- FPV drones are becoming more popular every day and normal camera drones have matured to powerful platforms but which one should you choose?
Since DJI released the FPV drone lots of people have been looking at buying it but FPV drones aren't the best for everyone. Normal drones still have a place to take photos and film from an aerial perspective but FPV drones are here to stay. I show you the differences of FPV drones vs normal drones to help you decide if you want to start flying FPV or if you should get a DJI Mavic or Mini 2 for your first drone. So if you have been wondering which drone to get an FPV or DJI drone then let me help you decide.

I watched the entire video. You share some really valuable information in this video for someone looking to take the leap forward with FPV. Well done!
Thanks Eddie, that was my goal. this comment it going to be pinned
You probably dont care but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Joaquin Luka Instablaster ;)
As a videographer I keep both. They each allow prospective shots that other cant.
agreed!
can the dji fpv drone do flips? looking to see how advanced the drone is
yes it can
Nice footage Jake.. I use mini 2 early dusk or dawn or flat out night time and I use DJI FPV on bright sunny days as I simply cannot see my phone screen when the sun is out.. FPV goggles really keeping me in the game 😅
great idea!
I decided to buy both the Air 2s and the DJI FPV drone and am loving them both. The FPV side takes lots of practice and sim time for sure but is totally worth it. After these two drones the next purchase is a Cinelog 35, then later I will build, but you can't beat the DJI FPV system IMHO. Great video ! Cheers from Moab Utah... ;-)
Nice!
Same.
4:28 Hey! I've gone hiking there! I went there on a trip one time and it was amazing just beautiful. Love your video's, keep it up!
It's a great spot! Thanks!!
This channel deserves a lot more subscribers and views, amazing content and the shots are incredible
thank you very much!
Really incredible shots, Jake! Your opening shot was on the Daily Dose of Internet RUclips channel.
Thanks! That opening shot has gone viral on TikTok and a few other spots so I’ve had a lot of people like daily dose ask to share it
Just want to say, as someone looking at the various options and wanting to get a drone, your videos are great, and really impart a lot of knowledge efficiently. It seems that some "intro" videos already assume a high level of knowing, but thanks for laying it out for peeps like me.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks Jake! Great summary of FPV vs Normal Drones. I like the Mini 2 for slow aerial shots especially the straight down view. However, the DJI FPV is so fun to fly, with very cool perspective when flying close to the ground (no sudden loss of signal). Do you bring both to your favorite glacier sites and ice caves (I'm very jealous)?
agreed and yes I usually do lol
I have no clue which drone to get ... I just wanna have fun and film a little video ... But I've fallen in love with the DJI RC Pro .. which I could have both on the FPV although I know both would not be needed.
yeah unfortunately thats not possible yet...
@@JakeSloan I’m not a videographer I make small IG videos and RUclips videos for Poetry I’m more into RC cars and speed I’m thinking I’m gonna go with the FPV.
i want to fly 2miles radius max, to check on sheep on the farm and count them afterwards, my budget is very strict, what can you suggest?
I’d highly suggest the DJI mini 2 without a doubt.
@@JakeSloan thanks! i just ordered the mini2 flymore combo :)
I've been waiting for this information for a long time. Thanks so much!!
You're welcome
Epic footage Jake!! And thank you for breaking down, in detail, the differences between the kind of drones and their strengths and uses! I'm still a Mavic 2 Pro guy, but it is exciting to see the new FPV frontier!
Thanks Mark!!
Awesome footage Jake. The comparisons was great, but you really need both. The stabilized drones with GPS are a necessity if you’re primarily out to take pictures and video. I show people how the “throttle” is really an altitude change control. “Pitch” is really a go forward control. Super easy. FPV is a BLAST though. Self leveling is for wimps! That said I can’t fly acro without the FPV feed. You are a beast! The tunnel footage kills my! Great job!
Thanks and you are spot on!
That epic intro!
Felt more like a movie than a youtube channel
Thanks!
FPV always seemed like a video game with expensive consequences. I can already tell that when the time comes for me to buy a drone, I'm going to have to go thru your archive to find one that'll fit my needs.
Fpv is a rabbit hole you fall down and try and slow your fall by throwing money into the air 😂😂😂 BUT it’s really fun on the way down... when it comes time to buy a drone you can always hit me up for a recommendation!
It's actually the other way around with fpv. Sure it has high start up cost but it balances out on crash repairs, instead of ruining the whole thing you might need to only replace a motor etc.
Whoa that tunnel shot was you?? I’ve seen that floating around Instagram and Reddit this week! Wild
Yep that was me!
@@JakeSloan unreal! Also this video is great! I’ve been flying fpv for a bit so I knew most of what you’re talking about already but I love the footage you capture so that was easily enough of a reason to stay!
I watched you on the Ken Heron disaster of a podcast Jake• first of all your footage and channel are. I thing short of amazing. Keep it up! Second of all, you were a great sport while Ken worked out his issues. 🤭
I just found your channel and I’m loving it! This was a really good video and honestly fpv doesn’t seem as scary anymore. Stay warm
Awesome! Thank you!
I get really tired of the ice cave drone shots. *** NOT!!!!! *** Always great stuff Jake!
ROFL yeah I am going to film everything from my desk from now on...
@@JakeSloan well said Jake 👍👍👍
Thanks very much Jake. This answered my newbie question on which drone to get.
So glad to hear it
Excellent video - thank you for sharing. INCREDIBLE footage of the ice cave!
Glad you enjoyed it
Really good stuff Jake. The footage is epic! Always teaching! Thank you
Thank you!!
Thanks for the video! That FPV drone produce some intense and awesome action POV footage! Looks like stuff that wouldn’t have been possible a few years ago unless you were a major Hollywood production. My guess however is that for wide open spaces like in Alaska, FPV drones are great... but in densely populated or forest, tree filled, or even metropolitan areas, flying them may be quite challenging.
very much so, there are other kinds of FPV drones that are a little bit easier to flying in close quarters but it still takes a lot of skill
That's the fun of them and where you can get the best action shots.
Im wondering in buying a fpv, to use at work, but i need a view 90°. He does that?
no FPV will not do that you want a normal drone
Great video, thank you. Question, If I were.to get the DJI FPV drone, can you.please.list what other DJI drones the FPV goggles will work with. Thank you
the DJI FPV goggles will work with this FPV drone and other fpv drones that use the DJI air units or caddix vista units but that is all, none of the DJI standard drones will work with the FPV goggles
@@JakeSloan SO when a DJI drone says "Air" in the name dosent mean it is compatible.
What drone would you recommend if all i need to do is follow horse racing? Horses typically get up to 55mph for 1/4 mile in a straight way track. I have a mavic Air 2 and it works ok, it’s too slow tho and I’m a unable to keep up. Even if the wind is up just a little against me, forget it…… I was thinking about the dji FPV for its speed and and readjusting the horizon in final cut. Any thoughts which drone would work best for me application?
In your application there really isn't much honestly that can keep up with that. A mavic 3 can hit 47mph (not counting any head wind) The FPV drone doesn't have great footage and the stabilization is just ok at best but it is the only thing that would keep up with the horses. have you considered something larger like the inspire?
@@JakeSloan can the fpv fly sideways as the same speed as going forward?
What a great video. I really want to get in to the DJI FPV, but that battery life really is concerning. Sounds like you'd need 3-4 batteries just to get some solid flight time in once your skills are up to par.
Yeah and that’s actually pretty good flight time for fpv drones
Enjoyable flight my friend... 👍👍👍 some great advice loved and liked
Thanks!
Love my DJI FPV had a mavic air 2 prior to my FPV
The mavic air 2 was very good easy to fly
But once I put the googles on and flew the FPV for the first time
It was amazing totally hooked
My mavic is up for sale
Lol flying FPV is a whole new level of fun!
Willing to sell the Mavic 2 to someone looking to get into flying drones?
I'm sure only a few has my interest; I really like the build of the carbon type X quads, although they are always tied to FPV which really doesn't interest me.
Could I get a stable GPS carbon type X quad (using INAV) and NOT fly FPV?
I would rather glance at a screen view from the onboard camera and II also like quads, that's not so proprietary on battery, blades etc.
Thanks.
Yes with inav you can do that
I'm just not seeing why I can't just put my regular drone on sport mode and get the same thing. Yea the FPV is faster but I still feel like a regular drone can get very similar shots
You can try
I have an Air 2, & am seriously close to purchasing the FPV.
I just can’t make up my mind as it’s a lot of money for a hobby, & I’m not sure how much I’ll use it, but I really do enjoy watching FPV footage and really want to get involved!
There are cheaper ways to get involved! I have a video coming about that soon
Am i missing something? When people are talking about which drone to get, they always mention "with these drones, you don't have to register with the faa, but with these ones you do". it costs 5 bucks for three years, and its done online in like 2 minutes. Is there more to it than that? Cause that sounds like it's almost not even worth considering
it really isnt that big of a deal in the US but in other countries it can make a very big difference on what you are able to do
@@JakeSloan ahh i see. That makes sense
4:35 sorry if it's out of context but can anyone tell me the name of this location please 🙏🙏🙏🙏🤗🤗🤗🤗 ps amazing video by the way❤️❤️
That’s Hatcher pass Alaska
@@JakeSloan ohhhh, wonderfull!! Alaska and Canada are the best territories for adventure! Thankyou so much have a wonderful day 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
Excellent explanation.. just got a mini 2. And I really like your videos.. I'm a amateur photographer/ Videographer.. have experience with dslr etc. But.. when it comes to drones ( accessories) not so much. Would you be so kind as to recommend a brand of Nd/Pl filters.. for the mini 2.. its obvious you know your stuff.. much appreciated in advance..
I highly recommend freewell
Can normal camera drones get that drone dive look or is that ONLY fpv.
true
Camera drones can dive but its not as cool as it's fairly slow
what camera do you use in studio
I use the A7sIII and a 24mm GM lens
Hello Jake!! This video was intriguing and caught my attention when I seen the thumbnail notification. Right off the bat when I first see a FPV drone, I was uninterested. It's not for me. I prefer the more stable and cinematic drones, like the Mavic 2 Pro to be exact. Different strokes for different folks. It all depends on what one would want to do and/or record. Nevertheless, it's another way to get out there and fly. Good video!
Exactly right! I have had enough people ask about it that I definitely wanted to make a video to hopefully help people understand what they might want most. Cheers!!
I already have the Mavic 2 pro ...but I was shopping for the new Drone as a back up drone .Good news , the Air 2 S is coming up ....but its 3 minutes less flying time that the Mavic Air2 ( bummer) :(((, which one should I go for Jake ?? Help!!!!
be patient, I will have a review of it as soon as possible
@@JakeSloan thank you Jake.you are the best !!👌👌
Thanks Jake great video but will stay with my DJI drone Mavic 2
Excellent choice
I love your vids with the broll and the information
Thanks!
Which is your favorite though, the one that you feel like it's your best buddy?
God bless.
I love flying FPV for fun
Excellent video Jake. I wanna buy my first drone, I'm not a picture and video person but I wanna be able to take some whenever I go on adventure with my wife and kids, but I also feel like the normal Drone will get me bored after a few flight. I want to feel that kind of excitement the fpv gives but without being irresponsible. Should I go for the mini, the 2s or the fpv?
I would go for the Air2s personally. I think you'll find a lot more use for it
if u got family I don't think you'll have time to learn fpv.
it takes A LOT to learn it.
of course that depends on how u wanna fly it.
u may buy an fvp and still fly it like normal drone cause u don't have enough time to learn.
OK the footage you can get FPV is just not obtainable with the “standard” drones. Interestingly, I’ve seen myself judging FPV footage by how focused I can be on a subject, vs continuing to realize it’s FPV drone footage. Like someone following a motorcycle. If I find myself concentrating on the bike, and not critiquing how good a job the pilot is doing, then I know he’s doing a good job. I’m sure you know what I mean. That tunnel is too cool though!
Exactly right!!
What make is the top you are wearing it’s great
North face
@@JakeSloan like it mate
Great video..... One comment ;The next DJI drone ( Air 2 S) will have both features . regular drone and FPV feature. A big plus . I cannot wait for that drone to come up on the market soon enough.:))))
Thanks! I'm excited to see what features the Mavic Air 2 has too!
I was told this from is not good for the things other regular drones can do. I want this drone but want to be able to make money from it is that possible ??
I would start with a regular drone FPV is really not in high demand yet
Jake Sloan the king of Alaska epic drone videos
Thank you sir!
Hi Jake, thanks for the comparison. I own a Mavic Air 2 but am strongly consideruíng buying also a DJI FPV just to get more dynamic footage. Greetings from Austria and a nice Eastermonday, Andy
Greetings!
Great video as always! Love the intro
Thank you!
Really insightful video! Thank you, Jake!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice review, by the way can you share the location where you made all those beautiful clips. Thanks
This is mostly filmed I. Portage glacier Alaska
Awesome review, thank you for the experience, appreciate you doing this. 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thanks
I am seriously torn right now. I make short films and want a drone to be able to use for fast dynamic moving shots in those but also just want one that I can use to just get nice atmospheric shots like the ones coming out of the DJI. I just can't decide between a Mavic Air 2 and building an FPV drone UGH!
wait just a few days DJI is releasing a new drone soon
My ~10 year old Naza M v2 can do complete RTH. That's not old hat now?
for FPV RTH is relatively rare
@@JakeSloan Do you know why? Admittedly, I'm ignorant despite building my f550 a few times. My next FPV is/was my recently acquired DJI FPV and I'm loving it.
Did you shoot in 24fps and uploaded 25fps? Or is it my setup?
Most of this was shot in 30fps but there are some clips that were shot in 24fps and they were sped up to match
@@JakeSloan Okay. So that is probably the reason for the framedrops. I bought the DJI FPV anyways. My clients want more dynamic droneshots. Thanks for the video! That helped! Greetings from germany!
Which landing pad is that?
its a cheap one from amazon
Your area is breathtaking 🤩🤩
I agree!!
Can you use the DJI goggles with the mini 2?
unfortunately no
Awesome video and greatest skill flying, absolutely love it 🥰
Thanks!
The only reason i wanna get fpv drone is because nice way to get dynamic movement videos but Australia laws on Fpv drones are crazy
That’s too bad
Great video 👍, liked & subscribed, thanks for sharing ‼️
Thanks!
Great video homey
Thank you
Great vid! looking to get into the art. feeling the DJI FPV will be the better option.
Yeah if you are just jumping in then it will be a good option
Exactly what I think, occusinc 3.0, goggles etc
Excellent
I really want these drones, but I’m no where near these fantastic sceneries. I would just have my neighborhood to fly around in which I don’t think is legal.
You can check and see where you can fly in your area by using an app like air map or B4UFLY to see restricted zones in your area!
FPV is better in my opinion because you have more “oh shit, that was a close one” moments which make it exciting.
LOL truth!
That was a risk I would have took to fly that ice tunnel as well, it was brilliant...
Thank you!
I like the Air 2 S , but its 3 minutes less flying time than the
Mavic Air 2 ..Thats a bummer....:((((( Even if you go as far as 12 KM
with the Air 2 S , I am afraid you may not have enough battery juice
to come back , assuming the wind factor is not too strong .
I am looking forward to seeing what the A2s has in it
Good information. Thanks!
Cheers
great video until you said fpv is starting..... fpv was a thing before camera drones, since they are more technically difficult to fly they arent a super mainstream but there are many pilots that started 6, 7, 8 years ago..
Oh I realize that. But as a more widely used method of capturing video it’s really just starting to come into more and more mainstream use
@@JakeSloan i didnt want to sound like a hater just thought perhaps you didnt know that this hobby is older than most people know... but all good you do great videos
Amazing Video
Thanks!
Good video just subscribed
Thank you!
A Great Video , Thank You
Thanks
If you can afford an DJI Avata 2 and a DJI Mini 4 pro you probably won't need any other drone. That's what I got and haven't needed another one, but I still want more I can't help myself. Im a self confessed drone addict.
agreed
Thanks for sharing,
You're welcome
Both.....HAHA. Love the shots and the thoughts you share in here, super informative! 💯✔️🙏
Thanks and I agree!!!
if you want to learn flying fpv drones go get a controller and practice in a sim first
imo the dji fpv drone is to expansive for a beginner and you cant repair it yourself either and its not even close as durable than a real fpv drone
get a 100$ tiny whoop they are nearly indestructible and you can fly indoors too
i just crashed my tiny whoop in a water barrel took it out (unplug battery underwater!) dryed it and its still working
Agreed
Are you aware of any drones that do flips/rolls/stunts that are NOT FPV?
Nope none that I know of
Its probably a PoS drone with no gimbal
Frig the shots your get are so nice but just not appreciated knowbody really cares for it compared to how hard it is to get
Thanks
FWIW, FPV stand for First Person View.
yes it does
i will buy avata2❤
I just released my review of the avata 2 and its excellent for many things
Ok I thinking bout the dji fpv cause of a few things and I would like anyones comments on what I should do. I have never flew a drone really not counting like a cheap toy. I want to get into the fpv hobby. If I get dji fpv I will learn and get practice. I will have the goggles if I wish to get another fpv drone I can bind ect. So mite as spend extra money get drone and experience instead of just buying goggles stand alone. The dji fpv I like the cinema part even though there mixed reviews. I not really interested in racing ect. right now. Anyones comments welcome. Please. Thank You
Then the DJI FPV drone would be a great place to start for you
@@JakeSloan Thank You
Another greatly appreciated video, some really great shots!!
One small thing though, and maybe it’s just me nitpicking but why, why do you refer to racing type drones as “FPV drones”? Pretty sure anything you fly ( or drive for that matter) that has a camera on it and the operator can get a “windshield view” qualifies as being FPV”. I’ve been flying and driving many different platforms for years now, by looking at a monitor, tv screen, or into goggles and am I wrong that it’s all FPV?!
Thanks Larry and to an extent I agree. it's more the common way of referring to the non GPS stabilized drones
@@JakeSloan yes I know it’s definitely getting to be a common way of referring to the racing type drones, even DJI calls their new model the DJI FPV. (Surely they realize all their models are “Fpv” haha. ). Anyway cheers! Love your vids and reviews!!
Nice
Thanks.
I have both Drones
NICE
New subscriberr here.
Thanks!
@@JakeSloan By the way why can't the FPV drones be as good in taking quality photos and videos as, say, DJI's best at taking photos and videos (I think it's the Air 2S coz' it has the largest sensor of current drones out of the box), can't DJI just include all the features in one firmware (GPS, and all that) or maybe someone has figured out how to flash the firmware of the DJI FPV drone to be the one drone to rule them all?
Fpv al the way!
Definitely awesome
Meybe….Fpv…Is The best…..but I Like DRONE normal…
They are really great but for different uses.
I like gov drone
Cheers
first
Congrats! You win my respect 😜
5-6 mins flight time..? that's not impressive, i'd expect a lot more from FPV.
That’s actually quite good for FPV most are in the 3-4 min range. They are using massive amounts of power to go that fast
That is not a real fpv drone
this wasn't just the DJI FPV drone, I have footage in this video from many of my other custom built fpv drone
Its not even real fpv
Ok then
2-6 min flight time? thank you but fudging no.
That’s actually quite good for FPV drones.
