Pete's dad Press was an assistant coach at NC State. He would drive down streets with his car door open while Pete dribbled a ball. Pete really worked on ball handling skills
Richard Currin But his dad also dictated what school he’d go to so he ended up at LSU and never got to play for a national championship because of the NCAA rules. He could’ve played for the likes of UCLA if he’d told his Dad “no”
The Pistol had supreme confidence in his ability. It was never in doubt. I practiced that throw over my shoulder and reverse layup until I mastered it after watching this back in the 70's? The Pistol was like Bird in a guard's body. To me, the Pistol was the best player to come out of the 70's. Better than, Gervin, Chenier, Clyde, Monroe, West, etc. I used to watch him play and at halftime go outside and practice his moves. I still remember those H-O-R-S-E games and mini coaching clinics at halftime. Great times! Still remember that the NBA had a drug/ cocaine problem back then too.
That's my guy Pistol Pete. So smooth with it. Way before J Kidd, Steve Nash, Jason Williams. He had smooth handles and dime passes. Rip Pete Maravich 🏀🙏🏿🙌🏿
To me, a competition like this is so much more interesting than a slam dunk contest. All of the dunks of today have been done over and over again already. Just my opinion.
Can remember when Bob played for the Buffalo Braves. Scored from anywhere within 25 feet and the announcer would always intone 'that's two, for McAdoo'. Glad he got a ring with the Lakers.
Pete’s been gone for along time. Sad life, and died at 40. Never reached his promise in the NBA. But I think he remains the greatest collegiate player of all time. And he was influential-gets huge respect from a lot of NBA greats who came after him.
those were fun to watch in the 1970's. the nba should bring those events back. i still miss p. maravich. a star that died too young.**** there were loads of great quality players back then.****
Dont get me wrong pete was a Pioneer but if you compare his dribbling highlights to the likes of kyrie, AI, Crawford he isnt as good at dribbling as they are.
@@BlackSensei2004 The only reason any player couldn't dribble like today's. Nba players was because of the defensive rules. In the 60s,70s,80s, close to 90s you couldn't face up an opponent and razzle dazzle him was because there was just to many hard hitting defensive rules you had to guide the ball left and right and face then up straight up. People automatically today would call a foul if you insert the 70s,80s, defensive rules even on a pick up game. But when it was just for show pistol was the best ball handler in the history of it's sport. In today's era offense dictates pace in the nba. Back then defense dictated pace and rhythm in the nba. Hand checking and actually pushing your offensive guy with your chest was consider amazing defense and it's true that's how defense was played.
McAdoo was a ridiculous choice for this kind of contest. He had zero trick shots in his repetoire. What he had was height, speed, unlimited range and one of the quickest releases in NBA history. What he would do is hit one 18 foot jumper after another like a machine until your big man was forced to come out to the perimeter to stop him. Then he would blow by you and dunk. That was it. No fancy shots at all.
Pete: Dribble with my left hand twice, jump up, pass the ball under my right leg and then behind my back, bounce it off the top of the head, bank it off the backboard. Mcadoo: Say what??? -- later -- Mcadoo: Free throw Pete: Huh????
McAdoo was a baller (3 straight scoring titles, an MVP, led the league in FG pct once, and in free throws once as well.) But getting up H-O on Maravich in Horse may be a bigger achievement.
These friendly H-O-R-S-E competitions back in the day made basketball fun to watch for their fans. TNT Studios with Shaq and company can probably do this today if they wanted to. I admired Pistol Pete and Bob McAdoo. Great basketball legends!
Pistol was college basketball's first ever "point a minute" player; scoring more points than minutes played while at LSU. His legendary shootout vs Dan Issell of Kentucky on national TV was incredible.
Check out "crazy shots Pete Maravich" on youtube and you will see what Pete could really do in Horse. You are wrong if you think Maravich isn't better than any Player today in terms of Passing and dribbling. In the limited videos available you will see Maravich throw passes that today's players still can't throw. and if one watches his college highlight films or ultimate highlights, Pete was as fast as anyone with the ball that I've ever seen. In the book Maravich. James Brown, the sportscaster, relates how he tried out for the Atlanta Hawks when Pete was there. Brown said that they would do suicide drills the full length of the court while dribbling a ball.and states that Pete would dribble two balls while doing the drill and still beat almost everyone.
Marovich was a flashy passer, but he wasn't a good passer. He was an absolute turnover machine. I can name 20 passers off the top of my head that I would take before Pete. As for his handles, I would agree that he's one of the GOAT. Allen Iverson is the only player that I might put ahead of him, but Curry and Irving aren't far behind.
A reporter just did a study on a bunch of old nba games recently just to see how many shots beyond what would have been beyond the 3 point line before there was a 3 and Bob MacAdoo in one came made 19 that would be beyond the 3 point line and PISTOL PETE made 16 that were beyond the 3 point line in one game
By the way ,horse and basketball are 2 different things. Just like some guy can't make the all-star team but can win the slam dunk or 3 point shooting contest.

My Grandfather was good friends with Press Maravich in Fairmont ,W.va.
I don't even like basketball, but Maravich was a monster. Amazing. RIP.
i respect these guys as 2 of the all time greats but this looks like me and my dad playing horse in the driveway
I don't wanna hear anymore about players being more skilled then than now...case closed
Anthony Alexander Pete was one guy besides him nba has had more skill than them
Lucas S Not every body in the nba can do what Pistol pete is doin u drunk asf
Anthony Alexander ur high
FaZe Glos most good dribblers can do what Pete did

Here is a gift from Pete for you guys.
Mcadoo was 1 of my favorite LAKERS
Jazzhawkus rrf
Not fair,Pistol was phenomenal.
McAdoo around 6-9/6-10 ... Maravich looks 6-7! Pistol the first really big NBA guard.
thats cool because he wasnt. He was 6 foot 5. And he wasnt really big, he was just slender
Osama Bin Laden Height is height and has nothing to do with his weight. Pistol was at least 6-6. Now go away ... "bin laden!"
Gumball LastRally Show me the evidence that he is 6 foot 6
Osama Bin Laden You're an idiot! Try and get a life!
Gumball LastRally Lmfao why the fuck are you so mad? All I asked for was evidence that hes 6 foot 6 as you claim.
Back when players played for the love of the game. Not for the love of themselves
Pete’s been gone for along time. Sad life, and died at 40. Never reached his promise in the NBA. But I think he remains the greatest collegiate player of all time. And he was influential-gets huge respect from a lot of NBA greats who came after him.
No one was better than alcindor in college,
@Jlm alcindor is considered the greatest college player alltime,
@Jlm that was wilt chamberlain ☝️😊
@Jlm Can you imagine what he would have done if they had the 3 point line when he was playing.
those were fun to watch in the 1970's. the nba should bring those events back. i still miss p. maravich. a star that died too young.**** there were loads of great quality players back then.****
Players today would of got crossed over by Pete if played today. No one has the handles and artistry Pete had.
Nope
Dont get me wrong pete was a Pioneer but if you compare his dribbling highlights to the likes of kyrie, AI, Crawford he isnt as good at dribbling as they are.
@@BlackSensei2004
The only reason any player couldn't dribble like today's.
From a time when there were still only 2 basketball players in the entire world and only 1 team gear.
What are you on about man?
Huh?
its shit now though, like just 3 pointers
This is honestly amazing, pistol had behind the back between the legs lays and filayyyys 30-40 years ago 😱😱 crazy man
Great player in greatest league in basketball game...
Greetengs from Belgrade - Serbia for all funs of basketball game!!!
Things were better, including announcers like Don Criqui heard here.
Pete Is the goat god give Pete a happy life and one more chance
I feel like there pants are way too high
The opening shot of the Pistol and Mcadoo side by side is one of the most 70s NBA images one could ever see.
The All Star captains should play HORSE for first pick in the draft selection
now athleticism 100 times what is use to be just 50 years passed. I could not even imaging what it could be in 200 the way it goes now.
Wrong dude , freaks back then were Normal !
Great game of horse...Pistol Pete was the best.
Growing up as a teen n the mid 70’s I truly have seen some great players n my time
Pete: Dribble with my left hand twice, jump up, pass the ball under my right leg and then behind my back, bounce it off the top of the head, bank it off the backboard.
Mcadoo: Say what???
-- later --
Mcadoo: Free throw
Pete: Huh????
T jass's dad?
Pete Maravich recarnated in T Jass
"I'm gonna do the whitest thing you've ever seen" -Pistol Pete every time
Check out "crazy shots Pete Maravich" on youtube and you will see what Pete could really do in Horse.
And he could shoot from way way out as well as anyone who ever played could.
Check out his old balhandling vids on RUclips... this dude had real game.
Did his ''quick draw'' drill the first time I tried..gotta have a quick brain and hands.
Michael Sanders he could score better
A reporter just did a study on a bunch of old nba games recently just to see how many shots beyond what would have been beyond the 3 point line before there was a 3 and Bob MacAdoo in one came made 19 that would be beyond the 3 point line and PISTOL PETE made 16 that were beyond the 3 point line in one game
By the way ,horse and basketball are 2 different things. Just like some guy can't make the all-star team but can win the slam dunk or 3 point shooting contest.
Dr J called Pistol Pete the most skilled basketball player that he's ever seen.
Can you imagine not knowing who Pete was? Meeting him on a court and saying "Lets play some horse?".... A few minutes later... Well dam...
Pete is the last guy you wanna play against when it comes to horse
I'd actually pay to play against him. I'd probably lose every time but maybe it would be close.
Pete was so Ahead of his time
Man. Pete was my favorite player. Wow that brought back some memorys. Two great players
^memories
I work as a caddie at a top 100 in America golf course. One of our members went to basketball camp with "pistol pete". He says it was the greatest experience of his life.
Maravich vs. Bird who wins?
David A. Bird.
That's a good one.... I'd LOVE to have seen that 1 on 1.
Bird
Ainge
David A. Bird Easily But Pete still a Legend
Pistol will always be my favorite player next to MJ. I was honored to go to Pistol Petes basketball camp in Clearwater FL where his son was a coach.
