I know that many folks say that the Daiwa Saltist spinning reels are very fine. Unfortunately they are way out of my price range as well as far from my primary interest in and love of vintage spinning reels. I certainly would like to try one though. This is a fascinating baitcaster and appears to be well made and popular. Thanks again for replying about my Mitchell 386 problem. It has certainly baffled me. Even after servicing, repairing, and even restoring over 30 Mitchells from France, I have just scratched the surface on the many things that can confuse a person working on them! Great video Dennis. It always amazes me how many parts on a spinning reel and a baitcaster are so similar but oriented in a different position. Even the drag washers are essentially the same. This reel had a gorgeous main gear! Speaking of braid - I only have three reels that I use braid on and two of them I probably shouldn’t as they are vintage reels made for mono. (I back them with mono. though.)
why didnt you cal grease the carbontex washer under the main gear on the AR Dog you put that one on dry. Also the grease is not to keep carbon flexible it is to avoid start up inertia and make the drag operate smoother, also to protect it from salt water intrusion. You can buy a SLP SP 4.0 screwdriver to fit those Daiwa screws which will help to stop the screw driver slipping, it locks into those special screws. Or use a hollow ground slotted screw driver. The IAR bearing should not be over oiled a drop will do, be careful of over oiling the bearing on top of that IAR, it will seep down into the IAR and could cause problems later. Also for those who dont know the cup washers under the handle should be in this orientation ()
Per Carbontex, installation instructions these washers can be installed dry as they are not absorbent and grease is not needed. You have the option to put a light coast of grease on them, but it should be wiped dry if you do. Thanks for asking Dennis
Depending on the reel - old or new, you can get parts support directly from Daiwa or you can use a distributor like Southwesternparts.com. Thanks for asking Dennis
I recently bought a Seagate ( apparently very similar internals) but it feels a bit rough out of the box . Do these reels need to break in , should I be taking it apart to lube it before using or could something be not quite right?
Are you asking about the cupped washers that sit on the gear sleeve? I generally alternate them starting with the cup facing up and then next one with the cup facing down. These are tension washers that control the sensitivity of the star adjuster - Dennis
That saltist is great reel. Loaded it half braid and top off with 40lb mono. Throws metal jigs like no tomorrow with the right rod. With tighten down drags few local inshore fish will have a chance.
Never ceases to amaze me,how some "fancy" looking reels, are actually quite simple inside.... another good video Dennis, thank you.🎣
Glad you enjoyed it. That is the beauty of a lever drag reel. Simple and dependable design - Dennis

It does not need a break in. I would return the reel or send it back to Daiwa for a replacement
What is orientation of drag spring washer?

Did someone teach how too work on fishing reels or did u teach yourself
Self taught. Still learning! - Dennis
