This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to knit socks with a german short row heel the easy way. It's a very easy sock heel pattern perfect for beginners. It creates a very snug fit and is ideal for rather slender feet.
The basic recipe goes like this:
The heel is knit across half of your stitches (so if you cast on 50, you knit across 25)
Then you divide the heel stitches into three equal parts (if your number isn't dividable by 3, the middle sections gets more stitches. eg. 9/10/9 or 10/12/10). Place stitch markers to mark these three section.
You knit it in three parts:
1) first you knit short rows from the edges until you reach the two stitch markes.
2) then you add two rounds of plain stockinette stitch where you k2tog tbl all double stitches
3) and then you knit short rows starting from the two stitch markers towards the edges.
You can exchange the German Short row technique for any other method you like. It basically doesn't matter - the pattern remains the same.
For a roomier short row sock heel, consider repeating the first part three times (with 2 rounds of knit stitches in between) instead.

I am not knitting socks. Just German short rows on a sweater's neck. I am really left handed and knit continental style. This is the ONLY tutorial --and I've watched several--where the instructor actually shows what they are doing and explains what happens. I have watched it every time I need to be reminded about double stitches and German short rows, esp since parts of the authors of this pattern think I read their minds.!
As a Lefthänder, I love this. Finally got it - I think....Danke.
This is the BEST video. I watched 3 others before I found your tutorial. I could not figure it out at all prior to seeing your step by step instructions. You made it so much easier and completely understandable. THANK YOU!! You are terrific....
Glad it helped and you finally found something that works for you
Another good teacher, imo, is VeryPinkKnits. She keeps things a bit more elementary, and her videos are older - some are 10 years ago. I like seeing different people give explanations- eventually it sinks in.
@danbev8542 Yes, I just watched one of her videos as well. Thank you! I'm on a sock kick. They're just so much fun to knit!
I know that this has been up for a while, but you explained the Double Stitch so well!!! I couldn't find anything any clearer. Thank you very much!
Excellent tutorial! I always had trouble understanding the second half of the turn. That is no longer a problem for me.I liked, and subscribed immediately. You are now my go to for knitting. Thank you very much
Welcome to my channel, Janet. And very happy to hear you were able to master thistechnique!
Agreed. Norman's explanations are always spot on and the enjoyment he gets out of knitting and sharing that with skill is really cool. Thanks Norman!
Same here - I finally get it! Thank you, Norman!
Norman’s explanations are so practical and clarifying!
I can’t tell you enough how much I truly enjoyed this video. I always hated knitting socks because of the heel but this video is a GAME CHANGER. I’m so excited to make so many socks with this method. You did an amazing job. Thank you so much!
I'm so glad to hear that. I love knitting socks and am always amazed how people say they hate the heel and i'm like..why? ^^
Your tutorials always my go to! This short row heel made me enjoy the process of sock knitting. No fussing with flaps or picking up stitches. Thanks Norman!
Excellent instruction!! I wish I'd discovered German short rows on my very first pair of socks! Your video is super clear and I appreciate the repeat of the initial double stitch move!
This has been the clearest & easiest tutorial for gsr I’ve seen. I started my first sock & had so much trouble with the standard heal flap that I ripped it out. The slipped stitches made the tension far too tight.
I was going to do an afterthought heel, but this looks easier than I thought. Plus, there’s no bulk or seam.
Danke schoen for this tutorial. Have a great day.
Oh wow.. Blush...it is relatively easy. Though, you can get little holes just as easy so make sure to read the blog post that goes along with it 😅
@@NimbleNeedles - Thank you. I’ve printed your blog tips & saved your sock & heel blog posts for later. Thanks again. Have a great day.
Norman, I love your channel, you are so calm when you explain things. You are a great teacher and a great person.
I appreciate how difficult it is to explain something so clearly in a second language.... I knitted my first ever sock this week.... but the 'afterthought heel' seems a bit untidy for me so I am having another go. I assume it will work just as well with a toe up sock.... your method really makes sense ( thanks to your mum) . I wish I could knit the way you do with the yarn in the left hand, I have tried but don't have the dexterity.... very skilled. Thank you...
Fantastic video tutorial! This was the second heel that I’ve learned to knit and it was super easy to follow! Definitely very easy to knit and looks very nice
This is the best video I have found for the german short heel. I will definitely try this. Thank you so much. Keep up the great work.
Love all your videos, often play them over and over, stopping and starting while knitting to cement the technique in my head, and muscle memory of my hands.
Thank you once again Norman. I love the way you explain and demonstrate each step.
This was so helpful in replacing worn out heels in my woolens...thx you so much for the details and close ups. Excellent!
Thank you for your very clear and well demonstrated German Short Row heel. I was able to follow along and the heel turned out as it should.
Very helpful! Thanks. The printed instructions in my pattern just didn't make sense but watching you and hearing your detailed play by play was just what I needed. Thanks again.
This video help me very much to knit my socks an understand how to do the heel thank you so much ❤
This is such a useful technique! Thank you for the tutorial. I have only done this for one pair of socks so far but it is my favorite heel technique now. Not having to knit the heel flap and pick up all those stitches is so much easier!
I tried this heel last night and I am amazed. It was the easiest heel I’ve ever see or done and it looks so neat. Thank you Norman! ❤️
I have never seen a german short row method. I really like this. Thank you! Your videos are so clear and easy to follow. I have been recommending your channel to all my knitting friends.
Hello Norman, just want to let you know how much your tutorials have helped. I started knitting about 30 years ago and had to lay it down due to family raising and long work hours for 27 years. I recently picked my knitting back up and started with some socks. I’m basically self-taught, and anytime I have pattern instructions I’m not sure about or don’t understand, your channel is the first go-to for me. You explain your instructions clearly and in-depth and your video is set so its very easy to see what you are demonstrating. Please keep up what you are doing. You’re the best!
I definitely shall carry on. Thank you for your kind words ❤️
Thank you once more. Your lessons are always super clear!!!! Love from Lisbon! And thank you for charing the detail about your grandmother ... you were lucky ... and her teachings reach all the world through you! Thats very cool!!!!😊
I like that you use bright colors and a different color for the heel . So much easier to see. Thank you
Thank you for your really clear instructions. This is the best heel pattern I've come across. 😀
This is a great way to knit the German short row. Thank you so much
Thank you, this is the best heel method I have seen and clearly explained without confusing charts etc.
Love your clear concise demonstration. Thank you!
Socks are on my knitting bucket list for this year. I learned the german short row from your other video earlier this year and used it on a sweater neckline that I couldn't understand the pattern instructions. Heels always seemed so complicated but this looks very clean and simple. Thanks for another great video. You are taking up a lot of the space on my knitting instructions playlist. :)
What great instructions & so easy to understand. I think I'll watch a few more times & begin this type of heel. Thank you so much!!!
Incredibly clear instructions. This video is lovely.
Perfect tutorial! You are an excellent teacher and such an amazing person ❤️
Thank you for your effort and time!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You explain and show how to perfectly do the short rows and how to do the step 3. I really need the visual and was able to execute the heel nicely for the first time. Thank you again!
Great video, clear explanations. Love your work, Norman!
Thank you for such a clear explanation, you make it look easy!
Norman, you are an excellent teacher! I've been knitting for a long time, but I have learned so much from you.
So clear explanations... Thank you for showing us this technique! You are a good teacher.
Thank you . Very well explained and demonstrated. I particularly liked the repetition . I’ve never tried this before, I always use the heel flap method but I’m going to have a go as you have made me feel very confident.
Thank you to show and explain how difficult the way to knit german short row for the sock. I am very appreciate.
The best German short row heel tutorial! Because of you I was successful!! Much gratitude and thanks!
Thanks, Norman, for these videos. I am still wanting to learn to knit, and your beginner videos are very helpful!
Excellent tutorial. I never understood the GSR heel until now. Many thanks!
I’m working on some Pairfect socks now and knitting this heel. I appreciate this tutorial and the tips included in the written pattern. Thanks!!!
Great. Feel free to comment incase u need further help 😊❤
Thank you so much for this video. I haven't knitted socks for many years and am starting it up again. This is so much easier and I'm so glad I found your video. I purchased a book and I was so confused on the heel but you made it look better than any book. Thank you again.
Great tutorial , well explained, I just finished the heel of my first sock, I never dared knitting socks. Great teacher and great channel
Fantastic tutorial!! I’m picking up knitting again after several years for sobriety so I had forgotten how to do this method. I find it kinda funny that this heel is considered one of the easiest bc I genuinely think it’s the most efficient and attractive heel turn I’ve seen
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was so confused reading my knitting pattern instructions and trying German short rows for the first time. You have made it so much clearer!
Thank you!! I can finally knit socks thanks to your tutorial. It was so clear and easy to follow 🎉🎉
An excellent tutorial. Well explained and it's easy to see and understand what you're doing. Thank you.
OMG, I can't tell you how many tutorials I have watched, but just could not get the short heel row to look right. Until now! Thank you, Norman, for the great tutorial!! My sock heel looks wonderful. I have found my go-to for all things knitting.
Brilliant video Norman, thank you. Clear and concise.
Thanks you for taking the time to shear this wonderful project.
I love your videos. Your camera work and editing really allows us to easily see what your doing. So much better than other RUclips videos I’ve seen. I learn so much watching your channel. I’m a much better knitter now. Thank you!
I love this video. So informational and clear.
Omg! Ive been hesitant to start socks, but now i feel so much better. Thank you!❤
Thank you so much!!! I have been putting off making socks because I didn't understand the heel. Your video was very clear and easy to understand. Now I am off to start some socks 💕
Thank you so much for this clear & concise tutorial, I’ve always wanted to learn something other than heel flap & gusset. 🧦🧦
I just saw your video on GSR and I love it. I will be trying this technique. If I can do this, I will be using this technique from now on. Love all your videos I’ve seen. They are so informative. Keep up the good work.
great easy to understand instructions. I just shared to a friend who is knitting her first pair!
Clear and well filmed - thanks!!
I'm a fairly recent convert to sock knitting but am now a self-confessed sock-a-holic!! So far I've been using the heel flap and gusset technique, but for my latest sock I thought I'd try something different, just for a change. Your video tutorial (as well as the clear written instructions) is so helpful - very clear and easy to follow. The only comment I'd make (and it is a comment, not a criticism) is that as I'm not a continental knitter I struggled at first to understand exactly how to do the mds stitches - however, I got there in the end! In fact, I might try your video on how to do continental knitting. I'm quite happy doing English style knitting, but it's always good to learn something new - and you really do make it easy and enjoyable. Thank you Norman!
This is a well explained Tutorial on German Short Row. Thank you.
Wonderful! I love your presentation. Thank You
This is definitely the best boomerang heel tutorial for me as a continental knitter (working yarn on my left hand). Thanks a lot for explaining the tech in such a clear and precise manner❤️❤️!
Very happy to hear that. And I too know the feeling. A lot of tutorials/videos are for English knitters - and that can sometimes be a bit more difficult to translate!
Best video I found for this type of heel. I must say it’s not my favourite heel to make but it’s a must for some stripped patterns to make the sock look perfect.
Wow, that makes it so easy to understand. Thank you.
thank you for such clear instructions and video angles.
Norman... I am really impressed by your expertise.... God bless you
Hi Norman. Thank you for this great video. I really enjoy this German short row heel for my baby socks. With the first I discovered that although this is a simple heel in theory it is very unforgiving and if, for instance you drop a stitch it is nearly impossible to sort it out. I ended up doing my first heel 5 times. The second heel I paid close attention and deliberately slowed down and got it done in 1. I will confess that I think I did 1 too many rows in the heel, I think watching your video, yet again, you knit across the entire row when you are knitting the two last double stitches together. I have therefore ended up with a couple of little holes. I have played with the yarn and moved it along. But this was my learning for next time. Thank you once again, love this heel, love this video ❤
Excellent video with simple, clear instructions. I was able to do it on my first try! Thank you!
Thank you so much❤️👌🙏
Your tutorial makes so much easier to follow… finally I Got It🙏
There are lots of videos on German short rows. This one nails it. It is carefully planned, explained and executed to completion.
Thank you so much Norman! I love your tutorials. I have always been a crocheter and just began to knit a few weeks ago. I am following your beginner sock tutorial and I've already learned so much! I appreciate you!
Thank you so much Norman for such a nice tutorial for the heel, my big issue is I ended up with a bit of a hole at the joint, so I don’t know what I did wrong😩
I wanted to let you know just ho much I appreciate the fact that you showed more than one way to work the double stitches. Options are so abundant and helpful in knitting!
I actually am currently working on a new video on short rows with like 10 different ways to knit them (so stay tuned!)
Perfect heel for a Christmas stocking-nice even & smooth. It is so hard to find clear instructions in books with pictures or videos with clear instructions or this heel, but you do both!! Thank you so much!! I love love love your videos & they have been so helpful!! You are a really good teacher & thank you for using yarn (mostly light colored) so you can see the stitches on the video & in your instructions!! Thanks again!!
aww..thank you so much for this kidn feedback. it means a lt!
Thank you very much!Clear instructions! I save this one to make sure I can refer to it!!!😊
Thank you so much to show me how to learn German short row. You are simple the best
Wow, ok, so this made heels make sense and I really like not having to take my stitches off the needles to do it. I’m so excited to try this! You’re the bomb! 😊
My favorite tutorial when I need a reminder on short row heels! Thank you!
Thank you. Very clear instructions, and nice knitting technique.
Thank you for a lovely clear video/tutorial, I am using a new to me pattern for socks but could not understand the insructions, I have knit for many years and used short rows many times but the pattern had me flummoxed. Your video clearly explained how to complete the short rows, so simple
Oh my God. You have explained and demonstrated the German Short Row Heel better than anyone else I have watched. I hated how the yard looked on the needles by ‘pulling up’ on the yarn to create the double stitch. This is not only better looking but easier as well. Thank you! You bet I subscribed.
Love this channel. Easy to understand.
Great tutorial! You are an excellent teacher!
Wow... your explanation is excellent .
I will definitely try this
Thank you for sharing your knitting skills. I just finished turning my first ever German short row heel on a toe-up sock using this tutorial.
Awesome!!
This was so helpful! Great instructions! I just finished knitting the heel on one sock today. . . and looking forward to tackling the 2nd one tomorrow!
wow...seems like you are a fast knitter :)
Outstanding videos. Probably the best explanation of German straight rows. Thank you. I’m a new fan❣️
Welcome to my channel!
Wow, those German short rows make a beautiful heel! I’ve been knitting for 50+ years but only learned about German short rows this week in Iris Schreier’s Neon Splash Shawl knit-along. She uses German short row technique to make pattern bands that look like repeating leaves.
Oh wow! yeah..i know these kind of pattersn. Can look spectacular if you use a contrasting color!
This video has made me so happy ❤ thank you so much ❤
A big THANK YOU you have explained and shown short row sock heels beautifully, I am so so grateful to you. Stay safe and keep well. You are a treasure
Thank you! You too!
Thank you. This second part was easy and not getting gaps
I have knitted a pair of socks from the toe up using German Short Rows both on the toes and heels of the socks. Long story short it worked very well and I was happy with the results.
This is such a better tutorial than what I was using for sock heels. I kept getting little gaps I didn't like. Just finished my first heel using this tutorial. Look soooo much better. Thank you again so much, you are amazing.
Just came across this video and have to say thank you! i always end up with holes in my heels and your method of sl1kwise with yarn in front to create the DS is perfect! thank you!
I’ve always wondered how to do this, thank you Norman
I will try this way on my next sockknitting. To do the doublestich knitwise is new to me. And it's nice to know it's a method from your grandmother, meaning it's an "older" way to do the stitch. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Danke sehr! Thank you for the easy to follow tutorial! Working on my first pair of socks now 💪
I'm so glad to see another way to create a heel! This looks easy, I can't wait to try it!
it really is!
Honestly, I was scared of knitting for a long time, but your videos have shaken that fear. I enjoy watching your videos, they inspire me. Thank you for all these tutorials.
