One of my FAVORITE songs by Culture club.
I know this is late but I think the lyrics offer a clue to the meaning of “Black Money”: “fortunes find you cross out every emotion, standing right behind a shadow of devotion, somebody's else's life cannot be mine...when you love someone but they don't love you in return but when you love someone you got money to burn..."
So, “Black Money" is the time, the effort & the emotion spent on someone who doesn't feel the way you do.
I always took this song as equating 'Black Money" with 'emotional currency', in this case, dark emotions. Not sure it's accurate, but that's how I've always interpreted it.
Late to this one but so happy you reacted to it. And you let go about understanding the lyrics and enjoyed the vocal powerhouse that is Helen Terry on back-up. ✌🏽

This song is a popular fan favorite 'album song' that was never released as a single. The album produced US charted hits :

Church Of The Poisoned Mind,

Miss Me Blind
Victims was not released in the US but became a hit in UK, Australia and Ireland.
Another fan favorite of the album would be "That's The Way (I'm Only Trying To Help You), which is very soulful with a more crooning Boy George.
Growing up in Trinidad, the song Mister Man was also a hit that played on the radio a lot and at parties because of its reggae beat. I was a huge fan and still have all these 45's picture sleeved, the vinyl album and the vinyl album picture disc.
I think he was equating black money with emotions.
You think too much about the lyrics....it was the 70's and 80's....🤣
