Culture Club came in with a big splash to the USA in the early 80s (about 1983). I remember their big hit 'Karma Chameleon' stayed at #1 on the charts for several weeks. The singer Boy George's look was so androgenous that he became an instant star and object of much discussion. One thing for sure, his voice is amazing! So glad you found Culture Club!

I used to flip everytime my mum played a tape from Culture Club.
They had such a massive impact on my early humble beginnings of my life.
    Their music just glows-still.
Good you getting into it and glad you like it so much!!!!
Also the first half of the 80s were truly experimental. The looks, the sound, the people, neon lights glowing everywhere and ultra rough.
    Yes 10/10!!!

Also because there was no internet 80s and early 90s people basically did create their own DIY Style. Also with tv and magazines available people did copy some styles but added their own flavour to it, as I said before those days were raw and slightly rough.

Boy George was huge for at least two years before the inevitable backlash set in (too much success too fast). He went thru a terrible period of drugs and decline, but he's back now and has reunited with his CC bandmates. Good for him! He doesn't dress up anymore, but I thought he made a very pretty queen.

Boy George is still going strong today (and he just turned 60 in June.) The woman who sang with Culture Club was Helen Terry. Her voice was strong and amazing. She sang with them on several of their big hits. If you would like to experience more of Helen Terry I recommend the songs by Culture Club "Church of The Poison Mind" and also the song "Victims". This album was HUGE. Boy George's voice. like George Michael and Daryl Hall is blue-eyed soul. Boy George's androgynous look propelled Culture Club to superstardom. They had great songs on this album, like everyone mentioned, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?, I'll Tumble For Ya, Time, and Church Of The Poison Mind, and Karma Chameleon are all bangers. Unfortunately, their second album did not measure up to Color By Numbers, and Boy George had serious drug issues, that even got him banned from entering the U.S., and that was the undoing of Culture Club.

Great reaction Empress! I have not heard all of the "Culture Club" discography as I have only owned their greatest hits album. But I have picked up on what you seem to be drawn to enough to encourage you to explore their albums or at least hit songs more in depth. Their videos are also iconic as "Boy George" (Lead singer) had a unique sense of style and androgyny. At least for the time. Some recommendations are "Karma Chameleon", "Church of the Poison Mind", "Do you Really Want to Hurt Me" and I highly recommend Boy George's solo song "The Crying Game". Thanks for reminding me of a great band and some music from the soundtrack of my life. Take care.

OMG, I love Culture Club. Boy George was also a controversial man because of his androgynous appearance. He is a really underrated vocalist, however I think his use of drugs has had a negative effect on his vocals of today. You should do some of their songs they are good. "CHURCH OF THE POISON MIND" I might get some negative feedback for this, but if you want to listen to some good harmonies, check out Wilson Philips "Hold On". They are the daughters of The Beach Boys and the Mamas and Pappas. Another good artist you should check out is George Michael..love his vocals and so underrated. He later found spiritual strength in Buddhism in the late 2000s. He had a solo album, The Martyr Mantras (1990), that IMO has some of the best deep club dance songs I've ever heard. How amazing that you begin a Culture Club journey with this song, wow. Not one of the singles, but a great example of the brilliant moment Boy George was in his writing.
Lately ive been listening a lot to That's The Way - Im Only Trying to Help You, from this album. It's another one of the great ones but not singles. Highly recomended.
Miss Me Blind, and Church of The Poisoned Mind, are my favorite of the Colour by Numbers huge singles. Karma Chamaleon was the biggest and most famous, but not my personal fave.
My favorite Culture Club single is Time - Clock of The Heart. I think you would really like it. It's a single that was released at the time their first album, Kissing to be Clever was becoming a big hit.
Also from Kissing, gotta check out the monster hit Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. It's fabulous.
This is i think THE Culture Club album. Colour, i mean. Kissing has very good moments, but this one is glorius.
It all slowly goes downhill after this one, im sorry to say.
Im a 52 year old queer indie musician from Puerto Rico, and my dreams of working in music begin with this band.
You have to check out some video stuff, cause his androginus looks where very scandalous at the time, and very very iconic.
You just made my sucky quarantine night soooo much better. Thanks Empress.

Good jam! Boy George in culture club had many many hits! Good voice! He wasn’t hot! And a babe Like George Michael But a good singer no doubt! When George Michael went solo and did the faith album in 87. I don’t even think Elvis could have touched him in hotness. Lol. He had that look with the leather, beard, hair. Whole package! Even my brother which is straight said damn he’s good looking!

@@EmpressReacts lol. Which George you talking about? They both have/had incredible voices!! But George Michael was the 🔥one. Yes! After George left wham and changed his look OMG! Hot hot! He had that perfect face! And those 👀. ❤️ he will always be my fav male singer. I wished him and Michael woulda done something together! Ohhh and Prince was great too!!! For me in the 80’s the Great males were Those 3. Michael J. George M. And Prince. In women it’s Madonna. Whitney and Janet. Those 6 people rocked the 80’s. Ahhh empress if I can only go back!!!!😏

I respectfully disagree. Maybe with the makeup on George ODowd wasnt as handsome as George Michael so the comparison wouldnt be fair. But after his drug episode and cleaning up, Boy George adapted a more masculine look and was amazingly handsome, like Jon Moss. Even his mid 90s interview shows it. Sorry but Boy George also has beautiful eyes and smile. He has those rare silver eyes. Even the makeup couldn't block it. Watch his 1989 "Dont take my mind on a Trip"interview. Or even his performance of "Like it or Not". Both Georges are great songwriters also. George Michael even covered Victims so that says something about BG. Boy George was just as much a ladies magnet as George Michael was, as girls were a majority of his fans and he was sent many love letters (though a bit unnecessary lol). My list of hot 80s boy celebs in no particular order: Jon Moss, Michael Jackson, Boy George, George Michael, Andrew Ridgley, Rick Astley, Prince and of course Morten H. From Aha (arguably #1 lol)
