    I kinda wish reactions were just audio, which is how most of us first heard and "reacted" to the songs back in the day. The video can distract from the genius of the music on its own. But then it was fun to watch the video, after, if you were lucky enough to have cable, that is! 😅
    Love Boy George!

    When you said "UK band, right? That's the only explantion....." I spit out my coffee. I remember buying this album and I was just an instant fan. Boy George's androgynous look was shocking to some, but I found him intriguing. And right about the same time we had Eurythmics with Annie Lennox wearing a suit and sporting a buzz cut....androgyny was in I guess. Great times. Glad you liked the song. They definitely have a reggae vibe to many of their songs. They put out an album as recently as a few years ago, and did a US tour. All members were still there the first time I saw them, but only 3 out of 4 the last time. Either way, they still sound amazing. Take care.

    You're right brutha when you said it was more to this joint. Unbeknowst to some Boy George and the drummer Jon Moss were involved with each other. Even back then ppl had their suspicions they were more than just band mates. The song is basically about Jon hurting him by denying they were in a relationship. The joint "I Tumble 4 You" which is also on the same album is also about Jon.

    No you're not trippin~Boy George took a big hit when Culture Club gained notoriety, being considered very controversial because back in that space he could not be distinguished from male versus female, due to his dress attire, hair, & makeup! Funny, not laughable, but strange, how from then to now, he'd fit right in with no one taking a second glance. Which btw; he has the most beautiful light eyes imaginable. His voice is also very unique & soulful. Gotta luv that Era~lots of greats! 👍 ❤

    "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" was the breakthrough song for Culture Club in the U.S. back in 1982, rising to the top ten in the charts. I heard the song on the radio long before I ever saw the video, and the music spoke for itself quite well back then also. Boy George was somewhat controversial figure because of his high pitched voice, his look, and his effeminate mannerism. I don't know all the historical details, but it wasn't all that long ago that a person could go to prison in the UK for being gay. So the story in the video isn't about him directly so much as it is about homophobia in the UK during the fifty years prior. I suspect the minstrels are there as witnesses to that as much as they are there to visually embody racism. That said, while the song holds up great, the video, eh, not so much, especially since it distracts from the song.

    This song was written as a reaction to the annoying press that Boy George got due to his androgynous dress style which when I first saw when I was in my teens I loved it as it pushed my boundaries of what was socially acceptable. He actually looked really fabulous dressed that way in the band .

  • @tdamtoft
    @tdamtoft Год назад +2

    "Is that a guy or not"? You took it completely on topic, since this video shook the UK, and MPs (congressmen or senators for you) demanded it be banned back in 1982. I was 11, knew nothing about gay people and absolutely loved it, still do - even more after I learned about "them", who are really just also us.
