    Watching Pistol Pete handle the ball is like poetry in motion. He's like the white version of one of the Harlem Globetrotters. Not only was his ball handling beyond words. But, his ability to pass or score was unbelievable. He could've played in this modern era scoring on even Lebron James. And, that's saying something.

      “He was unstoppable. It’s as if they had melted down all 12 Harlem Globetrotters and then filled up this skinny 6-6 white frame with everything they had.” -RALPH WILEY, SPORTSWRITER

      Oh, and the Globetrotters offered him a million dollar contract during Pete's senior year to play with them.

  • @jingqi9106
    @jingqi9106 3 года назад +46

    We can only imagine what Pete could have done if he had played with today's liberal ball handling "rules" but we do know that the Pistol was at least the greatest ball handler of his era if not the greatest ball handler ever.

    Was Magic Johnson inspired by Pistol Pete ?

    • @BasketballJones48021
      @BasketballJones48021  3 года назад +12

      Of course…
      "Pete was 'The Man.' I'd just sit there and shake my head and say to myself: 'How'd he do that?'
      Through following basketball and enjoying his flair for the game, I feel as though I knew him. He was a great scorer and a great passer at the same time. The passes he made were unbelievable. He was so ahead of his time."
      -Magic Johnson

    More Pete content, it's so hard to find the content of arguably the most skilled player of all time. I don't understand why the NBA won't open its vault and give us a proper Pistol Pete mix. To celebrate the 75th Anniversary Team we should get proper 20+ minute mixes of all the players on that list. But as far as Pete it's the same content. I don't understand why nobody has more robust footage of him considering at the time he set a record for being the highest-paid player, was a perennial all-star, and arguably the most exciting player of his era sans Dr.J, IMO. Pete was basically a Globetrotter but used his skills to the effect of averaging 44 ppg in college. Then they thought it was a fluke until he came into the NBA lighting it up to the tune of averaging 24 points, 5.4 dimes, and 4.2 boards per game for his career. Those are mirrors of Kobe's career numbers(25.0, 4.7, 5.2). That's how skilled he was in the '70s. He was basically the White Mamba only he never got a chance to play with an all-time great Center like Shaq. Imagine Pete playing with Kareem in the '70s in LA?

    It’s an overlooked skill in today’s basketball. So many people put emphasis on scoring. Ball handling skills with the NBA defense (lack of) in today’s game, Pistol would be a nightmare for the Lebron’s and Curry’s. One player can’t carry an entire team. Pistol would pass the ball off at any second to the other 4 guys out on the floor with him.
