"A man has a choice" - Sheriff "I don't believe he does" - Mal That's Mal in a nutshell. Wise? No. Smart? Not always. Faced with doing the right thing? Not even a choice.
I think the theme of _Firefly_ is: the contrast between frontier values and civilized values - frontier values are better. In this episode civilized values are represented by the captain of the Alliance cruiser 15:25 . He knows the theft of the medicine will result in deaths, but he can't be bothered to try to retrieve it just to save some unimportant miners and ranchers. Compare that with the frontier values represented by Mal, who returns the medicine even at the risk of being killed by Niska, and the sheriff who lets him go. Mal expresses his values 23:06 : "We're thieves (we will steal from the Alliance who occupies our planets) but we are not thieves (we will not steal medicine from ordinary folk who need it).
Plus he still gave back the money Niska paid him. Of course both Mal and Niska lost money overall, in terms of the expenses incurred during the whole thing. But sometimes that's just how it goes...
@@ernesthakey3396 That's right. He has a frontiersman's disrespect for governments and laws but keeps his word to others, including fellow crooks. This is also shown in the pilot episode when he completes the deal with Patience, even after she tried to kill him. "Honor among thieves"
In that regard, Firefly is a lot like the Conan stories - Civilisation is full of corruption and falsehoods, barbarians are (for most part) honourable and true.
@@StarlasAiko Absolutely, great example! By the way, I disagree with this point of view. I think living in a developed country with a modern government is far better than a frontier with ignorant, violent people.
@@seanmcmurphy4744 I don't think it's necessarily saying either one is 'right', it's showing the difference in perspective, it's just our viewpoint characters favour one way for very specific reasons. In the frontier, on the border of civilization, you have nothing but yourself and your honour - how you act and how you interact with people is the only thing that matters, because like Niska says here, it's all about reputation and how 'solid' yours is - the little details are what makes things happen. With the civilised core worlds, the government HAS to focus on the big picture to ensure that things actually work with billions (if not trillions) of people - that level of bureaucracy that only deals with the function of the civilised world machine makes amazing things and allows incredible technology to be used to create better worlds... but people on the edge, the 'small details', get lost in the cracks. The truth is, you NEED both for a society to truly function properly. Too far to either extreme and things go bad: Extreme 'civilised bureaucracy' and you get authoritarianism, government corruption, and loss of freedom for the individual Extreme 'frontier sovereignty' and there's no support network for people, might makes right, and things fall apart once a group becomes larger than maybe a hundred or so people. As for ignorant, violent people... you can find them anywhere, sadly. They can just do very different things depending on whether they're on the frontier or in the core.
Thanks so much Darcie. These reactions are even more fun than I could have imagined, and being in Australia, I usually get them first thing in the morning. You put me in such a great mood to start the day. Oh, and the purple hair is fire! ✌❤
Space buns. Adorable and appropriate. You definitely have caught the fun vibe of this show. It’s fun to watch you watch it. River keeps saying “Two by two, hands of blue.” Go back and look at those two guys at the end asking about her . . . Remember, I warned you about drinking while watching. One of these days you’re going to choke and/or spit because something hilarious happens just as you take a sip. 😅
OK, you got me. I enjoy your enthusiasm for the show and your not-so-pretentious attitude in delivering your reaction. If I were still a drinking man, I might just settle in and have a beer while kicking back and enjoying your commentary. Alas, I'm going to settle for some coffee or hot green tea and pretend like I'm having something with a bit more kick. Just do me one thing, let me know when you become a brown coat. I feel like you are well on your way. 😁
Love the space buns. Very Kaylee vibe. 😄 Also, this cracked me up: Sheriff: Funny you didn't know Joey Bloggs ate his own gun about eight months back. Darcie takes a long drink from her mug. Captain Mal: So... would his job be open? Darcie almost chokes trying not to laugh. 😆🤣 Heeeeeeeee. I knew that joke was coming and I was watching to see how you'd react. It was marvelous. 🌷
Yes, Miss Darcy. Drinking while Malcolm Reynolds is talking can be a bad idea. Or any one of the _Serenity_ crew for that matter, or the passengers. Take little sips, and be prepared to have it go the wrong way when a deadpan snarky line pops up out of the blue. "Would his job be available?"
Jayne is my favorite character in Firefly. I think Jayne is a fairly unique character in media. He is a villain who is forced to do good things as opposed to Mal who is a hero forced to do bad things. Scenes where Mal and Jayne actually agree are some the best in the show.
Jayne doesn't necessarily like "murder" - but he's okay with killing in a firefight. Murder: noun the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. "the stabbing murder of an off-Broadway producer"
Shoplifting isn't at the expense of big corporations, it's at the expense of their more honest customers. (Well, except when there's so much of it they're driven to close down stores.)
@JohnSmith-rm1poThe blame for what? I'm simply saying what the effects of shoplifting are. Do you think that big corporations altruistically choose to absorb the costs of shoplifting when they can pass them on to customers instead?
I think the issue for Mal is stealing from the corrupt Alliance is payback for conquering and occupying the Rim planets, but he draws the line at depriving ordinary folks of lifesaving medicine
@@Henrik_Holst It works fine if your competitors are all in the same boat, as other stores in the same area will be. Though I'm sure it is also a factor in the growth of online-only stores (Amazon, mostly).
@@AlexSwanson-rw7cv That is under the false assumption that all shops are hit equally which they aren't. Also these things are ofc studied and it turns out that the real problem is employee theft, which happens at a rate of 15 to 7 times as much as that of shop lifting.
You're pretty with the space buns, but those are more of a Star Wars thing. OH - by the way, you really shouldn't drink anything while watching this show else you might do a spit-take. So many little quips.
If you don't like Firefly? Things between us... Not so solid.

Loved the reaction.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
I'm glad you're enjoying this so much. It's such a brilliant show.
"The Train Job": Fox TV's "preferred pilot" where we meet psychotic crime boss Adelai Niska.
Not Callie, Kaylee! So close! 😊

Fox decided the pilot didn't have enough action and chose to start with this episode.

Follow the breadcrumbs..... 2 by 2 hands of blue
I cannot WAIT for you to watch Episode 6.

2 by 2 hands of blue. The two guys at the end of the episode were both wearing blue gloves.
Jayne isn't especially moral, but he does have things he will and will not do. You'll see what they are as we go along.
The network, FOX, thought the pilot was to long so they had a week to make this a pilot.
That Lamp is a Tiffany lamp. It's probably a reproduction as they are VERY expensive.
It's Kaylee, Darlin'. Short for Kaywinnet Lee.
If you're interested in completing the Whedonverse, you can follow Eliza Dushku (Faith) and Alan Tudyk (Wash) and Amy Acker (Fred) over to Dollhouse 😁

it's not really that simple, passing the cost on to your customers only works if you have no competition
