Honestly after searching for an hour this is The best video on how to replace the springs on these engines! Thank you for supplying the thickness as well saved some searching!
I'm a RUclips mechanic when it comes to my mini bikes maintenance! Your videos are priceless, I got the stage 1 kit from Go Power sports for my Coleman ct200u ex, the only thing that's stalling me is the valve spring swap. Thanks for all the detailed information it's greatly appreciated!
Down South squonks! It’s a pain in the fuckin ass I started my 18lb swap two hours ago I’m still trying to get them back in.. I do not have a spring compressor sadly
You guys push them on the spring cap retainer using a deep socket
Down south I need help to adjust my hemi rockers I installed my cam I ddnt add oil yet give me a video or some good tips
Had a little brain fart when adjusting the lash. You need to go one step higher in the lash setting. So if I calls for .008 do .009. The metal will expand when hot. Just wanted to note this because of course the whole internet will not let me live it down. Thanks for watching.
HELP!!! how does effect low rpm speed (does it take longer to get to top speed?)
Can I put 22 pounds Springs On a 212 cc predator
Hey man I'm still getting a ton of compression with those gaps. Too tight to even pull
You could break up a old spark plug and put a hole into it and weld a air chuck to it and use a compressed air to old the values up it works amazing and saves a lot of time
so it's gonna be .007 for intake and .009 for the other? just checking before I do it.
I watch this video like five times before installing my 18lb value springs. I’m learning a lot watching your videos.
i thought i was crazy watching it over an over again

I was stupid lost my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Skyler Franklin Instablaster ;)
Thank you Red Beard. My valve retainer caps got mixed up and I did not remember which went were and did not notice the difference between them till after the fact. Your video clearly showed which was which. You saved me a giant headache. You also saved me another headache trying to find the mysterious missing little valve lash cap, there was only one in the first place. Your videos are great keep up the good work.
😂 ive been looking for that mysterious lash cap...i thought the motor ate it up...i thought i dropped it....man am i glad....does it go on the exhaust or intake 😂 i cant remember...i thought it was exhaust
I jus picked me a hemi today my self thanks to you...you inspired me to biuld mine too always wanted a gokart my self learning from you red beard Garage!!!! Love your vid brother keep them up... subscribed!!!!
Removed the governor and replaced the valve springs, and set the lash today and it worked great. Thank you for the easy to follow video
What did you set your lashes to? I can hardly pull my engine over now and it just wont start and backfires alot
Thanks for the info. Been getting all my parts from go power sports from Oliver and Jason. Great guys. Karts are running great. Thanks from R&R Custom Welding in Nampa Idaho.
YOU ARE THE MAN .YOUR VIDS ARE THE ONLY ONES I USE NOW..BEEN WATCHING THEM FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW...GREAT JOB!!!
Got 18lb springs and a exhaust on the way got this video book marked for reference great explaining on what to do. Plan on doing a carb change on a month then maybe a torque converter
Thank you for this video! I have a 196cc (Coleman) I used your valve lash specs and it worked perfectly! 18lb valve springs installed and running strong!
Please tell me specifically what each valve you set too and how you had the valve’s positioned (when turning the engine) i cant pull mine over anymore and it backfires
Great vid! Just installed the 18lb value spring on my 196cc build.
New to the sport, your vids are the tops. Making my 212 run just right. Thanks You Much!!
Thanks for watching man!
Blessed. Been waiting for this.
Would I use the same adjustment for my Titan tx200? Also after removing my governor will it be ok to use the 18lbs springs on a current stock engine? Or should I go with the 10.8lbs for the time being?
Thanks.
Wow I’ve built a lot of small blocks and big blocks now I’m teaching my kids small engine work or should I say you are lol your awesome my son and I watch your videos in the shop while we work thx be safe
Loved the vid and when do you think the next 4 seater build will come out ?
Are the springs the same part number for both motors, hemi and non hemi? I have 18lb springs I put on my old non hemi and would like to put them in my new hemi motor.
What you think of honda gx670 I have one with a few issues but should be fine
Had a quick question stage 1 kit and governor removal and the 18 pound valves what do I set my intake and exhaust lash at please help thanks
Hey red beard, is it okay to add 18lb valve springs on a stock bottom end stage 1 predator? Have you had any issues? I just want a little more rpm from my motor without going to stage 2. Thanks.
Bout to pull my stick springs out today an install 18 lbs. thanks for the vid.
Excellent video you explained it very well and it should be pretty easy for me to do a set of valve Springs after watching this on eother head type engine keep up the videos you guys are awesome
Will adding a heavier valve spring cause premature wear to the cam?? Just recently got back into the carting for my son and Hell for me who my lying lol ..thanks in advance love your videos...
Will the stock rocker arms be able to hold the pressure of 36 lbs valve springs
SOME non hemi predators have a 3 piece valve caps. I found it easier to pull the cylinder head off to take the caps off. the issue being the rope wasn't stiff enough to hold the valve in place. and feeler gauges sell for about 7 bucks at any auto parts store. and just remember all lash is set on a cold engine
Nice job, Thanks for sharing the difference between the two engines
hey red do I need springs if doing kit from your store for air and pipe and jet.also got belt clutch kit..so do I need the 18 springs or leave it alone..thanks
First and I have got to say I have learned so much from you on how to do things thanks for everything keep doing a good job
No problem man, thanks for watching and supporting the channel.
I would say 18lb would be a good upgrade. I don't mess with the briggs much
What kind of rpm would you consider safe with the factory flywheel?
Do you need to install the valve springs? What happens if you dont & run the stock ones with all the other stage one parts?
Could you just put a lash cap on the side that doesnt have one on the non hemi or would that create issues instead of eliminating them?
I've been watching the video, and searching all over the Internet and everybody seems to have a different answer. my question is, what is the valve lash intake and exhaust for a predator 212 that has the 18-pound valve springs? Only performance upgrades I have done is a header exhaust and an air filter
The instructions I got with my kit say .003"(three thousandths) but I set them to .0045" because of metals expanding.
I put 18 pound valve springs on my new motor and it runs awesome torque monster
@Red Beard's Garage ...I upgraded to the 18# springs and I've adjusted the valves, both @ .003 then installed the carb jet kit... now my engine pops when I accelerate. Did I maybe put the carb gaskets back on wrong... or ??? - PUZZLED. :( Oh, and I added an OMB header w/weenie muffler.
This is a great way of showing how to do this mod! Thx Red Beard!
Hey man! Great video!
I have a hemi predator 212, i took out the governor, so I'm also going to upgrade springs.
You have a link to a hemi and non hemi set. The non hemi set from omb says they work on hemi as well. Any reason you recommend the other ones? Or does it not really matter? Thanks for any info!
Can i do this to a just completely stock predator or does it need to be modded first? Just wondering cause i thought it'd be easier to do then, minus one thing to do when i fully upgrade my predator then.
Does the lash cap just pop off and on is it magnetized or press fit
Hey man I have a massive warrior 200, the Baja warrior 200 are the same bikes but do you know the head bolt torque and the the head cover bolt torque I have a torque wrench I just need the bolt torques
Thanks
Very GOOD ILLUSTRATION. So many configs !! I may just wait for a 212 r maybe .
Red Beard's Garage What about the stock engine on the CT200U-EX? Is it the same valve springs and settings as the Predator?
Following
I have a predator 212cc engine and upgrades the air intake, exhaust and the fuel jet. I was wondering if I should upgrade the valve springs to 18 lbs without taking the governor out. I have a pair of 18lbs spring laying around and don't know if it will make a difference if the governer is still in?
I love this Channel bro. Thanks for the tutorials.
Thanks for watching man
Great videos Red Beard! Is the non-Hemi valve spring replacement seen in this video the same process on a CT200U engine? I'm a newbie to engine modifications and was wondering if I can follow the instructions in this video and have it apply to my CT200U or if there are some things that are slightly different.
Yes it is
How often do you adjust the new valve set up? I would guess the heavier springs. After prolonged use will create a mushroomed valve seat over time
I don't have a set time I do it. I would say every few oil changes
My non-hemi had no lash cap, keepers instead of the "keyed" retainers and a seal on the intake valve. I guess they change things up every now and then?
I have a gx200 clone on a Baja Warrior 200. I completely bypassed the governor (left the spring to tension the governor arm and keep it on the internal gear/adjuster). I have noticed that the engine runs very rough when revving past 3600. Is this normal, or valve float? It feels like something is unbalanced.
N ware could I get race parts for my b/s 7hp motor n idk wat of clutch I should run a tourq convertor or a reg clutch ??
I know this is a really old video (hopefully you see this), but I have a Coleman CT200U-EX with the 196cc clone (non hemi). is the valve lashing space the same as the non hemi in this video?
Take a look at your manual or just google it. It's a very common bike.
Hey redbeard your vids are the best. They are always the best. What is the first performance mod I should do to a stock predator 212 or 420?
Remove the governor
What is the valve lash on a 196cc 18 lb valves spring ?
Just replaced my head on my hemi but I didn't do the feeler gage on the lash. I'm assuming that why it wouldn't start. Gotta do that tomorrow. Thank you red beard these videos been a savior.
Greetings I hope you are well I would like to know how many pounds I should mount the springs of a honda clone gx240 8hp I eliminated the governor and they have told me that if I do not put stronger springs the engine will break due to overdrawing what should I do. thanks take care of all.
if i take off the governor on the hem engine do i need to change anything else?
Hey man, I bought Honda gx340 valve springs as they looked beefy.. will these fit on my gx200? Thanks in advance man.. you got some good videos!
Incredible video describing the process. I have a 212 Hemi. I noticed you said "you don't have to adjust the valves after putting in 18lb valve springs." At the end however you mentioned adjusting the valves. Im about to do this spring swap and just want to make sure im following the correct steps. So just put 18lb springs in and giver her hell? Appreciate the help!
@Twitch Fish I checked them and they were very close. Did wind up tweaking barely I believe.
This video answered my question Very helpful video
Trying to replace head gasket on tillotson 212 but the rockers are in the way of the head bolts. Awesome that the lash is always set on hemi motors this is gonna be a breeze now. Take care, partner
If you upgrade air filter, jets, 140 E tube, and 18 lb. springs,...do you have to do the billet rods and flywheel in order to remove the governor ?
You don't have to but it is highly recommended
Never worked on a Hemi now I know. Appreciate all the info
THANK YOU! @3:33 I’ve been web searching for over an hour looking for this confirmation. Thinking I must have dropped mine down the motor
how would you go about building a twin predator 212 go kart with a live axle? would you use clutches or TC? how would you link up the throttles? any info will be well received.
Two engines, two cvt, link the carbs up with either a rod or two cables.
I had bought some valve springs 22-pound. I didn't mean to get such strong ones, but will they work or should I return them? I have a Honda GX200. Mikuni carburetor setup remove governor custom-built frame mini bike first timer Builder My main question is a 22lb spring for my setup. To strong of spring? And thanks to you for all the help through your videos.
Would 301cc springs work in either application?
Hey man I got a 224 and hemi swapped it and deleted the govern and when ever I rev it up my rocker colapses you think I need stiffer spring or what do you recommend? And valve lashed it so it ran normal no knocking or any just collapsed at high rpm on stock springs
Do you need to put some rope in the spark plug while when changing the valve springs in the hemi predator?
Yes
on the non hemi if you lose the lash cap is it important? or can it run without it
I have never used a set of feeler gauges on these. I have always just tightened the rockers down until they barely have any wiggle and have had zero issues.
Nice video. You have a new subscriber! As of today 5-23-2020. Do you suggest the hemi or the non hemi predator 212 engine for a replacement for a 3.5 tecumseh for a minibike that won’t be raced. Only mods I may do are the governor ziptie or possible remove it. Maybe down the road stage 1 intake/exhaust/ rejet. The non hemi is tough to get right now but there is a hemi available at my closest harbor freight. What would you suggest from your experience? Thank you for the input !
I got a question. When it comes to valvetrain I’m not smart. Why do you have to adjust the lash?
whats a good valve lash number for the hemi 18 pound spring
I plan on running only premium in my predator 212 because I can get that ethanol free, not looking to build a crazy engine, I'm keeping the govorner so that it's "idiot proof" ill be running a free flowing air filter and exhaust simply because of what its going in, but it seems like I should bump compression ratio to take advantage of the higher octane rating, any advice?
hello red beard I know the vid is a little old now but is the valve springs the same on both hemi and non predator 212s ?
+Rooney they say there a little different but I have always ran the non hemi springs in all my engines with out a problem
I'm currently running a stage 4 predator with a mod2cam...I believe with 18lb springs, I'm still getting vale float..any suggestions?
Thank you i lost a 212 to bad valves, they came off while i was riding and i had no idea hiw to fix ir
I got one of these hemi predators on a go kart I got on Craigslist and it's extremely hard to pull it's not locked up and pulls like normal if you remove the spark plug what could be the problem
My nom hemi predator didn’t have a latch cap on the exhaust side. Is this something new Predator started doing with their newer non hemi motors? The motors brand new hasn’t been ran yet rebuilding a golf cart.
I am building up my new predator 212cc and would like to know what torque converter I should buy. I know TAV 30 series is a decent converter how ever should I purchase the 40 series as I do plane to add the general power adders to increase power.
Only the 30 is necessary
Best detailed video yet!
Hey Red quick question I have a stock cam on a 212 pred non hemi no governor I put 22lbs spring cause I had them laying around. Would you recommend that I go to 18lbs for better performance? It doesn't run as good as I want?
Hello Mr. Beard, I have the Coleman CT200u-ex camo. Is there an upgrade valve spring available for it? How does it compare to the one in your video. Thanks!
Just buy the 18lb valve springs on go power sports. They will work for that engine thats on the bike
I have the 212 hemi and I read that it has 18 lb stock springs so I'm upgrading to the 26 lb ones. My question is what do the springs do besides the obvious being springy... and what are the pros and cons of the different weights?
They are stronger valve springs which help with the motor when it is in high rpm
What do I do in my situation. The rope didn’t hold the valve in place and it dropped down and the valve is level with the exit hole of the head any ideas
Does this work with the stock motor on an EX?
is 18lb recommended, or is bigger (22lb) better?
Thanks for your videos. They help me out so much.
Thank you for watching and supporting!
Can you use 22lb springs on a stock cam/push rods/rockers? I know they can be used with the stock retainers but that’s about it.
I used them on my stock 212.... Been installed about a month Other than it being slightly harder to pull start due to the 22lb springs/compression it is running better than it ever has.
I have a problem hopefully you can help me. OK I bought a go-kart at a yard sale. Has the 212 Predator motor from Harbor Freight . Here's the problem it will start but only for a second and only once. It's got oil / gas. I've even used starter fluid and nothing helps. ? Any ideas??? And the motor sounds good no weird sounds
Frances Adams does it have spark? If not... Change the ignition coil for 10 bucks on amazon
Do you need to set the valve last for 22lb valve springs on the hemi predator 212 ??
whats do i need to set the lash to on my predator 212 non hemi if i have 18lb springs?
Im running a stock preadtor 212 hemi with a 3 staged header and vm22 slide carb. Im planning on Install9ng these springs to reduce valve float. Do I need to add anything else to add them or can I just put em in there?
Do you have to change the springs if you change out jet muffler and air cleaner ??????
What do the stiffer springs do?
Is the valve lash the same for the hemi? If not, what should they be set to? I also have another question, my predator 212 has a removed governor and an modified stock air filter box, and the motor has been studdering at high rpm, everything is stock except for the governor and advanced timing. Thanks, Kris
+xTERMINATORx 1000 I would check and see if it's running lean
got a hemi and the intake side rocker arm, for me to get the pin through the middle I had to compress the spring right off the bat like I had to work in there and the exhaust side one just slid right out idk if I did some wrong or its supposed to be like that.
just re adjust the valve lash I did the same and all I did was re do it and everything was fine
Hey RB. Thanks again for an awesome tutorial. I did the governor removal and had a washer get stuck behind the cam shaft so I pulled the cam to retrieve it. When I pulled the cam the lifters fell into the crank case and I just stuck them back in. I noticed both lifters were all the way up / flush when I put the cam back in. I lined up the dots on the cam when I re-installed it. Everything went back together fine. I also installed a mikuni 22 carb. Before I mounted the engine on the minibike, I tried starting it, it felt really low on compression and wouldn't start. Does this sound like the rods fell off when the lifters dropped? I ordered a set of 18 pound springs from GPS but they haven't arrived yet. I was going to remove the valve cover when I get the springs in. Thanks!
Take the valve cover off and look at the push rods and make sure they are still under the rockers
Yep, they fell off.
My retainers have keepers. There was no way I could get the 18lb springs back on with the keeper/retainer setup. Any ideas.
Eat some Wheaties
Hi Red Beard, like your videos. Can you tell me the crankshaft bolt specs on the predator clone 212 Hemi. Appreciate any help
you can give me. I tried the bolt in the kit and it's binding up (8mm x 1.25).
Late reply, but 5/16 ×24
How do you put the piston at top dead center?
When changing the spring or working on the inside of the valve cover, do I need to drain the oil? Or Am I on the safe side from spillage by leaving the oil in the motor?
You don’t need to drain
But on the other hand give the oil a change
Hello redbeard just subscribed love your videos i just bought a 212 non hemi im gona remove govenor and oil sensor maybe put a stage one on it do you recommend i do the 18 lb springs
David Kuznetsov if i was you i would, but the right thing to do would be to put in a billet today and flywheel before taking the govenor off. if u can only get one i would get the rod because people don’t have much problems with the flywheel in it with just a few mods
