020. The fact that in 2023 there still are a lot of Triple A titles getting last gen ports isn't suprising for me. These two consoles really aged that well in my opinion.
Basically the 8th and 9th generation consoles are more similar to Steam Machines (full fledged computers), while the Xbox are more computer type than the PlayStation (The Xbox One and Series shares the same operating system based on Windows 10/11 and their programs executables are equal and use an universal API, making trivial create games to both consoles).
I bought the series x last year, but I kept my XB1 so I could run all the games that don't need the new gen hardware to run well. And honestly, most of my library could run on the old console, just not as well as the new one obviously. But the difference is pretty negligible. Load times are the biggest improvement but besides that I don't see the big difference, and I'm glad I bought mine on sale after a few years because this thing would not be worth full asking price at launch, even if it did have a huge library of games behind it.
And the people saying "PS4 power won't be enough for Nintendo's next console!" I say, look at the graphical difference between the PS4 and 5 versions of games like God of War Ragnarok, and Street Fighter 6. The fact that there's so many cross gen games still to this day proves that this won't be that much of an issue. And going back to the PS4 gen, we had games like GOW4, Tekken 7, MK11, Destiny 2, and Nier Automata
Wrong way around. The 8th gen was considered underpowered especially on the cpu even back then. 9th is considered pretty good it's just they got the picture the gen we stopped getting massive visual upgrades. So the switch 2 will be a console that was considered weak when it released 10 years ago. Not wanting to join the rat race that is graphics is one thing but to come out of the gate so underpowered is bad for developers who have to work with garbage hardware to make it run half decent.
True, but not being powerful enough also means losing out on good multi platform games, which means less good games on your platform. Just look at how many years it took for the Witcher 3 to make it to the switch, and there is no Elden Ring on switch at all as of now. There definitely is a balance to be had with how weak you want to make your console, which is why I wouldn’t recommend a switch as a primary console to anyone unless they are diehard Nintendo fans. The switch is an awesome secondary console tho to a ps5/pc
PS2 generation was goat generation in gaming history. 6 generation PS2/xbox GameCube we got so many games like from rockstar 4 main gta is that joke nah its real. That generation will be always no 1
Good games come from good, talented developers. These mega corporations have so much money they could just dedicate an entire branch to small, risky, wacky games just like in the PSP or DS era. Some of which can go on to become the next big IPs, given the chance. Otherwise you're left with nothing but remakes, and that vein is starting to run dry too.
What we need, in my opinion, is an extended generation. Don’t rush out the next system, 4 years in and games still release on last gen, extend this one to 3 or 4 years longer than it “should” to make an upgrade REALLY worthwhile and necessary
The console hardware isn't getting any better by the time these consoles are 10-12 years old they will be far behind the industry standards and devs will likely not want to deal with that

I will point out that a huge part of how Nintendo was able to have such high consistency for the first few switch years is because of the Wii U’s failure. They did all the things Sony and Microsoft are criticised of this gen like cross gen releases and a huge number of rereleases from the Wii U, but because nobody owned a Wii U they were able to use a backlog of 5 years worth of finished games to fill any gaps in their schedule and everybody just saw them as consistent new games not less interesting rereleases. It’ll be interesting to see that their release schedule for the switch 2 will be like now they don’t have that luxury.
Given that Vita whas a failure because despite all the power there where no games to run on it and for playing your PSP games you where supposed to buy them all again, I doubt Nintendo does this mistake too. They already said they offer backwards compatibility to Switch so both the new players as the current players will switch over as they can use their current library on a better system.
This console war reminds me if that episode of SpongeBob The Great Snail Race. Squidward has a shiny new snail that works for him (PS5) but doesn't win in the end and SpongeBob overworks his snail to the point of failure (Xbox). Meanwhile Patrick has a snail that is just a rock and cant move at all ultimately wins in the end (Nintendo's low powered Switch)
After the Wii U disaster, Nintendo has fucking nailed it with the switch. And what's the big secret? Well... amazing games that you can only play in their console! Who would have guessed, huh?
Yeah you can play Wii U ports and have the privilege of paying full price twice (well actually you might've been able to get them on sale on the Wii U but not on the Switch)
I thought it was very strange, and perhaps telling, that whenever I would try and think of games that were PS5 _exclusives_ - no cross-gen, no cross-platform releases - my mind still jumped multiple years back to things like Rachet and Clank, Demon’s Souls Remake, and Miles Morales, all from late-2020 / early-2021. When you brought up that list of all the PS5 exclusives and broke it down, it now makes perfect sense why I would always think that way. Those three games I mentioned are almost half the current games that have been released, and they all came out roughly at the same time as each other. It’s no wonder they stand out so clearly in memory like that.
Both Sony and Microsoft have normalized this idea that your big system-selling games also have to be the most technically impressive and detailed things ever. It’s great to have those sometimes, but not everything HAS to be pushing graphical boundaries. Why do almost all of Sony’s 1st-party studios need to be making games like this all the time, exactly? There should be more than 1-2 notable exclusives every year I’d say, and you achieve that by re-thinking your priorities a bit. On the other hand, though, this generation has definitely also been impacted by global events like the pandemic in ways other consoles didn’t, and that shouldn’t go unrecognized. There is a chance that the back half of these system’s life-spans will be more robust.
If I buy the most powerful console I want this console to use it's power 100% of the time, I didn't buy ps5 to play games that could run on cheap mobile phone.
I honestly would not be surprised if this console generation lasts longer than originally planned, we shouldn't even need new hardware when we're not pushing current consoles anyway. I personally don't care if the games aren't graphical powerhouses, I just want fun games with good stories.
Maybe it’s sheer luck, but Nintendo made a brilliant move with the Wii way back. The rush for cramming more and more power into game consoles hardly matters anymore when you can get those same games running 5 times better on PC anyway. The Wii, DS, and Switch sold well because they weren’t trying to compete with the rest of the market. It doesn’t matter that Nintendo can’t run some massive random triple A game at 60fps, or that it doesn’t support 4K. The Switch has Mariokart, and the Xbox, PS5, and PC don’t, and it turns out families are far more inclined to play Mariokart with their kids rather than a massive open world PVP RPG $50k AMV that people will write off as a disappointment anyways.
It's not only the IP... It's also that Nintendo actually still cares about local/couch co-op experiences! It seems like Microsoft and Sony abandoned that after the 360/PS3 generation, which really bothers me!
@@ultramegaxalso, since Pokémon needs handheld consoles for their mainline games, if the “Switch 2” turns out to be a pure home console, Nintendo can still support the Switch a good deal thanks to its hybrid nature.
@emptyglass7867 PC is potentially more powerful but there are very good reasons why so many people are choosing to play on console rather than PC. Anyone who has played GTA 5 or any big multiplayer game on a PC knows it's full of cheaters including aim bot dribblers, wall hackers and god mode melts. Its an absolute car crash on PC with cheat detecting software claiming over 70% of players have cheat mods of some kind enabled even if it's to lower recoil rather than straight up aim botting. In complete contrast to the nightmare it is on PC GTA 5 on PS5 is absolute heaven and it feels like the good old days after release before hackers completely ruined it for non hackers on PC. People also like playing on one homogeneous system. This guarantees someone playing on mouse and keyboard at max settings at 240fps with a super high refresh rate monitor isn't going to be matched with a last gen console player using a controller and struggling to maintain 30fps on a 60hz TV. Players on console can usually switch off matchmaking with PC players meaning one party doesn't have a massive advantage over the other anymore and research shows the majority of console players massively prefer it this way. This is what makes consoles so many peoples favourite way to game because being able to mod on PC guarantees this will be a massive problem that console players prefer to avoid 🎮
@@bagelbomb1887 There are more people playing on OC than there are consoles combined, why are you fanboys like this?. Like it's been statistically proven and market data has shown that PC gaming has become popular over the past 15 years, and no it isn't shrinking either. Also I've seen plenty of console games full of cheaters, this is longer PC specific, and it's not even the fault of the platform, it's the fault of the publisher not taking any action, which is who you should be pointing fingers at. Also it's asinine to assume 70% of all players have "cheat mods" (that's like saying all of modding is cheating and I hope to god you aren't one of those idiots that think like that). "homogeneous system", yeah, not everyone likes having to suffer with low framerate and high input lag either on a 60hz TV either. Again, blame the companies for Crossplay, and even then there are people who still wish to crossplay between platforms, and it's not really your place to say they cannot. There is no hard research, that's you pulling it out of your ass from one website, and I know the one you're on about, because die hard console fanboys ate that shit up for weeks. YOu know what?, you are a console only fanboy who just lives to spread misinformation and shit on PC, and that's honestly just sad mate.
Gunpei Yokoi’s philosophy of making fun out of aged technology is what makes Nintendo special and is why they still are. You see it in the Game & Watch line and you see it in the Switch. Great video, you have my sub.
I will never understand why people claim that games not being exclusive was ever helpful. Literally if both have the same games on different platforms then why pick one over the other, they might as well just get a pc then, but pc is not exactly a solution since pc (while it has a lot of people ) isn't exactly the most inclusive thing you could get it requires alot of research most people aren't going to do and only pc people are going to care about specs. Consoles act as a nice accessible way to experience gaming without putting in a lot of effort and most people are going to want to just play the game so exclusives drive competition. What happens when you have no exclusive? You get a lack of confidence with the console, with both sides give very concerning comments like how xbox doesn't believe a game will sell consoles, or Sony saying there will be no major releases this year, like how is that good for both confidence and the brand loyalty fans?
As a PC gamer I love this gen, last console I found worth owning was PS3 but really PS2 had such a large amount of exclusives you have to emulate it to play tons of them, PS4 and PS5 has everything ported to PC so why bother, I sold my PS4 last year.
@@blu8093 It's useful because you can buy one console and play all the games - saving you ~$700 while providing the exact same gaming experience. The part of gaming that's important to me is playing the games, not identifying with brands. I legitimately don't understand why anyone would want more exclusives.
@pyramidschema8668 I think what I mean is that while it's fine that gaming has decided to be on every platform, which is a good thing for the consumer, it doesn't exactly push units. I'm basing it off if what they are saying and how they are struggling with console sales and all the mass layoffs going in the industry (which may or may not be a technical thing rather than a video game thing). The best way to push units is competition, giving the consumer more value to their brand, and that usually means exclusives. probably a good compromise to this system would be timed exclusives so that way exclusives don't dominate the whole industry. It would reward those who have the console but not alinete those with the other consoles. I'm no expert on this field, and i wouldn't know what the solution to this 'dry' generation we find ourselves in, but hopefully, they find the solution, and they won't have to just give up and quit
I'm 43 and 20 years ago, I was saying that graphics would eventually run out of room to improve. Here we are. I guess graphics can always improve, but the cost and time required to make these games isn't worth the squeeze anymore. I'd rather have games look like Switch or even GameCube era, and have a booming AAA market with tons of games every year, than hyper realistic games that only release every 7 to 10 years, and often are littered with bugs. The games market has reached a point where they need to just focus on innovative games that play and perform well, rather than graphics. Switch is in the sweet spot. They just need better performance. I don't need Zelda, Mario or Pokemon to look more realistic, though.
40 here; like the smartphone market we're past the point of diminishing returns. Manufacturers can't delay a new release though because the other company will release something newer, hence why the smartphone market is 5% improvements every year. I'm more interested in seeing how efficient the consoles can get though; if the 3rd iteration of the PS5 is able to run off USB-C port that'd be insane.
42. And yep, I'm with you too. I was saying this back when the PS2 was coming out. "If they're spending all that time trying to make them look more human, what happens when they do?" I had hoped that the next logical step is, "what can you use extra processing power for, other than graphics," but apparently not There was a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto in EGM's 100th issue article. He said "I feel that as time has gone on, there are a lot more games, but a lot fewer ideas about what can be a game." What is missing is new ideas for what can be a video game, like, new actual games that we have not played before. Too many games follow the "go kill things, take their money, buy weapons, save the world with the power of friendship" model, like way too many. At this point, it's very difficult to come by a new idea for a game, I suppose.
Mario Sunshine and Windwaker look better than modern games to me. Nintendo not only gets the most out of their hardware, but they build games to take advantage of their strengths and hide the weaknesses. The art styles they choose work well . A recent exception to this is the current generation of Pokemon. Those look terrible and have a soulless atmosphere.
graphics are getting better, the games attached to them aren't. rockstar is probably the only company I can think of doing both at the same time. also consoles have been holding graphics back for over a decade now. Konami forcing mgs5 to be on 360 and ps3 (nearly 10 year old consoles at that point) ruined the devs scope of the game and plans so much it had to be severely downgraded. Also flagship gpus use to be as expensive as entry gpus are now.
Nintendo really dominated these last few years as a producer. Moving into their next gen, a very interesting question is: will they fall into the same trap of Sony and Microsoft with games as a service, skyrocketing budgets and dev times?
I hope they can manage to solve these problems. Having underpowered hardware is one way to limit the scope of games, but people including me expect a lot more from Nintendo games this upcoming generation. How will they manage? Who knows.
@@TejaWell there's been a lot of "Nintendo would never do that." moments such as paid DLC, mobile games, and online subscriptions, yet they checked off each one. So who knows? They could.
This is why PC gaming, and by extension the steam deck, is such a good long term deal. You can emulate all the huge last gen lineups, and you're getting more and more console ports every year due to demand. The main cost is upfront, but then you're not stuck to a console and it's downsides.
I need a good and safe carrying case system for my gaming pc(about 30kg) as we tend to have quite a lot of gaming lans. Its quite a pain in the ass to (partly)disassemble, move and then assemble again all that stuff. It along with some compatibility/external devices/wireless devices issues are the worst aspects with pc gaming imo compared to consoles. Otherwise i have yet to run into major problems with pc gaming, well theres the budget issue. You can buy a cheap gaming pc, but if you want a new spesific looking and higher spec pc, you likely wont get that cheap. You likely have to wait for some parts actually to even be in stock and then wait for their arrival. And while some might say to that, just search all the time for lowest prices and special offers from all sites of the world, and thus you can buy a new cheap gaming pc. Then you are spending lots of time and energy into that work, and it is like work, while you could be playing right there and then instead if you used a bit more money. And its quite risky and inconvenient to buy stuff that is example 50 euros cheaper from other side of the globe if/when there are troubles with either shipping or the product itself. Let alone with warranties etc. All in all i would advice sticking to more local/closer and established actual shops when it comes to buying separate new parts for assembling gaming pc. Even if some of the parts would cost a bit more. I have at least find it convenient to return some parts if i didnt like them for reason or another to a closer by shop/business no questions asked rather than to send via returns and then waiting for weeks what will be their response and if it even arrived. And if they would accept no questions asked, then waiting for my money to return. Its very tedious imo.
@@drewtube6838 Depends on what pc you build. A console will always be obsolete out of the box, because electronic components like gpus and cpus are always evolving. I built my pc to last a decade, and it will. It will outlive ps5 and ps6 but maybe not ps7
The UE5 demo was 100+ gigs and barely had anything to it. It was pretty much just one level. The truth is, making games that look as good would end up with games being 500+ gigs, maybe 1,000. That's just not sustainable, not even talking about development costs.
You forgot the craziest detail out of all of this. This is with the fact that both of these consoles are backwards compatible while the Switch isn’t. Meaning Nintendo had to build that library with mostly remakes and original titles. Very few being straight ports
@@ClassicSonicFan40 Not a lot of basic ports with nothing to it, but a lot of "Our main goal was to just port this game, but here's a few new things because you may have already bought this on Wii U" games
@@Gold_Yoshi For sure they have a number of games on the Switch that are, “Here’s X game but with New Funky Mode” so I fully agree with you there. Or when old games are put on there it’s usually a remake with updated visuals, controls, mechanics etc.
This generation only feels like a year old... yet we're actually 3 years deep, heading for 4 years this year. It's ridiculous that we're "half way" with barely anything to really show for it. If they try to push the next gen in a year or two I'm honestly thinking of just upgrading my PC and ignoring the consoles.
This generation is best time to clear your backlogs in game library collecting virtual dust for years There are so many great games to play 2016-2021 that was missed out and now on huge discounts on sale
When Iwata said "the winner of the games market will be the company with the best ideas, not the best hardware" he was right, but for the winning idea to be as simple as "release games frequently and for a wide variety of people" is sort of hilarious to think about because doubling and tripling down on the "AAA market" is only gonna lead to diminishing returns as those games take longer to make and require ever higher sales goals to actually turn a profit. I think some people's fears of a market crash are hugely overstated and born entirely out of speculation; but I also don't see the current paradigm of the "big" consoles lasting.
Companies like Microsoft/Tencent/Apple/Amazon/Google are the only ones for better or worse who have the money to wade through It all regardless of how Industry trends or budget requirements evolve. Nintendo can hold on but I don't know If they can ever truly grow as a company much , although finally translating their exclusive franchises Into successful blockbuster films and opening Amusement parks gives them other streams of revenue and avenues to grow Into (1993 Super Mario Bros movie Is still better imo). Sony could've and should've been worth alot more than they are now but I guess they made too many financial mistakes , they need some other new visionary/revolutionary Investment or Invention beyond Playstation If they ever wanna move forward Into a 500 billion or trillion dollar company , seems like they've been stagnant as a corporation with Playstation mainly keeping afloat since the early 2000s , but they're getting Into the electric car business In a joint venture with Honda so who knows , right now I think they're very vulnerable to getting bought up or losing their #1 spot In the gaming Industry within the next 10 years If they don't do something , just due to the size and frequency of Microsoft's acquisitions alone they'll probably surpass Sony In gaming division profits soon. Microsoft already has more studios and digital gaming Is (sadly) the #1 way people consume most entertainment now , worst case future scenario I could see Sony getting bought by Apple , and Nintendo being bought by Microsoft or another company of similar size (Tencent / Nvidia?). Things are definitely about to drastically change within the next 2 console generations because the gaming business seems more unsustainable than ever right now imo.
Ever truly grow? Nintendo is the king in their own market. They don't have to worry about anyone. They didn't get a hit film or their own park within another popular them park out of luck. They got those things because they're known for quality, it's by design. Nintendo is a household name both in Japan and worldwide. Their only true rival ever was Playstation but once Jim Ryan took over and the HQ moved to California that threat died. Nintendo is once again the indisputable top dog. And Xbox is such a laughing stock that they had to settle with becoming the Netflix of gaming to even keep up. They even needed to attempt to buy their way out of the hole with acquiring all of these washed studios with billions of dollars. And what did they have to show for it thus far? Redfall and Starfield... jumping with joy over here. @@fawkkyutuu8851 Let's just address the white elephant in the room; Xbox peaked with the 360. That was when they actually had gamers making games for other gamers which is why they even had a seat at the table. They've had a fall from grace since and haven't recovered yet.
Naah, a market crash is not going to happen, the entertainment industry is too big to fail at the current stage, dare to say they are at their most "powerful" state ever, considering how the infantilized adult base their entire personality on mainstream media, superheroes "representing" black culture and so on. Videogames are riding on the same wave, people are more engaged (and addicted) if compared to previous generations. Saying that, I do think it's only a matter of time for both Sony and Microsoft to simply settle down at the next console generation, just marginal improvements to technology. So if a game like FF16 took 5+ years to make, FF17 in the PS6 generation will look pretty much identical to FF16, but it will take 3 years to make instead. And so on, as the tech reaches a threshold and the scope of the projects diminishes, the sustainability of the "triple A" will improve a lot, maybe we will go back to the PS2 generation (the golden generation imo) were you had four Splinter Cell games being released in the same console cycle, the devs were able to release a triple A title like Splinter Cell every year (I guess the actual development cycle took 2 years, following the original game). At the current PS5 standard, if Ubisoft was to make Splinter Cell again with the fancy new light effects (the ray tracing shenanigans), cinematic scenes and so on, then port this game to PC, etc.. that would take 5+ years, which means one game for the entire console cycle
Well, he would have been wrong, if the quality of AAA games didn't plunge into the depths of Hell. If Call of Duty was making new games on par with Black Ops 2, or if Battlefield was making games on par with Bad Company 2, it would be a different story. If Redfall, Fallout 76, Babylon's Fall, Diablo Immortal, or Cyberpunk 2077 were good, it would be a different story. But they're not, and here we are. He banked on those companies being unable to keep up their golden ages for a prolonged period, and he won.
I don't know how well Hi-Fi Rush did but I wish MS invested in more projects like that. Not specifically like that even though I enjoyed the heck out of it, but AA projects that don't get hyped up to eternity, building expectations to unattainable levels. Just in general feels like a game someone other than a committee wanted to make, and doesn't feel bloated like it's just trying to eat up my time. All killer, no filler.
Hi-Fi Rush blew me away. It felt like a game from the mid 2000s, a linear level-based action game with a strong focus on its specific gameplay loop. Such a breath of fresh air compared to the endless parade of open world "everything" games that most AAA titles are these days.

I think it’s because of these two consoles coming out during the pandemic thus affecting development of several titles and Sony and Microsoft have realized there is a massive market on PC. I’ve even seen some people who think it might be worth it for Nintendo to try releasing some games on PC, likely for preservation. Edit: All this and there’s also Sony closing Japan Studio thus decreasing a lot of potential for exclusives.
I actually agree with this. The pandemic caused pretty severe shortages in the chip industry, even to the point where it impacted used car prices. With how few systems were being shipped on time, I think Sony and game publishers probably figured that cross-gen and PC releases were the only way they can make their money's worth. The unfortunate downside is that whatever gains Sony had during that time are probably being impacted currently due to the lack of exclusives for their current consoles.
Im surprised that Microsoft hasn't just given up on Xbox at this point and go entirely into the PC market. If you count Windows OS as a console, its got the best exclusives, a near-infinite library, limitless ways to play, Steam has support for every modern controller, the fact these other consoles haven't given us any reason to play them besides playing your backlog slightly better is absolutely crazy
Because people don't play on windows by choice but because it was historrically the only viable OS for gaming. Now with SteamOS and Proton that can change in the future and leave Microsoft in the dust for gaming on PC.
Well it seems like they're doing exactly that. Xbox might as well be a cheap gaming PC with a stripped down OS just for people who think PC is scary. That's probably why they don't care about exclusives anymore.
I still havent picked up either console due to how little reason there is to get one and whenever I see them do their own directs most of the games shown just all blend together and I couldnt tell you what was there. Wish they not only had games but actual variety.
I bought the Ps5 to play the 155 Ps4 games with the FREE 4k/60fps patch. It also plays all the 3,454 ps4 disc games ever made with much faster ssd load times . Even if you never buy a single ps5 game the Ps5 machine is well worth it . Playing Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 at 4k/60fps makes it feel like a new AAA release .
Really isn't worth it to me. Ps5 games look n run a fart better (not vastly different) but still happy with ps4 pro. Ps5 upgrade is just an expensive tickle.
I literally want two singular games. Demon Souls and Spider-Man 2. It’d probably take me 2 weeks to a month to beat each one. There’s just no justifying spending 500$ for two months of game time.
The one thing you got wrong is the Wii U. It has a great library of games which were all overlooked by the gaming press because it was the popular thing to write about. The public overlooked them because nobody had ever heard of it. None of my casual gaming friends ever knew what a Wii U was. But if you look back, what wonderful games it had! That said, you really hit the nail on the head. When you compared where the Switch was at three years and where we are now, it was a very good point.
Yeah, the attitude towards the WiiU is quite dumb. It is largely obsolete but like...most older consoles are, it just hit the U faster because they ported nigh everything over and closed the eshop. It is also majorly funny to have people say "man, how bad the WiiU lineup was, luckily the switch has *lists enhanced or sometimes downgraded ports of games that were on WiiU*". Even the major systemseller at the start of the Switch originally entered development for WiiU and actually made slightly worse because they remoddeled it to be cross-plattform rather than highly optimized around the WiiU's hardware like originally intended.
I commented on this same thing. Many of the popular games people love on the Switch were designed for the Wii-U. The video creator even mentioned Breath Of The Wild. I've played both versions, and the Wii-U version is so much better. Along with Hyrule warriors and there also was Wind Waker HD. That's just the Zelda games, there were many other great games like Lego City Undercover. The experience with the Wii-U game pad was one of a kind, and many don't realize the great and unique experience they missed out on.
@@DaisukeFlamedramon Tbf, how is Botw better on Wiiu besides having Miiverse support?(Which was shut down some time after release, but is a valid element again due to slowly being rebuilt by fans)
@@lpfan4491 BotW is better on the Wii-U because the gamepad acted as the map. Also in addition to this, there are several shrines that were designed for the Wii-U and were fun on the Wii-U. You would have the game on the tv, and you would use the pad/controller to tilt and control the puzzle. Every time I've run into these on the Switch version it just takes me out of the game play and kind of ruins the experience because I have to stop what I'm doing and go switch to handheld mode and then do the puzzle which doesn't even act the same on the Switch handheld and was much better on the Wii-U gampad. It's kind of jarring when the game forces you to go from one screen to another. While the Wii-U worked in unison with the TV. It's also why I believe Hyrule Warriors is better on the Wii-U. I had so much fun with that playing co-op with my brother. I tried playing it co-op on the switch, and the stretched split screen just wasn't the same as having one person on the game pad and one on the tv.

i think the reason why it's taking so long for worthwhile games exclusive to these consoles is because of just how long it is to develop games that fully take advantage of these systems, that's why cross gen games lasted for a while, those games just took so long to make and were developed for those older consoles for a couple years by the time the new gen came out
Idk, pc games do it without as much hassle because the games don't need as much optimization. What is REALLY hard about developing for the new gen Xbox/ps is making really graphically intense games run well on their limited hardware.

The Switch is a stroke of marketing genius. Consistent releases of exclusives, third party and indie titles; being able to play it as a handheld or stationary console; porting numerous games from the Wii U; placing a focus on gameplay over narrative; catering to gamers of all ages; & offering controllers from just about every console generation to use have made it a fun, highly accessible, and eclectic system (despite the hardware limitations). Contrast that with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which both boast about graphical capabilities and non-existent load times, but have a barebones library of games to back it up with. It's no wonder Nintendo's blue ocean strategy continues to dominate, even though their competition's consoles are vastly superior in every way. It's like a baseball team bragging about having a higher budget for the season, but not leveraging any of those resources to secure high quality players on the field
I’ve bought so many more 3rd party games on the Switch than ever before, on top of the awesome and reliable 1st party library. Really hoping the Switch 2 gives me the chance to play ports of all the cool PS4 games the Switch couldn’t handle. Still can’t believe DOOM Eternal could get ported as well as it did.
Do not forget how Animal Crossing came out right before the pandemic began, meaning players all over had a nice game to relax with while the world was in turmoil.
Still waited until TOTK came out to pick up a switch. I was MASSIVELY underwhelmed, now I've only had the dang thing six months and the joycons won't sync when attached. Utter waste of money
@@zacziggarot Send it for repairs then, most Switches don't have that problem, and in my experience Nintendo are good at fixing things for free if they are under warranty.
This generation has made me realize how the best choice i made was making PC my primary gaming choice, especially with steamdeck instantly giving me my entire 1000+ game library day 1
I think it's important to point out that COVID did a lot to mess with the early life of these consoles in a way that the Switch dodge by already being a mature console on the market at the time. Supply chain and other issues meant it was difficult to get consoles in people's hands and that difficulty meant that developers were more incentivized to make cross-gen games instead of 9th gen exclusives. IIRC Both Ragnorok and The Horizon Sequel weren't meant to be cross-gen games initially, and it wasn't until the realities of COVID wrekt console availability that things changed. And this has further knock on effects because now developers have to divert resources or modify scope in order to make sure the last gen Port doesn't fall apart. It's possible that we're gonna get a large ramp-up to as the gen goes on, but I also wouldn't be surprised if this gen becomes a kind of "lost generation"
There was no proof about either of those titles being PS5 exclusives at all dude. I looked. Those two were developed before the PS5 was revealed to developers and it was only afterward where they would be ported over to them.
Is that a thermal joke since they have to pack a lot of power in their tiny footprints? Looking at ROG Ally (also unfortunately at max power 40 minutes of battery life?)
@@cinemapigeon4898 depends on your system, that's one of the many differences between the different models. I still have my original model steam deck and I often play 4-6 hours without it being plugged in to anything when NOT on 'max power modes' as many of the games I need don't need to run with max power. It's also usable docked just fine and I've used it docked a bunch to play stuff like mario party on my TV when I got people over, it's not like you can bring your playstation around with you and get more than 40 minutes of battery life (which is a rather low estimate as most of the systems run around 1-2 hours on max power unplugged) without being plugged in either. Also because it's designed well, the spots on it that DO get heated are areas of the system that humans will literally never touch. This goes for MOST handhelds like the lenovo legion go, steam deck OLED, etc. Comments like yours do remind me of the ones people had back when the console wars were a thing though (taking the worst possible scenario and pretending like it's the standard for a system), which further strengthens my beliefs.
@@Sizzyl I think the handheld PC systems are cool, I've researched them plenty, but they are expensive and still ultimately a bit weak (although that can be alleviated with upscaling tech like FSR, VRR, and what not). But yes, if you're playing the latest and best games on as powerful settings as possible, your battery life can literally be as bad as 40 minutes. They still need a generational leap in power+battery efficiency. The Steamdeck 2 will be amazing whenever that comes out, as Valve has said they're waiting for said generational leap in hardware. Also funny enough, I actually just got a Playstation Portal. I haven't used it yet, but if it works well for me, then that could be one of the best handhelds ever (some say it is). Baldur's Gate 3 at 1080p 60 fps. Now it's remote streaming, so there's a huge caveat there, but I think mostly any single player game should be super playable for most people. It does have much better battery life than dedicated handhelds, vastly better controller (it's just a dualsense with a screen), etc.. So it has its own benefits. It's an interesting compromise/idea of the handheld.
....WELL, KIND OF YES........THO......EVEN IF NINTENDO IS LOOKING FOR SUCCESS OF 3DS BUT STILL...........LOTS OF DOUBTS ABOUT THERE'LL BE A FAILURE OF WiiU, THO .....BECAUSE SITUATION IS LOOKING LIKE IT WAS BACK THEN WiiU WAS GETTING RELEASED.......
I believe that realism can sometimes hinder the creative process in game development. Nintendo focus on creating enjoyable and immersive experiences rather than striving for hyper-realistic graphics. However, I do have some concerns that if they were to shift their focus towards more detailed and realistic visuals, when they make Nintendo switch 2
For the realistic part, nah… Maybe for Metroid Prime and other exceptions. Games can look stylised *and* detailed (MK8 released in 2014 and still holds up today).
When I bought a switch in 2017, the fact it was a new system was very clear. It has better, bigger new experiences. I still remember playing Mario Odyssey in 2017 and Animal Crossing with friends in 2020. BOTW was revolutionary to open world games and Zelda as a whole and ToTK was a very good sequel, as was Luigi's Mansion 3 to one of Nintendo's best spin offs. Smash Bros Ultimate blew the previous smash games out of the water in terms of quality and content. Super Maro Wonder was an amazing and reinventive title for the entirety of the 2D Mario identity. Pikmin 4, Kirby Star Allies, 2 Mario Party titles, Splatoon 2 and 3, Super Mario Maker 2 , Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime Remastered, Mario and Rabbids, Super Mario RPG and with even more titles coming this year. It's so much I haven't even played a good amount of the ones listed, the switch will have games for me to come back to a good while after its successor. It did all of this without alienating the Wii U that it succeeded from, yes the Wii U's games were ported to the Switch as enhanced offers but that doesn't discount the fact those games were once exclusive titles. The Wii U didn't fail because the games were bad, it was just released at a time where graphics ruled the industry and it had really poor marketing. It only made sense to port these games to give them a second chance. I went from a PS4 to a PS5 in early December of last year. After about two months of owning a ps5, I can say I don't feel like I bought a new console but instead a performance upgrade. A very good performance upgrade that as a person who dosen't own or plan on owning a PC was worth the money, but that's it. If the rumors are true and Nintendo's next console is both a powerhouse that can efficiently run 3rd parties and has a similar astounding amount of exclusives under its belt, Sony will need to do a lot more to convince me to buy a PS6.
You forgot Xenoblade 1, 2 and 3 😱 and Astral Chain, Bayonetta 3, Fire Emblem, ... Switch's library is crazy. Not only are there tons of great Nintendo games, but it's the first Nintendo console in ages with massive 3rd party support.
I'm 32 (the NES being my first childhood console)... I finally bought a Switch, the year before last, (5 years after its launch?) ...100%, without doubt, I say it's the first console since the original Xbox and Gamecube that I felt wasn't just a glamorous-looking PC. It's become quite a spectacle in my home. Small (non-intimidating) wireless controllers, painless enough to get my (adult) family together for a game of Mario Party..... I had no expectations when I bought it, and it totally knocked my socks off, being able to click the controllers into the system, seamlessly going from TV to handheld... ingenious..... to have had a bit of child-like awe and wonder again in adulthood... magic..... priceless.
Hey that's amazing to hear... did u get the OG Red and Blue One or the OLED Switch, because I also consider getting one and I'm kinda troubled if the OLED is worth the extra $$
@@WeezyGR OLED, hands down. I literally walked out of GameStop with the OG version, slapped it in the middle of my living room..... that night, my family huddled around, I notify them of the OLED version... My father says "If _you_ don't buy it, I'll pay the difference >_> " I went back to GameStop and while trading it out, I was more attentive to the devices this time- Go have a look at the OG vs OLED screens _in person-_ HUGE difference... plus I hear the OLED JoyCons have less "stick drift" issues... 2 years later, mine are still A-OK (note that my siblings and I play Smash Bros strictly on our OG Gamecube controllers, wouldn't risk the JoyCons haha).
Depends. If you're going to have it constantly plugged into a TV, the OLED is the most pointless upgrade you can get. If you're buying it solely for a portable experience, the Lite is pocketable, the OLED is not. So it really comes down to whether slightly deeper blacks are worth the extra price. (I own a Lite and had an OLED; I kept the Lite and sold the OLED since as nice as it was, my TV is OLED, so I don't need an OLED display that I'm never going to use, or a handheld that isn't pocketable)
I think the power of the current gen consoles is actually their main weakness. It encourages Microsoft and Sony to make bigger and more expensive games in order to justify the new hardware's existence over the last gen. This leads to less console exclusives. Nintendo's focus on less powerful hardware may prove to be a big advantage in this regard.
It’s actually the opposite, with the power of current gen consoles, making games is way easier now. The reason it’s taking so long to get those games is because of covid
@@TheBaxesgames like HFR are complimentary, they aren't really made to make profit (notice the $30 price tag) or move the needle in console sales besides some internet points and a few awards. Sony has console exclusive indies and smaller games locked down already too.
@@dsidsidsi1000Lmao what? Sure COVID played a part but we can't keep using this excuse forever. Making something small scale has more headroom if it was made with current gen only in mind yes but when you talk about PlayStation studios quality and trying to scale up to get the most out of it while having VRR/high frame rate modes, detailed environments and characters etc. this is on top of not spending too much so they can make money from potential sales. This is one of the reasons why Insomniac is mostly a marvel studio until the 2030s. It's just too risky until you're sure there's an audience to buy something and that has always been the case but now the amount of people it takes to make certain types of games have ballooned and the market wants certain types of games with graphical expectations, these publishers aren't making games to lose money please always remember this.
The 9th generation feels like they just improoved performance, we were used to 30 fps and 60 being mostly for fps games. Then 9th gen and we are talking about 120 hz 4k gaming (altho with variable resulution)
Remember when Microsoft said the series X could play games at 120 fps? Yet most of the recent next gen games not only look worse, but they're often capped at 30 fps on the thing. (Starfield and redfall)
The worst thing about the Switch being so underpowered isn't the graphics or framerate or what-have-you. Instead it's because of the amount of time it takes to port games to it. I remember waiting over a year for DBZ FighterZ to come to the Switch and when it finally did, boy were those load times long. Unreal Engine has become a phrase I dread now. That's IF you get a port at all. We only ever got the first Dark Souls on Switch, not even 2 or 3.
Well, it uses an old graphic chip from 2015. In 2015 it was the best chip for mobile graphics and had no equal, in 2017 it also still was one of the best chips for mobile graphics because of its dedicaded shader pipelines that other mobile chips like snapdragon didnt have. So at the time it was the best hardware for a mobile console. But now in 2024 its old and has no chance against modern hardware.
This is why Handheld PC's should become more popular. My first Game on Steam Deck was Batman Arkham Origins. A game any 9th or even 8th Gen Console could even dream of receiving a Port becouse Warner Bros. Hates the idea of acknowledging its existince.
@@applehazeva2739 Yeah I hope Steam Deck explodes to actually compete more directly with Switch. I have had my Steam Deck almost a year and I wouldn't dream of going back to Switch. Plus Valve seems to treat their consumers really well so far. If they can work out a few more kinks with gen 2 Steam Deck then I think they stand a chance. If they can take over a sizable portion of the handheld market, then I could see them graduating to developing a more powerful home console system based on the Deck to compete with Sony and Microsoft for those that don't want to build their own gaming PCs.
Yeah fighting games especially have it rough on the Switch. Most games are focused on PlayStation and PC because that's what most play on. Xbox is lucky if it's a major fighting game. Then the few games that do show up generally have a low playerbase (obviously not Smash) and online play is usually bad (including Smash).
Something left unsaid was the fact that many kids that would be playing all of these games are playing Fortnite or some live service game instead. While microsoft isn't "doing anything", they have a 250$ console that can play fortnite at 120fps. I completely agree with every point, however I think both of us are fitting the current gen into the template of the consoles of years past, when actually they're just PCs on extremely walled off gardens.
This is so true… 3 of my friends own a console for fortnight only… 1 has a series s and two have Xbox one Ss I got given a ps4 Pro and I only play fortnight (with those friends) but mainly GT7. Meanwhile my 2070 super/Ryzen 3600x gaming PC is solely for Starfield and BG3 these days. My two kids (9 and 5) play the switches all the time though.
This gen is well disappointing. Consoles struggling no way they can do a AAA game with 4K native at 60fps, then there’s raytracing which it simply doesn’t have the power to do. The norm in quality seems to be 1440 native at 30fps or slightly upscaled which is a long way from native
I still see no reason for buying PS5. The only game on this console that is not available on PS4 and I want to play it is the new Final Fantasy. Where are any new spectacular IP's? 3 years have passed and nothing. The console itself is not even getting cheaper.
"...which that point has only been further exacerbated by how little graphics and technology have advanced with each passing of the torch." That's what made growing up in the 80s so awesome! I remember thinking that Atari's original console was as good as it could ever get; then the NES proved me wrong, and with each console afterwards, our minds were blown! It was a very exciting era of gaming for quite awhile there. Ah, good times! These days, it's basically "The water is more watery! The leaves blow in the wind! The resolution is a little bit sharper!" It's just not as big of a leap as it used to be.
The main problem I'm seeing with each new generation is that the development time for new releases gets longer and longer. At this point it isn't unusual for a big "AAA" title to take 5+ years to develop. That of course means that if a game when into active development when the Xbox X and PS5 where announced, we'd still have a year left before it releases. Besides, you don't need all that tech anyway. Games from the PS3 and Xbox 360 still look great today and high profile ports to the Switch like NieR Automata and Persona 5 Royal show that you don't need to sacrifice that much to get a game looking good on the underpowered system.
@@NetBattler I finish Xenogears for PS1 2 weeks ago, graphics were not great, but it was so fun and the story was amazing. I can live with the sub-par graphics as long as the overall game is good, I'm actually turning to indies more often than not now.
@@NetBattler I didn't even end up finishing Spiderman 2. It felt like a game I'd already played before... Twice. And the story was more mediocre, crammed, and rushed than both of those games especially the first Spiderman which had a lot of cool villains and moments. Thankfully I got it for free because a buddy had an extra code, otherwise I would've felt like it was a waste of money. I might go back to it, but eventually I think I'm just going to uninstall it and buy back some space to install other games.
10:01 comparing the whole 9th generation to the wii u is so depressingly apt, and in 10 to 15 years i'm confident this generation will probably be remembered as a dark age for the entire industry, as gamers turn away from AAA slop and the bigger companies in the industry begin to collapse under their own weight
Honestly the Wii U still has a nostalgic, novel appeal even to this day owing to the controller and some of the exclusives which Nintendo did not port over to the switch, not to mention, it's the only console that allows one to play virtually any game from generations prior to it, especially once we include hombrew enchancements, can't say the same for either of the 9th gen consoles
Lego City Undercover I beat 100% on the Wii U and it was amazing. I loved the controller and how you scanned stuff in the game with the controller. @@govardhanposina17
The reason Nintendo is so strong is because 80% of the games on there are exclusives and 100% of Nintendo published games are exclusives. Zelda, metroid, mario, donkey kong, kirby, mariokart, smash bros, xenoblade and wayyy more. Nintendo owns so many exclusive IPs that you HAVE to buy their consoles if you want to play the games. Not to mention they have a closed ecosystem so most of their games are super high quality and they dont rely on micro transactions and shit like that.
I recently got myself an Xbox 360 purely because there is more variety and fun to be had in its game library than anything I've seen on the market for current generation consoles.
Coincidentally I was just looking at 360s on ebay because I want to go back and play all the halo games I missed. Only ever played 2 and Reach. Never got around to playing the others because I've always been a PlayStation guy. On that note lately I've been collecting and playing a bunch of PS2 games that I missed back in the day and it's the most fun I've had playing a game since Spider-Man 2018
I bought a slim on OfferUp for 20 bucks for the same reason. Only use it with games that are on no other system however as even the slims are susceptible to red ringing. If a 360 game is available on Xbox one I’ll play it on that. Despite being heavily underpowered, the launch Xbox ones are fairly indestructible.
The best thing about the XBOX 360 is its cheap games and large library. Walk into any 3rd party reseller and you'll find rows of £2 XBOX games lining the shelves, and the graphics on each of these aren't too outdated. To a "gwaphicx" gamer, you'll hate it because it's like 480p vs 1080p, and most of the shooters take from Gears of War. Regardless though, it's way cheaper, legal, and hours of fun.
Bought my Switch 3 years ago and I'm still playing it constantly, best thing about it is that gets alot of old games as well new ones in the library all the time. I was playing KOTOR and other than PC you can't really play that game in a good state anywhere and the fact we've got those as well of alot of PS2 games just makes it a Beast
And in the Desert stood 2 crumpled Bricks, half broken and surrounded by sand. Engraved on a plaque beneath read the following: “Gaze Upon My Games Ye Mighty and Despair, for There are no More Exclusives to Make!”
it's almost like XBSX is trying to do something good for consumers. Can't wait till they backtrack the idea of getting their games to everyone instead of just people who buy their flagship consoles.
@@SunnyDeLite I think that they're only doing it to get more customers. If Microsoft ever takes first place I can promise that Game Pass will ramp up in cost. They already halted their backwards compatibility program.
THEORY: In most cases, the PlayStation consoles were so popular that third-party studios didn't bother with porting their games to other consoles. This was prevalent with the PS2 and later the PS4. Games like GTA, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, etc remained "exclusive" on Sony consoles or released much later down the timeline for other consoles. With the industry becoming more competitive, a lot of these franchises appear on other consoles more often, and now Sony actually has to rely on their first-party offerings. This is why the PS5 lineup seems so slim compared to previous generations. And the issue is made worse with games like GoW Ragnarok, Miles Morales, and Horizon 2 also releasing on PS4.
It's been the case ever since PS1. In the PS1 and PS2 era lots of big games were sponsored by Sony, which in turn either got exclusivity in Western markets (many PS1 "exclusives" were also available on the Saturn in Japan, and in lots of cases the Saturn version was better), exclusivity on consoles or full exclusivity. Then, when both consoles got massive installed bases and dozens of millions of users, many devs only developed on PS1 and later PS2 because most of the market was there, development costs were soaring and portings required lots of resources, so the benefits of developing and releasing their games on other platforms didn't always justify the costs. In the PS3 era, with MS outspending Sony, they had to change their strategy and take a more proactive and involved approach to exclusivity deals.
also their consoles have so much power that they need to make things detailed, but game dev is so expensive and they can only release a few games first party.
Also software has democratised more over the past few years, so porting has become a lot easier. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X uses AMD RDNA2, which I suspect makes the porting process easier.
That's because near the end of the PS4 era Playstation got a new CEO who hates Japan for some reason and its HQ moved to California. All of those games you listed were from Japanese studios except for Rockstar, so you do the math.
@@mattia1026 The Saturn was really only better for 2D games, and generally only one game per series got a release for it because even in Japan it started dying out earlier than the PS1. I love the Saturn but that's just the way it is, it wasn't primarily designed for 3D games.
This kinda hurts since I waited for the ps5 to return to back to the selves and waited to save enough and bought it 2 years o Ago only to learn that's it's already in it last stages. Man, at this point, , I should just upgrade my pc.
Nintendo's consistent release schedule in terms of console launches could have something to do with most of the big hitters being Nintendo's own game development teams. Sure MS and Sony have bought studios before, but it doesn't match the absolute unification of operations within Nintendo because they've hired talent into their studio from the beginning, whereas MS and Sony buy independent companies that already had a way of doing things, and getting them to settle on a rolling release schedule is probably much harder than we realise. Plus Western games for the most part are more Hollywood and storytelling in spirit while Nintendo focuses on the essence of play & toys and those two have different development challenges, one of them taking more time and money than the other.
Plus, Nintendo rarely buys studios. Any studios you THINK Nintendo owns, 80% chance they’re actually separate and that Nintendo has such a strong bond with them that they may as well be Nintendo owned. Nintendo only bought Next Level Games in 2021 when the studio decided it was time to be bought out. Nintendo knew what a valuable asset they were, so they swooped in.
But... Nintendo literally makes the same game over and over again and slaps on the 'seal of quality'. I don't want a Switch because it's all "been there, done that", why should I play Mario again when you're spending £50 on a gimmick? I'd rather get a Steamdeck tbh, with its "backwards compatibility" (wink wink)
Yall forget how many dev studios have been bought out and then shutdown. Sooo many of these massive companies have bought out the competition and then shut them down while absorbing the talent into the primary company.
Nobody has stronger IPs than Nintendo. Thats always been their ace in the hole. Not to mention portability with the Switch gave them something nobody else could match.
Hey, that's not fair! What about Shooty McShooter 7 for Playstation, or the Shoots McGee franchise on XBox? I need to pay $570 _right now_ for more pixels on my guns, or I won't have any fun in life
I think Nintendo maintains their IPs too. All the cool playstation franchises i used to love are pretty much gone or neglected. Anything not making maximum returns is gone, they basically gutted UK game dev
I got my PS5 about a year and a half ago solely because my PS4 completely stopped working. The games I have gotten on PS5 have been mid so I’ve mostly been sticking to cross gen games like Destiny 2. It’s nice having the new gen because it runs faster but honestly if my old console didn’t die then I wouldn’t have replaced it.
This generation has finally solidified what started in the 7th gen, continued on the 8th, and now finally showed up in the 9th in a more definitive version... "Just get a PC". There are barely any console exclusives anymore and consoles are basically PC's hardware-wise nowadays. I'm not complaining, I moved to PC about 15 years ago and have been looking into buying a console to own both for years, but I always end up upgrading my PC instead since I can play pretty much anything on it, with any control method I choose, with a home theater, and any screen I choose (TV or monitor).
30fps is a console standard. Many games on the gamecube were 30fps, almost all games on ps3 and xbox360 were 30fps, a bunch of games on the ps4 and xbone were 30fps. I strongly remember around the ps4 launch they were trying to sell this whole 30fps thing as a "cinematic experience" I legitimately think MS and Sony got taken of guard by the amount of people that wanted to play at 60fps.
I haven't had a console since the 360 until I got the Series X and I am truly astonished at the lack of modern games from major studios I want to play or enjoy

Mostly because sadly this has been a generation of remakes, rereleases and remasters. Theyre easy cash grabs
I think it will once GTA 6 releases, it's what we'll all be playing for the next few years
Right?
@@Max-yu2yd I dont think one game can justify the purchase of a console or make a console “worth it” tbh. Especially people like me who just do the single player campaign and then move on to another game. We need more sequels/exclusives and new IPs and not just remakes/remasters
the problem is that the lifespan of the systems last the same as they’ve always been, but games are taking longer and longer to make.
This, and add Covid to the mix, this gen got off to a rocky start.

Exactly which besides the exclusive issue is why console gaming is now obsolete.
I mean it's been trending in this direction really even before 8th gen but now there's literally no good reason to opt for one unless you're just getting it as a Christmas present for your kid or something along those line's.

My God, the Dunkey joke became real
Nintendo's underpowered hardware has ironically saved them from many things ailing the industry right now. Making a game with a realistic scope in mind is important. 5+ year dev times and million dollar budgets isn't healthy or feasible for every game, and we're seeing the effects of that now.
Nintendo's priority is making games, it's what people want.
If it's underpowered how is it expensive still
@@Sykxezn Nintendo knows their name brings confidence in most people.
The Steam Deck is quite a bit weaker than a PS5 but cost about the same.
this generation is fantastic at allowing you to play older games and clear the backlog.

If the selling point of your system is "best grafix", then you risk diluting that brand by releasing titles that aren't best grafix.
Playing Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 at 4k/60fps makes it feel like a new AAA release .

Cant believe we are almost 4 years into this gen, already half of its life. And very few games to be excited about, its sad
I have literally missed nothing since deciding not to buy PS5/X
Good games come out every year. Why the heck does it matter if they're exclusives or not?
The majority of people would only ever buy 1 console, so its common for them to choose an xbox or PlayStation.
the Wii U's issues are arguabIy the opposite of the PS5s
hey we have a Iotta reaI good excIusive first-party games! and the worst way to pIay IiteraIIy anything eIse and are often missing big third-party reIeases
whereas the PS5 is hey we have Iike 2 first-party games not on PC (yet), but we're a great way to pIay IiteraIIy everything eIse (even this isn't true these days with how degraded performance modes are becoming)

@@64bitmodels66 this hasn't been true for Sony for more than a decade, though.

The best way to define this gen is with the name of an episode of breaking bad:
A crazy handful of nothing
Being in this generations 4th year is crazy, feels like it should still be the first.
Pikmin 4 looks good!

Because of the limited hardware of the Switch, I didn't found the PS4 and Xbox one outdated for a couple years after 2020. The fact that in 2023 there still are a lot of Triple A titles getting last gen ports isn't suprising for me. These two consoles really aged that well in my opinion.
Basically the 8th and 9th generation consoles are more similar to Steam Machines (full fledged computers), while the Xbox are more computer type than the PlayStation (The Xbox One and Series shares the same operating system based on Windows 10/11 and their programs executables are equal and use an universal API, making trivial create games to both consoles).
the xbox one and ps4 was just poorly future proofed like it did not account for the advent of 4k and VR
Not wanting to join the rat race that is graphics is one thing but to come out of the gate so underpowered is bad for developers who have to work with garbage hardware to make it run half decent.
a console doesn't have to be powerful to be good it should have good games
Facts
Metroid (1986) on Steam Deck is ballz!
I honestly do not care about console power. I have a Switch and a gaming PC, and I feel like that's a PERFECT setup.

Atleast rockstar used it to make gta 6 because gta keeps on going.

Yeah, switch was helped on launch due to them having breath of the wild being in devolpment for wii u but they moved it over
Given that Vita whas a failure because despite all the power there where no games to run on it and for playing your PSP games you where supposed to buy them all again, I doubt Nintendo does this mistake too. They already said they offer backwards compatibility to Switch so both the new players as the current players will switch over as they can use their current library on a better system.

And I think we started seeing that in 2023, which had tons of great games. Many of which weren't on PS4 and One.
Of course, if the games aren't pushing any technical boudries, you might as well release it for the Ps4 and Xbox one too.
If I buy the most powerful console I want this console to use it's power 100% of the time, I didn't buy ps5 to play games that could run on cheap mobile phone.
Lol so you just want to play 3rd person story games over and over? What a NPC.@@tron0150
True
People complain about exclusives, then complain about not having exclusives. WTF.
Exactly like this
I will never understand why people claim that games not being exclusive was ever helpful.
Some of my best gaming don't even come from AAA games; they come from indie games, which don't rely on super realistic graphics to be good.
42. And yep, I'm with you too. I was saying this back when the PS2 was coming out. "If they're spending all that time trying to make them look more human, what happens when they do?" I had hoped that the next logical step is, "what can you use extra processing power for, other than graphics," but apparently not
There was a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto in EGM's 100th issue article.
Who knows.
Not while pokemon is around, I suppose.
no they wont. they would be stupid to do that, and i think they are smarter than that
I doubt it, Nintendo can generally thrive off the games they make now.
All except for physical ownership. When consoles stop releasing physical copies I will move completely to pc.

I think it’s because of these two consoles coming out during the pandemic thus affecting development of several titles and Sony and Microsoft have realized there is a massive market on PC. I’ve even seen some people who think it might be worth it for Nintendo to try releasing some games on PC, likely for preservation.

If you count Windows OS as a console, its got the best exclusives, a near-infinite library, limitless ways to play, Steam has support for every modern controller,
the fact these other consoles haven't given us any reason to play them besides playing your backlog slightly better is absolutely crazy
Exactly, I'm still satisfied with my ps4 pro
@@Chris-db5gy30fps lmao
I tried playing it co-op on the switch, and the stretched split screen just wasn't the same as having one person on the game pad and one on the tv.
yes thx for bringing this up. 9:00 I guess he didn't know that most games he showed that the switch got in his first year were ports from the wii u with some upgrades.
hearing him talk about that he doesn't like how new games still release on both old and new consoles funny.
i think the reason why it's taking so long for worthwhile games exclusive to these consoles is because of just how long it is to develop games that fully take advantage of these systems, that's why cross gen games lasted for a while, those games just took so long to make and were developed for those older consoles for a couple years by the time the new gen came out
Idk, pc games do it without as much hassle because the games don't need as much optimization. What is REALLY hard about developing for the new gen Xbox/ps is making really graphically intense games run well on their limited hardware.
Bingo

I honestly don’t get why people use or play on Consoles, they are just often super low spec. You can get 4X better specs in a PC with the same price in a sale.

I’ve come to respect Nintendo infinitely more during the current gen, than during its own gen. Nintendo made the right move of squeezing absolutely everything out of the lesser power.
I would say it's less marketing genius, more just product genius.

Ps5 and series x were launched too soon
There was no proof about either of those titles being PS5 exclusives at all dude. I looked. Those two were developed before the PS5 was revealed to developers and it was only afterward where they would be ported over to them.

The 9th gen of consoles is actually in the handheld PC market, and it's heating up.
Is that a thermal joke since they have to pack a lot of power in their tiny footprints? Looking at ROG Ally (also unfortunately at max power 40 minutes of battery life?)
to be fair, nothing is stopping the next gen being nintendo handeld competing with a fully established steam deck

My father says "If _you_ don't buy it, I'll pay the difference >_> "
I went back to GameStop and while trading it out, I was more attentive to the devices this time- Go have a look at the OG vs OLED screens _in person-_ HUGE difference... plus I hear the OLED JoyCons have less "stick drift" issues...
I originally just bought it for breath of the wild but it didn't take long for it to make my Ps4 obsolete.
Those astronomical budgets also incentivize playing it very safe with those games, making it more likely they'll end up unremarkable and forgettable.
They really need to encourage more games in the style of Hi-Fi rush. More experimental games with lower budgets

I would like to know that you have to pay to be in a developer program first in order to even just port your game to the switch officially.

More like last age rather than dark age. Consoles are dying.
Meta Quest 3 has better exclusives than Xbox Series, lol.

This kinda hurts since I waited for the ps5 to return to back to the selves and waited to save enough and bought it 2 years o
Ago only to learn that's it's already in it last stages.
@@scrittle 😐👍
Yall forget how many dev studios have been bought out and then shutdown. Sooo many of these massive companies have bought out the competition and then shut them down while absorbing the talent into the primary company.
yep, and they also ended up firing or driving away the talent, companies care more about intelectual property than talent these days.

@@Kitty255Again Lol TOTK is definitely not an L. You have to be crazy to think that.

1000's of dollars later. Meanwhile, since ps1, ive spent 2000$ total on games in 15 years

@@sinchuf3367 I didn't even spend that much on games in those years. I spent more when I had consoles.
As an Xbox lifer since Halo, I feel let down that the console has become a budget PC that gets gimped ports running at 30 fps.
"But at least you got astonished" - Microsoft, probably
Nintendos game library is an astronomical unit ahead of both PlayStation/xbox combined
Yes. But they also only produce toaster-games...
