that wrist past is absolutely absurd
If I tried that my wrist would be in a cast.
He could do it lol. He was a great player
When I first saw that wrist pass... I was dumbfounded
@@ch.illmatic That shit is easy.
@@malvolio01 so is your comment
"New Orleans Jazz" just sounds so right. They need to give the name back.
Change the name to the Utah Rockies. So Jazz can move to New Orleans.
Hannibal burress ~ there’s nothing jazzy about Utah , it’s actually misdemeanour to own a saxophone there 😂
Yeah, and get rid of the GS warriors
@@ninjastar666lol nun but white folks out there 🤣😂
No it doesn’t
Red Auerbach loved Pete Maravich, that's the reason why he brought him to the Celtics in 1980, unfortunately Pete's knees had passed away at that time.
Red admired Pete's dedication and skills. And Pete admired how Red built the celts into a lasting power and treated his players well.
I love how on the wrist pass, Red's all like "YOU'LL DIE IF YOU TRY IT!" Classic.
Ha don’t try it! Great
Now I'm tempted to try it. I'll probably die.
Very helpful. "No pass is a good one unless you catch it". Sound advice.
These Red vids with Pete are Gold! I'm loving this. Shows a time when pros did these kinda things without it being a commercial!
Arguably the greatest professional basketball coach (Auerbach) with one of the greatest college/pro basketball players (Maravich) in one of the greatest college basketball arenas (Cole Field House at University of Maryland)...absolutely awesome. How great is this? Thanks for posting!!!
Red Auerbach had an apartment in DC and the Celtics had an office for him when he was down there. The Baltimore Bullets did play a few games a year at Cole and the crowds were better and that's why owner Abe Pollin moved his team to Landover, MD at the Capital Centre in 1973.
In today's NBA, this would get Red a $500,000 tampering fine.
Haha considering he would go to the Celtics 2 years later
@@housesports000 … correct! “Red” was an incredible Coach and GM.
And that's why the today's NBA sucks.
The fake wrist pack is sick... I've never seen anyone duplicate it.
I loved these "Red On Roundball" segments as a kid. I always learned something from them (usually that I couldn't do what they were talking about), but it was really fun to see the different players in a more relaxed setting talking about fundamentals. The game--in my humble, "old man" opinion-- has suffered because of the three-point shot and the "Euro-step," which is basically sanctioned traveling because it isn't done correctly--the way Jerry West and Oscar Robertson did it. The beauty of the game, playmaking, has really been taken over by power and long-range scoring.
Auerbach is such a good teacher ... dunno y but when he talks , I feel like it’s important so I listen
If only Pistol Pete had health on his side, but I notice his team piled on the minutes with him which finally led up to his body finally giving out halfway through that 1977-'78 season. Shows how much they truly relied on him to get them to be relevant as playoff contenders. Special basketball talent, regardless. Only wish he hadn't retired a year earlier than he should have or else he'd be looking at his first championship at the end of his career (1981 Celtics).
Makes me wonder what kind if games he would've had if the 3-point line had been fully integrated in the NBA upon the merger with the ABA? Guess we wouldn't be talking about Kobe's 81-point game nearly as much, heh...
;-)
Pistol missed the top basketball goal of his life by one year. But in his life after basketball, he was reborn. He died playing basketball in a pick-up game ... with a complete life.
I love the way these players, many of them legends, take their roles in these programs so seriously and professionally. Nobody is there to goof around or trying to be funny
They should do more vids like this with today’s players showcasing tricks
3:28 thats the pass that kobe always does. that just shows you he made most up most of the moves we see today
Pistol Pete was the best scorer in basketball history. Look at the all time NCAA basketball record books, his name is all over it, including most points scored. Legend.
wow that "wrist pass" is actually pretty neat
SImply the greatest passing form ever.
the ratio of like to dislike shows the quality of the content of this video. 1avardac, this is why I subscribed to your channel. Thank you for showing this .
Maravich was a B-ball genius!
I love watching Pistol Pete, Steph Curry, Larry Bird, and MJ.
the guy red is talking about at the end just happens to be Bob Cousy
@2:33 how the heck he do that lol rip pete
hulksmash1091 fake throw that shit and force push to the left
If ur watching in 2020 U Are good at everything
Nothing could be easier than that... then you get at 2:00 and things get scary.
Piero della Francesca actually it's not that hard, u should just *practice* that
Can you imagine LeBron or Curry taking the time to make an instructional film like this. I very much doubt they got paid. Not dissing on those two guys expressly, but on how things have changed since these more innocent times.
Saw Bird argue with Red saying it was up to his teammate to catch any pass he threw.
I grew up in that era and idolized Pistol. Supposedly his last words were, "I feel great!" I've made a vow to never say those words out loud. And since most heart attacks happen between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., I sleep until at least 11 a.m. every day to avoid any cardiac events.
Ima pass first PG and gd I just learned some new I can try in game 👀
You can learn a LOT from this guy.
Pistol Pete accurately described himself as a human basketball.
Nobody can argue that. He was indeed a human basketball.
If Pete Maravich had stayed in the NBA longer he would've been a hell of a three point shooter. But unfortunately, he left the league a year after the NBA adopted it. (1980) I think he would've led the league in three point shooting.
He didn't shoot a lot of 3's that final year, but didn't he have some kind of absurd 70% 3PFG or such of the ones he did take?
He has the highest 3 %
This is legendary
Pistol Pete’s passion for the game is infectious. You can tell basketball was everything to him growing up.
@prodiggy13 If Red Auerbach stopped a pickup game, I would
1.) Scream out of horror because the zombie apocalypse is upon us
2.) Calm down and let the master do his work
Stupid
Such an inspiring player.
You can tell red who knows basketball better than anybody really loves Pete Maverick he knows what a special talent he is he knows what a great player he is and knows if he would have had them on the Celtics he would have put Talent around him and Pete would have had multiple championships team averages a top-five player to ever play the game
The pure basic fundamentals of basketball!
I´m watching this vid for almost a hour now, and I still haven´t figured out how to do it
HAA! Red was about to have a stroke with that wrist pass! "Don't TRY IT!!" Just what a coach would say.
This is GOLD! Listen to this men...
2:30 wtf 😂
thats mike bibby's dad catching pistols passes
This is what we learned at Converse Basketball Camp back in the day 🏀 we got a free Larry Bird poster too, except Pete throws some passes no one is teaching
Great stuff. Thanks for posting.
rondo needs to try that wrist pass, i can see him pulling it off
Haha double face palm @ 2:05

With a duo like Bibby and Maravich, (and Truck Robinson to boot,) how the hell did the Jazz never make the playoffs in New Orleans?
They were well on their way to the playoffs in the 1977/78 season, but in January Pete injured his knee and all went downhill from there. They barely missed the postseason - just one win short. That was one of the main reasons for the relocation to Utah.
+Chris Greenaway Bibby was already in Philly when Truck got there
Would you consider Truck a really good PF?
It's the responsibility of the passer to complete the pass, if the receiver doesn't catch it, IT'S A BAD PASS. !
Love that last statement!!
2:36 LOL
Fundamentals. Pure and simple. Yeah it's great when you can do showboat moves, which there's nothing with doing, but far too many players simply don't have sound fundamentals. I'd rather a team risk being "boring" with fundamental basketball and win consistently, than have a team which puts on a show but gets their nuts handed to them on a skewer night after night.
Pistol Pete made it a point to put on a show and that's why people love him. And the show didn't get in the way of insane numbers, I think it improved them, but regular humans should not try this wizardry.
@@orange_cat I'll agree with that. There are talents who exist in an entirely different dimension from us mere mortals. Pistol Pete was one of them.
Rucker Park meet Pistol Pete Maravich
I saw Pete in those HORSE games at halftime on CBS, I wouldn't bet against him.
no 3 points at that time?
Look how excited Red gets.
tat deceptive pass is reli sth else
Pistol was a time traveler. Change my mind.
Here from the funky video lol
Yup.
DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a "Wrist Pass"!!!!!
lol henry bibby looks exactly like mike bibby
Henry (dad) and Mike (son)
Henry Bibby's thinking at 0:21: my son will be a corpse for the Knicks in 2012
Pistol was NO. Jazz

Pistol Pete the original magic man
More like the original Steph
RIP :(
And this is.... me eating parm flakes
@usnate1 lol thank you....2years later finally got a repley hahaha...
Red's favorite hobby was always to interupt people playing basketball to teach others.
That is what eventually why Boston fans and his own community turned their backs on him. Trust me I know, I'm Asian- Indian.
You silly dummies
yes pistol pete 4 and1

1000 moves
@therussiannerd Actually, he made 10 of 15.
And Henry Bibby was just as good of a player as Mike. He didn't play point guard though.
Henry was a solid backup, ok starter. But Mike was a star w/kings.
Henry should of played PG is whole career at his hight
like what?

Idk if Bibby is the whitest black person, or the blackest white person
Lmao he’s black. Just like klay Thompson, Jason Kidd, Deron Williams
I’m a millennial... in this generation of basketball it’s not that skillful to watch but damn in his era that’s so popular.
