This episode is a metaphor for the way some men treat women in college. Joss was ahead of his time with raising such important topics. That's why it's so disappointing and disturbing how he treated people.
As someone who has been to a fair amount of frat parties I can attest that the portrayal in media is accurate. Every one I ever went to had a large snake man in the basement.
I think some of the creep factor is supposed to be mitigated by the fact they are both supernatural he is a vampire and she is a bad ass superhero like Slayer, but I get if you just look at them as two people how it would creep some people out.
Darcie's not just watching "Buffy", she's being funny and entertaining. Thanks for that! As far as American fraternities go, the best film representation of that subject is "National Lampoon's Animal House", featuring Mark Metcalf (the Master character from season one of "Buffy")
Hardass Willow 19:30 - 19:45 giving it to Giles and Angel (I love how helpless to respond they both are) is the best. You're not the first to question the appropriateness of Buffy's outfits. At the time, a lot of people wondered what high school would allow a student to dress that way.
There's many non Bangel (Buffy/Angel shippers) shippers. So don't worry if you don't like the idea. I never looked at Mechida as the monster in this episode. Mechida, to me, was the metaphor behind the frat boys (although it represented other metaphors as well). Callie Anderson (the girl who gets kidnaped in this episode) might be one of my top favorite single episode characters.
Giles is like Buffy's Father figure Darcy and he's the only one who's going to tell her like it is, most of the time he gives in and just lets her have her way but there are other times where he has to put his foot down and let her know when he's serious
@@erickwebster1973 we just saw Buffy's Father 6-7 episodes earlier and Buffy was very happy to see him. That is Buffy's father, what you are doing now is not taking responsibility for your actions, that is cool. But it is a choice you make, to pass that along as fact is on you.
I absolutely get the concerns about Bangel but I've always taken it with a pinch of salt because it's a supernatural show. I was in love with Bangle when I was younger 😂

@@seanmcmurphy4744 There was definitely concern about Twilight. More for other reasons, though. Did you just refer to Angel as Mr. Lurks-a-lot? 🤣 Yes! Thank you! Look, I never was here for any kind of romance between Buffy and Angel. I appreciate him as backup and an ally to the Scoobies. He is 241, too old for her and way more experienced in life than her. She's still learning and growing. I'd be into it if she were over 20 yrs old. Plus, to me, Angel was red flags since Day 1 lol. And you ship Xander with Cordelia?!? Oh gosh. Can you imagine THAT relationship? Again, love that Xander is always there looking out for his friends. I also loved it when Willow went off on Giles and Angel lol. I hated these college guys. It was all icky vibes from them. And yes, heavy topics.
After this they went more with CGI (still very expensive at this point) because putting a guy in a rubber suit and waving him around on a boom wasn't cutting it. Great fun episode nonetheless.
It never occurred to me before but we've got Angel remarking on the age gap between him and Buffy in a episode where we've got frat boys in college not caring that they're several years older than these 16-year-old high school girls...is that supposed to make us okay with the 200+ years age gap? 0_o Also..I think the papier-mâché snake is a not-subtle phallic symbol? But I'm not certain, lol.
There's more to Buffy the show than Buffy and Angel. A lot more. Btw, when she says 'when you kiss me I wanna die', that doesn't mean an actual death. It means a metaphorical Shakespearean 'death', la petite mort. Which is, er, something quite different.
So with the whole age thing as far as Bangel goes I was gonna say that one could go with the whole Twilight Defense in that his brain would have stopped developing at the time of his turning but bro was 26 when he was turned so never mind haha 😄
Back when I was first looking at colleges, I outright rejected any that had a Greek culture on campus. There are plenty that don't, and I wanted nothing to do with the Fraterrnity/Sorority thing, even at a remove.
@@seanmcmurphy4744 You know, weirdly enough, it somehow never occurred to me to wonder whether those schools without Greek organizations on campus were that way because they'd actually banned them, or whether they'd just never developed that campus culture in the first place? In retrospect, I suppose they must have passed deliberate policies to exclude them. Huh. Anyway, just off the top of my head, I remember Amherst, Wesleyan, Oberlin, Carleton, Haverford, Swarthmore, Smith, and Vassar (and I think maybe the rest of the Seven Sisters as well?) as schools with no Greek life on campus. This was back in the 1980s, though, so it's possible things have changed since then. Also, as is surely clear from this list, I was specifically interested in attending a small liberal arts college. It might be harder to find large universities or more STEM-oriented schools free from the Greek organizations.
@@elkins4406 Also, even if they don't encourage abuse, the whole purpose of fraternities (and probably sororities) is to help the children of the elite get good jobs and perpetuate an exclusive entitled culture.
I don't know what is up with all the haters in this section but Angel and Buffy were the Shit. People talking about he was too old for her...Buffy always dated guys too old for her so please stop with that nonsense. I love Angel and Buffy...passion overload.
I find the parallel between the cultist leader and Angel interesting. Not trying to change your mind about shipping them, but the cultist is an older guy that doesn't want the best for Buffy. He charming, funny, and good looking. However Angel, yes good looking too, but also older than her. However He's awkward, doesn't know how to socialize as well and a recovering Blood drinker. He actually does wants what's best for her but can't help himself but want to be part of her life. The major differences obviously is the charmer is willing to sacrifice her for his happiness and Angel was willing to sacrifice his own happiness for her. Also my wife and I are enjoying going through this with you, this is one of our favorite shows and you are quickly becoming one of our favorite people to watch it with!
Yeah.....the Bangel romance has zero foundation. We were just TOLD these two people have an insta-connection and are in love/infatuated with each other, but we've never been SHOWN it. So it's....really hard to believe (unless you're like, 14yrs old, then it makes TOTAL sense lol 🙄)
Honestly I always thought that was the point, a lot of teenagers end up in relationships this way and it's not the smartest way to go about things but it is a part of growing up unfortunately. I'm fairly certain the creator didn't ship it either.
Apart from Seth Green the members of 'Dingoes ate my Baby' are a real band, 'Four Star Mary'. Most of the bands at the Bronze were real, but unsigned bands. What's happened to Xander? Usually he's even better than Cordy at insults and comebacks, but he is really weak in this episode. 19:40 It's so great when Willow loses her temper, it doesn't happen often, which just makes it so much better when it does.
ive never really shipped angel and buffy either. ive learned to appreciate their relationship a bit tho since ive rewatched buffy. the agressive thing tho, it never really mattered to because because shes stronger than him (not they they should be agressive with each other, but theyre pretty equal in every aspect).
I think this snake/penis monster isn't really relevant, I think it's more about this... Fraternity guy, I never remember his name 😅 he's the reptile boy, the monster. Watches this ep like 100 times and I still don't know if I like it😅
I don't care, if he's so much older because this is made up, they're both supernatural plus if he wasn't that age, there would be less to the/his story. I can't imagine what the story would be, if he was actually a teen lmao.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that never felt the Bangel vibes. The characters never had much chemistry for me, and Angel seemed so boring and one-dimensional at this point of the show .
Yep, at this point he's absolutely one dimensional. His entire existence on the show, every scene, every dialog, is about Buffy. His only motivation is: Buffy. Could not be more one-note

Canon says Sunnydale has 12 cemeteries. 12. One coffee shop, but 12 cemeteries. I hear people are dying to get in.
Xander: "Does every conversation have to come around to that freak?"

@@barbarabaker1457 Oh, Xander Angel buddy cop would be an amazing renewal idea for Buffy 😂
There's like a whole dozen cemeteries within Sunnydale's town limits so running into a cemetery is pretty much inevitable if you run long enough. 🤣
