Dennis, you remembered! Now for the washers that are concave or convex. They're called Belleville washers. They are both a washer as well as a spring. The Daiwa Saltist 40 looks like a nice reel. Love the big stack of drag washers. IMO, adding a level wind to a reel overly complicates the reel and requires to use of metal gears to wind the line on a heavy reel. A HDPE gear would probably end up stripping the teeth in no time. I might have to add a couple to the collection after seeing this one.
Dennis, I would love it if you ever get the opportunity to do a video on a Daiwa Saltist spinning reel. I’ve seen a few good deals on such a spinning reel recently but I’m not going to commit to a purchase until I know more about the reel. This Daiwa Saltist conventional reel was very interesting though. I got in my latest Ryobi DX Powerful No. 5 reel today and serviced it. It was new in the original box and I doubt it was ever even taken out of the box before. This is just about the only vintage spinner that I like almost as much as a Daiwa 7000C. The Ryobi has three excellent shielded bearings as well as that extra gear between the oscillation gear and main gear. It is an extremely smooth spinning reel. I’ve also started collecting the Compac SL spinning reel series. They are fine reels too but I have no idea who made them for Compac. - Chris PS. I’ll send photos of this recent Ryobi Powerful reel. It is a beauty!
Hi ....I have the same reel....serviced now using your video...big help thank-you....One issue I have and can't solve yet...When I tighten down the drag a bit, the handle becomes very difficult to turn...ie there is some resistance....cant seem to work out what is causing this and have opened it up several times now to check everything against your video....please can you provide some guidance...kind regs
Is the ant-reverse working correctly? You may have the dog trapped behind the main gear. If you do not have the A/R then that would cause the issue you are describing - Dennis
Hello question I tried to service my reel and now when I tighten up the drag the handle is hard to turn now I was wondering if you had any idea of what I can try?
Thank you it was the cylinder above the gears I had backwards it works now, it just vibrates when the drag is pulled does they mean my drag washers are dry?
Really nice looking Reel. I bought a nice one yesterday that may end up in Dennis's hands .
Thanks Bobby
nice reel, good to see it get maintained and out doing what it was made for

I will keep a lookout for a Saltist spinning reel and do one if I can. Those Ryobi reels are nice. Sounds like yours is mint. Enjoy!

Hello question I tried to service my reel and now when I tighten up the drag the handle is hard to turn now I was wondering if you had any idea of what I can try?
Yes - you need to recheck how you installed the drag washers and or the spool - it is likely that one or the other is causing the issue - Dennis
