Mock Short Row Heel // Technique Tuesday

  • This video demonstrates a sock heel that mimics the classic hourglass short row heel without the use of short rows. The same methods for modifying a short row heel for a better fit can be applied to this heel, as well. This heel can be used in cuff down socks or toe up socks.
This heel is a modification of the mock short row heel from The Sock Knitter's Workshop, by Ewa Jostes and Stephanie van der Linden. I made several modifications to the original process, which I found improved the result.

Rox, you are a treasure. You approach knitting with such a great mindset. You're both technical without being pedantic with a mix of intuitive. Just my style. You're my go-to knitting resource!

Wow. Thank you for this. I have ADHD and it’s common comorbidity - dyscalculia (dyslexia for numbers). I learned to knit at age 6. I’m a competent knitter who loves knitting, and especially handknit socks, but dyscalculia makes knitting socks nightmarish.
I have several pairs of socks on needles - all of them stumped at the heel. I know how short rows work. I can knit short rows. I understand short rows. But I screw them up every time because I get lost and confused about where I’m up to, make a mess of it, rip undone, start again, and somewhere on the 4th or 8th time (depends how much patience and perseverance I have att), to save my sanity I give up, and put the partly knit socks aside.
German Short Rows are the heel I’ve found to be manageable for me, but I don’t love them, I don’t love doing them, and I still make a mess of them. But I love knitting socks so sooner or later I am filled with hope and promise and start another pair from scratch - hence all my sock needles now have unfinished socks on them. It’s so frustrating and sad 😢
This method is fantastic. No getting confused about where that wrap is, or when to turn, or how many rows done etc. I love it. Can’t wait to try.
But as I and my daughter have high insteps I’d better pay close attention to see how to combat the too tight fitting across the instep because I don’t like that - uncomfortable. If handknit socks should be anything, it’s comfy and snug but not restrictive!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you 🙏 ❤

Thanks for sharing. This makes perfect sense. I don't know why I've never tried it before. I think this might be a good heel to do on my mindless-socks-on-the-go socks. I like patterns that I can pick up and put down and not have to think about where I am.

Finally getting to test out this heel, and knitting it with dark wool and fine needles, on an overcast evening in a room with East-facing windows wasn't all that ideal. Picking up the purl bumps on the WS turned out to be far more nerve-wracking on the first try than it should be. However, I solved the problem by marking the stitches to be picked up by a length of waste yarn through the purl bumps on each side, making sure that I had the correct number before getting started on the second half of the heel. That way, if something's not on the lifeline, it doesn't get picked up. Thought I'd share this tip in case it helps anyone.

The funny thing is, this is the first sock heel I _ever_ knit... that one time I was stuck sick in my student flat, bored out of my mind, had some yarn I had bought in a thrift shop, and decided to try knitting in the round from what I vaguely remembered from my knitting booklet (which had stayed at home). I had only sharpened wooden kitchen skewers for my needles, and made it up as I went...
... the short of it is, this is exactly the type of sock heel you invent when you're only familiar with modern machine-knit socks but also have no idea yet that short rows are a thing. :D
I have since graduated to other heels, because exactly as you say - these can get tight. But I was suuuuper proud of myself for figuring it out, so I'm still fond of this one!

I know what you mean. I just started doing socks a week or two ago. For years I was too intimidated to try them. But all the while wondering if a heel could be done this way, and it can. I did a pair of socks with the heel and gusset and they turned out good. Then I made a similar one as this (shadow wrap heel), but I don't like how they form a ridge line on the inside, so I'm going to rip that out and will try it this way next, except I'm going to slip the first st on every row, then pick up those sts (since they'll be easy to see) when I get to that part.

I just succesfully tried this out on my first sock! I find it quite a bit easier and nicer-looking than German short rows, which I tried out yesterday and frogged today. Your tutorials for both techniques are perfect though, you are an excellent teacher.
After the German short rows experience I wanted to try out a heel that did not involve double stitches, heh. And I am asking myself now why anyone would want to do that when they can just do this! But it's like you always say, there are always different ways to arrive at a given result in knitting, some fit certain people or situations better than others, and it's always worth trying them out and understanding them in order to improve one's skills. Thank you again for all the amazing content!
