It is established in an earlier episode (Lie to Me) that Angel knows Drusilla because he sired her (turned her into a vampire) and Spike also calls Angel his sire in School Hard, but he just means that he is in Angel's sire line. So that's why Spike and Dru know who Angel is. It is implied that after Angel got his soul, he kind ghosted all the vamps that he used to hang out with, so many of them might not know about his soul status.
Yeah, another popular option is that Spike doesn't necessarily think of Dru as his sire due to her insanity, so he learned everything from Angel kind of like being raised by grandparents if that is an appropriate analogy.
i don't know why people ignore the second half of spike's line in _lie to me_ : "you were my sire, man -- you were my yoda!" yoda, of course, is not actually luke skywalker's father, but he is a father figure. likewise, angel is a sire figure to spike, due to her insanity.
Stupid observation here, but I love how Angel wakes up naked and in agony, but when he sprints into the rain to scream in pain and despair, he's wearing clothes. I normally wouldn't draw attention to this - it's a 90s TV show, it's not going to show full frontal Boreanaz, and Surprise is an excellent episode, so nobody's going to care - but I can't help but imagine Angel speed-dressing while screaming for Buffy and groaning in pain.
I feel like there are about 5 episodes in this series that marked an elevation point. From that episode the series reached a consistently higher level from then on. this was one of those episodes to me.
To be fair, if Drusilla were to have been killed in the fire at the end of What's My Line Part II, you wouldn't have seen her body anyways. When vampires are killed, they turn to dust. There wouldn't have been a dead (not undead) body to see.
Dream sequences always played a big part in The Buffyverse. We could see Buffy's prophetic dreams re: harm coming to Angel. This episode Surprise, is where this show really starts to seriously pick up regarding the arc of the Season. We see Jenny being visited by her strange uncle looking for revenge. The excitement from Drusilla and Spike when The Judge comes back to life is great. Buffy on her birthday gets he Surprise party, Oz steals the show, and is just so laid back when Willow explains to him about everything. Without doubt the coolest character in The Buffyverse. The title Surprise is still coming to Buffy, we see her losing her virginity to Angel here, but see Angel in such pain in the rain at the end after what has happened. There is of course a reason for this. This is really a two-parter with E14 which is just exceptional, where all is revealed. From now on the show really does improve so much, you can just see it getting slicker and more polished.
Uh oh. THIS is the turning point of the show. Loved that you had to replay the scene where Jenny's uncle appears and we get to hear that whole breakdown about Angel's soul or moment of true happiness. I agree Jenny should've told them who she was from the start. Maybe Buffy wouldn't of "seized the day" with Angel if she was given a warning. At the start she did say she wanted to be one step ahead of knowing what Drusilla was up to. But that also let's us know she wants to be aware of other dangers as well. Can't wait for the next episode.
"I don't wanna get too high up here just to crash and burn." I mean, that's sorta what this show does, as I'm sure Future Darcie has already figured out by now! Just embrace the pain lol.
Ozs reaction to finding out vampires and things are real at the party is a great moment. Willow at this point really needed Oz. ya Jenny isn’t a technopagian she’s a gypsy from the tribe who gave Angel his soul. This episode was also in the movie the fault in our stars. The judge is played by the same actor as Luke the vampire from the pilot episodes.
SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE SERIES. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THROUGH THE SERIES FINALE The moment of the show I always remember in this situation is the end of _I Robot, You Jane,_ when Buffy, Xander, and Willow realize "none of them are going to have happy, normal relationships. It actually makes it easier to remember that the outcome of most relationships was spoiled at the end of that episode.
@@Shadowman4710 SPOILERS FOR SHOW AND COMICS That's why I said "most" relationships. In the vein of Xander/Dawn, she is legal when they get together, but I find it disturbing that he once babysat her and made "isn't it cute" type comments about her crush on him before acknowledging her _being hot_ in S7 (she was still underage at that point), along with Willow. So perhaps people could ague happy and normal, but like most relationships in the show and comics not necessarily healthy. In terms of healthy Giles/Olivia & Post S6 Buffy/Spike are the healthiest any end game romantic relationships get. Because even after Spuffy's breakup between S11 & S12 they remain friends and Giles/Olivia always remained in contact as friends while not dating and/or casually hooking up.
@@Buffy8Fan SPACE FOR THE sPOILERS Oh yeah, I know she's over 18. But damn, even he is so freaked out about a girl he watched grow up from childhood being the mother of his child that he has to lose his entire memory to be okay with it.
@@Shadowman4710 SAME SPOILERS AS ABOVE 😁 I never cared that he liked her romantically once she's 18. I just think there are too many moments of him treating her as a child when she is younger and noticing she is "growing up" _before she is legal_ to be comfortable with the idea of it as a viewer/reader.
The heat index is 107F today and seeing you in a hoodie is burning me up. (The other day it was 112F). Like, pretty sure one day at work I had heat exhaustion. I am going to guess this was filmed in March.
You being Cal’s #1 fan I will fight you on! Lol! I was shocked when they gave us this Cal twist! We still love Cal! And Rup! Jeez I get so excited for your new Buddy reactions! Can’t freaking wait for the next few episodes you put out! ❤️
I don't think it was ever said. But I've always thought Dru was the girl the Cal's uncle was talking about. Everything Unc says Angel did to the girl is the same things Angel did to Dru.
Angels curse/timeline explanation (spoiler free) 100ish years ago angelus killed a Romani ‘gypsy’ girl. Killed all her immediate family too. As punishment the extended clan cursed him by rebinding his soul. In buffyverse the soul is the source of one’s conscious so he is now damned to b burdened w the guilt of all he did during his initial vampiredom. The curse specifies that a single moment of true happiness will break the curse relieving him of his soul. It’s to b inferred that since then the Romani have been keeping an eye on him and sometime after being cursed he left the killing fields for good. Ghosted all his vamp buddies. In vampire society(?) angelus was like the most vicious dude so he’s well known. IMO dumb curse. Whose idea was it to make a curse that is broken by something as vague as true happiness and unleash like top 5 most infamous vampires?
yeah, if you really listen properly to that re-watched scene they do ruin the "surprise" don't they. luckily most just let it wash over them and forget all the details making for more of a shock in the next episode.
Finally Welcome to Buffy the Vampire Slayer There was nothing wrong with the show before, but fans tend to worry about how people will react, up until this point. That worrying on our part stops now. If you ever feel like it, I'd love to know what the others are (You can just give season and episode numbers to avoid spoilers). I feel the same way.

I've said elsewhere that this is where the show truly finds its identity, and comes into its own as one of the best series to ever hit television.

The episode with my favourite band’s music! Rasputina doing ‘Transylvania Concubine’ is a little on the nose, but it is a classic moment!
I think its something no one ever thinks about until its too late. But its a fairy tale standard that curses can end.
