    Any other wizard: I’m the nerdiest class in the game
    Scribe Wizard: hold my book...
    Also I think it’s funny that the biggest book-worm subclass also has the wordiest descriptions

    It seems that most people ignore it, but in dungeons crawls learning spells from scrolls quickly is really good. You have this nice list of things that you can learn and you have to wait downtime for it. I love this part of this subclass.

    I like the implied notion that this sentient spell book has its own personality...and that this “personality” does not have to match the Wizard’s.
    I personally enjoy the idea of making a bookish Wizard...and have their sentient spell book being totally obsessed with Evocation magic...like, the book just wants to blow sh*t up, all the time.
    Every time the Wizard adds a spell that is NOT an Evocation spell...the sentient book becomes annoyed.
    “Bleh...TRANSMUTATION? Are you kidding me? When are we going to cast something EXCITING?!”

    I’m surprised there was less love for the 2 minutes instead of 2 hours per spell level. Instead of wasting an entire day and then some you can literally copy a ninth level spell into your book at less than 1/6th the time to write a level 1 spell for all other wizards.
    Last Wizard I played took forever to copy a sixth level spell into his book since the DM wasn’t a big fan and of down time.

      One reason we didn’t dwell on it too much is basically what you brought up. It can be incredibly dependent on the DM and playgroup. Thanks for watching!

      It does fail at living up to its title though. Many abilities they have counteract the theme of a scribe. I would’ve been happier had they titled it Order of the Awakened Spellbook as that is much more accurate to what it is.

    At first I felt like this subclass would only be good for a npc. But the more you guys discussed it the more I realized that this fits an experienced player that is really big into role play.
    Not that you couldn’t do damage, or anything else that any other wizard could, but this is very complicated and specific.

  • @thomashauguel6811
    @thomashauguel6811 2 года назад +3

    I like the fact that you did mention the Order of Scribes ability to be able to get their spell books back quickly and easily if lost or destroyed. However I don’t think that you emphasized enough how important that can be. A wizard of any other subclass that loses or has their book destroyed can only scribe spells into a new book that they have prepared and it will take an hour and cost 10 gold per spell level per spell. Any spells not prepared have to be found the old fashion way; either during the adventure or at leveling up. This is why other wizards have no choice but to have extra copies of their spell books. For a high-level wizard it can be devastating to lose a spell book.
    For an Order of Scribes wizard it’s no big deal; one short rest and you’re back in business completely.

  • @leodouskyron5671
    @leodouskyron5671 3 года назад +5

    The only weakness of this class is how often the DM will make more spell sources available. This class can copy down a spell book with a short rest 2 minutes for every level of the spell. Also the big ability is not really punishing because by that point is is very likely you will have a quarter to a half of all the spells level1-3 in your Spellbooks. More over there is luck AND you are mostly likely to be in the 9-12 range of spells. You likely will only have to do this once a day at the very most so you will have no problems kicking out spells you are not using to play for it regularly.

    This subclass is a wealth of RP and powerful damage dealing capability. I have made a 5th level one to play in my 13 year old's first game he is DMing for me. I took V.human, magic initiate cleric to get sacred flame and allow me to cast... a radiant fire ball! Tashas allows cantrip formulas to be written into spell books, placing radiant damage into the list of damage types available to swap for, lightning lure with radiance? I have to find a spell with psychic damage now. So much fun to have.

    Great video break down. Congratulations on making it through all the subclasses, can’t wait to see what direction you guys go in next.
    I have a feature point I’d like to identify though.
    The awakened spellbook feature has a bullet that changes damage type for a spell. It’s explanation doesn’t limit the change of damage type to spells that actually deal damage.
    An example of a feature that restricts damage type change in spells to those that specifically deal damage would be the new Transmute spell metamagic option in tashas.
    As written, the awakened spellbook would be able to potentially change damage type for damage, resistance, immunity, and vulnerability. As long as the spell is a wizard spell, is in that spellbook, the spellbook is being held, and a slot is expended.
    This would probably boost your combat rating a bit.

    Seems cool to have themed subclasses for Wizard, just like the other classes

  • @guilhermesilva8870
    @guilhermesilva8870 2 года назад +1

    The ability to change damage type is not only the damage delt by the spell, but the damage type described by the spell. So, you can change Absorve Elements to gain resistance to Piercing damage, if you have Ice Knife in your spellbook. That is what changes things.

    • @guilhermesilva8870
      @guilhermesilva8870 2 года назад +1

      Also, spells like Chromatic Orb or Dragon's Breath have more than 1 kind of damage type described, and any of those can be used to change another spell's damage type. 5 spells in 1.

  • @prophetisaiah08
    @prophetisaiah08 3 года назад +1

    Just to clarify, the ability to change damage types doesn't check the level of the spell you're casting; it checks the level of spell slot you're using. It's something to be aware of when you're upcasting spells. So, if you cast Burning Hands as a 1st level spell, you can change it's damage type to force if Magic Missile is in your spellbook. But if you cast Burning Hands as a 2nd level spell, you can't (because there's no 2nd level wizard spells that could be in your spellbook that deal force damage). So if you want to cast that 4th level Necroball (necrotic Fireball), having Vampiric Touch in your spellbook won't count; you need Blight.
    Personally, I can't wait to cast radiant Magic Missiles at 8th level. 😎

  • @Koshea69
    @Koshea69 2 года назад +2

    108 levels worth of spells you never plan to cast covers an 18 every day for 6 days, takes 5400 gold and under 4 hours to scribe. The capstone doesn't kick in till level 14 so as long as you have a DM that will give you access to other wizards to trade spells, or defeated wizards spellbook or a library that includes spells you should be able to achieve this by 14th level. If your in a very dungeon crawly adventure and most of your new spells come from leveling up, might want to work with the DM on something like overnight research helping you get access to more spells still paying the cost.

  • @LotusBoi1989
    @LotusBoi1989 2 года назад

    fun fact. you only need 108 levels worth of spells in order to roll all 6's on that level 14 ability (i can never remember the name) in order to be able to use it every single long rest. that's 5,400 gold and 3.6 hours worth of transcribing spells. sounds like a lot, but if you're starting at lower level you've got up to 14 levels to prepare

  • @DarrylCross
    @DarrylCross 3 года назад

    The One With the Word does sound rather costly at at a cursory reading. By the time the ability becomes available at level 14 (Assuming 1: The DM never gave you any new spells outside of level ups and 2: You pick your new spells at level ups at the highest tier available to you at the time) you will have 116 levels worth of spells. Also at level 14, with your int maxed at 20 (which is very doable by then with 3 ability increases) that would give you 19 spells you can prepare from a pool of 32 (again assuming the DM never gave you anything). So there are always 13 that will be off your prepared list (though granted, some of those might be saved as non-prepared rituals).
    If it comes down to temporarily not being able to cast some of those spells, or straight up dying (or being taken out at the very least) then the choice is a rather easy one to make.
    So yes, rolling an 18 for spells lost, on a 6 day timeframe is rather brutal, the costs are acceptable in the circumstances you'd want to use it.
    The other thing that one ought to be careful about when using that ability though is that if they remove a certain spell for those days, it is gone from their book (albeit temporarily) so that will affect their Awakened Spellbook's ability to transform the damage type of a spell. Something to be aware of before you remove spells that you never prepare, but do offer multiple damage type options.
    For example - Spirit Shroud at 3rd gives access to Necrotic, Ice, and Radiant damage types. (3 great options to change a fireball into depending on the situation!) While it might not fit your play style to actually prepare and cast it, that might be one that takes up space in your book for the sole reason it gives you access to damage type options. It would be a mistake to carelessly treat it as a burner.

      I am not a big fan of abilities that just make the character better at the core mechanics. Like a rogueclass that doubled proficiency and tripled expertise, like a fighter with an additional Action surge, or other things like that. Having a wizard who is crazy good at gaining spells, recovering his spellbook, and casting free spells is a bit lame.

    An oversight: You can copy spells into your spellbook at 2 minutes per spell level, a specialty wizard can only reduce the time it takes per spell level by half if it’s the specific school that you specialized in. This means: it takes a specialty wizard 1 hour per spell level to copy a scroll into their spellbook if it is of their specialty; it takes the Order of scribes 2 minutes per spell level to copy *any* spell into their spellbook.
    Order of scribes can copy scrolls 30 times faster than a specialty wizard, which I don’t really like.
