    I like to call myself a "professional" sharpener. I've practiced for years on freehand stones and fix angle systems. I've had this problem with a lot a lot a lot of knives from all price ranges. I just received my first Medford. A Midi Marauder. The edge was rounded and smooth. It still cut paper and shaved a little. But the actual edge was not crisp at all. And the sharpening angle was too high. Luckily I can sharpen it to my perfection, but still. I understand what you are saying. But the knife itself is astonishing. And IMO it cuts good due to the hollow grind and thinest behind the edge. The only knives I get where I dont have to sharpen right out of the box is Spyderco. And MAYBE Microtech. I just want to point it out that this isn't just a Medford problem. For most people it will suffice, but to one's who know enough to spend $800 on a knife, it should be sharp. No work should need to be done out of the box. No one likes that. So far I love this knife but you are 100% absolutely correct in what you're saying. The ones talking about "it's a hard use knife it shouldn't cut paper" might as well get on their knees for ole' Greg

    Just this year I’ve had a s30v 940 Osbourne, and two d2 infidels with embarrassing edges that would not cut paper. I also bought an m4 bail out that felt so so but did not last a week. I should not have to sharpen 200 to 500 dollar knives straight out of the box. I have a pm2 and para 3 that had perfect edges sharp as hell that lasted a long time. Hell even the Chinese spiderco tenacious was super sharp out of the box and still is! Bench made has not impressed me three times in a row

    Since I havnt seen anyone comment on the other side of the fence I will. I am not a Medford “fan boy” I do like medfords, I have a few. And I am near a dealer who always has a very good amount of not only Medford’s but a great selection of what I would consider medfords competition in stock. I have never seen a Medford with asymmetrical grinds yet and have I been looking since seeing this video. So I am not sure if you got one that was from a bad batch. Either way for the price you should have perfection. So I understand your frustration there. I will also point out that Medfords are overbuilt tanks. They are not designed to be able to filet a fish like a PM2 or something. They fit into two categories IMO. 1. Collectors for knife enthusiasts. 2. For people who use and abuse knife’s. People that use thier knives for things that knife’s are not designed for. I fall into this category. I am a knife enthusiast but I also am extremely hard on knives. I pry with them, I beat on them etc etc. and because I have snapped so many tips and taken so many chunks out of knife edges I tend to carry a heavier knife like a Medford. Are they the best slicers no but they do what they are designed to do which is to cut things and not break when being rough on them. I primarily carry one of two knives every day, one being a Medford Fighter Flipper when I’m at work, or a benchmade contigo when I’m not at work. Even the Contigo to most people is overkill and a huge knife. But compared to the Medford it’s tiny. And comparative the Contigo is a razor blade. So it’s subjective, preference, and you can’t really compare a Medford to a cheap free smith and Wesson that is a fraction of the blade thickness. You’re not comparing apples to apples. Anyway, impressive resharpen on that one you did there, looks great. If I had two of the same Medfords I may consider lowering the angle on one to make it a slicer. But I don’t so I prefer the steeper edge that will ultimately be stronger. Cheers

    Thanks for the honest critique on that knife. My best and most expensive knife is a CRK. It was very sharp right out of the box but as with every knife I purchase I personally resharpen each one to meet my liking. I don't think it's an OCD moment but more of personal expectations for USA made merchandise. Maybe a regrind would best suit that knife IMO.

    This is exactly my complaint about spyderco knives… One time I was at a knife store with a very helpful owner, we went through an entire spyderco shipment and could not find one unit with good bevels. This was not only based on Colorado factory, but also on seki city Japanese factory, and Taiwan factory. I can find many knives for one third the price or less that come ground and sharpened correctly. It is really quite a shame. Also, overall construction and quality of spyderco knives makes them extremely overpriced, I will never buy a spyderco, or other similar mainstream brand product.

    • @CuttingBoardRx
      @CuttingBoardRx  7 месяцев назад

      I actually own fewer Spydies than Medfords. It’s easier to find reasons not to buy Spyderco than any other production knives. The blade shapes, blade to handle length ratio, the monotony of knife after knife being basically the same is a turn off. But to be honest, I’ve never seen a bad edge on the Spyderco knife. Are you sure they weren’t Benchmades? Shit-edge is kind of BM signature.

    I just checked a couple in front of me. Perfect grind to the naked eye, finger print grabbing sharp (could butcher with it). New, safe jobs. I think I may know why you got the 20% off, a couple that may have bounced back a few time to the vendor(s)? Not typical but a couple that got out that aren't like the rest and were returned? CRK said anyone can make a great knife, try and make a thousand and every one identical. That's damn hard. I don't make them, just buy a few. When I started, I never could get a knife as sharp as the factory. I do remember the first Henckles that I sharpened and finally it was sharper than factory. Big turn on, ever since I expect to sharpen a new knife before use. Medfords are made for peace. I recommend looking at Boker for a folding butcher knife, one with a thin blade, flat primary 40-45 degree edge grind. 1/3 the Medford price. Both brands will outlast you me with reasonable care and use.

    This is common issues sadly with many makers and its sad. On an $8 knife, fine. But $800, unacceptable. I have lots of Medfords as well as many of the other major knife brands such as CRK, Hinderer, Spartan Blades, etc. Edge grinds bother me when they are poorly done. In the past month I have returned 2 Medfords to their respective dealers because of this. Those totaled over $2300 combined. A Fat Daddy & Marauder H Tanto. The design and sculpting is the most beautiful I have owned, but the edge grinds I could just not deal with. Maybe its nitpicky of me, but it just bothers me. CRK & Spartan are the most constant in my experience, Hinderer the blade grinds are not bad, but every XM has a different detent. You would think they would have gotten that down pat by now. Medford I have gotten to the point that I look at the pics closely and look at the edge grind and decide. I do think back in the day when the makers themselves were doing the final sharpening, there was much better consistency and edge perfection. Now, it seems more hit and miss to me..........They also come scratched Many Times. I know its a "stonewashed" finish, but they do not all have that finish, but handling during final mfg could be improved...... Sharpness varies with every maker also. Some come shaving sharp while others need a few swipes on a sharpmaker to take that burr off I am guessing.

    • @thomasnye5002
      @thomasnye5002 10 месяцев назад

      I have noticed that as well. I know some are stonewashed and that's what stonewashing is, but that's not every finish. I have also bought several that had scratches..... The edge grinds are what gets me the most. I can scuff up a handle on its first carry and if I am going to carry it, so be it. But with edge grinds, once the steel is removed, its not going back. Both could be easily solved with some extra care. Especially with an item costing as much as it does. In no way bashing as I have dozens of them, but definitely can agree and share some of your comments and concerns. @@CuttingBoardRx

    Let me preface by saying i own a gigantes and a m-48 with another gigantes on order. I dont even use them, but the second gignates i will.
    So. Let me get this straight. Your mad that they are just working sharp rather than hair shaving sharp from factory. So instead of contacting anyone who would rectify the situation at no cost to you except for the hassle of time, you throw a hissy fit and publish it for the world to see. Idk if Medford still does this, but there is literally a card with his own cell phone number on it.
    My first Sebenza came from the factory with one side of the edge being a completely different angle than the other. Work sharp, but dulled crazy fast and I had to get it reground locally.
    The asymmetry, yes. MAJOR issue for me. Good thing i can just call the company and they will make it right…
    Shit happens. The money is cause these are all hand done, $8 blades are machine sharpened. Im using my blades anyway so they will get that dull after about a day. If im never gonna use them, then who cares, im buying it for the craftsmanship and artistic appeal, cause guess what, a knife only matters as a knife of you are gonna use it as a knife and not a toy. If you are gonna use it, its still gonna cut, very well. If it is THAT much of an issue, return it, call the company, get it fixed. The only thing this video does is show you threw tantrums as a child and it was tolerated. Now. How these issues passed QC is beyond me for any company that charges 3 figures for a blade. Maybe it was a friday afternoon or early monday morning. Maybe the guys wife didnt suck his dick. Call them, have them make it right. If they dont THEN post a video. Most people cant even afford one of these things, and you got lucky to but two on sale, and this is the risk when buying a knife off a website when you cant actually inspect it. And its a shame the retailer didnt look either. I use to inspect every forearm that come through the shop, and sent a few back cause they were unacceptable. S&W revolvers. Worst part was the company knew, and didnt care. They did make it right however.
    I digress. This video has its merits, but its a tantrum before a solution was sought after.

      @@CuttingBoardRxokay. But then what is the sample size of the issue compared to all the products released under their brand, model, and guy on the machine? Not to get completely scientific method on you, but I’m not gonna claim Medford, Microtech, Chris Reeves, and Dawson Knives(only brands i had an issue with first hand were CRK and DK, the others were what I’ve heard) are terrible in any way as demonstrated with a handful of knives over the production of hundreds to thousands a year, and I doubt we have seen a sample size big enough to warrant such criticism. Again, I will digress, but the only company I have had a gripe with, that I have seen first hand have a significant sample size, and second hand, is Emerson Knives. Granted their knives are not marketed as anything but weapons/tools, but they have the least consistent actions, and charge 2-3 times too much for the materials and craftsmanship. I still defend them cause a Hummer, while more capable than many vehicles, is overpriced for what you get and these knives are not meant for “pretty”, and in their actual USE, the price made more sense. When I had to sell a customer on a S&W, I told them the issues, but its still an S&W, and they will/have made their mistakes correct. Im the worst salesman cause I’m honest, and I still would be able to sell a $1,000 gun that had a QC failure(never with safety mainly aesthetics, but they were foxed by that point), why? Because a few products does not equate to the failure of the brand, nor warrant such critique unless efforts were not made by the company to rectify any and all issues(if they only offered a straight refund and no replacement Id take your side 100%)

      Sharpened pry bar, is a fun term! Basically excusing your 700 dollar cutting tool, from having the need to cut. Even though the word “sharpened”implies that it might cut you, if you use your pry bar incorrectly. Nothing like a good ol joke, at the expense of your customers, who believed enough in your product, to pay your joke of a price.

    The joke is on you! When you buy folding knives designed to be tanks you shouldn't expect them to cut like razors. When they don't cut like razors, you take off to youtube to whine and moan about it. Unsubscribed!
