For that to work the area already had to be in darkness. Casting light doesn't make the other sources of light disappear. I guess it's up to the DM if that kind of Shadow would be allowed, since you don't rly make an area darker but just the rest brighter
The hound has dire wolf statistics, which means it has 37hp. So it can stay in the ground beneath your target for 8 rounds before kicking the bucket. Umbral Form is gained at 18th level, so a sorcerer with 10 con that takes average HP every level will have 74 hp, and would be able to stay in the ground for the full 10 rounds that Umbral Form lasts. This means that both the hound and the Sorcerer can basically guarantee their survival for the whole battle, since they have total cover. You will be able to *guarantee* those heightened spells, as well as your own survival. Turns out 5 damage a round is actually nothing compared to your average enemy's output.
The shadow sorc in my party uses her Hound of Ill Omen just to hang out next to the baddie so they get disadvantage on their saves which has helped some key save or suck spells (ie Banishment/Immolate) land. As you pointed out, it basically gives you an extra metamagic, and if it doesn't die, you can keep using it!
Have your Shadow Sorc carry an umbrella. Cast Prestidigitation on whatever light source to snuff it out. If the going gets real tough, drop darkness on yourself. If you're creative, then you'll always have a... dark source? Unlight source?... somewhere to teleport
After hearing the level 1 ability to stay at 1 HP, my first thought was to multiclass this with a Celestial Warlock for the light and dark dynamic and the level 14 ability on the Celestial Warlock giving you another way to cheat death. Not to mention getting radiant damage resistance.
I built a sorcerer around this who terrified enemies who came across the party. Stealth/Intimidate proficiencies were high, allowing him to either stay hidden or scare the piss out of them, constantly hopping across the board like a ill-meaning jack in the box.
I love the theme of this class, I just wish there were more darkness themed spells to go with it. Although I've never played a sorcerer myself, so maybe I'm just missing them?
As long as your DM is fine with it, you can reflavor spells to be more darkness themed. For example, with something like ice knife, you could describe it as a coalesced shadow firing at enemies and the darkness is frigid hence the cold damage. You can make stuff like fog cloud just be described differently as well. As long as stuff still functions as written, you can flavor it however. It is a bit unfortunate that there aren’t tons of innately shadow spells though. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@URGE It definitely does, and I feel a little silly for not thinking of that. Already did something similar for my necromancy wizard, making his fire spells blue and have little skull shapes visible in them like the Diablo 2 new character selection image. Thanks!
URGE TV If you're DM is okay with it, you could ask for access to a few extra illusion or necromancy spells that aren't on the Sorcerer spell list to really draw out the gloomy theme of the character. There are a lot of well-reviewed homebrews out there that provide each Sorcerer subclass with its own fitting extra spells.
So here's something I was wondering whether it would work: Mountain Dwarf Shadow Sorcerer. At 4th level take heavily armored (or whatever it's called). At 8th take crusher. Use your action to twinned spell booming blade or green flame blade and push enemies around you back 5 feet away from you.
Would make an interesting lock/sorcerer build. I already use a darkness, infernal vision combo on my lock. Adding enough sorcerer levels to get the shadow dog could theoretically make up for the lack of higher end spells.
Everything has a shadow in sunlight, so 🤷🏾♂️... You cast darkness in the day light and teleport within the 15ft radius and the enemy shouldn’t be able to find you. You can also teleport out into another shadow in the sunlight. You only have to start in dim light or darkness. Also, put the hound in an object like a wall and it only takes 5 force damage a round, as long as the enemy is close to the object. You can also put the hound in your darkness spell.
I can see this subclass being popular with the Edge-lords of the world, but what are some great races to pair with the Shadow Sorcerer? And can you think of some amazing Multi-class options? What Feats would work well with this subclass?
Awesome thing #1: Hound of Ill Omen + Hold Person (or even Hold Monster) + Spam fucking (the now canon) Mind Sliver every turn = a stuck baddy that the party keeps landing crit damage on (since Hold Person = Paralyzed, and Paralyzed = no movement, no actions, advantage on attacks against, and damage is treated as a critical hit). Awesome thing #2: (you can do this with any Sorcerer but this subclass flavor makes it cooler) Take Magic Initiate. Set up Hex (bonus action) and then Eldritch Blast. Next Turn: Scorching Ray (Quickened Spell it) and then Eldritch Blast the creature you Hexed.
I'd be attacking with the wolf, trying to knock it prone Pack Tactics. The wolf has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the wolf's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Good at low levels for sure. 13 STR save gets less effective over time. Also, remember ranged attacks against prone targets have disadvantage, so make sure you and your allies can get in close to take advantageous the probe condition. Thanks for watching!
Full Sunlight produces the best shadows there are no shadows in darkness. Imagine moving through the shadows in a forest on an Autumn day where the Sun is low on the horizon all day...lots of long shadows everywhere.
I think shadow sorcerer, I think becoming a master of summoning shadows and shades. Getting expertise with intimidation. Something like the comic solo leveling warrior.
This was in exciting for me until 14. The concept of casting darkness and then blinking damn near A MAPS DISTANCE AWAY is insane to me and I love it. Think of playing hide and seek with this sorcerer lmfao
@@URGE Nice! I'm trying to figure out how to RP a paladin 2/Shadow sorc 9 for an upcoming game...not trying to be all edgy and everything. Keep up the good work!
@@Otaconsps Keep in mind that Sorcs are basically genetic mages, so you can just be born into the power, and not need to be a My Chemical Romance fanboy.

Those are just the facts
Shadow dogo is best murder pupper, making this subclass the best.

A fun trick with shadow walk is to cast light on a stone, then drop it behind things to cast a beam of shadow; works best in dim light.
fuck thats so smart

And if the baddies do attack it to take it out, it saves your team from some damage.
The great part is it doesn't matter how many you summon . You can bring on as many as many hounds of ill omen as you have sorc points
If your party uses light sources, then shadow walk becomes flanking gold
Have your Shadow Sorc carry an umbrella. Cast Prestidigitation on whatever light source to snuff it out. If the going gets real tough, drop darkness on yourself. If you're creative, then you'll always have a... dark source? Unlight source?... somewhere to teleport
Being new to DnD, what you guys do makes it way easier to know what subclasses I want to start or dip into. Keep doin what you’re doin!
On 120 feet darkvision, Drow elf, Duregar Dwarf and deep gnome all have it, the first 2 also have sunlight sensitivity.
That is true. Some DMs aren’t big on players using underdark races though. Thanks for watching!
Proof that deep gnomes have the best eyesight.

The hound is one of the best way to impose didadvantage on saves against your spells. Hold person becomes nasty

I made a Sea Elf Shadow magic Sorcerer that was practically a "Navy Seal" with a Trident and a hand crossbow. He's lvl 12 now

I was going to try to make a displacer beast character that was way of the astral self monk, but now I'm considering shadow sorcerer instead
