I can't believe you guys have already gone through almost all the subclasses already, I remember when we were still in the PHB Cleric saga. *sob* they grow up so fast
I plan on playing a Necromancer character and getting him up to at least one epic boon (the Immortality one) before he becomes the patron for my next character: an Undying Warlock. I'm excited for the new magic items and spells and subclasses and, well, everything.
I did a homebrew fix on the subclass a while back Level 1: The Spare the Dying Cantrip has range & undead make the save with advantage after being hit rather than just ending the effect. Level 6: Your saving throw heal & stabalizing heal is unique per creature & comes back after a long reast. If you stabalize an ally they heal for the normal amount. Even after that if you fall then succeed a saving throw you heal the normal amount. So on so forth. Level 10: Rather than holding your breath indefinitely you simply do not need to breathe. The rest prety much stays the same. Level 14: If you're below half health you can use a bonus action to heal for 1D8 plus your Constitution modifier (similar to Champion Fighter's healing but in a random ammount & uses a part of your action economy). If you hold a missing limb or organ to your body for a minute it reattaches &/or becomes functional if damaged (I.E. an eyeball that was removed vs your eye being stabbed).
Tbh I made an Undying Warlock by reflavoring the shifter subrace to have more a "human experiment" feel to it. Have him have been sickly as a kid and been saved by experiments by grandfather (a lich). Also, shifter pair well with a melee warlock, which I think works fairly well with the undying warlock. This class is so good for a horror-themed campaign.
As someone who is currently playing a Warlock it's very frustrating looking at those tasty sub-class spells and deciding between them and the basic warlock spell list. I guess it's because of the short rest reset on spell slots, but I don't know. There are plenty of other classes, as you mentioned, that just give them to you for free. No system is perfect or what we would like it to be, but having fun playing the game is all that matters.
Indestructible life is essentially second wind. It’s hit dice + class level worth of healing. Second wind is a 2nd level fighter feature, but it’s also a short rest feature, which is great when layered on top of warlock, I just don’t think it’s worth being a 14th level feature. Funnily enough, I think this was the best blade pact warlock (maybe in contention with fiend) until hexblade came out.
@@wizzz1967cm Doesn’t mean I like hexblade, I actually think hexblade was the start of subclass creation where mechanics take precedence over narrative cohesion, which I don’t appreciate.
Yeah 100% and it's really strong I made one with the feat medium armor master and I got my armor class to a 20AC so yeah they're a pain and they made a really good to wear you don't want to play any other subclass I do is just to try something different
Undying is probably my favorite Lock subclass, purely based on the flavor. I’d love if it doubled down on the pseudo undead nature and focused hard on a detachable limb theme, moving the limb ability way earlier in progression. Any severed limbs could act independently of the warlock and have some kinda jacked crawling hand statblock. Ears and eyes could be popped off/out and scout around. The higher your level gets the more powerful they become and, eventually severed body parts gain flying speed (hover) and magic damage. At 14, hands/arms could cast spells from their location, rather than originating from the Lock. The head acts as a tether and body parts can’t go further than 30 to 60 feet from it. I’m super on board with a subclass that has an incredibly weak attachment to their limbs, constatly asking themselves the question, “Oh god. Did I leave my right hand at the tavern? Guys, we gotta go back.”
One of my favorite things in D&D is playing meatheads that can't die. This subclass could be a really funny to play as a really dumb character who rushes into battle. Maybe take a level or two in barbarian to add to that blockhead personality. Imagine a really protective and kind zombie that dives into the fray for their companions!
If they revised the Beastmaster Ranger, it makes me wonder why they didn't revise the Undying Warlock? They do have the Undead Warlock now, since it's canon, but they don't seem to the be the same thing. Undead is more focused on necrotic power and damage, while Undying looks more like it's about not dying in general and staying alive. Even if the Undying Warlock seems to be not accepted as well as other subclasses like the old Beastmaster Ranger, it probably has one of the most interesting themes out of all the subclasses. It can be fixed.
First one here to comment play the undying warlock myself it was fun my DM actually turn me into a lich which was pretty cool so I can make a new character and my old character was the bbeg and I didn't mind that it was actually a good idea since my character was delving into madness but keep up the good work guys hopefully I can win the book but if I don't it was fun entry in the contest and just keep up the good work.
Even though it's disappointing, the undying can still be a decent patron in terms of utility I think. You can play as a tank support and keep you and your team alive while they make the big blows, or you can even be a damage dealer yourself and keep yourself in the battle when you get downed. Pretty interesting options in my opinion.
Love the subclassess video, especially you also doing the roleplaying opportunities with the classes keep it up :). Trying to get a dnd group going again and your videos help new players a lot i feel like. just starting to collect all the books for now so we got all options :)
I’m stoked for the kraken warlock in tashas, it seems to be the only one besides hexblade that can be effective in combat with the warlocks limited spell slots
I am pretty sure Defy Death is even worse than you’re described it. If you Spare the Dying on someone else, you gain the hit points, not the stabilized person. So the person that actually needs the heal doesn’t get them.
I’m really excited about the new classes on Tasha’s Cauldron, especially the Fey Wanderer Ranger. Too bad the Drakewarden came out a little too late. Thanks, Gents. I love your occasional sardonic comments on your reviews.
I am most excited for the extra sub classes. It would be fun to use the body part reattaching for rp like 1 of his ear falls off when ever you roll a nat 1 or even using it as a "magic trick" to freak people out, not sure if anyone has seen the show "Almost Human" with Carl Urban as a cop with a fake leg and he stabs a knife in it right in front of a bunch of kids as a joke.
I wouldn't call Indestructible Life (level 14 subclass feature) a suped up cure wounds, it's more like a second wind: class level on healing, bonus action to use, and recharges on a short rest.
I like them I just hope since they're going dragon that there will actually be a dragon knight class not subclasses or named night do you want to do me an actual class named dragon Knights
Undying warlock is a very flavorful class but it does not offer much for combat. I think this class would be great for NPSs, especially for bad NPCs such as the BBEG or one of his/her minions. If you want to play a warlock from Tasha's book, there are probably better options to choose from. Speaking of Tasha's book [happy segue noises], I really want Tasha's cauldron of everything. please GIVE IT TO MEEEE.
I see one issue with the 'Undead have trouble hitting you' thing. In a brawl with a dozen Skeletons or whatever, if half make it and half don't, now the DM needs to mark those as different. Small thing but as a DM I don't like anything that causes me to have MORE record-keeping.
@@HumanKatamari Round 1: Stop the fight while I make 12-20 individual rolls to see how the mooks are affected by this. Round 2: Half the guys failed their roll last round so that means that I only half to roll for half as many bad guys THIS round. You can see how this gets silly in a bigger fight.
Defy death says you regain hp not the one you saved but funny thing is you pass 1 save it's like getting a 20 cause your standing up right then and there also stinking cloud for that non breathing bit no need for water breathing ect ect
These guys are way off base on the power of this warlock. It is incredibly powerful , especially if the party healer is the one you are using it on. Not needing to eat, drink , sleep , or breath is incredibly powerful. You cant starve so no need for create food , or good berry . you cant suffocate so you can be underwater , sealed underground , casually strolling through poison clouds , no problem. You don't need to sleep so, spells like "dream" have no effect on you , nor are you ever vulnerable by being asleep to sneaky rogues etc. Also no need for your party to "switch watches " while resting , you got it covered . All in all it is a VERY powerful subclass.
Hi and thanks for watching! I wanted to clear up a couple things. First of all this is just our opinion and it’s fine to have different opinions. Campaign setting can make a huge difference and how much your play group worries about rations and survival, but a lot of people don’t even bother so that can be a huge factor alone on the impact of the subclass. Being able to stay watch all night can be nice especially if you don’t have elves or others that have easier long rests. The RP can be solid but again depending on campaign setting and playgroup. May have noticed I skipped the Spare the dying. The actual wording is “You can regain hit points equal to 1d8 + your Constitution modifier when you succeed on a death saving throw or when you stabilize a creature with spare the dying.” The wording here implies YOU get the healing, not the target of spare the dying. Which is different than you were saying. Also, it is only once per long rest, so can’t just be used to keep stabilizing people. If your DM lets you heal people like that then yes it is still solid even if it’s only once a day. We think RP is solid, but again it can be very depending on DM, playgroup and setting hence our rating. Just our opinions! Maybe in your group you can really get the most of it and that’s awesome! Hope that clears up our thoughts a bit more and Thanks for watching!
I like the warlock.... I think I just wish there were more non homebrew or refluffed options for less “dark” warlock options. I know that sounds maybe counterintuitive to what the warlock is but all of the other classes are primarily “good” that can easily be made to be bad.... where warlocks due to their patrons seem to be more chaotic and or evil bent at the get go. DND has always made classes that are to be heroic and good where the warlock isn’t. Am I the only one? Or am I missing something?
Yaknow with the short life spans of Tortles this should be awesome for a poor turtle that's not ready to pass. So many interesting things today do and see. Reattach limbs. Deadpool anyone?? I mean Death did take a liking to him. All and all seems fun. I'm down.
Some of these abilities seem more like they should belong to an Undead Bloodline Sorcerer, if WotC ever makes one, like Undying Nature and Indestructible Life as you inherited a bit of your parent/ancestors Undead property and it's part of your physical nature.
I just wanna play a skeleton pirate with pact of the chain so I can have a parrot familiar that talks for me, but man this sub-class doesn’t go very well without multi-classing
