Indeed it means you can drown in lava - lol. No seriously real lava is more likely to see you burning on top of it then you slinking any serous amount in to it. Lava is thick and even the though sometimes it looks fluid we are in more similar to water in density as opposed to rock - now if you are a creature that a denser stuff like any construct or warforged *then* maybe you are sinking.
I wish the Pyromancer had an extended spell list like the Tasha's subclasses (aberrant mind, clockwork soul). I feel like all the other sorcerer subclasses should also be reworked to have an expanded spell list or they just fall way behind the new ones honestly.
This is what I did for my Pyromancer, came up with a thematic extended spell list (Including some fire spells sorcerers don't normally have access too) and the ability to one for one cast the spells with sorcery points. Super fun to play and I don't feel as limited as I've felt with past sorcerers
Quite literally Tasha's provided a fix for a massive mistake Wizards made when designing the Sorcerer class. They are presented as "new subclass options" when in reality they completely invalidate the old ones. Every single subclass of the Sorcerer needs an extended spell list that they can mix and match up to 5th level spells.
@@MeepOfFaith I suspect that with whatever errata comes out in 2024, they'll be fixing that. A recent UA had a Lunar sorcerer with an expanded spell list, so it looks like WotC is taking notice.
As with ALL sorcerers, there really should be an extended spell list automatically granted by the subclass as spell known. Here that means a free Firebolt cantrip (which would allow to pick one more utility cantrip to help the RP side) by default and at least a free Burning Hands / Scorching Ray & Fireball known automatically (at the appropriate character levels) to have your base fire damage spells sorted, leaving you to also be able to pick different spells when you level up. And I agree with the comment about the level 1 ability to happen at the target and not yourself. It'd create a neat small splash damage that would make the Pyromancer stand out as being better than other caster at using these spells. 👍
Thanks both! Great breakdown. I've recently reflavoured this into a "Stormcaller" (swapped for for lightning) and added an expanded spell list to keep it as viable as the Tasha's subclasses. My player loves it!
Having played the pyromancy from Dark Souls 3 I do have a general idea on a character sheet set up that would not only allow you to do pretty good fire damage but also physical damage if you had a weapon that complemented the fire element as well!
Oh just had a really fun idea. At 6th level, or maybe 14th, if an enemy hits them with a source of elemental damage they can convert that damage into fire as a reaction. You can do this an amount of times equal to the proficiency bonus. This could be a unique way of countering a spell without completely eliminating it but allows you the weather it.
they did the same thing in Amonkhet for the Cleric with the domains of Ambition, Solidarity, Strength, and Zeal. Amonkhet was released after Kaladesh and is an Egyptian-themed world that suffers from a curse of undeath with the last city of Naktamun being the only bastion for the living. I could go on, but I know not a lot of people are interested in MtG lore when applied to D&D. Edit: As for the RP bit, the plane of Kaladesh is a plane of artifice, where they harness a natural magical resource called Aether (yes, spelled like this, not like that weird hybrid AE thing you sometimes see) and they tend to prosecute Sorcerers for their uncommon natural magic, and fire magic is largely banned, so Pyromancers are basically the most hated form of natural mage on the plane. As in they are sentenced to death, since fire magic and the airborne Aether have a negative reaction to each other (see big boom), so the roleplay is in the fact that, to the people of Kaladesh, a Pyromancer is a walking time bomb in a world that is a magical powderkeg.
Always feels weird when a spellcaster has an Ability rewarding you for being melee attacked. Obviously crazy things happen but still, the only spell you need to be casting within 10ft of enemies is Misty step
I like that though, because it gives you a built-in deterrant. It's like how pisonous animals are brightly colored. Even if it doesn't triggger all that often, it keep enemies from getting too close, or from staying there for too long.
Yeah man…. I got a pretty decent AC, Flames of phlegethos, hellish rebuke and armor of agathys so this just makes it better. Probably don’t hit me unless you can do it in a single swing
Definitely hearing a lot of "take paladin and pyrogish it up" with this one. Appropriately, Chandra, whom inspired this, wears medium/heavy looking armor.
Oh boy. What fun. Actually happy to see the Plane Shift booklets Wizards put out getting some love. Lol but oh wow. Concept for a build Wizard 2 Mage of Prismari Druid 4 Wildfire (duh!) Sorcerer 14 Pyromancer Elemental Adept Flames of Phlegethos (does peigontoe you into a Teifling tho)
Yeah I actually want to use the sub class, and I think this a perfect case for an additional meta magic for free. At 3rd level, give them transmute spell in addition to any meta magic selected. Furthermore, allow them to transmute any spell that does elemental damage to do fire damage without coasting sorcery points an amount of times equal to their proficiency bonus, recharging on a long rest. Maybe have at 14th or 18th level have be able to transmute any damaging spell into fire. Also: I’d like to see A feature at six level that converts extra sources of fire resistance into less damage taken equal to your charisma or proficiency bonus. Then at 18th level if you take any source of fire damage you can claim temporary hit points equal to hear proficiency bonus. To keep in continuity with the improved resistance, it actually gained vigor from fire.
By the by. Yes. Would love to see more from the PlaneShift booklets. Lol Been milling around the concept of a Beast Master Ranger or a small modify to the Drake Warden for a Dominaria Kavu Rider I've done way too much periodic research into this. Lol On a scary note. Dominariaian? Moon Druid 6, Astral Self Monk Wild shape into a Kavu, with Astral arms for added beatdown. Lmao
You know what's funny. I just started a campaign in kaladesh using the planeshift book last Monday. No one ever talks about it so I just thought the timing was funny
When I look at the spellcasting in D&D I look at it as in how soon will you be effective in battle, can it help you before initiative and I look at earlier features being more important then later ones. I was not super impressed by most you get here. At no point in the first 8 levels are you very likely to blow the doors off. There is almost nothing outside of battle to mitigate the okay amounts of damage and to use it you have to increase your risk factor. Also It suffered from the lack of spell. It was common at the time for Soccerers and it does not really help you as much as I would like. The theme is good but it is pretty much a mid-level blaster that is okay but nothing to write home about unless you like fire-grams.
Is this considered homebrew? Would a DM be able to add this to Fantasy Grounds without having to enter everything manually? I love playing pyromancer's and would love to be able to talk my DM into adding this, but he's not into homebrew (and we play on Fantasy Grounds.)
I hope this gets answered before Friday this week because I got a one shot and I am running this character at lv 20, but if Fiery soul knocks fire immunity down to resistance to fire damage, does the 6th level ability "Fire in the Veins" work in tandem with Fiery Soul to ignore the resistance to fire damage?
It just knocks it down one notch. So if it was resistant to fire, now you ignore that. If it was immune it treats as resistant. It does not go from immune to normal damage. Thanks for watching!
None of the skills have more than three lines this subclass is the worst i have ever seen nothing special and what little it has is horrible i have to be 10 feet away to do the extra damage at lvl 1 i don't even have 10 hp use this is suicide, the best thing about this subclass is immunity to fire damage but that at level 18 just doesn't pay off
There is one RP ability: becoming immune to fire damage means you’ll be able to swim to safety through a river of lava.
Meh, letting physics come into the way of a good story… we’re talking 5e here, not 3.5 🤪
On that note, get an artificer to make you a surfboard that doesn't melt and you can surf in lava
Lava is to dense to sink through though. You'd sit on top of it.
Actually lava is too dense. People don't sink in it. You'd just walk on it or be able to burrow in it.
I love how this subclass was just
DND Spellcasters: Fireball best spell!
WotC: I see, what if we made a subclass about fireball

I like the simplicity of this subclass
I feel like you could add all these abilities to the Phoenix Sorcerer UA and it'd still be just _good_
Good video, really hope you do more Plane Shift content like; Aven, Zeal Domain, Innistrad Human, etc.
I played one where their sorcerer magic is basically tapping into indothermic reaction or warm bloodednes that mammals have.
I remember there being a UA for a similar sorcerer, but I love this one WAY more, props to whoever worked on this one
Oh just had a really fun idea.

I am so happy! Happy Hands is here!
I actually think this has good role playing potential just from the idea of the subclass. I would totally play this.

Very excited to try the new subclass

I think a better alternative to ignoring immunity would be changing fire damage to radiant :)

Wizard 2 Mage of Prismari

I have been waiting... This was my first character. My boy Charly...
Would love to see a review of the Pugilist
So at level 1 I guess a water version would deal cold damage and an earth one would give you 10' burrowing as a bonus action?
Play as a Tiefling and take the Flames of Phlegethos feat and you are good
I might play one of these..maybe.
Do Fiery Soul and an Elemental Adept stack ? To make immune>resistant>normal damage.
Now we need a cryomance sorcerer

Awesome subclass 😎
I guess you could say this is a HOT TAKE on the Pyromancer class
I’ll see myself out
So to be a pyromancer sorcerer all you need to do is inject fire into your vains.
Thank you.
Show the other mtg crossover stuff
Sounds OP!!!
Is this on dnd beyond v
where do I find the subclass? I can't find it on the pdf.
Page 9 of the PDF. It is just a little block of text in a box in the bottom right of the page. Easy to miss!
@@URGE Thanks!
This is nice... good video
👍🏻
Very short sighted to think this lacks rp value. Sounds more like a lack of imagination. But excuse me while I go roll up a bright wizard.

Would you guys give the pyromancer Evocation & Conjuration or Transmutation as bonus spells school, we have to do this cause WOTC won't...
