How to remove backlight bleed - The only proven method

  • I got the Asus PG279Q monitor - the famous backlight bleed gamble panel monstrosity. I knew what the risks are, but since it's such a great monitor, I decided to take a leap of faith.
The unit I got had the average amount of backlight bleed present in 3/4 corners, mostly in the top-right corner. Nothing too dramatic. Not even close to some horrible examples you can see online.
    SOLUTION:
Step 1. Start the backlight bleed test on youtube and go full-screen.
Step 2. Find the backlight bleed source. How to find the source?
    • Imagine BB like a flashlight. The light source and a less-bright area around it. The source is the screen point from where the light source comes out and disperse BB around, creating a big area of the screen with a brighter color tone. You should easily pinpoint these, as they are close to the edge.
Step 3. When you locate these, pinch the plastic frame RIGHT NEXT to the BB source. Pinch, as put the frame between your thumb and pointer finger and start applying the slightest pressure ever, and SLOWLY, throughout 5 seconds or more (so GRADUALLY) start increasing the pressure on the frame until you see BB is retracting. Once it's completely gone (so it looks like the normal screen section) you then HOLD that pressure for 3-5 seconds. Release.
Step 4. Repeat until it's gone. It's always a bit less noticeable upon each cycle.
It can take some time. So, whenever you can, turn on the backlight bleed test and make sweet love to it.
I find that holding part is the essential one, as it's like that the frame is "accepting" this new shape/position.
You will hear some slight cracking sounds. This means that the frame is simply not perfect, few millimetres bigger than the screen, so these are not perfect. Cracking means it's adjusting and fitting in those tiny joints or whatever.
The solution lies in correcting the frame - not the screen.
    Let me know your results.

It is true that bad assembly can cause this but it may not be bleed.
the IPS panel itself has pixel angle that projects color and light and reflects light brighter at different angles from center. The bezel itself may be pinching or loose or a combo of both. it may not be at all and it just may be the panel manufacture process. The panel on an IPS is not super tight, you may see it billow a bit even when using a microfiber cloth to clean it. It may move with the cloth so to speak. My XG270 does this. That itself changes the light refraction from ambiance. It may not be bleed at all.
If you see scenes in games where there's color and lighting and these areas are not washed out compared to center or overbright, then it's not bleed. You can test the same using other solid colors in full screen. My panel has a whitish look top and bottom left corner about 3" towards center and the right top and bottom has a golden glow 3" towards center in an all black screen or dark scenes in games. In a pure gray scale screen or full screen of any color, it's uniformed from all sides and corners.
In an all black full screen, you can pull the bezel away from the panel in one small area and it looks better, then in another pinch the bezel and it looks better. You'd have to do this across a few inches in the spots it looks uneven and would be impossible to get it right without taking the monitor apart, sealing the bezel, thus possibly making it worse upon assembly, or putting a wedge of paper between the bezel and panel to release the glow/bleed and then use something to pinch the panel closer to the bezel in another area. This alone can cause the seal to loosen in one spot over time with heat or tighten in the other. I've had only 2 IPS monitors be perfect in dark scenes, and that's a 75hz LG 27" IPS same model for both. Not a single flaw but it's not a gaming monitor at all, it's a workstation. Best either to return and play the lottery of buying, return, buying return or just ignore it. There is never one true method to eliminate this no matter what manufacturer you buy from.

It never used to be a problem. Manufacturers are making everything thinner with the knowledge that it creates planned obscellecence.
An extra 5cm depth on a monitor and an extra 2.5-5mm on a laptop screen isn't going to be a huge deal, you would hardly notice it except for when you first buy the item and think "wow its so thin" after that it's never an issue.
The most reliable TVs and monitors I've had have been really thick and heavy compared to what sells today. No back-light bleed and for an LCD 1080p TV no problems for failures over 12 years of constant use.
You're lucky if you get a functioning item out of the box these days and even then it rarely lasts much longer than the warranty.

  • @DemonOn240hz
    @DemonOn240hz 2 месяца назад

I can assure you guys that to avoid any BB or glow issues, just go and buy LG monitors.
Every brand other than LG is prone to this issue.
I have researched about this and this seems to be the case for some reason.
LG seems to distribute the glow evenly,so that it doesn't look like glow at all.
Glow can be present due to the technology of IPS displays but to make the glow uniform is a quality control thing.
Finding the glow or BB is a staple for all IPS panels.
The only way to avoid is to buy LG products.
Another thing that can be done is to take it to some expert engineer who is experienced in screen repairs and stuff. He can just even out the loose parts of the bezels that causes the glow to leak into the screen from the backlight.

Backlight bleed on a laptop screen makes for a little minigame that you can play when you're bored. The problem is that once you fix it, and then you close and open the laptop again, you're probably going to bend the panel just enough to introduce the bleeding again.

mate, I'm actually pretty excited about trying your method! Bought myself AOC c32g1, VA monitor, I've transited to this 32" giant from my 27" TN panel and I can't really even begin to tell how I enjoy the size and colours, they give me great level of immersions in games. But it has got quite horrible back-light bleeding in 6 (!) places - 3 at the top and 3 at the bottom! I mean, I don't actually see it until I play a very dark game (most horrors) with my room light turned off, but it looks horrendous on those pitch-black colours. I still can return it to the shop and change for another one, however i'm afraid to get something worse, even dead pixels maybe. I've noticed that yours is IPS so my apprehensions are whether it's gonna work on VA as well, but i'll give it a try

    • @riverhook
      @riverhook  4 года назад +1

Hi man, glad to hear you got yourself a VA display :) I wanted to get one as well (one from Samsung CFG range) but it didn't have G-Sync, so I went for Asus PG279Q.
The colours should be much better on VA panel, and with a lot less backlight bleed as well! Not sure how severe are these? I know how irritating they can be - this is the main reason I started investigating what could be the cause. I knew it was mechanical, and therefore - fixable!
With my model it's pretty clear - even if I do change it, I can always end up in a loop of returned monitors. The quality control of these is pure crap. And yes - it's most likely you'll get the one somebody has returned.
But with VA, it shouldn't be that dramatic. I would try out my method (as it's 0 invasive, do not try anything else) for a few days - If you notice an improvement - go for it.
If not - Exchange it and you will most likely end up with a better one.
Mine is 100% completely backlight bleed free now. It can come back after a while, in terms of starting to reappear slightly (not even close as much as originally), as the frame has a tendency to go back to its original shape, but the solution is quite simple - just repeat the method again.
When I notice a lighter area (in pitch black games), I just pinch if once and it's gone again.
The frequency of these repeats will reduce... 10 days, 25 days, 2 month - until it's gone.
      Let me know your results!

    • @boriskosulin4945
      @boriskosulin4945 4 года назад

@@riverhook i've tried and unfortunately it hasn't improved the condition so far. Maybe it works somewhat different on VA panles or maybe I don't have simple bleeding but 'clouding' as well? I dunno. Also, my monitor is almost frameless (they are very thin, mayhap about 5 mm) so it feels as if I partly press on the frames and partly on the screen, but anyway, when I pinch it then only the nearest area to my finger becomes black, the rest still remains clouded. An addition, when I try to find a 'source' of light and pinch the frame at that place, it seems that the 'source' merely moves aside and remains nearby, it doesn't disappear. By the way, you don't need G-sync for Nvidia cards, it used to be like this at the very beginning, however Nvidia has long since added FreeSync support as well, you can even see in the setting of Nvidia in the newest update

@@riverhook Hello again! Just thought I'd leave a small update. I actually took a second monitor - the same model - to check, and those grey stain were on exactly same spots, moreover they even had the same shape, so I just returned it back and decided to stay with the 1st one. The size of it is very impressive and it was relatively cheap and there's no guarantee that other models wouldn't have the same issue, so I guess I'll just live with it. They are absolutely not visible until there are pitch-dark scenes in games. As for FreeSync, they used to have problems with Nvidia cards in the very beginning, but ever since Nvidia has started implementing it using software updates, it has actually improved greatly and works perfectly well with Nvidia cards. Of course it still may depend on a monitor - cheap monitors may have worse compatibility.

@@boriskosulin4945 Hi man, thanks for the update.
Feels bad! Sometimes the model is unfixable, which is a shame. If BB is always on the same spot, I bet this happened when it was assembled, the robots squeeze the frame too much, so it always end up like that.
I'd try to loosen the screws directly around it, to try to reduce the pressure and tightness. If these are tightly screwed, you can't really pinch it off. Do only a 1/6 of a turn, nothing dramatic that might endanger your warranty /monitor. Try pinching it a bit around the frame, just to see if there's any kind of change. If yes - do the screws. If not - nothing will help you.
Re Nvidia, yeah, it might work now, but I didn't want to take a risk, as I had GTX 1080 at the time I bought my monitor, it would be a shame to lose the sync :)

Returning the unit is a good option (if your store provides it) but you can never know what you gonna get. In my opinion, you'll get a unit that was returned by someone else etc. So it's a gamble.
Regarding the sound, my frame cracks sometimes, sometimes not. The frame is the problem and it's a bit badly manufactured, so it's cracking because it's not fitting together perfectly. This method is 20x less damaging than all other methods - but I am just a customer who tried and discovered it - be careful.

      @riverhook  5 лет назад +7

Many times - you should hear some crackling sound when the frame adjust its position. After it's like 95% gone, it can come back sometimes, then you just press it again... Now I have 99% of my bb removed, and every 10 days or so around 5% gets back right at the source, then I pinch it for 1 sec and it's gone again. I hear a click every time. @riverhook  5 лет назад +9

Hey man, you're welcome. Hope that my method will help.
Regarding the method, I doubt that this can hurt your panel in any way since all you are doing is pinching the plastic part, so you cannot over-pinch it etc. Of course, don't do anything stupid like squeezing it with all your strength. You'll see - nothing dramatic is necessary.
You just need to squeeze it until the bright part becomes as dark as it should be. When that point is reached, hold the squeeze for a few seconds and then release. Then repeat this process until it's completely gone. Repeat when/if it appears again after a while until it's gone.
Unscrewing, flexing, massaging or inserting anything around the panel will most likely damage it.
Don't do that - ignore those stupid comments.
I refuse to believe that we need to do something like that in order to get what we've paid for.

Good for you mate! The monitor is fantastic. Please let me know how did it go.
I've used the calibration settings found here - www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm. The value is maximum - 100.
The bleed comes from the backlight (the brightness source in a way), so it is expected to be reduced by lowering the brightness level - but I don't see a point darkening it to the max. Fuck that. BTW 100 brightness is not as bright as one might think.
One more note - As you "learned" from my vid, the BB does come back after a while, and you then need to just randomly pinch it again for 3 seconds and it stays good for a while. Well - at this moment, it doesn't come back for me at all.
This is how it looks now: prntscr.com/om6gqw

Hi - You're welcome. Yes, I know the feeling. The same applies to my monitor PG279Q, it's an amazing panel, yet a bit troubling with bb. I expected that before even buying one.
I am not 100% sure if anybody had success with laptops, I only tried this on my own unit, so I am not sure about any other monitor out there.
What I'm really curious to know (because I got similar questions), and please don't get me wrong, I totally do not mind any questions, but as it's probably faster to do it than to ask me this - Why do you even ask first? :D Aren't you curious to test it out? :D I remember when I saw my BB - I immediately started to dwell on how to get rid of it. You only need like 10 sec to try it out. It should get better when you press the frame. If it's 100% the same when you pinch it - It might be impossible.
It's just that this is 100% non-invasive, it's like cleaning your monitor. What is the worst thing that can happen? BB staying the same?
Whatever you do - Do not try anything invasive. People share really dumb methods (because they probably don't care if they screw their monitors that much) that can worsen things up for you.

I tried your method on brand new hp 24f monitor and completely screwed up! was about to return it but thought maybe this will fix and with just a little press it instantly cracked that area.. Maybe because this monitor comes with no bazel at all or maybe some led behind that pressing area caused it.. and since this damage isn't covered in warranty and local HP guy told repair isn't possible, i screwed up bad...

Hi man - how do you mean "cracked"? Like the screen cracked? :O Gimme a photo please!
If yes - WOOOOW that sounds like a disaster unit! That shouldn't happen at all. How are you supposed to clean it?
If something else happened - Why would you say to them what you did? You could've pretended you got it like that.
Anyway - if there is no bezel at all, so it's just the screen there, that means that there is no frame I was talking about. I wouldn't touch the screen part if I were you - only the plastic part.
This method is least invasive, do not try any other retarded methods out there, you might screw it up completely.

@@riverhook This was my first of its kind monitor actually, i was suspicious about durability already and specially touching top area but for "cool looks" brought it anyway, lol. and out of curiosity, i got retarded for a sec and pressed it.. only gentle press and *cracks*. I was surprised myself how fragile this thing was and any little bump in future could've done it.. Anyhow, it was a good experience about purchasing right monitor. :D

Not sure. Try my method, if there's too much of it, it might be faulty.

can someone share if after doing this the bleeding returned or will it go forever?I want a new monitor but now I'm super scared of buying something that will have this issue 😢

I have removed it completely and has 0 now. I've got some other comments too. However, no one can predict how much or how will the backlight bleed "behave" on your particular unit. If you have a nice return policy in your shop, you should definitely return a very bad unit, get a decent one and then apply the technique,

@@riverhook thanks for the amazing vide, it helped to differentiate between backlight bleeding, and normal backlight which is part of the technology, I will try this if the case comes, I was almost buying a TUF Asus monitor 27 inches 1440P but then I realized I need something that makes the 4080 more useful in terms of visuals, thanks and many thanks

I mean damn is it really that difficult for these manufacturers to just apply a little more glue in the factory to really seal everything together? Or heck just run a seal around the inside of the panel to prevent backlight bleed. There's so many simple solutions that could be done. These manufacturers are getting lazy.

Somebody out there assembles 50 of these each day, and they simply do not have the time/mind power to really focus.

Just find a soft cloth and massage the panel as gently as possible and you'll be just fine

take a cloth, pressure the screen gently and press the frame from the behind, see it will help
