We accepted Boy George in the 80's because he was talented, we didn't care how he dressed.
Exact
This song was on every hip-hop/R&B station. Big hit! We called that little step he is doing “the boy George”
OMylanta 🤣🤣🤣 I hollered at your facial expressions at the beginning of the video. Yes, that's Boy George. He's a legend frfr 👏🏾 ❤️
Side note: This is the UK version of the video. The U.S. version edited out the minstrel singers.
Culture Club were one of the biggest bands of the early '80s and singer Boy George was one of the major Pop culture icons of that decade. This album - _Kissing To Be Clever_ - was *huge.*
More, you'd like: "Time (Clock Of The Heart)"

One of the biggest songs of any era by one of the biggest 80s groups. I’ll always LOVE Culture Club and the GREAT Boy George!❤❤❤💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🌹🌹🌹🎼🎵🎶
If people have this puzzled initial reaction to his appearance today, then I can only imagine how this played in 1982, lol
I kinda wish reactions were just audio, which is how most of us first heard and "reacted" to the songs back in the day. The video can distract from the genius of the music on its own. But then it was fun to watch the video, after, if you were lucky enough to have cable, that is! 😅
Love Boy George!
This song was huge in when it came out. A fusion of reggae and R and B and of course Boy George.🎶🎸🌴
This song is ALSO prominently featured in movie ‘The Wedding Singer….’ GREAT movie.
I don't care what anyone says or thinks Culture Club was my group back in the day. What Boy George did was his business. The way he dressed or lived his life was his business. I love Boy George's VIBE PERIOD 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿. And I loved how he danced 😂🤣
I concurred

Yes that's Boy George a guy. Was a great artist and the '80s and Beyond. Definitely walks to the beat of his own drummer❤️ love him. I have always heard from anything I've read that he's a really great guy. I imagine he experienced a lot of adversity
I love Culture Club..I was in Jr High when this came out.. pay attention to the jurors in black face
His name is Boy George. He's a guy. Culture Clubs first 3 albums were fantastic.
Meh, their first three singles were.
Agreed these are absolute classics
First 3…🤔 all there albums are great, especially the last album Life.. but I could be biased
When you said "UK band, right? That's the only explantion....." I spit out my coffee. I remember buying this album and I was just an instant fan. Boy George's androgynous look was shocking to some, but I found him intriguing. And right about the same time we had Eurythmics with Annie Lennox wearing a suit and sporting a buzz cut....androgyny was in I guess. Great times. Glad you liked the song. They definitely have a reggae vibe to many of their songs. They put out an album as recently as a few years ago, and did a US tour. All members were still there the first time I saw them, but only 3 out of 4 the last time. Either way, they still sound amazing. Take care.
Classic song 🎵 great memories of watching this on Friday night videos before we had mtv.
Yes it's a good one and Boy George had an awesome voice. Time (Clock of the Heart) is also such a very beautiful song with some of the loveliest vocals ever.
Their best song!
"Time" and " I just wanna be be loved " are great songs.
Love Culture Club! Iconic! This is a great song, very popular. My favorite of theirs is Time (Clock of the Heart) Boy George is a man. Gay icon. ❤
I actually love this song at 22
Likewise but I was in elementary school.

😆🤣😂
My mom used to say “that Boy George can really sing!” Lol
George really is part of our culture (club). Believe I went to the same school as him. Don't know how he survived. So love this song and wish he was singing to us still.
LMAO looks like you've had your first visual encounter with the King of Gender Bending Androgyny, Boy George. Welcome to the early '80s! 😂 If you haven't seen his other music videos, you should. Good stuff.
You're right brutha when you said it was more to this joint. Unbeknowst to some Boy George and the drummer Jon Moss were involved with each other. Even back then ppl had their suspicions they were more than just band mates. The song is basically about Jon hurting him by denying they were in a relationship. The joint "I Tumble 4 You" which is also on the same album is also about Jon.
Beautiful opening 30 seconds then rest of lovely song. He was one of the biggest stars in the world for about 2 years ! The vid is typical of the times 🤔
No you're not trippin~Boy George took a big hit when Culture Club gained notoriety, being considered very controversial because back in that space he could not be distinguished from male versus female, due to his dress attire, hair, & makeup! Funny, not laughable, but strange, how from then to now, he'd fit right in with no one taking a second glance. Which btw; he has the most beautiful light eyes imaginable. His voice is also very unique & soulful. Gotta luv that Era~lots of greats! 👍 ❤
Boy George did a song with PM Dawn .. it’s fire “ More Than Likely “
One of my favorites!
1983,1984 Culture Club was the biggest pop group in the world before Boy George drug addiction, Amy Winehouse took Boy George formula of song writing, using his relationship with the group's drummer who he was in love with to base their songs, for instance this song was about Boy George and John relationship.
Yes , the lead singer is a man his name is Boy George. he became very popular back in the 80's . he is part of LBQT movement
Culture Club was a huge band in the 80s. This song caused a huge reaction - kind of like yours... "Is it a guy??" The band was a commercial success, but fell apart unfortunately to drugs and excesses... some amazing songs created!
He actually has a few really good songs on that
This was an enormous worldwide smash hit in the first of many for this band and you had the same reaction everybody had back in the early 80s wait a minute is that a guy or a girl but boy George was a trailblazer in the 80s was all about androgynous luxe with Boy George and Annie Lennox probably leading the way with so many different looks between them
Is is a man. George O'Dowd. Professional know as Boy George. Awesome group. One of there best songs is Church of the Poisoned Mind.
A big hit! Weird video for sure! Loved the reaction.❤👍
Boy George was very special ..in many ways ...but Damn he could sing ! Peace & Love
About 20 yrs ago I saw BOY George deejaying at a club in Detroit. He was spinning an EDM genre called "Garage 2 Step". Many Gen X women showed up dressed in 80s clothes thinking he's going to perform Culture Club songs, they must have been disappointed at the EDM with no lyrics 😂
joe- that is hilarious. I remember his DJ-ing period! That is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh.
Yep, that's a dude (Boy George), him and his band, Culture Club, had mega hits in the mid to late eighties.
Love Culture Club! Black Money and Victims are underrated!
2:28: "I THINK that's a guy." That's exactly what everyone said back in 1982. Good song.
Yes. Let me introduce to you Boy George, lead singer of Culture Club.
Hi JJ! Nice Reaction! Like I've said before, Boy George was the "Truth"! Great Request "Double M". Peace!
MM classic 🥰🥰🥰🥰
We grew up listening to Boy George (that's the guy's name"
Yes brother that's a man his name is Boy George even makes me did this song with the lyrics
A lot of people point out the black face.. but the guys in black face are actually black, they we’re trying to make a statement, hence the name Culture Club, Mikey was Jamaican Roy who is Anglo-Saxon George who is Irish and Jon who is Jewish, the band was about mixing cultures and music..
The concept of the video is him getting kicked out of various places and locked in jail because of the way he chose to dress and live his life
the song was about the drummer in the band and they had broken up.
You should check out another UK singer from the 80s called Adam ant song goodie two shoes
I'm not a fan of 1980s music. But there are songs like this one that are really good. The vocals are great.
A whole decade, that's........interesting.
He's a guy back then they Called it androgenist And his name is Boy George
it's about gay supression.
Lol u r killing me
I believe it was between him and George Michael;
I forget which one but the father did not condone the androgynous look or the LGBTQ+ community to the degree, he kicked his son out of his house.
As a child I loved this song. The video shows him being discriminated against in each era of time and they're from the UK 🇬🇧.

Yeah he's a guy with a great voice and had many great songs via Culture club! The UK public in general, don't care about race, so the black and white minstrels you are so confused about is just a part of our enjoyment of entertainment, no race involved!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
React to Starless by King Crimson next
First time I ever saw the entire music video. What was the whole blackface thing about? Bizarre
Boy George is an icon
"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" was the breakthrough song for Culture Club in the U.S. back in 1982, rising to the top ten in the charts. I heard the song on the radio long before I ever saw the video, and the music spoke for itself quite well back then also. Boy George was somewhat controversial figure because of his high pitched voice, his look, and his effeminate mannerism. I don't know all the historical details, but it wasn't all that long ago that a person could go to prison in the UK for being gay. So the story in the video isn't about him directly so much as it is about homophobia in the UK during the fifty years prior. I suspect the minstrels are there as witnesses to that as much as they are there to visually embody racism. That said, while the song holds up great, the video, eh, not so much, especially since it distracts from the song.
Yes it's a guy called Boy George
Boy George is an underrated singer.
So true
I think that was his point ..............LOL That's great . HE is a GUY .................
This song was written as a reaction to the annoying press that Boy George got due to his androgynous dress style which when I first saw when I was in my teens I loved it as it pushed my boundaries of what was socially acceptable. He actually looked really fabulous dressed that way in the band .
"Is that a guy or not"? You took it completely on topic, since this video shook the UK, and MPs (congressmen or senators for you) demanded it be banned back in 1982. I was 11, knew nothing about gay people and absolutely loved it, still do - even more after I learned about "them", who are really just also us.
A truly great, innovative singer and entertainer. And a complete hot mess for a while due to heroin. So glad he got clean. A real survivor cause that shit will take you to places Jesus himself wouldn’t go. That quote came from Law and Order SVU, not me😂
Plot Twist: “Boy” George has been a girl this whole time. 😱
Just Jammin, why don't you react to IAN WHITCOMB'S YOU REALLY TURN ME ON 1965?
Do (time) by him

@@JustJammin thank u
Yes it’s a guy…😂
It’s Boy George.
They were the biggest band in the world at one time, and still touring and making albums to this day… the last album being Life…
You have a bad memory I think you already reviewed culture clubs time clock of my heart. And yes he is a guy one of the first to be called a gender bender and openly gay in a time when it was still frowned upon. They have lots of good songs try church of the poison mind. And well we are at it old mate when are you going to review the god that is gary numan again! Ha ha
Of course jammin couldn't remember if you reviewed nearly 10,000 songs would you remember every song so is not just having a bad memory I don't know how many videos he record a day but he pushes out 10 videos a day give him a break.
I never said that I didn't know who they were?
Yep, that's a GUY.
