    A bit of class lore here. This first showed up in 2nd edition in a book about elves and showed up with Bladesinger. It was the other option for a fighter wizard from that book. You got extra abilities from it, and essentially served as an arcane commander, but you didn’t have many weapon proficiencies yourself (despite having fighter levels)

    Y'all pointed it out, but it's an excellent class to dip into as an Eldritch Knight, but also worth mentioning, Paladins and melee (such as War domain) clerics. Makes them far more tanky than you initially realize.

    “This class doesn’t give you anything outside of combat.” What the WAR MAGIC subclass only gives COMBAT abilities? I am shooketh. 😉
    Joking aside, this makes a hilarious but mechanically effective 2-level splash into your tanky barbarian build. You can use the Arcane Deflection while raging, and get that bonus to your initiative too. I’d want to play a medium armour/shield wearing Ancestral Guardian barb with 2 levels of War Magic wizard, and pick spells that are more RP/exploration based like ritual spells.
    You can afford to take a 10 in your DEX with the armour and shield, and use your INT for initiative instead. I'd go with 15STR, 10DEX, 13CON, 14INT, 12WIS, 8CHA plus racial bonuses. With the new rules in Tasha's (which got a preview in the new Adventurer's League Player Guide for season 10), it's actually easy to start at level 1 with 16STR *and* 16INT for this build.

    On demand bonus to AC or saving throws? Nice. Initiative bonus? Nice. Power Surge sounds like a cool mechanic but I wish if it did more. I think adding your Int modifier to the existing damage would have been perfect but I can see it being op in some campaign settings. Nevertheless, I think this subclass has a lot of potential for interesting builds. Love the video, keep up the good work.

  • @cockman8437

    9:34 I would like to clear something up, you actually can still use spells like call lightning or flame sphere even if you have the arcane deflection active, granted you casted these spells before this feature activates.
    If you look at the Errata for Xtge, it says nothing about not being able to use spells like flaming sphere or spells that have lingering affects. I know Mike Mearls saying you cant would make most people believe you cant if rules as intended, but the Errata is a group decision and I think they ultimately decided for you to be able to use these types of spells to avoid the subclass having bad synergy with itself.

  • @WolfsSOL
    @WolfsSOL 3 года назад +3

    I've been thinking of using this subclass and a mercenary veteran to play a carefree merc wizard making his way about the world, the kind that had to learn from a wizard in Mercenary band and as such lacks the standard wizard education. Use that kind of background to avoid some of the more standard wizard utility spells for ones that would be considered more useful in a battle situation but maybe not damage focused.

  • @binolombardi
    @binolombardi 3 года назад

    The power surge ability gives more control and strength to the war wizard that at first glance.
    You’re very much correct to compare the damage capability of sacrificing a 3rd level slot used for a fireball to the damage potential gained by dispel/counterspelling.
    There are several important factors that need to be considered though, which makes this ability quite complicated and difficult to quantify.
    1) dispel magic can end multiple spells on a target with one casting. Taking this into account, the war wizard can make use of cantrips and rituals to cast on an object or person. After multiple spell effects are on the intended “dispel” target, the war wizard sacrifices their slot to gain a number of charges equal to the number of spells dispelled. This is limited by your intelligence modifier, and you squeeze out a little more bang for your slot if you’ve already had your first combat encounter and used your starting power surge. Your party may also contribute rituals/cantrip to build your charges. This is not worth trying to do until at least 20 Intelligence and around a base wizard level of 10. Counterspell is not as strong since the casting of counterspell already has a substantial effect on the game.
    2) while the charge is limited to one target, the bonus damage raises the minimum AND maximum damage of any given spell effect. While this is on average comparable to the empowered metamagic, this minimum/maximum becomes a bit more reliable.
    3) the damage bonus potentially given by power surge is not limited to once per round, but per turn. Similar to how a rogue can gain sneak attack more than once by attacking on another creatures turn, the war wizard can sacrifice power surges on another creatures turn to spread damage around per turn. This is increases by the fact that some ongoing spell effects may be used on multiple creatures during each of their turns, while a rogue is usually limited to one reaction. Another similarity to the empowered metamagic.
    I have a war wizard multiclassed with a 1 level dip into the order domain. I make use of the guidance and resistance cantrips to ensure that I have a no resource cost ability to concentrate nearly at all times for the durable magic feature.
    I use prestidigitation on myself to make a symbol of Mystra appear on myself for an hour, non concentration.
    I cast thaumaturgy on myself to change my eye color, or to make my voice boom when casting vocal components.
    I cast guidance on myself to thematically ask for aid from Mystra to give me power to end my foes.
    I ritually cast comprehend languages on myself to thematically prepare to understand the guidance im seeking from mystra in the form of power.
    I lastly cast bladeward on myself, which is non concentration, and specifically lasts until the end of your next turn.
    I then immediately cast dispel magic on myself, ending all 5 spells on myself and gaining 5 power surges. This represents my offerings and dedication to the god of my characters faith, mystra. +3 to +10 force damage on targets of your choice begins looking a lot better later on when you actually gain the stats and spell slots to use the feature more effectively.

    Seems like a good class to make DIY eldritch knight, go 5 levels on fighter than a 2 level dip for better initiative, +2 to AC and a better spell list! I'm probably going to make this at some point, seems excellent. Really is a subclass that benefits other classes more than wizards, good way to get a consistent AC of 24 for a martial class.

  • @brandonolar3217
    @brandonolar3217 3 года назад +4

    I wish they had a better level 6 feature. Maybe an extra attack option like EK or blade singer, intellect to attack and damage rolls, something in that vein. Basically anything instead of the surge nonsense. I'm a 7th level warmage in a high magic campaign and that level 6 class feature is straight up pointless. I can add 3 dmg to a spell once per short rest unless I spend 3rd level spell slots to fuel it? Garbage. 10 and 14 are cool. But 6 just leaves you in an absolute power trough from 2-10 compared to other subclasses. Alternatively a 2 level dip for an eldritch knight feels reallly good.

If you concentrate on haste that's +6 AC, +6 to saves, booming blade, bonus action attack, haste attack, target gets disadvantage on saves if you hit with any of those attacks. This make it tough to chose when to use counterspell. If you use it too often for getting high damage you might not have a counterspell available for that big spell the enemy caster was waiting to use. on the other hand if you wait for the perfect opportunity to use it you wont benefit much from the added damage (even though its not that much). Its definitely an interesting subclass though might take a dip with a combat class.

      I'm using a chronurgy wizard as of now with a 1 lvl dip in draconic bloodline sorcerer an its a blast! So was thinking of a dip in fighter an wmw in this next campaign to make a pretty interesting spellsword

    I really like this class but it is a shame they made some parts of it so restricting. Power surge is my favourite part of it in concept but what it does is kinda weak if you started with a full 5 surges per long rest and you could use them to get more reactions per turn rather than do damage I think that would be a lot more interesting.

    • @URGE
      @URGE  3 года назад

      Really wondered why they didn’t just make it a number of surges per long rest equal to intelligence modifier... thanks for watching!

    That tweet didn’t answer anything. It wasn’t a “yes or no” question.
    The individual asked if the intended play was one way or the other.
    Also, if you click on the tweet to expand on the replies, you’ll see a Jeremy Crawford quote referencing the difference between the action of casting a spell and using an action given by a spell.
    This distinction is the bread and butter of using the same spells you mentioned as a sorcerer who makes use of the quicken metamagic. Quickening a sunbeam casting time a bonus action and then on the same turn using your action to reactivate that damage.

      We did look into it with Jeremy but we didn’t want to spend too much time on the details and all the ruling stuff so we decided to just go with the apparent rules as intended definition. In the end it’s always up to DM discretion for their table and is more gray area than most of these kinds of things. Still makes one of the best level dips out there regardless of the ruling. Thanks for watching as always!

      URGE TV
      I’ve been personally playing a war wizard for about a year now. My group and I have been playing under the assumption that the raw was the intent, as we had no reason to even question it during play. If the jump that was made about this interpretation of the tweet is indeed the intention, it definitely wasn’t addressed with the recent Xanathars errata. It would incredibly limit this wizard subclass to the point where it’s only benefit would be to take it as a dip.
      I’ve taken the liberty of tweeting Mr Crawford for clarification. If he happens to respond I’ll make sure to link it in a new reply.
      This ruling truly does impact this class in a substantial way, to the point that it takes away a basic spell use strategy. I hope this works out. This is reflected clearly by your rating system.

      If you do get a response, please let us know in a new comment on the video as we don’t get automatic notifications for responses in comment thread chains. I and I’m sure many others would love an official, clearly stated answer on this!

    4:50 emphasis on the "war magic", of course all of your abilities would be combat oriented. Also inherently defensive in nature, at least in part

    No surprise that a subclass called 'War Magic' would be heavily combat based. XD

    You should be able to maintain concentration after Arcane Deflection because you're no longer "casting".
    On another note about RAI vs RAW, would you allow an Arcana Cleric multiclassed with War Magic Wizard, Spellbreaker feature to feed into Power Surge? Typically it is fed through Dispel Magic or Counterspell, but Spellbreaker has a similar effect of breaking a spell's effect on an ally with a healing spell of equal or greater level than the spell it's ending.

    I feel like this class doesn't quite know what it wants to be. It's like WotC looked at the wizard and said, "let's make a wizard that doesn't have to sit on the backline throwing fireballs, but still can't mix it up in combat, so essentially all the extra stuff we give them doesn't actually benefit that much"

    Power surge and deflecting shroud are basically worthless with how little damage they do.

    In regard to using casted spells, can I even use Spiritual weapon? It’s not even con! Making a war war wizard cleric.
