It was a great time to be alive for Jordan, lots of down moments that didn’t feel so down because of not just MJ but Kemp, Shaq, Bird, Robinson, Barkley, Pippen. MJ wasn’t the only one you talked about on the playground, people forget about that. You had to know your players when you traded cards wisely
I'm purely a spectator and not super well-versed in the history of the sport but his defensive stats seem to be something that stands out to me compared to many other scoring-centered greats in basketball.
Same i was 91 but i only watched 97 and 98 finals from mj so kobe was my guy too but mj was tht dude him and michael jackson prolly the 2 most famous dudes in modern era
Pip guarded magic for 1.5 games and then they went back to Mike because he was more effective. That story has been told so many times people think it's true. And the pistons were still in their prime (albeit the end of their run but an average age of 29 is still prime). The bulls almost beat them in 90 without Pip (migraine).
This is 100% true. it wasn't even a full 1.5 games. MJ guarded magic for 85% of the series. As you say tho, the story has been told so many times people think it's true. There must be so few people now that have actually watched the series that people aren't even aware they are spreading a false story. The whole series is on youtube, i always direct people to go watch it and see how much Pippen actually guarded Magic for. The other thing that always shows if people ever watched mj or not is how they assess his defence. People see the height differential and decide that Pip must have guarded the bigger wings but it was the opposite. Jordan was the far more agressive and physically strong player. Pippen got physically abused by stronger scoring wings, he was much better on smaller ball handling guards. Mj often had to switch onto the scoring sf's to shut them down whilst Pippen was getting worked. Also in the playoffs, for their careers, Jordan guarded the better wing scorer in more games and for more time than Pippen. People see Jordans lofty scoring numbers and imagine pip was the shut down guy to preserve jordans energy. That wasn't the mentality back then Mj wanted to check the other teams best player.

Man, looking at his airness highlights brought me back to when I followed him, even though I was stuck in the Azores where basketball is a non-factor. I used to watch Bulls games on a German channel at 3 am to go to school the next day. It's not only his accomplishments but the elegance of his game that really catches the eye. The GOAT.
4:00 I think a lot of people overlook the extremely rapid pace Jordan was progressing at. James Worthy said by the 3rd week, Jordan was better than him. By the time the draft happened, the Olympics took place and Jordan was the College player in the country by that point, not only that, he demolished the NBA players in their exhibition match. By the time he hit the NBA, he was already one of the top players in the NBA.
9:15 Jordan CREATED opportunities for his teammates through his own movement (as opposed to relying on everyone else moving around him), threat to score, and general creativity. He didn't just throw it to dudes who were open --- that's a silly assertion, one that's actually much more true of Luka (who, to me, isn't in the class of passer of Magic, Bird, Jokic, or, yes, MJ) than it is Jordan. Severely underrated as a passer and playmaker, that man is.

because he wanted to be acknowledged as a superstar in his own right and being cast as the "sidekick" prevents that. plus they re-exposed his failings as a player and teammate with the migraine, sitdown, desire to be traded, his rage at krause and then lastly his vengeful delay of surgery. But also the whole episode with his ex-wife was emerging at that point and his son RIP. He was going through a lot emotionally and even ripped other people like Phil, Paxson and Kukoc.... Something is obviously wrong with him, maybe some day he will recover.
He called Scottie "selfish" - that's the nail in the coffin. Scottie like most Gen-Xers has fragile ego despite the cool and calm demeanor, and he still keep the grudge with Jerry Krause - just as Bulls fans are still hating on Krause - even in his death, rather unfairly. To be fair, Scottie was pressured and agreed to that underpaid contract by himself, which Last Dance discussed in pretty great detail, why Scottie, arguably the 2nd best player in the NBA, were among the worst-paid player in the NBA. But Jordan has to put salt on his wound by calling his act of revenge "selfish" - maybe true, Pippen did enjoy and carry around his 6 finals, 6 rings record, which he almost didn't get for his vengeful act.
Scottie is just maintaining kayfabe The stats do say that Scottie Pippen won 6 titles and had greater playoff success without Michael than Michael had without Scottie (Not saying Scottie Pippen was the best player for the Bulls LOL)
Scottie does not like to look at reality, he was often a pain in the ass on the Bulls...the bad contract he signed, migraines, 1.6 seconds, back problems, no tippin Pippen... As a kid who grew up in the 90's, he was my childhood hero. No one did it with both power and finesse like Mike did. GOAT forever, and will always be the benchmark for the complete basketball player.
It was a lower scoring league in the 90s (esp. the playoffs) and Jordan was putting up 40-50 points; sometimes over half his team's points. More importantly, they were winning.
I thought this was an old video until I saw it was uploaded just 4 hours ago, with 50+ thousands of views. That speaks volume. Even if MJ's legacy was almost 3 decades ago, up to this date, people are still talking about the GOAT. To me MJ is the equivalent of Mohammad Ali in Boxing, Valentino Rossi in MotoGP, and Usain Bolt in Running. He's purely amongst the undisputed timeless Faces of their own Sports, no doubt. 🐐☝️
I love the Jordan = Ali take. My thoughts exactly. The photos they took together goes HARD. I'd even go as far as to say Michael Jordan for NBA is equivalent to Michael Jackson for Music.
@brody_gains I swear, there have been 2 videos of the GOAT debate that both had VERY, thoroughly studied evidence that said MJ is the GOAT. LeBron is statically better. But when it comes down to everything else, MJ is WAY better than LeBron.
i mean lebron is statistically better because of longevity, not necessarily in terms of averages and winning. jordan had the better prime and won more. imo thats better, but some people prefer longevity over a better prime, which in that case they probably prefer lebron as the goat.
The goat is not a subjective title it’s elective every few years we look at the contenders and decide whether or not they have surpassed the current goat Mike after his 93 title run was elected goat he has not been dethroned since don’t believe me well whenever the vote is counted he always wins by a landslide regardless of who votes including active NBA players
That’s just not how reality works. It’s subjective. People can have different opinions and you need to accept that. There’s no ballot box collecting votes.
Agree, you can’t touch anyone now. Back then they were taking elbows and serious contact. Yet people still think others hold a candle to MJ. Sorry folks, it’s not even a discussion. Yes, LeBron is a big guy, but he’s scoring without having people smash him. Even with that he hasn’t touched MJ. Imagine prime MJ playing today where nobody can touch you?
@@Nezie22 Do you really think 2024 NBA has lower level than 90s NBA? In 2024 players are more athletic in general and still stronger. The fact modern judges follow the rules more strictly doesn't make modern players softer. The pace of the game from 90s isn't even close to 2024 G League's. MJ was weak shooter from 3pt. He only had good % from 3pt when they had much shorter 3pt line. Look how many 3pt are made in modern NBA per game by each team, especially by recent champions Boston. Not only pace and 3pt shooting level is much higher now. Average 2024 NBA team would be a champion team in 90s. Another issue is MJ had much better teammates as for 90s, than Lebron had in had in his career for his time.
@@polishguy1900 because there is no contact nowdays. When you are constantly hand checked, pushed, held on to, its much harder to shoot threes, or do anything really. Imagine anyone doing to Lebron, what 'bad boys' did to Jordan, he would retire.

Great video. Jordan showed us what's possible in a human. Not just with basketball or sports, but with the mind, willpower and determination. You don’t know how lucky you were if you got to grow up watching MJ play in the 80s and 90s. I was born in 89, but didn’t start watching NBA until around 98ish. So I grew up on Kobe..I feel lucky for that, but come on, who doesn’t want to grow up watching MJ entire career play out
Pure fact.
I wish I did, I was born the year 2000 and got to watch kobe in his later years but grew up watching lebron.
0:18 now that's a record that will never be broken
24:55 I love how you summarized our GOAT video 🐐
Yep Bulls were primed for a title in 1990...Pippen was not ready to take that next step...they just needed something out of him.
And Bron beat the prime pistons without a Pip. Crazy.

The GOAT.
So sad I wasn't lucky to watch him playing and winning those championship with my own eyes. Man was a highlight machine
One of The Best NBA Players of All Time and Never Lost In The NBA Finals Either
9:15 Jordan CREATED opportunities for his teammates through his own movement (as opposed to relying on everyone else moving around him), threat to score, and general creativity. He didn't just throw it to dudes who were open --- that's a silly assertion, one that's actually much more true of Luka (who, to me, isn't in the class of passer of Magic, Bird, Jokic, or, yes, MJ) than it is Jordan. Severely underrated as a passer and playmaker, that man is.

I still can't understand why Scottie was so sensitive about the Last Dance. Time and time again Jordan talked about how much he needed Scottie....
because he wanted to be acknowledged as a superstar in his own right and being cast as the "sidekick" prevents that. plus they re-exposed his failings as a player and teammate with the migraine, sitdown, desire to be traded, his rage at krause and then lastly his vengeful delay of surgery.
But also the whole episode with his ex-wife was emerging at that point and his son RIP.
He was going through a lot emotionally and even ripped other people like Phil, Paxson and Kukoc....
Something is obviously wrong with him, maybe some day he will recover.
Scottie has always been miserable. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a pro athlete who is more uncomfortable in his own skin.
Scottie is just maintaining kayfabe
The stats do say that Scottie Pippen won 6 titles and had greater playoff success without Michael than Michael had without Scottie
(Not saying Scottie Pippen was the best player for the Bulls LOL)
Scottie does not like to look at reality, he was often a pain in the ass on the Bulls...the bad contract he signed, migraines, 1.6 seconds, back problems, no tippin Pippen... Scottie was a great player but as great as Scottie was he was not Michael Jordan...Jordan was light years better on the offensive side of the ball and in mental toughness.
Thanks for including the rare highlights. I tell younger kids his best highlights they rarely show. I'm 41 and he will always be the GOAT to me on the court.

Jordan also played in an era where defense was actually a thing.
In an era with rough players like Hakeem, Barkley, and Bill Laimbeer who weren't afraid to hurt you in the paint.
Yea, the era were double teaming was banned and nobody guarded anyone outside of 15 feet
@@mosstwig3591 stg Mfs dont realize if you went to the wing iso, no one could help
Don’t forget the game was a lot slower back then. Yeah the rules changed for offense as time went on, making defense harder and loosening the carry rules and adding the zero step, but defense is also harder now bc of how fast players have gotten. And shooting opens up the floor, have to guard all the way up or you risk a made 3 since everyone can shoot now.
@brandoward8860 you ignorant. Double teaming the ball handler is allowed under the illegal defense rules. That's just a dumb thing to say.

Wemby needs to keep developing. but Joker just needs to keep doing what he's doing for another 10 years give or take. If Dude averages a 30 pt triple double for his career, and he plays long enough, how do you not make him the GOAT?
@JayLandon64 Lol Jokic is great on offensive but he could never be the Goat due to his non existence defense, Hakeem is closer to The Goat Status than Jokic
@@jugg7621 Jokic is 8th in the League in steals. Not exactly non-existent defense. He doesn't get many blocks, true, because he can't jump over a tennis shoe. But top 10 in steals is not non-existent defense.
