This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to knit socks with a german short row heel the easy way. It's a very easy sock heel pattern perfect for beginners. It creates a very snug fit and is ideal for rather slender feet.
The basic recipe goes like this:
The heel is knit across half of your stitches (so if you cast on 50, you knit across 25)
Then you divide the heel stitches into three equal parts (if your number isn't dividable by 3, the middle sections gets more stitches. eg. 9/10/9 or 10/12/10). Place stitch markers to mark these three section.
You knit it in three parts:
    1) first you knit short rows from the edges until you reach the two stitch markes.
    2) then you add two rounds of plain stockinette stitch where you k2tog tbl all double stitches
    3) and then you knit short rows starting from the two stitch markers towards the edges.
You can exchange the German Short row technique for any other method you like. It basically doesn't matter - the pattern remains the same.
For a roomier short row sock heel, consider repeating the first part three times (with 2 rounds of knit stitches in between) instead.

I am not knitting socks. Just German short rows on a sweater's neck. I am really left handed and knit continental style. This is the ONLY tutorial --and I've watched several--where the instructor actually shows what they are doing and explains what happens. I have watched it every time I need to be reminded about double stitches and German short rows, esp since parts of the authors of this pattern think I read their minds.!

Another good teacher, imo, is VeryPinkKnits. She keeps things a bit more elementary, and her videos are older - some are 10 years ago. I like seeing different people give explanations- eventually it sinks in.

This has been the clearest & easiest tutorial for gsr I’ve seen. I started my first sock & had so much trouble with the standard heal flap that I ripped it out. The slipped stitches made the tension far too tight.
I was going to do an afterthought heel, but this looks easier than I thought. Plus, there’s no bulk or seam.
Danke schoen for this tutorial. Have a great day.

I appreciate how difficult it is to explain something so clearly in a second language.... I knitted my first ever sock this week.... but the 'afterthought heel' seems a bit untidy for me so I am having another go. I assume it will work just as well with a toe up sock.... your method really makes sense ( thanks to your mum) . I wish I could knit the way you do with the yarn in the left hand, I have tried but don't have the dexterity.... very skilled. Thank you...

Hello Norman, just want to let you know how much your tutorials have helped. I started knitting about 30 years ago and had to lay it down due to family raising and long work hours for 27 years. I recently picked my knitting back up and started with some socks. I’m basically self-taught, and anytime I have pattern instructions I’m not sure about or don’t understand, your channel is the first go-to for me. You explain your instructions clearly and in-depth and your video is set so its very easy to see what you are demonstrating. Please keep up what you are doing. You’re the best!

I'm a fairly recent convert to sock knitting but am now a self-confessed sock-a-holic!! So far I've been using the heel flap and gusset technique, but for my latest sock I thought I'd try something different, just for a change. Your video tutorial (as well as the clear written instructions) is so helpful - very clear and easy to follow. The only comment I'd make (and it is a comment, not a criticism) is that as I'm not a continental knitter I struggled at first to understand exactly how to do the mds stitches - however, I got there in the end! In fact, I might try your video on how to do continental knitting. I'm quite happy doing English style knitting, but it's always good to learn something new - and you really do make it easy and enjoyable. Thank you Norman!

Hi Norman. Thank you for this great video. I really enjoy this German short row heel for my baby socks. With the first I discovered that although this is a simple heel in theory it is very unforgiving and if, for instance you drop a stitch it is nearly impossible to sort it out. I ended up doing my first heel 5 times. The second heel I paid close attention and deliberately slowed down and got it done in 1. I will confess that I think I did 1 too many rows in the heel, I think watching your video, yet again, you knit across the entire row when you are knitting the two last double stitches together. I have therefore ended up with a couple of little holes. I have played with the yarn and moved it along. But this was my learning for next time. Thank you once again, love this heel, love this video ❤

I have knitted a pair of socks from the toe up using German Short Rows both on the toes and heels of the socks. Long story short it worked very well and I was happy with the results.

This is such a better tutorial than what I was using for sock heels. I kept getting little gaps I didn't like. Just finished my first heel using this tutorial. Look soooo much better. Thank you again so much, you are amazing.

I will try this way on my next sockknitting. To do the doublestich knitwise is new to me. And it's nice to know it's a method from your grandmother, meaning it's an "older" way to do the stitch. Thank you so much!

Honestly, I was scared of knitting for a long time, but your videos have shaken that fear. I enjoy watching your videos, they inspire me. Thank you for all these tutorials.
