This black screen happens while trying to upgrade from windows 7 to 10. When you restart the laptop, it undo's the install and puts the computer back to Windows 7. Is there a way to fix that prior to upgrading? The computer boots fine as 7.
Other than making sure updates are done. If you can't get updates because it's W7, maybe roll back to previous build first if possible, then upgrade. Good question worth following up with

I keep trying this and it ONLY results in a screen that allows the safe mode options or start windows normally and they all result in the same condition: black screen with white cursor. Any advice on how to get past this?
I would download a Windows installer, boot to it and see if it lets you get to a command prompt, where you could run chkdsk, SFC or even system restore. Here's how to do that: ruclips.net/video/5naOPxd6vsI/видео.html
Keep me posted as to your results :)
Does the reset option will erase all the stuff i stored in like drives and stuff? Like will this erase all the memory? Like the stuff stored?
A reset gives you the option to keep or delete your personal files
Hey! Thanks for the video. I want to ask you shomething. My laptop is just have the first option in f8 restore menu or whatever it called. What should i do?
If it is Windows 7 or older, you can use f8 to get into safe mode and then follow the steps. If for some reason you have a restore option, that should do it also. Let me know how it goes!
@@AskYourComputerGuy I followed, get into the safe mode and the laptop is asked for language and the profile. After i do that i see only the restor option, no commans or somethings. How can i send you a video?

Have windows 10. Can get into winre, cant get into normal mode or safe mode. And recently it stopped booting winre. If I don't have a thumb drive, is there a solution without it? The auto repair thing doesn't work.
Your only other option might be DVD, but if you can't change the boot order, probably won't make much difference in your situation. You might have to call in a pro to back up your files, then wipe the drive and start from scratch :(
Thank you so much. You really saved me

Great video, I did get the same problem on an asus laptop with windows 10 home edition, after trying everything with no luck an error show up ( LogonUI.exe - application error) anyway couldn’t not get it fix, I did check the hard drive for errors and no luck, data still there but I have hard time trying to accessing it it was really slow, make me thing hard drive must be bad. Do you think this is a virus problem?
With loginui.exe, it could be. I'd definitely run a system file checker (from command prompt, type "SFC /scannow")....but when your login GUI is damaged, you're likely looking at a Windows reload. But you might get lucky, definitely try it first!
I just had a Windows Update “could not complete, undoing changes”
Brand new computer (11th gen i7) is now stupid slow, takes 5 minutes to execute a command prompt, open up the settings menu, etc. Now when I try to do the update in settings, after about 5 minutes it gives me black screen. Any ideas? Happy to explain more if necessary.
Hard to say. Could be software or hardware at this point. If brand new, I would go ahead and run a factory recovery to eliminate hardware. If it ends up hardware (most likely drive), submit warranty claim or refund/exchange. I always try to eliminate one or the other right off the bat...too many variables otherwise

i put in the command codes as i had checked everything else prior but it says that ot failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50, what to do after that ?
That usually indicates a failing drive. Which would also explain your black screen and cursor. I'd pull the drive and have someone backup your files immediately. You can read more about that message here:

Hey "Ask Your Computer Guy", I have a Dell XPS 8300 PC win 7, and today after upgrading some software, my screen turned BLACK and the icons vanished, however, it is still working and the taskbar icons are visible. Do you have an idea how to get the desktop icons back as well as the blue Windows wallpaper? Thanks
Try this. Very similar symptoms, works for most! ruclips.net/video/3G3ZsuPtYzw/видео.html
@@AskYourComputerGuy That is the same video above showing the computer not working. My computer was working and is currently working fine, it's just that the screen turned black and all the desktop icons have disappeared?
Sorry, you're right. So does it go black and then start working again or just stay black? Sounds like the explorer shell might be corrupted. Hard to say if you tried all the steps in the video and still having the same issue. I would probably do SFC /scannow first, then an in-place reinstall to repair the shell based on what you've told me
What about a Windows 10? I was doing a systems update and the battery ran down as the updates were installing, now the logo loads but gets stuck on a black screen with the cursor
Some of the fixes might apply to both. I'd watch this video instead for Windows 10:

Hi you dropped this 👑
What about a black screen with no cursor? A virus attacked and disabled my PC out of the blue yesterday morning. I stupidly let my virus protection lapse because it interferred with my music editing software and I guess that was when the virus struck. I was able to try and get to a restore point. The message I received said the scan was successful. But it was after this that I received a black screen without a cursor. Could it be that there is no longer any Windows software left on the PC? I cannot get into the PC at all at this point. it appears totally disabled. Should I try to reinstall Windows 10? This seems like a more serious problem. Using the Ctrl+Windows icon+Shift +8 command has no effect. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
So the desktop appears but never loads Windows, and you have no cursor at all? Is that correct? Do you have your files backed up? If so, a Windows refresh (or reinstall in Windows 7 and older) would be my first fix, after getting your files safely off the machine
No desktop appears. It's just a black screen with no cursor.
Sounds like Windows corruption. Do you have a Windows installation disco where you could reinstall? Or at least get to troubleshooting utilities? If not, here's how:

hey, i can’t even open task manager or anything, the only keys that work are f1 - f12 please help
If F8 doesn't even work (safe mode menu), your Windows is likely too damaged to fix. Best to reinstall Windows
Hey @Ask Your Computer Guy,
I followed all the steps and run the /f chkdsk.. it said there was an empty space or file in mappig i think and then it said windows fixed the issue but then at end of the page it said it didnt transfer the dats status 50.
I saw the link u suggest another person with same problems and it says i have to reinstall windows. How do i do that since i cant access my pc except the command prompt
Status 50 certainly explains the black screen, and also usually indicates bad drive sectors, which means the hard drive is damaged or failing. Even reinstalling Windows only buys you a finite amount of time. Best bet is to get your data off the drive using Hirens Boot CD XP mode, grab your data and replace that faulty drive.
@@AskYourComputerGuy thank you for the really fast response sir!
I guess my issue wont be fixied easily then if i have to change the hard drive.
Can you please also tell me how to reinstall the windows 7, if thats gonna work cause, i dont think i can get the hard drive fixed now..so i will take all te time the reinstalling gives me.
You will either need to access the recovery partition on the drive, which could be damaged already, or a Windows 7 CD/DVD installation disc. Just understand that the more your use that drive, the more potential damage you will cause to any files you need to recover. If you don't have a DVD but have a legal copy installed, you can find Windows 7 installation media on just about any torrent site and they will activate legally through Microsoft
@@AskYourComputerGuy okay, i will try that option then.
Thank you so much!
My pleasure...good luck!
The first option wasnt on my pc i dont now why but it is Windows 10 ? And when i click all the options i Can click it is still showing Black screen
This video was made for a Windows 7 PC. It will work going backwards in versions but you will need to boot to Windows troubleshooting to get into troubleshooting screens. I have made several videos showing how to do this, specifically the video that shows you how to bypass a Windows 10 password. That should help you
Thank ur a life saver
My pleasure!
would the system restore work for messing up settings or possibly a virus
A system restore is always a good option if settings are changed or damaged. It won't remove a virus, but can put Windows back to a state before the virus infected you. At least it gives you the chance to remove it that way
Tnk u so much🧡, u r osm😊😊
Hi! So I tried all these except for the last option, because I didn't have thst option available to me, and unfortunately nothing had worked. 🙁 This problem started yesterday when my monitor (a TV kind) couldn't pick up a signal (for some reason it does this sometimes, and sometimes removing and then inserting the HDMI cable fixes it, but if not, I have to force the comiter to shut down).
Yesterday, it was the second option, but my PC wanted to do a scan due to the way I had shut it down as opossed to the way you SHOULD shut a PC down, which isn't holding down the power button, but seeing my screen was mostly black, I can see where I'd put my cursor to shut it down the normal way.
Honestly, it could be a virus, and I don't know what to do. 🙁 Can someone help!? 🙏
Should probably mention that I'm using Windows 7. I also noticed this video isn't the newest so I don't know if to expect any help any time soon. 🙁 This really sucks.
If none of these steps help, looks like you might be needing to reinstall Windows. Most of these steps in the video will fix the majority of fixable problems. But at some point, you hwve to just throw in the towel and start over 🤷♂️🥲
Thank you, I though my computer died since it said it was the blank screen of DEATH
Thanks bro.. the system restore worked for me...
It happened after a power outage in my area... it might have corrupted some system files...
But who knows, im not an expert
As long as it worked, that's what matters most!
bro can u plz tell me which file u restored might your and my was same prob
@@RakeshKumar-hb5tq well you have to get to the restore menu first. That's the critical part. I usually only go back to the point where I know everything was working properly. System restore points can get damaged or corrupted too, so if you go back to your latest restore point and it doesn't work, try again and go one point further back. And even if Windows says the restore failed, reboot anyway nice seen 1000 times where it tells me it failed and I reboot and everything works. It will even tell me it failed after it successfully boots lol

My Issue is system update do not turn off your computer. but i accidentally remove the power source. and i try to reopen my computer 🖥️ appears with consor. ctrl alt del not working safe mode not working but repair your computer .is working
I have had to use the "repair your computer" option many times in one sitting, even though Windows didn't act like it was doing anything, often times repeating that over and over again works. There is also the option of removing the c:\windows\software distribution folder (where Windows stores the downloaded updates)...that gets a bit more complicated, but almost always does the trick
Mine also was the same issue about system update then I switched it off since I saw it was talking alot of time
It Works,Thanks from india!
Thank you ….it worked
Awesome news! Thx!
same problem safe mode doesnt load and also i dont get the Repair computer option :( please help. after many restarts when i did restore still goes into black screen when i shutdown and switch on next time.
Your situation may be advanced. These fixes can't always resolve corrupted windows. If you've tried them all, it may be time for a factory restore :(
@@AskYourComputerGuy Do i have to format and install windows again. What about my data such as game profiles :(
Yes. Even if you did a factory restore, all personal data would be lost. You would need to remove the drive and backup your user info, or boot to a Hirens CD so you can access your files and copy them off to a flash drive.
@@AskYourComputerGuy if windows currupted. How about formating only windows partition and reinstalling
Yes, if you aren't concerned about your personal files. The Windows installer will let you delete partitions during the setup, so that's an extra step you don't need to do, unless you just want to.
Thanks man ❤❤❤❤❤❤
My pleasure!
I hope you read and respond to this ASAP, (I'm not too tech savy, so please bear with me), am having trouble with rebooting my Dell Laptop.
I followed the steps in the video, but at the end of the repair installation (i chose the option to fix existing windows installation issues without affecting personal files); a small window titled "Install Windows" pops up and says:
"Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows ok this computer, restart the installation".
I can't install anything or go back to the desktop because the setup keeps repeating itself and the message continuously pops up if I accept of dismiss it, please help :(
I am still able to bring up the boot menu tho. What should I do from there?
So basically you can't boot Windows or get to any troubleshooting menus at all? The only thing you can get is the Windows installation box?
Yes I can't bring up the troubleshooting menu again for some reason. It keeps cutting back to the repair installation where the small window pops back up (I'm stuck in a 'boot-loop' if you will, after the Dell Logo appears on screen. And I don't know how to bring up the windows installation box.
The main objective is to not affecf my personal files on the laptop.
@Chinchinnnnn if you have the option to get your files backed up, I'd reinstall Windows as soon as you can. Sounds like you have some serious Windows going on 🥲

Have you tried to get into safe mode?
Is it an issue of windows? Or problem of my computer, because after i update i experience it.
It is not uncommon after a Windows update for this to happen. Many times with the Windows updates you just have to restart multiple times or get into safe mode for Windows to sort of address its own issues. Sometimes it's malware, sometimes Windows. Sometimes it's just updates. You just have to start with the most likely thing and work your way to a solution
@@AskYourComputerGuy thank you for the advice
What if my computer doesn't appear anything but they show me that it's powered but when I press power button the screen isn't turned on
I would still start with safe mode. If you can't get your screen to come on at all, you could have bigger issues, such as LCD or video output failure. Or it could just be that your system is stuck in hibernation. Hard to say, but trying safe mode is always a good start to see what actually works and what doesn't
Do you have nothing on the screen even from your first cold turn-on and POST?
Im on desktop windows 10 and i watched and read about 7 diff tutorrials and none work

Unfortunately, some systems are beyond repair. You may have to consider reinstalling Windows. If you are on Windows 7 or older, F8 will always show a menu. Won't always let you boot from it, but the menu itself is not susceptible to damage. I've never seen it not display

I clicked on "Show only on 1" The screen went black. No solutions helped. Since I also have my computer output connected to my TV, I went and turned on my TV. The problem disappeared. Weird, huh? It's that damned dual display setting that I still can't figure out. Watch out for it. Can you give us advice on that area?
Assuming this is a recent problem, and not a "since day one" problem, first suggestion would be to remove video driver. Let Windows reinstall and reevaluate after that. Always start with the most basic, simple solution. Keep me posted
