I know the Hexblade was like, a thing in previous editions, but I can’t help but think that Hexchain and Hextome warlock options would be pretty darn fun.
I love playing a gish, and this is BY FAR the best gish in 5e so far. I both love and hate this subclass; I love it because it's an awesome gish, but I hate it because there's no reason to try and make any other class/subclass into a gish. I want to play a melee sorcererer, a wizard gish, or a druid gish, but the mechanics of the Hexblade are so strong that it makes other gish builds feel incredibly weak by comparison. Hexblades actually make really good e-blasters too, if you wanted to go Chain 'lock or Tome 'lock for a different playstyle. Just getting medium armour and shield proficiency is amazing as a caster for survivability. This is one of the best ways to get the "battle wizard" imagery, with armour, a shield and a magic book as your primary battle gear (as a Tome 'lock). I’ve made a Hexbow warlock. Grabbed sharpshooter and used the two slots for smites. Basically fired missiles at enemies. With some levels in shadow sorcerer you can see in the dark and can quicken Eldritch Blasts for more damage.
A couple of my favorite parts of Hexblade + Pact of the Blade is being allowed to use charisma for attack and damage rolls so you don't have to invest as much in dexterity beyond maybe 16. The other favorite, which I realize isn't Hexblade exclusive, is being able to smite on ranged attacks.
Nathan roll Fun Fact: A Hexblade Bladelock 12/Oathbreaker 8 multiclass can, with feats, a Haste buff, and a couple rounds of set up (possibly out of combat), NOVA for 33d8 + 14d6 + 128, an average of 326 damage in a single turn. An Ancient White Dragon has 333HP. This assumes all attacks hit along with a single crit to activate the GWM bonus action attack. With this build you also have very high magical non-NOVA damage, viable magical ranged damage, healing, minimum 19 AC with plate, high health, minimum +4 in saving throws, decent utility, and great RP skills. You can also achieve all this with just about any race, as this is a SAD CHA build. It’s definitely my favorite build I’ve come up with so far because literally the only thing you need to pull off that NOVA is a Potion of Haste. Any other magic items are just gravy for this build.

I’ve always had a hang up with the Hexblade. For a while I felt it just didn’t provide the kind of backstory and roleplaying books that comes to the other patrons so much easier. But this video has inspired me to try and make one I love!
Hexblade warlock 7 / Vengeance Paladin 13 means you can hexblade’s curse and vow of enmity for advantage allowing for a much easier crit chance, and with eldritch smite and divine smite you can load those onto your crits and really just fuck someone up. Probably the most combat focused subclass for the Warlock. Paired with the Pact of the Blade can be pretty busted if you use your abilities correctly, especially at higher levels.
Nick Can the TURTLE MAN I mean, spiritual weapon as a warlock spell is insane My damage per turn at level 5 is godly Plus the raven queen spell list in general is great
I really dig the Hexblade, but it feels like its mostly used as multiclass duct tape to make certain builds work. It also feels like you're forced into picking Pact of the Blade. Does making a spector make sense with the class? Regardless, keep up the great work guys, I love your videos.
I already said that on the conqueror paladin but this multiclass can get crazy. An other invocation that apply mainly to hexblade is relentless hex. I can't see any other warlock wanting to teleport to an ennemy. While you still can be good at range with eldritch blast, teleportation can be very usefull.
Also like the fact that with the Hex weapon, and a pact weapon, you can dual wield since both will have the Hex Warrior bonuses. Or could use Pact Weapon to have a 2h Hex weapon.
Happy to see this because I'm playing warlock as second level today since my DM scared me out of going fiend warlock in descent into a avernus because he straight-up wants my soul
The hexblade is kind of the perfect compromise for someone who wanted to play a class somewhere between Paladin and Eldritch Knight. It's got the smiting power of the pally with a focus on arcane instead of divine. And Eldritch blast.
I'm currently playing a Fire Genasi Hexblade/Vengeance Paladin. Hexblade paladins are my favorite multiclass combo. It's so strong mechanically and very interesting flavor too.
Just played with another pc who had some Hexblade in him...he could dish the damage out when he needed to! Playing as a monk, it was almost embarrassing sometimes...unless the fight dragged on, then I reigned supreme.
Love the Video guys... very interested in a Hex-blade build. Tinkering with Beyond and a Hexblade & gloomstalker with a half-elf drow (variant) build which seem to a totally doable. 5 Hex, 5 Gloom, then back to hex until 20. Loving the channel... thanks
I've always toyed with the idea of a Vengence Paladin 6/ Battlemaster 11/ PoB Hexblade 3. With the obligatory Polearm Master & Sentinel. My version is a Zariel Tifeling with the Infernal Constitution feat. Damage for days as well as a good ranged damage option. Resistance to three energy types. Not to mention a large assortment of battle maneuvers. As well as a decent amount of first level slots to burn on the Shield spell
This is the best Gish subclass we've gotten from 5E so far imo (though Eldritch Knight is still fun, just not much of a blaster). I hope the new version of Bladesinger we're getting from Tasha's is more similar to Hexblade, like using INT to attack instead of STR or DEX.
I’ll be DMing a one shot ( first time) and one of the players will be playing a hexblade... will be interesting. Once you get through the main classes, will you review the Blood Hunter. It may be the most complex class I’ve read. I’m curious about playing one, but next adventure, after my one shot, is Waterdeep... dragon heist. Likely playing a rogue and leveling up to a swashbuckling rogue...
Definitely will look into it! With the new book and all those new subclasses coming out, it might be a while, but we will get to it! Stay tuned for when it comes and Thanks for watching!
Warlock, Pact of the Blade, lol, Wizard - Bladesinger dont ask why, but the synergy is there, maybe wizard 6, and 14 warlock. not really sure, dont have anything open to look at for refrance at the moment. but just spitballing ideas
Intelligence based warlock with hexblade and bladesinger, both 10 levels for armor of hexes and song of defense is amazing, and the amount of spell slots you get is pretty even.
I did this in a campaign, was really fun, especially since my DM said I had to be near to the NPC to control him and we got captured and my character got disarmed. That’s how my party figured out that their “fighter” was a sword.
Mechanically one of the best warlock classes.....buuuuut I've always had a tough time trying to figure out a backstory with this class. Like I looked it up and it said it is a weapon that was crafted from the shadowfell and it's a sentient weapon.....but I always seem to lack creativity when it comes to making a story tied with this. Closest I have gotten (tho I'm always the dm in my group so I sadly ever play) was considering making one similar to Marvel's Venom, where I have a symbiotic bond with the weapon
If you work with your DM, it can be RP gold. What if on your father’s death bed, he tells you of a secret chest he buried next to the childhood swing you played on.... you dig it up to find a mysterious sword that binds with you as you pick it up... a mystery AND the source of your power. As a DM I love to get backstory seeds from players and turn them into plot points down the line. You don’t have to know where it came from or why it chose you. It can make for some fun reveals later on. Thanks for watching!
Honestly im a little jaded against Hexblade! It feels like Wizards of the Coast made it just so that more people would play warlock. Plus it overshadows so many subclasses that are way cooler in concept!!
I REALLY feel like the ability to use your Charisma mod on attack and damage rolls for your weapon should have just been included in the Pact Weapon feature rather than being exclusive to one subclass.
Smetimes I will go on Dndbeyond and create characters for fun. I made a Aasimir level 3 Oathbreaker Paladin/level 5 Hexblade Warlock multiclass. He was approached by one of the warlock patron deities and was convinced to betray, and break his oath with, his Paladin deity, and serve the other deity instead. It is great for combat too because you get the paladins divine smite, as well as some other smite spells and other useful paladin spells, and then also gets the Hexblades smite spells and pact of the blade invocations. With both classes being based on charisma, it creates an awesome melee fighter with casting and buffing spells too. Also eldritch blast cantrip....

What is the hex blade exactly ? I never could understand the flavor of this right class, even reading Jeremy's twitters In case you serve a sentient weapon ? Or the raven queen who made them ? Are there examples of these weapons? Are there sentient weapons that were created by others and can be patrons? I would love it if someone could answer
Great questions. From reading the Sentient Weapons section of the DMG and the Hexblade Subclass description, it says that the Hexblade makes a pact with a “mysterious entity from the Shadowfell” and that the “shadowy force behind the weapons can offer power.” The most notable example given is the Blackrazor. When looking at the DMG, it says sentient items may be “possessed, haunted by the spirit of a previous owner, or self-aware.” Based on the subclass description, I would say that the weapons are more along the lines of “possessed” and that they are essentially conduits of the patrons power for the warlock, but it is left a bit vague to maybe give the players more options to customize how the actual patronage works. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
@@URGE Thanks for answering, just one last doubt, so although the origin of these weapons refer to the shadowfell and the raven queen, I could create a weapon blessed with a divine flavor ? In fact the Hex Flavor is a little confusing, but again thanks for the answers, they helped a lot !
I would say it is allowable given that there are other sentient weapons that are more aligned in that direction. I immediately think of the Moonblade which serves to elevate the Elven (and halfelven) race and ideals like courage, beauty and loyalty. There’s also Wave which wants to further worship to the god of the sea, and Whelm which seeks to protect all dwarves from harm doing anything it can and is adamant on slaying giants/goblinoids.

The multiclass opportunities with this class are beautiful
Love hexblades. Played one till level 16. One of my favorite PC's ever
One thing you guys overlooked is that all the warlock invocations for curses also work for the hexblades curse. That can be very useful.

This has a melee sorcerer class that allows you to use charisma for AC instead of dex
Yes this combo is one of if not the most single attribute dependant ones you can get. I would be tempted to dip some pally for charisma to saves too.

Probably the most combat focused subclass for the Warlock. Paired with the Pact of the Blade can be pretty busted if you use your abilities correctly, especially at higher levels.
Also known as the only Warlock most people will ever play.
Raven queen warlock is my favorite
@@nat20sexy78 the only warlock you should ever play is the circle the moon druid warlock. 😂
I dunno genie is lookin pretty good
Nick Can the TURTLE MAN I mean, spiritual weapon as a warlock spell is insane My damage per turn at level 5 is godly Plus the raven queen spell list in general is great
@神影Kamikage that is until taco.
I really dig the Hexblade, but it feels like its mostly used as multiclass duct tape to make certain builds work. It also feels like you're forced into picking Pact of the Blade. Does making a spector make sense with the class? Regardless, keep up the great work guys, I love your videos.
Looking forward to playing hexblade and buying Tashas cauldron!
I already said that on the conqueror paladin but this multiclass can get crazy. An other invocation that apply mainly to hexblade is relentless hex. I can't see any other warlock wanting to teleport to an ennemy. While you still can be good at range with eldritch blast, teleportation can be very usefull.
I this is one of my favorite subclasses in any D&D class to play
Love you series keep up the good work as always and stay safe
Love this channel
Love the video! Keep up the good work
Love the Hexblade Warlock!
Literally my favorite class and subclass. So good for thematics if you have a great dm
Love this sub class series
Love your video guys keep it up
I'm starting in a new campain today & am running a hexblade themed around prince Nuala from the hellboy 2 movie.
Gotta love these videos
Damn Tasha's is gonna fun for you guys
This is the best Gish subclass we've gotten from 5E so far imo (though Eldritch Knight is still fun, just not much of a blaster). I hope the new version of Bladesinger we're getting from Tasha's is more similar to Hexblade, like using INT to attack instead of STR or DEX.
Cant wait to try 5e and make up a heavy hitting warlock
I’ll be DMing a one shot ( first time) and one of the players will be playing a hexblade... will be interesting. Once you get through the main classes, will you review the Blood Hunter. It may be the most complex class I’ve read. I’m curious about playing one, but next adventure, after my one shot, is Waterdeep... dragon heist. Likely playing a rogue and leveling up to a swashbuckling rogue...
Definitely will look into it! With the new book and all those new subclasses coming out, it might be a while, but we will get to it! Stay tuned for when it comes and Thanks for watching!
Love the content keep it up!!!
I'm playing a shadow sorcerer/hex blade multi-class. It's the best of both worlds!
Hey love the vids keep it up this is also my fav class and subclass
Love the Hexadin as a multi class
Warlock, Pact of the Blade, lol, Wizard - Bladesinger dont ask why, but the synergy is there, maybe wizard 6, and 14 warlock. not really sure, dont have anything open to look at for refrance at the moment. but just spitballing ideas
We may look into doing different featured multi class builds eventually and that could be a fun option to try to build out :) thanks for watching!
Intelligence based warlock with hexblade and bladesinger, both 10 levels for armor of hexes and song of defense is amazing, and the amount of spell slots you get is pretty even.
I'm wanting to finally play a magic user for an upcoming Curse of Strahd campaign. Deciding between bard or warlock for it.
Why not both a Bardlock would be pretty fun?
@@mrspriggs3256 do you have a suggestion on how to build a deadlock? Like which levels go where?
Armor of agathys or one of the investiture spells is a must for close combat
My brother fist character was a Hexblade warlock and was really fun
Hmm love the detail
A bit Late, but thanks for this Informing Video. Really good for a new player like myself.
Hexblade warlock where the character is an NPC who's been possessed by the blade?
So...Nightmare from Soul Calibur
I did this in a campaign, was really fun, especially since my DM said I had to be near to the NPC to control him and we got captured and my character got disarmed. That’s how my party figured out that their “fighter” was a sword.
Hell yeah that just screames multiclass with Kensei monk
"Charisma is the only stat that matters" -Every Hexblade ever
Like hexblade
I REALLY feel like the ability to use your Charisma mod on attack and damage rolls for your weapon should have just been included in the Pact Weapon feature rather than being exclusive to one subclass.
Same here
Smetimes I will go on Dndbeyond and create characters for fun.
Definitely a fun build :) thanks for watching!
Fun Fact: A Hexblade Bladelock 12/Oathbreaker 8 multiclass can, with feats, a Haste buff, and a couple rounds of set up (possibly out of combat), NOVA for 33d8 + 14d6 + 128, an average of 326 damage in a single turn.
I wonder if this is one of those classes that works best if you multiclass it with something like a swashbuckler rouge or fighter.
Definitely good options. A lot of people go with Paladin because of the shared charisma and more smite action. Thanks for watching!
@@URGE currently theorycrafting a Goliath swashbuckler/ hexblade using standard array. That way your lowest score is 10 with strength and intelligence, plus damage reduction.
This makes for a fun multiclass into paladin. I have a character i hope i can use once! Maybe one day 1 of my players will want to dm instead xD
I occasionally get my players to run one shots but that’s about it for me. Thanks for watching!
@@URGE that's a good idea actually

Saw someone talking about a Hexblade Archer once, but I didn't see the point of it just based on the spells I see. Never played a Warlock at all though myself, so I can't really say. Does look like the only Warlock that I'd like though lol
This is the warlock subclass that broke the paladin multiclassing right?
Pretty much. We make a quick mention of that towards the end of the video. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for dnd info
Hexblade curse is pretty cool
A hexblade warlock using a long bow... I will play this someday xD
oh boy can’t wait for taco!
Hexblade paladin for reusable smites every short rest

Hexblade time wooooo
I know it's already too late but I think you should make a video explaining your rating mechanism and relate to it in all future videos 🙈
Keep it up dudes.... If get the books will they will be used for the DnD after school gaming for Early College High School program at Brookhaven Community College in Dallas Texas. Have two kiddos that are in the school and we play at home and school. Blessings to all and yours.
I've surprisingly never played one or played with one in a party. I hear the most about hexblade warlocks but I've never played with one.
I really want to do a hexblade, but to have the rp side of things. Like the combat yeah, of course, but the intelligent weapon, that could be fun.
So Hexblade Warlock/ Oathbreaker Paladin for the most metal character of all time.
Your hexblade weapon could be a bass axe that you play metal music from with your 5 levels of College of Whispers bard.

*Tiefling Hexblade Warlock ftw*
Hexblade is a class
It really is an interesting subclass but it outshines the other warlock subclasses so much that it’s hard to justify playing some of the others
