So fun fact.. I suffered a brain injury from septicemia meningitis.. doctors wanted me on big pharma, meds.. I found a study from the Ukraine about treating sever mental illness by using creatine.. needless to say, I went that latter route.. I honestly never felt better and ended up recovering 100% and then some.... Just a thought for someone experiencing brain health illness.
I honestly can't remember the exact name. It was just a pure raw creatine, with no additives. A basic blue and white container. I'm sorry I'm not much help for your question.
After taking SSRI’s for more than 6 years, I began taking 5g of creatine daily. Along with regular exercise I was able to taper off the SSRI’s, thank goodness. The combination of creatine & exercise have transformed my life.
@@jaymorrison5895 I did it gradually over 6 weeks but I was only on 50mg. If you’re on a higher dose I suggest doing it over a longer period of time in gradual increments. You might have days where you have a little wobble but trust yourself. Wishing you lots of luck.
I had a severe concussion this year. For a month after I stuggled to exercise, even walk, although my body wasn’t injured besides my head. I had trouble concentrating or reading. I would get very dizzy while driving so I had to stop. I read about creatine for people with traumatic brain injury and started taking it. Within 24 hours all of those symptoms disappeared. I started exercising and driving again. It was very dramatic how quickly it worked.
I had 4 brain haemorrhages, after discharge from hospital i started taking creatine and collagen. Then found it may impact kidney. Then the sleeping disorders started , gone back to doctors, they put me on antidepressants. Then it was a disaster. Did some yoga mudras and started collagen and creatine, now feeling somewhat normal.

Creatine is the truth!!!!!! Oh my goodness,. I realized the effects of it unintentionally. I was simply taking it for strength benefits and realized my depression and anxiety/ my memory significantly improved. It was so weird! I had no clue what was happening or the reason for this improvement until I stopped taking it and my depression restarted and the light bulb went off! I’m happy it happened in this order because I know for a fact it works!
Its probably very individual like many things in suplementation are. I used to take creatine regularly for hypertrophy and didnt quite notice any mental benefits but later when I was off it, I re felt had more clarity and focus with regards to things like diet, discipline to sleep on time etc when on creatine.
I have taken creatine on occasion on and off for 30 years. I typically take 2 to 3 g a day. When I take it, I notice a cognitive and overall energy improvement.
I was misdiagnosed when I spoke with my doc about depression and anxiety! It was just not eating enough healthy foods and all the processed foods in the stores I was thinking it was healthy for me!! I just eat meat fish and vegetables and have completely stopped eating anything else!! Also pineapple everyday ! Fruits are good but I limit the amount of. I have so much clarity and have noticed a complete difference in my mood and energy levels!
Get your vitamin D checked, it's responsible for regulating your autonomic nervous system if it's low you'll likely be sympathetic dominant which is fight or flight. You want to be parasympathetic. Low vitamin D can also cause a host of other vitamin and mineral deficiencies that cannot be resolved until the levels of vitamin D are optimal
I tried everything, ketamine infusion , anti depressants ( a few types ) made me worse I started creatine & 3 days later , palpitations stop , crying spells stop , shivers stop .
Pretty much what happened. For almost 5 months I was going through hell gradually. Never had depression before in my life or anxiety etc . My life was perfect but after a retina detachment operation I started developing insomnia, almost 50 days with maximum 2-3 hours of sleep a day. Lose almost 10kg in the time. Tried everything acupuncture, medication, reiki etc . Nothing worked. Stopped eating gluten. When I started taking creatine at end of May , my palpitations & tremors subsided. I thought it was what a therapist told me, right about that time- she told me to stop taking the medication & start riding my motorcycle & have faith that I don’t have depression. It was everything opposite what everyone else told me. So I was told I was ok , maybe psychologically it helped & creatine replaced the medication & 2 weeks after that I went through a spiritual retreat to detox in Vellore / Chennai India . There it was confirmed that I didn’t have depression. Whilst trained doctors claimed I had depression, PTSD etc. it was weird but it been more than a year, I only had a very slight symptom for a day. But I kept telling myself Fuck off & went on with my life. I still sometimes shit in my pants thinking of how I should deal with this if it comes back again but I challenge it daily. Exercising & socialising & drinking with my friends & just not worrying a bit . I NEVER WANT TO EVER GO THROUGH THIS HELL AGAIN.
I have just recently started taking creatine to get to a higher training level. I'm 47 and already in good shape, I train regularly and eat healthy food daily (staying away from refined sugar and alcohol). After a week of taking 5g/day (no loading phase), I have noticed a change in my response towards certain tasks at work. I feel more focused and calm. I also have noticed a significant change/upgrade in my general humour and memory. I was only expecting muscular upgrade, so I'm glad for the extra benefits.
This video might be the most important video I’ve heard on RUclips in quite awhile ! I started two weeks ago with 2 grams a day and my anxiety has stopped ! Absolutely grateful to you and your guest ! It’s also helping me in the gym ….
I’ve taking creatine for over 30 years I’m 50 now and look at least 20 years younger then my real age ,I’d have to have a real rough night out to remotely look 50 so when you read about studies of it being used as an anti aging therapies for degenerative diseases I can conform it works ,I feel those who never took it long term missed the boat it definitely slows aging down ,don’t have a wrinkle on my either .
I've been taking creatine every work day for over a year, and I feel better. I feel better hydrated, I feel more awake, and I feel less stressed and depressed.
i'm a grill cook and work in crazy heat, after a morning at the gym, school, and freelance marketing/photography. I am typically miserable behind the massive grill there, and I pick up the slack because I want to leave that hell as soon as possible. I typically start to resent lazy coworkers and get pissed when anything gets in the way of me doing my job and going home. Now I am coasting through it with a smile on my face, helping out the knuckle draggers, chatting up the servers.. and not so bent on leaving on time. I am taking a few other supps, but Creatine is a game changer for sure.
I am appreciative this came into my video feed. I just had my right Knee replaced, I am sleep deprived, in pain constantly, and had quit creatine pre surgery, and I'm three weeks post surgery now, and I am in distress. So, I grabbed up my creatine, and dosed today, and will from now on daily. Thanks for this info
I used to take a lot of creatine. Especially when I was really working out. I was hit with depression and anxiety in late 2021 as I stopped taking creatine and was not working out as much !
I take it semi regularly. Especially if I slept poorly or stayed up too late. It helps keep me with it. Not an everyday remedy for bad sleep though, just the one offs.
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s four years ago. I started doing my own research and began taking supplements with creatine being among them. I had just retired and thought that the calmness that I had begun to feel was due to no longer working but the creatine and L-Theanine just might be the reason
@@Keithzzzzt I took 100mg sublingualy for 8 weeks which resolved the neuropathy in my right ankle and foot. I then broke out in a rash across my stomach so I backed off to one every couple of weeks. Which seems to be working for me
Correlation/Causation ... you gotta separate out three things: 1) meds, 2) Creatine, 3) exercise ... if the reason someone starts using Creatine is because they are beginning a weight training/body building regimen, then that itself could be the reason for the decrease in anxiety, not the Creatine. That being said, I would not be surprised if Creatine helped. I'm a big believer in ARGININE myself.
Exercise being the main contributor is my assumption as well. I do feel more relaxed afterwards, and usually it'll set the tone for my day. We already have studies that suggest that exercising increases higher levels of dopamine, and plenty of people who report a that their quality of life is better with exercising.

My autistic daughter has had only a single meltdown in a year and a half since we started giving her creatine. The one meltdown she had was after two days of being lax with supplementation. Before supplementation she was having two or three meltdowns a day... However, when you mentioned that it's a slow process for creatine supplementation to effect cognition, and that it can't be used as a "nootropic," that is definitely NOT our experience. When we started supplementation it only took a minute or two for the creatine to effect her behavior. We could also tell when she had a hard day at school and gave her "extra" in the evening to replenish her supplies. When we know she is going to have an extra stressful day (when she will be forced to socialize with a large number of people, for example) we give her extra beforehand and have absolutely seen cognitive improvements with supplementation vs without on an acute basis.
It's blinded by necessity; she won't touch her drink if she knows we mixed something into it. When we started giving it to her it was an accidental double-blind test. My wife added it to her morning milk without telling me about it. That morning was the first time in her life that I didn't have to take her out of Sunday Mass. When I asked my wife if she had done something different she replied that she had finally remembered to add the creatine.
@@indierabbit13 Possibly. But I've not had good luck finding a doctor who gives a damn about diet in relation to autism. I've had to figure it all out on my own.
I had a concussion recently. I highly recommend creatinine to recover!! Also recommend Malama Mushrooms “brain gains” instead of coffee to help with focus. For better sleep magnesium threonate or malama mushrooms “chill bruh” does the trick. And most importantly aerobic exercise a simple walk boosts brain functioning.
Here are the key takeaways from the discussion with Dr. Darren Candow on the potential effects of creatine on mood disorders and brain health: 1. **Emerging Research on Mood Disorders**: - Creatine supplementation is being explored for its potential to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. - These mood disorders may reduce brain creatine stores, which are crucial for brain bioenergetics. 2. **Mechanism of Action**: - Creatine helps reduce oxidative stress and improves mitochondrial health in the brain. - This process could translate into better cognitive function and mood stabilization. 3. **Current Evidence and Studies**: - Most studies have involved participants who are also on medication for mood disorders. - There is promising evidence from rodent models, but human studies are still emerging. 4. **Dietary Impact**: - While vegans and vegetarians have lower muscle creatine levels, their brain creatine levels remain similar to those of omnivores. - The brain can produce its own creatine, independently of dietary intake. 5. **Dosage Recommendations**: - Higher doses of creatine (around 10 grams daily) over extended periods (weeks to months) are recommended to see significant benefits in brain health. - Lower doses might benefit muscle creatine levels but are less likely to impact brain creatine stores significantly. 6. **Anti-Inflammatory Effects**: - Creatine may reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, linking muscle, bone, and brain health. 7. **Sleep Deprivation and Cognitive Performance**: - Creatine seems to benefit cognitive performance more than physical performance under sleep-deprived conditions. - It helps mitigate the cognitive decline associated with sleep deprivation. 8. **Creatine Synthesis in the Body**: - The body produces creatine through a process involving the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine. - This synthesis occurs in the brain similarly to how it happens in the liver and kidneys. 9. **Use as a Nootropic**: - Creatine is not effective as an acute nootropic for immediate cognitive boosts. - It should be taken consistently over time for cumulative benefits. 10. **Overall Health Benefits**: - Creatine is not just an ergogenic aid for physical performance but also offers recovery and overall health benefits. - Its benefits extend across various age groups, from children to older adults. 11. **Practical Application**: - For those considering creatine supplementation, a whole-body perspective is recommended, with patience for long-term results in brain health.
I have been taking creatine regularly for many months now, but this inspired me to up my dosage. Creatine has been a real gamechanger for me and this additional information as to why is gold. Thank you!
I am positive for the MTHFR gene and COMT. As a result I am always very low in dopamine. Anything that elevates serotonin kills my sex drive, because I am serotonin dominant. I've found creatine brings my libido above normal baseline better than DLPA, Tyrosine or B6 alone. Much better, in fact. I always feel great on creatine.
Been a long term creatine user for over 35 years now. It’s the one supplement I’ve used consistently throughout my life more than any other aside from maybe whey protein. I take 5g religiously everyday although I’ll cycle off for about 30 days every few months but will have to up my dose to 10g.
A 2 lb steak only has about 5 grams of creatine. A loading dose of creatine is up to 20 grams per day for 7 days with 2-10 grams daily for long term maintenance. That’s 8 lbs of steak per day for loading and 4 lbs per day for maintenance. Or 4 teaspoons creatine monohydrate loading, 2 teaspoons maintenance.
Ha. I love good grass-fed beef. I can't imagine eating 8lbs then 4lbs/day, much less afford it. It reminds me of the Simpson's with Homer eating the giant steak.

@@tpoeatvon I agree with you I was taking creatine for lifting and my doctor could detect it in my blood indicating kidney failure. I stopped to get retested and it wasn't kidney failure it was just the high levels of creatinine in my blood. I was only on 1-2grams a day and that was well enough to saturate my body to give a false reading of kidney failure. I am not a doctor but 10g a day would seem like alot to me for a daily continued dose.
I had undiagnosed ADHD and suffered terrible depression as a result of underachieving my whole life. I had my blood works done and had very good creatine saturation. I took creatine supplements anyway to see if it helped but it did not. Taking ADHD meds has been a game changer for me.
Even if you`re not injured or sick, taking creatine is just awesome, 2-3 weeks and you`ll have more energy and feel quicker, maybe it a little bloated (very individual), but for me that passes in a short while. I`m actually OUT of creatine right now, AND protein, AND PWO, rough month :/ Still have coffee though, ☕😁 gotta value the little things 😇
I take powerful anti-seizure medications and opioids for pain. I started creatine for fitness usage and it totally lifted the brutal brain fog from the medications. I also take collagen which is rich in glycine. I wonder if the combo makes a big difference?
For pain I use a lot of ginger and turmeric in my tea. Both are anti-inflammatory. It's what I used for my knees as I couldn't tie my shoes and needed orthopedic knee braces. I can exercise again and fully functioning, no braces. Doing squats and kettle bell work outs now. Best anti-inflammatory is Noni juice, about 2 tbs a day. Used it for my friends pancreatitis, couldn't produce insulin because of it. After a few days on the juice he was fine, Alive to this day and started the juice 9 years ago. Give those a try and good luck.
This is slightly off topic but worth mentioning I have arthritis in my hips and shoulders it was affecting my sleep and every day life. I started taking Collagen after 3 months my pain was almost gone and now 9 months later no pain.
only took 50+ years to figure out something we knew. Still thing lions main and walking 3-4 times in nature will relieve most of anxiety and depression.
Started creatine after watching this video. taking one gram a day to start and my mind has been calm and focused. im hoping this also translates into the gym for more endurance and strenght. will increase dose as needed. its definitely effective for anxiousness. appreciate this video !!! 65 and going strong
I have been seeing people say 10 grams everywhere for ages and I have just scoffed at how it seems excessive lol Understanding more how creatine is produced in the brain and the blood brain barrier prevents uptake, it makes a lot more sense that dosing high enough so that your body is no longer using up arginine and glycine, allowing it to stay in the blood and be used in the brain. I will be increasing as well.
On another video about creatine, several people in the comments were talking about their side effects fro using creatine, like oedema, gallbladderstones, etc. But also someone said that it's the mono hydrate type that can cause that, and so it's best use the hcl form instead, as it absorbs better..
Thanks for letting us know. Often time I impulsively jump to try supposedly harmless recommended stuff by fitness channels but I've had gall bladder issues in the past so I'll be skipping on the whole 10g creatine per day thing for now.
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.

I hate doing quick calculations it used to give me a headache thinking of doing it that no longer have that and can concentrate better. I sleep and wake better I'm a Baker so I get up early and I wake up faster everyone should try it it has completely changed my life.
So glycine is required for the 3 step process to produce creatine. Glyphosate is a glycine molecule and as such it substitutes for the real amino acid glycine and makes the subseqent protien ineffective . See Stephanie Senef's extensive work on glyphosate . Thus a non organic plant based diet especially, would significanyly compromise creatine proxuction.
I’ve only been taking 3-5 grams a day for a month and I feel it right away after drinking. Within 5 minutes I have more energy. I would take more but it dries my stool and makes it harder to poop.
I use creatine to combat the effects of Long Covid. Fatigue, dizziness etc. Allows me to be more physically and mentally active, allows me to reduce the likelihood of crashes and if they do occur - their severity. I take 3.4g per day. When I need an extra boost I take 6.8g per day for 3 - 5 days. In my experience, the more creatine I take, the more my brain and body works. Its worth trying....
I am having the same experience on Long Covid. I upped VitC, VitD (very low stores in the body with LC despite 4000 iU per day) and started taking Creatine. I suddenly improved after 4 years of LC. I am cautiously optimistic for the first time. Still scared of crashing again.

Creatine definitely helps prevent injuries and makes bones stronger I’m 50 now and still lift like I’m in my 20”s in fact I’m stronger now and have been using Creatine since 1991 .
Early in the conversation you guys mentioned Creatine Phosphate. I remember around 1995 when Creatine supplements first came on the Market my first Creatine I bought was Creatine Phosphate, not monohydrate. This Creatine Phosphate was amazing in it results, far superior the the Creatine Monohydrate that was put out later. It also made me feel amazing! Why can't I find the pure Phosphate form of Creatine today! Why isn't it still available? Was it banned?
I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. I’ve heard creatine can help with autoimmune but on the flip side I’ve heard it can also cause hair loss. I would say the Holy Trinity for mental health is Exercise, Nutrition and Meditation. I´ve been working out at the gym for the past 20 years, on and off (due to injuries) and it sure helps to manage depression and anxiety. However I started taking creatine (combined with matcha powder and BCAAs) a while back and whenever I take this as a pre workout I feel I have physical and mental strength to train for hours! Recovery is so much better as well!
Thank you for this great interview! N of 1 example here, but I began taking Creatine for training benefits a few years ago. I noticed it had a subtle mitigating effect on my depressive symptoms, especially when I had poor sleep due to insomnia or graduate school. Similar to the mood-buffering effects when I’m on my standard ketogenic diet. I also noticed that the loading 10 mg dose seemed to occasionally trigger very minor gout flareups - still researching what that mechanism is. So I’ve tried to keep myself around 2.5 mg Creatine (half scoop) most days, sometimes 5 mg when I train hard, and that seems to be sweet spot for me.
So when I was younger and lifting weights a lot, I took creatine but was told I was supposed to cycle it because if I kept supplementing with it my body’s natural production would decline. This was the 1990s so I don’t know if this is valid, and a Google search of this question has mixed results.
I have a hearty red meat diet so perhaps the effect of supplementing creatine was muted, but in my experience, creatine's effects are significantly smaller than any prescribed stimulant I've taken as well as any SSRI or SNRI.
Yeah, very few people notoce anything at all from it. I was hoping that with chronic use, I'd at least notice a better ability with my lifts at the gym but truth be told, since I've stopped taking it completely (now 100% natural), I am basically the strongest I've ever been
I used to get shivers down my spine. Went to the spine doc and got some exercises but also went keto around the same time. I think that contributed greatly to me rapidly getting rid of the spasms to a great extent. Also, my skin improved I feel like but looking around online, that's not a universal experience about skin and keto.
Thank you Thomas, as always. Is there a particular brand that you recommend, or are most creatine products sourced from the same manufacturer (just slapping a different label on it)? And is creatine monohydrate supreme to the other types that are more pricey?
Is there any information on vertigo as a side effect when dosing 10+ grams a day. I just started taking creatine about 2 weeks ago and when I take around 10 or more grams in a day, I experience fairly significant vertigo. What is going on with that? @@Kylbigel I think that is what it was. I ended up lowering my intake and then just slow-loading over a few weeks. Worked for me much better that way. No vertigo that way.
This is incredible........now, how we do we reverse the insomnia that always accompanies it? Like, 10 grams sounds like an awesome way to kickstart all that sleep deprivation you guys discussed. I've come across hundreds of complaints about creatine causing insomnia.
when i tried starting creatine supplements, i could not sleep. wide awake almost the entire night for days until associated with starting creatine. i stopped taking it and in a few days my sleep went back to normal.
The main problems I have with creatine is it interferes with sleep because I wake up to pee more often, and it also makes my face look puffy/fat despite having low body fat. If anyone knows how to get around these issues please let me know.
Hey Thomas, like the videos. You should try running the audio through Audiophonic to get rid of that background echo. It's distracting and super easy to remove so subconsciously people are able to pay more attention. Keep up the good work!
It would be interesting if they studied if dementia patience also had low Creatine levels in the brain and what was their dietary habits before they were diagnosed with the condition. Did they eat heavily processed foods, lead vegan or vegetarian life styles or maybe lacked other types of amino acids that is required by the body/brain to make Creatine?
It doesn't matter friend. It will build up in your muscles, 5g a day is enough for muscle benefit but if you want the brain stuff do a loading phase of 20g a day and then drop to 10g but 5g daily is usually plenty. It doesn't even matter missing days, just take more on the other days. You basically can't od on it and apparently it helps absolutely everything
Creatine may help offset symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improve memory and cognition, especially in older adults and when the brain is stressed. Longer-term, higher-dose supplementation (10-20 grams daily) may be required for brain benefits. Key moments: 00:00 Creatine supplementation shows promise in potentially offsetting symptoms of depression and anxiety, with evidence suggesting it may improve brain bioenergetics and mitochondrial health, though further human studies are needed for conclusive results. -Creatine's impact on mood disorders like depression and anxiety, and its potential to replenish brain creatine stores, is a growing area of research. -The cognitive benefits of creatine, particularly in older adults under stress conditions, show improvements in memory and recall, with the brain relying on the creatine phosphate system for tasks. -Creatine's role in brain bioenergetics involves reducing oxidative stress and enhancing mitochondrial health, potentially leading to improved brain function and performance. 05:03 Creatine supplementation has shown to elevate brain creatine stores, potentially benefiting individuals with depression, anxiety, or neurological conditions. The brain's unique ability to create its own creatine may require higher dosages for therapeutic effects. -Differences in creatine storage between muscle and brain tissues, impacting dosage requirements and effectiveness of creatine supplementation. -Potential cognitive and therapeutic benefits of creatine supplementation across different age groups, including children, adolescents, and young adults, with positive effects on brain function and concussion risk. -The role of creatine in reducing inflammation in the body, including neuroinflammation, and its potential impact on brain bioenergetics and overall health. 10:06 Creatine may not show significant effects on the brain unless in a sleep-deprived state, where it reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, benefiting cognitive function. Dosing strategies for the brain suggest 10-20 grams daily for several weeks to see positive effects. -Creatine's potential to enhance muscle performance during exercise, especially in sleep-deprived individuals, is noted, but its primary benefits seem to be cognitive and memory-related. -The importance of higher dosages of creatine for brain health due to limited uptake by the brain compared to muscles, emphasizing the need for longer durations of supplementation. -Discussion on creatine production in the brain, similar to the liver and kidney processes, involving amino acids like Arginine and Glycine to form creatine, highlighting the brain's unique ability in this process. 15:09 Creatine, naturally produced in the brain, varies among individuals and accumulates slower in the brain than in muscles. It does not provide an immediate cognitive boost but requires patience for significant brain results. -Variability of creatine production in the brain compared to kidneys and liver, affecting cognitive function and accumulation rate. -Misconception of using creatine as a nootropic for instant cognitive enhancement, emphasizing the need for patience and long-term perspective. -Difference in time for creatine to show significant results in the brain compared to muscles, highlighting the importance of understanding the process for optimal outcomes. I have a modest college education in veterinary science, and I am very passionate about horse health and nutrition, but this subject has opened some questions as I help my adult daughter who has some health issues that I have been considering using creatine for. Here is my question. If creatine is formed from argenine, glycine, and methionine, then humans would definitely have to make sure they have enough lysine, threonine and leucine, before an over the counter product called creatine would be as effective as it could be? The reason being, that lysine is the first limiting amino acid in the human. Then threonine and leucine. If an individual doesn’t have enough of the more limiting amino acids, then utilization of creatine would not be as helpful. If the limiting amino acids are being taken in, and the argenine, glycine and methionine are being added, the body can make its own creatine. I wonder which would be most beneficial, and less expensive; taking all the proper aminos in the proper proportions, or taking just the creatine supplement?
I tolerate only 500mg creatine /day. It effects extreamly negativly on sleep. I sleep only 4-5 h/night if I take any creatine early in the morning like 5.30am. I love the effect on it during the day, it really uplifts the mood and gives muscle strength but sleep becomes so poor. I have a long histrory of chronic stress, burn outs and some years on plant based diet. I wish I could increase the intake of creatine but I just don't fall a sleep in the evening. I take tryptophan and GABA to fall a sleep if I take any creatine in the morning. Does the body get use to it sometime? Been taking it for about 4-6 months now. I eat approx. 300g red meat/day. I can't do white meat more than 1-2 days in row.

Can you do blood tests to see if the levels are low?
Placebo? Did she know that you gave it to her or something? Like is she realizing that you 'medicate' her?
It's blinded by necessity; she won't touch her drink if she knows we mixed something into it.
When we started giving it to her it was an accidental double-blind test. My wife added it to her morning milk without telling me about it. That morning was the first time in her life that I didn't have to take her out of Sunday Mass. When I asked my wife if she had done something different she replied that she had finally remembered to add the creatine.

Darren Candow on the potential effects of creatine on mood disorders and brain health:
1. **Emerging Research on Mood Disorders**:
- Creatine supplementation is being explored for its potential to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
- These mood disorders may reduce brain creatine stores, which are crucial for brain bioenergetics.
2. **Mechanism of Action**:
- Creatine helps reduce oxidative stress and improves mitochondrial health in the brain.
- This process could translate into better cognitive function and mood stabilization.
3. **Current Evidence and Studies**:
- Most studies have involved participants who are also on medication for mood disorders.
- There is promising evidence from rodent models, but human studies are still emerging.
4. **Dietary Impact**:
- While vegans and vegetarians have lower muscle creatine levels, their brain creatine levels remain similar to those of omnivores.
- The brain can produce its own creatine, independently of dietary intake.
5. **Dosage Recommendations**:
- Higher doses of creatine (around 10 grams daily) over extended periods (weeks to months) are recommended to see significant benefits in brain health.
- Lower doses might benefit muscle creatine levels but are less likely to impact brain creatine stores significantly.
6. **Anti-Inflammatory Effects**:
- Creatine may reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, linking muscle, bone, and brain health.
7. **Sleep Deprivation and Cognitive Performance**:
- Creatine seems to benefit cognitive performance more than physical performance under sleep-deprived conditions.
- It helps mitigate the cognitive decline associated with sleep deprivation.
8. **Creatine Synthesis in the Body**:
- The body produces creatine through a process involving the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine.
- This synthesis occurs in the brain similarly to how it happens in the liver and kidneys.
9. **Use as a Nootropic**:
- Creatine is not effective as an acute nootropic for immediate cognitive boosts.
- It should be taken consistently over time for cumulative benefits.
10. **Overall Health Benefits**:
- Creatine is not just an ergogenic aid for physical performance but also offers recovery and overall health benefits.
- Its benefits extend across various age groups, from children to older adults.
11. **Practical Application**:
- For those considering creatine supplementation, a whole-body perspective is recommended, with patience for long-term results in brain health.
Thanks!

It's great for memory friend it said....errrr, something or other
Sources, please. I've had a positive experience, but I am not in the average healthy person status.
It’s amazing to me that you can go to the doctors and they can prescribe you all sorts of big Pharma pharmaceuticals, but start asking questions about creatine, supplementation, collagen, beef liver, and it’s like they’ve gone stupid! Have nothing to offer on Ross roots and dairy organic free range meats, eliminating refined sugars and seed oil raw dairy kefir, and the list goes on 🤫 for me creatinine has the opposite affect and makes me tired and anxious.
Being a 68 year old Carnivore, I consume only Fatty Beef, Fatty Lamb, salt and water but do omega 3's, creatine, D3,K2 regularly. Keeping it simple.
what about Glynac.Good results for older adults
Same here. Lion diet, creatine. Hyperbolic tapering off psych drugs.
You might want to add some heart and liver to that for adequate amounts of important nutrients like taurine, copper, magnesium and Vitamin A etc.
D3 is rat poison google it. Unbelievable how brainwashed people are.

This was a really fascinating discussion thanks
I like creatine but I was a little afraid that taking it would reduce the body’s ability to produce it. Any studies on that?
So when I was younger and lifting weights a lot, I took creatine but was told I was supposed to cycle it because if I kept supplementing with it my body’s natural production would decline. This was the 1990s so I don’t know if this is valid, and a Google search of this question has mixed results.
I grew up near London, Ontario in Canada. I hear a strong accent from Dr. Candow and none from Thomas. I find that interesting.
Accent sounds like Ilderton or possible Birr😉
Funny I thought something similar - I related it to down east a bit.
Very interesting, thank you very much
I have a hearty red meat diet so perhaps the effect of supplementing creatine was muted, but in my experience, creatine's effects are significantly smaller than any prescribed stimulant I've taken as well as any SSRI or SNRI.
Yeah, very few people notoce anything at all from it. I was hoping that with chronic use, I'd at least notice a better ability with my lifts at the gym but truth be told, since I've stopped taking it completely (now 100% natural), I am basically the strongest I've ever been
I see John Malkovich on the thumbnail, I click.
I wonder if it could help me get off long term SSRI antidepressants
I would take 5HTP instead of SSRIs. Just don't take both at the same time.
@@LagMasterSam been on the SSRIs for over 20 years and can’t get off them even though I never wanted to go on antidepressants in the first place
If you have these problems and you're on the sugar wagon that's the first thing you need to address.
And cut the alcohol.
yes, cutting sugar is the #1 best thing for health
I used to get shivers down my spine. Went to the spine doc and got some exercises but also went keto around the same time. I think that contributed greatly to me rapidly getting rid of the spasms to a great extent. Also, my skin improved I feel like but looking around online, that's not a universal experience about skin and keto.
I fully agree and this is a huge problem worldwide
Creatine caused me to have kidney pain. And yes I did drink plenty of water
It also increases creatinine levels (or gives a false reading). I can't remember which. But it definitely seems to affect the kidney.
Thank you Thomas, as always. Is there a particular brand that you recommend, or are most creatine products sourced from the same manufacturer (just slapping a different label on it)?
And is creatine monohydrate supreme to the other types that are more pricey?
Best is any brand that is 'crea-pure'
Yes, look for Creapure, it's manufactured in Germany.
Is there any information on vertigo as a side effect when dosing 10+ grams a day. I just started taking creatine about 2 weeks ago and when I take around 10 or more grams in a day, I experience fairly significant vertigo. What is going on with that? Only thing I have found is a reddit forum where a few other people said they experienced the same thing.
Stop taking it and see of it improves. If not then its bot creatine. If it does then it is
Dehydration, as creatine causes the muscles to uptake way more water, you may need to hydrate a little more if taking upwards of 5g-10g
Too much water retention. Your middle ear is not adjusting well to that much fluid.
A heavy hitting Indica will clear that insomnia up really quick 😎
People are SO misinformed. Creatine IS natural, IS NOT going to affect sleep or hormones or hair loss.

Excellent and practical questions TdL
Which creatine is best? Mono hydrate or HCI ?
try both and see. some people are allergic to one or other
Check out PR supps Creatine..
Mono
@@yourenotwrong3511 I bought a creatine called bucked up and the label showed they have a few different creatines mixed in
My stomach prefers HCI
when i tried starting creatine supplements, i could not sleep. wide awake almost the entire night for days until associated with starting creatine. i stopped taking it and in a few days my sleep went back to normal.
Take it in the morning and exercise.
Creatine does seem to give some people insomnia. For me it's the opposite. I sleep much better while taking creatine.
The main problems I have with creatine is it interferes with sleep because I wake up to pee more often, and it also makes my face look puffy/fat despite having low body fat. If anyone knows how to get around these issues please let me know.
People using a ssri to treat depression and taking creatine is that safe?
Awesome video, thank you.
So when is the optimal time to take creatine?
Every day at the time you’ll actually take it. 5mg a day. (One scoop)
@@seanknox7321i think you meant 5g, not 5mg
@@seanknox7321 5 mg???
5 grams.. not milligrams
Key moments:
00:00 Creatine supplementation shows promise in potentially offsetting symptoms of depression and anxiety, with evidence suggesting it may improve brain bioenergetics and mitochondrial health, though further human studies are needed for conclusive results.

Any recommendations on what creatine to take?
Also keep in mind, "includes paid promotion"
Will this effect my synthroid medication?
Thank you fellows and may the Lord our God bless you all in Christ I pray 🙏✝️👍💖✌️ AMEN
Creatine never worked for my depression. Nobody ever suspects or questions the industries pushing these "alternatives".
Do you sleep 7+ hours, never eat junk food, and exercise everyday?
Thank you for posting this. I was considering taking this, but my primary concern was sleep disruption.
@@LilithCain You're welcome ! I've also taken vitamin Bs and that can also effect sleep nagtivly. I didn't take them yesterday and I slept better last night so I'm observing what's happening. I really would like to take higher doses of creatine but I need to exclude the vit B first to see what works and how. Sugar is also very bad for sleep. Can tolerate a very small amount of coffee. Very sensitive to all stimulants.Creatine feels so good for the brain, focus, uplifting, energy, I accomplish so much more effortlessly everything but 10g/day sounds unbelievably high dose. I took about 1g today so lets see how the night goes.
@artelina I don't eat any sugar at all, but I find that Bs dramatically help my sleep. It shuts down all the brain chatter . I take 3 GRAMS of niacin for my anxiety daily as well as a dropper full of B1 and D3 right at bedtime . If I wake up for any reason, I repeat the drops and go right back to sleep. 😊
@artelina for focus I'm really liking aswaganda and methylene blue, no sleep interactions whatsoever
I also have history off chronic stress,i have recently started watching Andrew huberman and Thomas,i am experimentng with some of the supplements, this week i started taking 3gm creatine monohydrate on first day result was good, but from second day it upset my stomach badly nd i was too much in my mind and then i have to calm my mind with streching, now i reduced the dosage to 1gm,now i am fine,i will try it early in the morning.
Is whey protein okay as an alternate? Or does it have to be creatine?
They are two completely different things. Neither one is a substitute for the other.
